Worldwide, food grain is lost due to damage by insects, mites and micro-organisms. Any additional approaches towards preventing farm-storage losses could contribute to saving more grain. In one paper of this issue, the authors assess the effect of a lectin-like protein on lepidopteran larvae causing loss in stored food.

Studies were carried out in 1983 to determine the relative abundance and species composition of three lepidopterous stem borers in upland and irrigated rice at Ibadan, southwestern Nigeria. The relationship between irrigated rice crop phenology and the population of the borers and stalk-eyed fly was also studied.

White stem borer, Maliarpha separatella was the predominant species in upland and irrigated rice, followed in upland rice by pink stem borer, Sesamia calamistis, and striped stem borer, Chilo zacconius and in irrigated rice by C. zacconius and S. calamistis. The proportion of M. separatella was higher in irrigated rice than upland. Three population peaks were observed annually in both upland and irrigated rice.

Studies on the relationship between irrigated rice phenology and field population of lepidopterous borers and a dipteran borer showed that the stalk-eyed fly, Diopsis spp., occurred before 20 days after transplanting (DAT) in ITA 212 and continued up to 90 DAT: the peak was observed at 40 DAT. The lepidopterous borers did not appear until 40 DAT and populations peaked at 80 DAT.

Gorging is stimulated in some insects by plasma components alone. In other insects engorgement is maximal only when blood cell components are present in addition to the plasma. Plasma components recognized by insects are NaCl, NaHCO3 (some anopheline mosquitoes) and albumin (Anopheles dirus and Pediculus humanus). Those requiring blood cells recognize this fraction by its adenine nucleotides which, for optimal engorgement, have to be offered in the presence of isotonic NaCl solution buffered by NaHCO3 (i.e. Rhodnius, culicine mosquitoes, Simulium, tsetse and Tabanus). The presence of albumin in the feeding medium may lower the level of nucleotides required to induce gorging (i.e. Aedes).

For most haematophagous insects requiring the cellular fraction, ATP is the most effective phagostimulant. It may however be replaced quite effectively by non-hydrolyzable analogues, indicating that ATP is not essential as a source of energy for the gustatory receptors involved in blood meal recognition.

In Zambia, termites have been recognized as pests of agricultural crops, plantation trees, structural timber, manufactured wooden goods as well as paper. This makes their control imperative. In line with the concept of pest management, appropriate control measures of termites must take into account their taxonomy, biology and ecology, as well the assessment of crop damage and yield losses. This paper discusses some of the problems inherent in developing such a scheme in Zambia and provides alternative solutions.

Five-to six-day old male pupae of Ectomyelois ceratoniae Zeller were irradiated with 0, 20, 25 and 30 krad of gamma rays. When the radiated males were mated with normal females there were deleterious effects on fertility without extreme effects on mating or fecundity. Percentage of embryonated eggs and progeny per female decreased to two thirds of the control by 25 and 30 krad treatments. Productivity of the female mated with irradiated males was decreased and significant reductions in egg viability, egg hatch and larvae per female were observed in F1 generation. Similar pattern of sterility was observed in sibling crosses of F2 at the three doses.

A 2-year study was conducted to determine the abundance of rice arthropods as affected by weeding regimes and toposequence sites, from upland to lowland, in an inland valley in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa. Toposequence site had an effect on insect populations. Most insects were found in the moist, lower portion of the slope (hydromorphic or phreatic zone) and in the valley bottom (irrigated lowland). Among these were the white leafhoppers Cofana spectra and C. unimaciilata (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), the green leafhoppers Nephotettix spp. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), and the diopsids Diopsis longicornis and D. apicalis (Diptera: Diopsidae). Stemborer damage was generally most severe in the lowland ecology. Weed dry weights and weed species composition were affected by toposequence site. Cyperns difformis L. was most abundant in the lowland and Digitarla horizontalis Willd. in the upland sites. Weeding regime had an effect on the abundance of insect pests and natural enemies (spiders and damselflies) and on the extent of stemborer damage, the effect varying with toposequence site. Implications of the results for the integrated management of weeds and insects are discussed.

The insect fauna of rain-fed rice, Oryza sativa, was assessed using the sweep net and direct count methods. The objective of the study was to provide basic information on the insect pest complex of rice in the area and their natural enemies. One hundred and five insect species belonging to nine orders and 57 families were found. The insect orders in order of abundance were Diptera (45.67%), Coleoptera (12.77%), Lepidoptera (12.23%), Orthoptera (8.44%), Heteroptera (8.23%), Homoptera (7.03%), Hymenoptera (3.25%), Dermaptera (1.95%) and Dictyoptera (0.43%). Diopsis thoracica Westwood (Diopsidae) (69.43%) was the most abundant dipteran followed by the sarcophagids (14.93%) and calliphorids (7.11%). Members of the family Chrysomelidae represented 50% of the coleopterans followed by the coccinellids (17.46%). While 31% of the lepidopterans were noctuids, 60% were pyralids. The pentatomids (50.57%) were the most abundant heteropterans while the acridids (43%) were the most prevalent orthopterans. The homopterans were mainly Cofanaunimaculata Signoret (which represented 79%). The insects were clustered into three groups with D. thoracica alone in group 1, C. unimaculata and Sarcophaga species in group 2 and the rest in group 3. We therefore conclude that D. thoracica is the most important pest of rice in Ekpoma while C. unimaculata may also be very important, but Sarcophaga species appears to be the most important natural enemy in the system.

Storage pests cause considerable damage to stored grains in Eritrea. A study on storage pest control was conducted at room temperature (25 °C) and 57% relative humidity, to evaluate the efficacy of botanicals and sodium chloride (table salt) against Zabrotes subfasciatus Boheman on field pea (Pisum sativum L.). The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design (CRD) in three replications. The treatments used were: neem (Azadirachta indica), red pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.), sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) oil, datura (Datura stramonium L.), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill), table salt (sodium chloride) and a control without pesticide. Data collected were weight loss, damage percent and germination percent of field pea grain, and also adult mortality of Z. subfasciatus. Rates of application for all the treatments were 3% w/w and an untreated control. Results of the study showed that E. globulus leaf powder caused 88.89% mortality of Z. subfasciatus and sesame oil caused 100% mortality, three days after treatment. The other treatments were less effective in causing mortality of the insect. After five months of storage, the lowest weight loss was observed in grain treated with sesame oil (1.81%) and neem (4.02%) compared with the control that had 16.68% loss. Grain weight loss was 7.45% for treatment with table salt, 8.11% for eucalyptus, 9.62% for red pepper and 15.29% for datura. Grain damage and weight loss increased as storage time increased. Moreover, these plant materials and table salt had no effect on the germination capacity of field pea. In general, the results obtained indicate that these plant materials and table salt can be used for the control of Z. subfasciatus.

Calmodulin is a ubiquitous endogenous calcium receptor in eukaryotic cells and is involved in many different physiological functions. The presence of calmodulins in protozoa has been reported for Tetrahymena and Paramecium. Calmodulin purified from T. pyriformis is composed of 147 amino acids and the amino-terminal is acetylated.Compared to bovine brain calmodulin, there are 11 substitutions and 1 deletion of amino acid residue(s). Besides such structural specificity, Tetrahymena calmodulin (T-CaM) is highly unique in that it has a potential ability to activate the pellicle-bound guanylate cyclase in a calcium-dependent manner. This stimulatory effect is also observed in Paramecium calmodulin (P-CaM). Bovine brain calmodulin represses the T-CaM-dependent activation of guanylate cyclase, indicating that bovine brain CaM exerts its inhibitory influence by interfering with the calmodulin-binding site of this enzyme. The 14S and 30S dyneins extracted from demembranated cilia with EDTA contai ATPase activities which are potentiated by addition of calmodulin. Taken together with its location in cilia, T-CaM appears to regulate the ciliary movement. Moreover, evidence has been provided that calmodulin may be implicated in the glycoprotein biosynthesis. The phosphorylated derivatives of the long chain polyisoprenoid alcohols (dolichol phosphates) are known to act as coenzymes, and the microsomal enzyme involving dolichol phosphorylation is calcium-requiring CTP-dependent and activated by calmodulin. A role for calmodulin in the control of cell growth is postulated by the concerted fluctuations of calmodulin contentand guanylate cyclase activity during the cell cycle in synchronized Tetrahymena cells. In addition, some other possible functions for calmodulin can be considered in protozoa.

Immature stages of five species of Gerridae are described and illustrated for the first time: Rheumatobates longisetosus Polhemus & Manzano, Rheumatobates probolicornis Polhemus & Manzano, Rheumatobates peculiaris Polhemus & Spangler, Telmatometra whitei Bergroth and Telmatometroides rozeboomi (Drake & Harris). The first two were distributed in the Pacific region of Colombia, R. peculiaris distributed along the Pacific region of Colombia to Ecuador, T. whitei distributed from Mexico to Colombia and Ecuador, T. rozeboomi from Central America to Colombia and Ecuador. The five species were collected in the southwest of Colombia, near the Pacific coast.

When the compound eye of the adult of the planthopper, Myndus crudus, is light-adapted, pigments are condensed in a zone proximal to the crystalline cones. Viewed externally, the eye is straw-colored. When dark-adapted, pigments migrate distally into the region of the crystalline cones and thus are closer to the cuticle. Viewed externally, the dark-adapted eye is maroon-colored. The eyes of most adult M. crudus observed during daylight hours were light-adapted. Eyes of males and females changed from the light to the dark-adapted condition between sunset and ½hr after sunset. When planthoppers with light-adapted eyes were placed abruptly into darkness at a temperature of 25–27°C, the eyes became dark-adapted within 15–30 min. When planthoppers with dark-adapted eyes were placed abruptly into light, the eyes became light-adapted within 30–60 min. At 8°C the planthoppers were immobile, and light-adapted eyes had not changed to the dark-adapted condition within 45 min. Eyes of M. crudus nymphs, which live in the root zones of grasses, are dark red and do not change color in response to changes in light. Field samples showed that adult M. crudus were active in coconut palms during the day and night, but higher numbers were caught during the day (P < 0.01).

This note reports an unusual case of a high number of oocysts found by dissecting the midgut of Anopheles dirus Peyton & Harrison from Laos, where dissections have not been carried out for many decades. In dissected samples, the number of oocysts ranged from 1 to 250 and tests carried out on the heads and thoraces of A. dirus using the ELISA method were positive for Plasmodium falciparum.

Eggs of Heliocheilus albipunctella de Joannis were picked up during ear formation of millet at Bambey in 1988 and were followed up in the laboratory at temperatures 25–30°C and 60–70% r.h. Trichogrammatoïdea sp. probably T. armigera parasitized 60.3% of them. During the period in which eggs were collected, percentage of parasitism increased, which certainly means a build-up of parasite populations.

Stemborers in Africa are attacked by a complex of about 120 species of hymenopteran parasitoids, including about 15 species which are either facultative or obligatory hyperparasitoids. Several dipteran parasitoids also attack stemborers. An overview of hymenopteran stemborer parasitoids is here presented by superfamily and family, giving numbers of genera and species involved, their biologies (where known) and distributions.

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory to screen the leaf extract of Dracaena arborea (Willd.) Link for the presence of chemical groups with insecticidal activity against Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) and Callosobruchus maculatus (Fab.). The plant materials were collected, dried, ground to fine powder and extracted with 90% ethanol. Phytochemical screening involved the use of thin layer chromatography analysis for chemical compounds such as alkaloids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinones, flavonoids and terpenes. Partitioning of the extract was carried out by dissolving the extract in water to obtain the aqueous phase, which was partitioned between equal volumes of chloroform, n-hexane, n-butanol and ethyl acetate. The different fractions were screened for insecticidal activity against S. zeamais and C. maculatus. Some fractions of the leaf extract such as ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions demonstrated 100% mortality, offered protection to grains, reduced progeny development and repelled the insects compared with the control. Based on the activity of some fractions, the leaf extract of D.arborea has the potential for development as a botanical insecticide against S. zeamais and C. maculatus.

Detailed biology of the sorghum earhead bug, Calocoris angustatus Lethierry was studied at Dharwad, India during 1979–1981. Egg incubation and nymphal developmental period ranged from 5.6–11.0 and 10.0–17.0 days, respectively. The duration of first, second, third, fourth and fifth nymphal instars was 2.2 to 3.4, 2.3 to 3.0, 2.0 to 2.8, 2.0 to 3.0 and 2.0 to 2.7 days, respectively. The males lived for 8.9 to 17.6 days and females for 12.2 to 21.3 days. Fecundity varied from 57.7 to 267.1 eggs per female. Preoviposition, oviposition and post oviposition periods varied from 1.2 to 2.1, from 7.2 to 14.0 and from 5.0 to 15.8 days, respectively. All the developmental stages of the bug are described.

The midge, Contarinia sorghicola Coquillett, is a major pest of grain sorghum in many areas of Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and America. Literature documenting the status of research on the biology, behaviour, and field and cage screening techniques is reviewed. Numerous germplasm entries have been evaluated and many resistant sources are identified from various midge screening programmes. A high degree of resistance was found in nine working groups viz., Caudatum, Durra, Caudatum/Nigricans-Zerazera, Caudatum/Kafir (Hegari), Nigricans, Caffrorum-Darso, Durra-Nigricans, Durra-Nandyal and Caudatum-Bicolor. The identified resistant sources and the midge resistant varieties released from the breeding programmes are listed. Studies on the mechanisms of resistance showed predominance of antixenosis for oviposition over adult attraction and variable degrees of antibiosis. The morphological characters and biochemical factors associated with resistance have been explored. Short and compact glumes which remain closed during anthesis conferred resistance. The tannin content in the ripening sorghum grain is related to resistance against the larva. The inheritance of resistance showed quantitative nature. The open and closed glume character expression indicated its dominance and recessiveness, respectively. Short glume character can be used as an useful genetic marker. Pedigree and modified pedigree breeding systems were suggested to transfer high level of midge resistance into agronomically acceptable types for selection and hybridization.

Insect pests and plant diseases are among the main factors limiting bean production in Tanzania. A survey of methods of pest and disease management in small-scale bean production systems was carried out in Mgeta Division.

The results revealed that small-scale farmers are well informed of the major insect pests limiting bean production. The farmers know the type of damage caused by most insect species and the time of their occurrence. Although farmers are not aware of the pathogens affecting their crops, they can distinguish damage caused by insects from those due to diseases. Farmers are also aware that diseases are associated with environmental factors which influence disease development.

Farmers use both deliberate practices and incidental practices to manage insect pests and diseases.

The most frequently used deliberate practice is avoidance. Choice of growing season and date of planting are observed closely as a means of avoiding diseases. Although beans are cultivated in both growing seasons (September–December and February–May), the first season is the best for growing beans. Rains are not very heavy, but reliable and well distributed, and the season does not end up with low temperatures and high humidity which favour development of fungal diseases. Planting commences as soon as the rains start because early planted crops suffer less from pests. Farmers do not use purchased inputs in the form of fertilizer and pesticides. Larger insects are killed mechanically.

Incidental control takes place in the form of a number of cultural practices. Intercropping with maize, potatoes, cowpeas, pigeon peas, cassava or sorghum is normal and reduces the risk of crop failure. Terracing, where crop residues and weeds are buried under soil, reduces the amount of initial inoculum of certain pathogens. Farmers use a mixture of seeds of different cultivars deliberately, some high yielding and early maturing; and some late maturing, thus ensuring the farmer of food early in the season and beans as a cash crop later. Such variety mixtures appear to provide a buffer against pests and diseases.

A breeding strategy should be developed for variety mixtures instead of pure line varieties as the productivity of pure varieties in most cases is associated with the use of purchased inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides which are beyond the reach of small-scale farmers. Variety mixtures have a greater efficiency in using environmental resources, and are less affected by pests and diseases, and thus give higher yields than pure varieties.

The biological hypothesis that female parasitoids can adjust their fecundity schedule according to host availability, and tradeoff longevity with fecundity was tested in a thelytokous oophagous parasitoid, Trichogramma brasiliensis Ashmead (Trichogrammatidae: Hymenoptera) parasitising the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). The tradeoff between early and late reproduction revealed that this wasp was able to exploit practically all available hosts during the first day or first few days of adult life. During spells of host unavailability, it was able to adjust its fecundity schedule accordingly. There was a negative relationship between survival and reproduction. Adult females survived shorter (10 days) when an unlimited supply of hosts was present, but longer (16 days) when no hosts were provided. These observations suggest the potential suitability of T. brasiliensis for inundative releases even in conditions of fluctuating host availability.
