Oviposition behaviour of the cotton bollworm, Heliothis armigera, and its relation to day-night cycle was examined under laboratory conditions. Eggs were laid both in large quantities of clumped eggs at one place, and singly distributed in the oviposition cage, always glued on the substrate. The maximum individual life time fecundity recorded was 3080, and the highest number of eggs delivered in 1 day was 949. The mean pre-oviposition period was 2.9 days. Peak fecundity occurred between days 5–9 and the highest mating frequency from days 4–6 after emergence. Maximum age for egg laying was 29 days, average life expectancy was 22 days, with longest individual survival of 32 days. Male longevity did not vary from that of females. There was a significant difference in the longevity of mated and virgin females; the mated females lived for a shorter time but produced a significantly higher number of eggs. Also, mating induced a sudden surge in oviposition. Almost 90% of the total eggs were laid in the darkness. Out of them, 60% were from the first and 30% from the second half of the dark period.

The structure of hildecarpin, an insect antifeedant 6a-hydroxypterocarpan isolated from the roots of Tephrosia hildebrandtii has been confirmed by a combination of degradation reactions, NMR and mass spectra. Hildecarpin has been dehydrated to the corresponding pterocarpene 3-hydroxy-2-methoxy-8,9-methylenedioxypterocarpene. Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of the pterocarpene has afforded the isoflavan 2′, 7-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavan, acetylation of which has led to 2′, 7-diacet6xy-6-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavan. The NMR and mass spectra of the degradation products confirm the structure previously assigned to hildecarpin.

Diapause in the pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, is a quantitative genetic character that is in turn regulated by external environmental factors. A naturally occurring non-diapause strain of the insect from south India and two diapause strains from Arizona (U.S.A.) were used in crosses to study the inheritance of diapause. The F progeny expressed a diapause response intermediate between the two parents and no clear dominance was evident for the non-diapause character. It was not possible to classify the phenotypes of backcross and F2 progeny in accordance with simple Mendelian ratios. Comparisons of reciprocal crosses indicated that the progeny from male parents of the Indian strain usually had a lesser incidence of diapause. Such sex related differences were more evident in F2 progeny and backcrosses. It is therefore concluded that diapause in the pink bollworm is inherited in a complex way and that non-diapause is not completely dominant over the diapause trait. The study also indicated that incomplete dominance for non-diapause involves a sex-linked gene.

Amblyomma hebraeum differs from many ixodid tick species in that it is not susceptible to the direct effects of the host immune response. All stages of the life cycle are able to feed repeatedly on laboratory hosts and show no progressive declines in engorged weight. However, on cattle there are declines in the yield of engorged adult females over time, as animals become sensitized to the tick and grooming increases. In the field zebu, Bos indicus and sanga, B. indicus x B. taurus breeds of cattle become less heavily infested than B. taurus breeds. The apparent resistance of zebu and sanga breeds is the result of learned tick avoidance behaviour, skin sensitivity and the ability to dislodge ticks prior to attachment as well as grooming ability. Among other Amblyomma spp., the feeding of A. americanum is adversely affected by acquired host immunity, while that of A. variegatum is generally unaffected.

ECFXPERT is a microcomputer software tool which can be used to investigate tick populations and the control of East Coast fever. The package contains four simulation models: a model for predicting the abundance and seasonality of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks; a model for predicting East Coast fever prevalence within a herd of cattle; and two models for the study of disease control using either acaricidal dipping strategies or chemotherapy. In this paper, the philosophy of the ECFXPERT package, and the underlying assumptions and mathematical techniques employed are presented, along with the results of a number of computer experiments designed to validate and illustrate potential use of the model.

In laboratory experiments, pupae of the uzi fly, Exorista sorbillans Wiedemann (Diptera: Tachinidae), an endoparasitoid of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) were subjected to UV-irradiation for different durations. Upon adult emergence, irradiated and control flies were crossed in all possible combinations and allowed to parasitise healthy silkworms. Adult emergence, fecundity and longevity of the resulting progeny were recorded. Progeny of irradiated E. sorbillans showed significantly reduced adult emergence, oviposicion period and hatchability. The reduction in fecundity was negatively correlated with the duration of exposure to UV radiation. The longevity of uzi flies of both the sexes was also significantly reduced.

The habitat preferences and activity patterns of Glossina swynnertoni Austen were studied using Siamese traps, electrified screens and vehicle patrols in Aitong, southwestern Kenya in three habitats: large thicket, wooded grassland and an Acacia community. Except in the Acacia community, G. swynnertoni occurred in association with Glossina pallidipes Austen. Apparent density varied significantly among the three habitats, being highest in the Acacia community, intermediate in wooded grassland and lowest in large thickets. Density also varied seasonally, with higher densities occurring in the rainy season than in the dry season in all three areas. Vehicle patrol was a more effective and rapid method for sampling G. swynnertoni than either Siamese traps or electrified screens. However, vehicle patrol catches were strongly biased in favour of males (4:1). Diurnal activity in the Acacia community was unimodal for both sexes, with peaks of activity occurring at 1100–1200 h for males and at 1400–1500 h for females. Both sexes remained active in the afternoon but activity declined rapidly towards dusk (1700–1800 h).

The development and pest status of Aspavia armigera on two cowpea varieties viz: Ife Brown and TVU1890 and alsoon two upland rice varieties viz: ITA 128 and ITA 257 were studied under ambient conditions in the laboratory and at the roof-top garden, Department of Agricultural Biology, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

The oviposition periods on rice were 15.1 and 6.0 days respectively on ITA 257 and ITA 128; and on cowpea 10.6 and 8.5 days respectively on Ife Brown and TVU 1890. Fecundity was low. Mated females laid the highest number of eggs (24.6) on the cowpea Ife Brown and this was significantly higher than in the other cultivars. Mated and unmated males and females lived longer on Ife Brown and ITA 257 than on ITA 128 and TVU 1890.

The developmental period (nymph to adult), was shorter on ITA 257 (23.3 days) and Ife Brown (22.9 days) than on ITA 128 (23.3 days) and TVU 1890 (25.3 days). There were five nymphal instars and the mean growth ratio of head capsule measurements was 1.32.

Infestation at the level of two A. armigera per peduncle caused total seed losses in the two cowpea varieties whereas four and eight bugs per panicle caused 39.1 and 31.7 % grain yield losses in ITA 257 and ITA 128 rice varieties respectively.

The interactions between the cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch, its parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson and hyperparasitoid Syrphophagus africanus Gahan were assessed in the laboratory. Host age preference for hyperparasitism was evaluated using parasitized aphids of different ages (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days old and mixed ages). We studied the influence of the hyperparasitoid on the parasitism efficiency of L. testaceipes, the effect of host age on some biological parameters of S. africanus, and its hyperparasitism based on aggregated or isolated mummies. The presence of S. africanus significantly affected aphid parasitism by L. testaceipes (21.2 ± 3.6 vs 36.6 ± 4.5%). Except for 1-day-old hosts, S. africanus successfully parasitized hosts of all tested ages, with preference for newly formed mummies (39.16 ± 3.31% parasitism in 5-day-old hosts). The development time of immature stages of the S. africanus progeny was significantly affected by host age. The sex ratio of the hyperparasitoid progeny was largely female biased and did not vary with host age. Syrphophagus africanus females from live parasitized aphids produced more offspring (36.55 ± 6.28 vs 25.00 ± 7.16) and lived longer (21.09 ± 1.57 vs 10.88 ± 2.31 days) than those from mummy hosts. Hyperparasitism rates were higher on aggregated mummies than on dispersed ones (36.00 ± 2.86 vs 20.66 ± 4.00%).

Several species of Chilo are serious pests of cereal crops. The important species attacking cereals are Chilo agamemnon, C. orichalcociliellus and C. partellus on maize and sorghum; C. auricilius and C. zacconius on sugar-cane, and rice; C. suppressalis on rice; and C. sacchariphagus indicus on sugar-cane. Insects are reared in the laboratory on natural and artificial diets for various purposes, namely for insecticide testing, hormone and pheromone manipulation, biological control, host-plant resistance, etc. Rearing of an insect in the laboratory requires rearing facilities, colony establishment, research and development of rearing techniques, resources, and maintenance of insect quality. All these aspects for rearing major Chilo spp. have been discussed. However, detailed information is available only for C. partellus and C. suppressalis. Techniques used for resistance screening and damage evaluation against spotted stem borer, C. partellus using naturally occurring population and artificial infestation are described.

Eight species of the genus Chilo Zincken have been reported from maize, sorghum and millet. Out of these, four species C. agamemnon Bleszynksi, C. diffusilineus de Joannis, C. orichalcociliellus (Strand) and C. partellus (Swinhoe) are known pests of these crops. Others, C. sacchariphagus (Bojer) and C. suppressalis (Walker), are serious pests of sugar-cane and rice and have been occasionally recorded attacking maize, sorghum and millet. Their distribution is discussed. About 50 species of parasitoids and predators reported from various Chilo spp. are listed. Possibilities of biological control are discussed.

Accessions of Vigna vexillata, Vigna oblongifolia, and Vigna unguiculata (subspecies unguiculata, dekindtiana, and pubescens) were evaluated under laboratory conditions to identify sources of seed and/or pod resistance to the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculates. TVnu 37 and TVnu 88 (V. oblongifolia) and TVnu 72 (V. vexillata) possessed high levels of seed resistance. On mature, dry pods, seventeen-fold differences in mean eggs laid/cm2 were observed, suggesting that ovipositional nonpreference could be a practical form of resistance to C. maculatus. In infested pods, pre-establishment larval mortality (mortality before larvae become established in seeds) varied among accessions, ranging from 19.3% in N1 778 (cv-gr. Biflora) to 91.3% in NI 816 (cv-gr. Textilis). The total percentage larval mortality in infested pods ranged from 34.6% in TN 88–63 (V. unguiculata) to 100% in TVnu 72 (V. vexillata) and NI 816 (cv-gr. Textilis) with the majority of accessions producing over 80% mortality. Higher levels and more durable forms of bruchid resistance might be achieved by combining seed and pod resistance.

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is a global insect pest that transmits many important plant viruses. A field study was conducted on infestation by B. tabaci and incidence of whitefly-transmitted viruses after the application of selected foliar and seed-treated biorational insecticides in seven vegetable and row crops in Egypt. Three foliar insecticides (Actara, Biofly and Neemix) and a treated check (Actellic) were assayed across three weeks on seedlings and mature plants, and two seed-treated insecticides (Actara and Gaucho) and a treated check (Aldicarb) were assayed on seedlings. All of the foliar insecticides led to 60–100% reductions in whitefly infestations in each crop. Biofly and Neemix were the least efficacious insecticides. Incidences of whitefly-transmitted viruses were reduced in each insecticide-treated plot with seedlings of four crops; however, no effect on virus incidence was observed in the experiment with mature plants. Crops of cucumber, eggplant, squash and tomato displayed symptoms characteristic of Cucumber vein yellowing virus, Squash leaf curl virus or Tomato yellow leaf curl virus; however, no symptoms of whitefly-transmitted viruses were observed in green bean, potato or sugar beet. The results show that several biorational insecticides may suppress whitefly populations in seedlings to delay whitefly-transmitted viruses in some vegetable crops in Egypt.

Several species of stemborers attack sorghum and pearl millet in Africa and Asia. The commonest species on sorghum are Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) and Busseola fusca (Fuller) and on pearl millet, Contesta ignefusalis (Hampson). This paper discusses control options and the extent to which farmer perceptions of stemborers and associated crop losses have been considered. Examples of research aimed at developing IPM strategies are presented in the context of their impact or lack of it, on the farming community. Research efforts have traditionally focused on the development of resistant cultivare and only recently are they being targeted towards a combination with cultural and biological tactics. Conventional breeding procedures have not produced adequate levels of resistance to stemborers and natural enemies are not effective in regulating borer populations. The prospects of applied biological control and improved intercropping configurations are discussed. Reference is also made to progress in the role of semiochemicals in parasitoid activity on Ch. partellus and sex pheromones in the control of Con. ignefusalis. Unless resistance levels to stemborers are increased through biotechnological approaches, optimisation of the yield potential in existing cultivars requires that IPM research should focus on the improvement of cultural and biological components and should incorporate farmers' perceptions and an assessment of traditional pest management practices.

Studies aimed at setting up a system of rational control of pests were carried out at the Vallée du Kou rice irrigation scheme near Bobo-Dioulasso in 1986. The first part of the study focuses on the phytosanitary survey of the above mentioned rice irrigation scheme of 1043 ha through a network of observation sites. This part has given prominence to the fact that the development and importance of the pest infestation were affected by the spacing out of the rice planting and has also allowed us to locate the critical periods of the infestations and their economic incidence. These pests consist mainly of lepidopterous stem borers: Chilo sp., Sesamia sp., and Maliarpha separatella.

The second part of the study focused on phytosanitary experiments. Using Decis (Deltamethrin) at 12.5 g a.i. per ha at the intervention thresholds of 5% dead heart and 1% whitehead, has proved to be the most interesting formula as it combines efficiency and profitability.

The system of rational control that has been set up based on phytosanitary survey and insecticide application at threshold levels, presents a double advantage, it reduces the number and cost of interventions, and limits the anarchical use of pesticides, hence their harmful effect on the environment. Such experience in insect pest management will be extended to other rice growing areas throughout the country.

The differential attraction by 2 pigeonpea cultivars has been tested through the oviposition behaviour of Heliothis armigera females in a standardized laboratory assay. Seedlings of a susceptible variety (PPE-50) are under choice conditions significantly more attractive at a distance, and without contact allowed other than those of the resistant variety (PPE-45). The volatile signal is contained in the hexane extract from PPE-50 leaves, as shown in the oviposition assay, and after vacuum distillation is present in the more volatile fractions of the mono- and sesquiterpenoids. These compounds, which are also contained in the hexane extracts of 2 more pigeonpea cultivars, a check of medium susceptibility (T-21) and a wild relative (Atylosia scarabaeoides), were compared by capillary gas chromatography. The 4 pigeonpea varieties were characterized by their specific aromagrams, a method which may also advantageously be used in pigeonpea breeding programs.

The southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella, has expanded its range during this century so that it is now distributed between about 18 and 38°N latitude in Mexico and the United States. The species survives from year to year by entering a facultative larval diapause, and over most of its range it is bivoltine or trivoltine. Fully grown pre-diapausing larvae prepare an overwintering cell in the stalk crown of their host plant, typically maize, and then ecdyse from a spotted to a pigment-free morph at the onset of diapause. Southwestern corn borers originally obtained from southcentral Mexico (19°N latitude) and the United States (33–38°N latitude) were reared on an artificial diet under standardized conditions to compare several of their life history traits. Information is presented about voltinism, photoperiodic responses, growth and reproduction, larval behaviour and ecdyses, and the diapause-associated protein in an attempt to evaluate characteristics that have enabled the species to disperse from a tropical to a temperate region.

Tomatoes, an important tropical crop, suffer greatly from various plant viruses which are transmitted by the tobacco (sweetpotato) whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. Since these viruses cannot be controlled directly, the only path available to the grower is to prevent their transmission. The shortcomings of chemical control are well known and the use of alternative control methods is limited. Consequently, resistant cultivars would be the best solution for the grower. Breeding for resistance to the whiteflies as vectors of viruses has some clear advantages compared with breeding plants resistant to the virus. In search for sources of resistance among wild tomatoes, the two most resistant accessions of Lycopersicon pennella, L. hirsutum and L. hirsutum f. glabratum were selected. Although these accessions are susceptible to the virus, in the field they were only slightly, or not, infested. The resistance of L. pennella was found to be based entirely on the sticky material which is exuded by glandular trichomes located on the leaves and stems. The rate of resistance depends partially on environmental factors like photoperiod and light intensity. A reliable method for quantitative detection of resistance in L. pennella was developed.

Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was introduced in Uganda in 1998 for the biological control of the old association cereal stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). However there is little information on whether this parasitoid will attack new association Lepidoptera, which in turn may have implications on its efficacy on Ch. partellus. This study investigated the incidence of introduced Co. flavipes on Ch. partellus, and new association lepidopteran species and associated effects on its efficacy. Parasitism levels for Co. flavipes in several locations varied between 13.7–34.8% and 1.5–18.8% on Ch. partellus and new association hosts, respectively. Implications for biological control of stemborers in Uganda are discussed.

In West and Central Africa, panicle-feeding mirid bugs, particularly Eurystylus oldi Poppius (Hemiptera: Miridae), are major pests of improved sorghum cultivars. Population dynamics of panicle-feeding bugs were studied on the sorghum cultivar ICSV 197, sown on eight dates each year from 1992 to 1994 at Samanko, Mali. Relationships between weather factors and abundance of paniclefeeding bugs were examined for the three most commonly found mirids, E. oldi, Campylomma spp. and Creontiades pallidus Rambur (representing on average respectively 58, 39 and 2% of all mirid species). Although only one generation of E. oldi could develop between flowering and grain maturity on a particular panicle, there were three successive generations each year during the extended grainmaturing period in the experiment with eight sowing dates, with a major peak in abundance in early October, followed by a gradual decrease until late November. Abundance of Cr. pallidus peaked in late October, while that of Campylomma spp. showed no relationship with date of sowing.

An increase in abundance of E. oldi nymphs (y1) was favoured by high precipitation, reduced maximum temperature and high minimum relative humidity during and 2–3 weeks before the grainfilling period [a strong negative relationship was found with the number consecutive days without precipitation from 78–88 days after sowing (das) (x1): y1 = −11.7x1 + 149.3 (r2 = 0.67)]. The abundance of Cr. pallidus (y2) was correlated with wide temperature ranges and low precipitation during the same periods (notably precipitation frequency from 75–91 das: x2): y2 = −2.28x2 + 24.6 (r2 = 0.65). The abundance of Campylomma spp. (y3) was negatively correlated with amount of rainfall between 19–32 das (x3): y3 = −3.82x3 + 705.9 (r2 = 0.49). Reasons for these trends are suggested and their possible application for management of panicle-feeding bugs discussed.
