We surveyed three locations in West Africa, two in northern Nigeria and one in southern Niger, for the presence of wild alternative hosts of the legume pod borer (LPB) Maruca vitrata Fabricius, which could serve as natural unstructured refugia for transgenic Bacillusthuringiensis (Bt)-cowpea. We surveyed a total of 67 sites in proximity to cowpea fields in the Sudan Savannah (Kano, Nigeria), the Northern Guinea Savannah (Zaria, Nigeria) and the Sahel Savannah (Maradi, Niger) ecological zones. The results indicate that alternative host plants for LPB are scarce or absent during the cowpea-growing season in these areas.

Malaise traps are often used in trapping Muscidae flies for studying species dynamics, but there has been no specific evaluation of the influence of the duration of exposure of the traps in the field and their normal wear and tear on the relative richness and abundance of individuals of different species caught. To evaluate the possible influence of these factors, we installed Malaise traps at Arroio Grande and Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, which are located inside the Campos Sulinos biome in Brazil. In Arroio Grande, new and 18-month-old Malaise traps were installed between March and May, 2004, and in Pelotas, new and 12-month-old traps were installed between April and June of the same year. At each site, the traps were installed 10 m apart, and collections of trapped insects were made at intervals of 7 days. The age of the traps significantly influenced both abundance and richness of the Muscidae trapped, probably because of the changing colour profile at the top of the traps. From these results, we concluded that the use of Malaise traps in the field for long periods to evaluate richness and abundance of muscid flies in biodiversity studies needs re-evaluation.

Species diversity of animals and plants is relevant to pest management in very different ways. Plant diversity provides sources of biologically active natural products and of genes for plant resistance. Animal diversity is involved in both harmful and beneficial interactions between crops and weeds or uncultivated land and in provision of potential biological control agents. The pest management implications of changes in biological diversity therefore need to be considered at a smaller scale in the management of cropping systems and on a larger scale in development programmes and national land use planning.

Citrus orchards in the Nile Delta and middle Egypt were surveyed for predacious soil mites and parasitic nematodes. There were 16 species of predacious mites and the citrus parasitic nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans Cobb. was recorded everywhere. In the medium-heavy soil of the Nile Delta orchards, the general predators or decomposer mites like uropodids were most common. In the light-medium soil of El-Fayoum in middle Egypt, the specialized predator mites like gamasids were most common. In localities where gamasids were common, negligible infestations of citrus parasitic nematodes were reported. Regarding Egypt as a whole, the uropodid mites Uroobovella krantzi (Zaher & Afifi) and Nenteria hypotrichus (El-Borolossy & El-Banhawy) represented about 50% of the sampled mites. The remaining mites were represented by 14 mesostigmatid species, the most common being Gamasiphis pulchellus (Berlese). At least 6% of orchards suffered injurious nematode infestations, 13% critical infestations and 22% moderate infestations, and the remaining 59% were free or with negligible infestations.

A study on the spatial distribution of the silkmoth Anaphe panda (Boisduval) cocoon nests, egg clusters and the host plant Bridelia micrantha (Hochst) Baill. was conducted in two different habitats of the Kakamega Forest of western Kenya: Ikuywa (indigenous forest) and Isecheno (mixed indigenous forest). The mean densities of cocoon nests, egg clusters and B. micrantha were significantly different in the two blocks and were not semi-randomly distributed in the two habitats. The host plants were underdispersed in the indigenous forest, whereas they were overdispersed in the mixed indigenous forest. The cocoon nests were overdispersed and the silkmoth egg clusters were underdispersed in the two blocks of forest. This study reveals that A. panda tends to distribute its egg clusters uniformly over the lower and middle crown of B. micrantha with a preference to eastern localization and confirms the insufficient presence of populations of this silkmoth in a mixed indigenous forest compared with an indigenous forest. Consequently, indigenous forests should be managed in a sustainable way and more indigenous tree species should be used in reforestation campaigns.

Host plant resistance is an important tool in the management of the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar). Although ovipositing females do not discriminate between resistant and susceptible cultivars, plants of resistant cultivars have smaller larval populations and sustain less damage in the field. These observations suggest that lower damage levels observed in resistant cultivars reflect larval success. This study was carried out to evaluate laboratory screening of banana cultivars as a rapid screening method for resistance to the banana weevil by determining the influence of cultivars on weevil survivorship, development duration and adult weight. Larvae were raised on corm pieces of two susceptible, three intermediate and four resistant cultivars, resistance categories having been determined from a previous field screening trial. The developmental period was prolonged in resistant cultivars. However, cultivars had less influence on survivorship and adult weight. Moreover, the ranking of survivorship did not correlate with resistance levels observed in the field. The implications of these findings for laboratory screening of cultivars for resistance to C. sordidus are highlighted.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN) are serious pests of tomato production in Kenya. Accurate identification of the plant parasitic nematodes is important for their effective management. A study conducted to assess their prevalence and identify RKN occurring on tomatoes in Central Kenya showed infestation of the crop in all the three districts. Of the total sampled plants (N = 900), the RKN infestation level ranged from 28 to 62%. RKN disease severity ranged from 2.5 to 5.3 in all the locations. Meloidogyne incognita,M. javanica and M. arenaria were the only species found infesting tomatoes in these areas. Female nematodes sampled from the symptomatic root system that had root galls characteristic of RKN were analysed by isozyme phenotypes of esterase (EST) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH). EST phenotype was polymorphic and enabled identification of the three different species, while MDH was monomorphic. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism with region between mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II and large subunit ribosomal RNA (mtDNA COII-LSUrRNA) using HinfI showed that all isolates of M. incognita could be digested into three restriction fragments of about 1300, 400 and 100 bp, except for one species that showed an additional restriction site, giving four fragments of 900, 420, 380 and 100 bp. The 1800 bp PCR product of M. javanica was not digested by HinfI. Meloidogyne arenaria (EST phenotype A1) PCR product was digested into two restriction fragments of about 1700 and 100 bp, while M. arenaria (EST phenotype A2) had two restriction fragments at 1100 and 100 bp.

Lentil seeds infested with Callosobruchus chinensis (Linnaeus) for 12–15 days were exposed to Dinarmus basalis (Rondani) alone, Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) alone, or to both species, at densities of 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 insects. Intra-specific competition and host emergence decreased with increasing parasitoid density in both D. basalis and A. calandrae, but progeny production of the parasitoids and parasitoid-induced mortality (PIM) increased with increasing parasitoid density. Dinarmus basalis was much more efficient in parasitizing C. chinensis than A. calandrae. Emergence of D. basalis and A. calandrae, and the PIM were highest at a parasitoid density of 32. Parasitoid density and a combination of parasitoids significantly (P<0.01) affected the number and progeny sex ratio of emerged parasitoids. There were significant (P<0.01) effects of inter- and intra-specific competition on host mortality. Host mortality increased with increasing parasitoid density. Parasitoid combination and parasitoid density also significantly affected PIM.

The volatility and mosquito repellency of the essential oil of Hemizygia welwitschii Rolfe (Laminaceae) and its prototype pharmaceutical formulations were examined and compared with those of a commercial mosquito repellent. At ambient temperature (28°C), neat Hemizygia oil had a volatility of 4.47±1.02 mg/cm2/ h for 15 hours, after which the rate declined. The oil evaporated at 200 μg/ cm2/ h from 10% w/w liquid paraffin solutions, and at 60 μg/ cm2/ h from soft paraffin during the first 20 hours, after which the decline in evaporation rate was generally bi-phasic. The oil demonstrated concentration-dependent repellency against the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Its liquid paraffin solutions (5% to 15% concentration) prevented up to 50% of starved mosquitoes from feeding on a blood meal for 6 hours. Lower concentrations were less effective and inhibited feeding for only 1 hour. A 15% w/w oil-in-water emulsion formulation of Hemizygia oil produced 55% feeding deterrence in the mosquitoes for 2 hours. Neither the solution nor the emulsion formulations of the oil provoked any adverse reaction on human skin.

It is evident that our environment has been flooded with pesticides and that some of these have had effects other than those intended. There is no doubt that indiscriminate use of pesticides has the potential to upset temporarily many ecological patterns. Whether this is significant in the long run remains to be seen.

It is sincerely hoped that the experience of the past (especially in the first world) will ensure wiser use of the pesticides in the future (primarily in the third world). It is likely that new pesticides will be developed and that they will bring new problems. Some of these problems may have far-reaching environmental implications in terms of their potential benefits and their propensity for damage. These problems will be compounded by residues of pesticides and a host of other contaminants already present. Therefore, it should and must be everyone's responsibility that the potential benefits from pesticides are maximised. However, such maximisation will be realised only if the environmental implications of their use is understood, and if they are applied with discretion to minimise their side effects.

The purification and characterization of rhodanese, an enzyme that catalyses the detoxification of cyanide, from the gut of the variegated grasshopper (Zonocerus variegatus L.) were carried out to understand the biochemical basis of the survival of this grasshopper living on cyanogenic plants such as cassava. All experiments, including enzyme assay, were carried out at room temperature and all buffers contained 10 mm sodium thiosulphate to stabilize the enzyme. Grasshoppers were caught alive from a cassava farm within the locality and kept frozen until analysis. Each grasshopper was dissected and the gut was removed quickly. Approximately 102 g of the gut were homogenized in three volumes of 0.1 m acetate glycine buffer (pH 7.8) containing ɛ-amino-n-caproic acid. The supernatant was collected by centrifugation at 12,000 rpm, for 30 min at 40 °C. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by a combination of procedures such as ammonium sulphate precipitation, ion-exchange chromatography (CM-Sephadex and DEAE-Sephadex), gel filtration (Sephadex G-75) and Agarose-Blue affinity chromatography. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) and non-SDS–PAGE were used to ascertain the purity of the enzyme. The native and subunit molecular weights of the enzyme were determined by gel filtration on a Bio-Gel P-200 column and SDS–PAGE, respectively. Kinetic parameters were determined by using varying concentrations of one of the substrates at a fixed concentration of the other, and vice versa. Furthermore, the effects of temperature, pH and cations on the activity of the enzyme were investigated. The purified enzyme had a specific activity of 51.7 μmol thiocyanate formed/ml/min/mg protein (U/mg protein) with a yield of about 29%. The apparent molecular weight of the enzyme estimated by Sephadex G-75 gel filtration was 35,400 ± 482 Da and its subunit molecular weight determined by SDS–PAGE was 33,000 ± 212 Da. The Km values of KCN and Na2S2O3 were found to be 29.63 ± 02.87 and 26 ± 03.04 mm, respectively. An optimum pH and temperature of 7.0 and 35 °C, respectively, were obtained for the enzyme. The results of enzyme inhibition showed that the activity of the enzyme was not affected by NH4Cl, MgCl2, CoCl2, CaCl2, MnCl2, NiCl2 and SnCl2, but inhibited by ZnCl2 and BaCl2. In conclusion, these results suggest that the survival of Z. variegatus depends on the presence of the enzyme rhodanese, which shows high activity and has suitable kinetic properties in the gut of the grasshopper that feeds mainly on cassava leaves which are cyanogenic.

Conessine, the steroidal alkaloid of Holarrhena antidysenterica Wall, possesses a wide range of activities against four insect species viz. Aedes aegypti, Dysdercus koenigii, Spodoptera litura and Pieris brassicae. In D. koenigii the compound inhibits the egg hatching of treated adults and nymphs. In Ae. aegypti the larval developmental periods are extended, resulting in a high mortality rate. Such effects are produced at very low dosages of 0.5 to lOppm. Antifeedant activity is observed against larvae of S. litura and P. brassicae at concentrations of 0.005 to 0.2 % of conessine.

Experiments were conducted during two consecutive years (1983 and 1984) on irrigated rice, in the Southwest of Burkina Faso, in order to monitor the seasonal incidence of the rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora H. et G.

The damage incidence is the same whatever the date of planting within the rainy season. Attacks are low during the early growth phase of the rice plants (0 to 3% of “silver shoot”), and increase gradually to reach spectacular levels (20 to 55% of “silver shoot”) between 70 and 90 days after transplantation, after which there is decreased attack.

Parasitism is an important check on the larval population of the pest; up to 77% of parasitized larvae were observed. However, this parasitism due mainly to microhymenoptera, Platygaster diplosisae Risb. and Tetrastichus pachydiplosisae Risb., gets established late.

These results could contribute significantly in developing an IPM process on irrigated rice in Burkina Faso.

A schedule of insecticide spray combining two insecticides: Decis®(deltamethrin) and Systoate® (dimethoate) with four times of spray: 35, 45, 55 and 65 days after planting (DAP) was investigated in order to search for the most effective treatment against Maruca testulalis (Geyer) population on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp). The local cowpea cultivar “Kpodjiguegue” was used to study the onset and fluctuation of M. testulalis larvae infestation on cowpea terminal shoots, flowers and pods. The trial was carried out during the 1985 early cropping season at Abomey-Cala vi. The treatments' effect on M. testulalis in the terminal shoots was not significant at the 5% level of probability because of the very low infestation of this part of the plant. In the flowers and pods, Decis® was better than Systoate® which failed in controlling this borer satisfactorily. In the unsprayed plots (i.e. control), the peak of the natural infestation occurred in the flowers towards 50 DAP and 65% of the flowers were injured. In the pods, up to 89% of infestation by M. testulalis larvae were observed 60 DAP. The lowest yield was recorded from the unprotected plots (322 kg/ha) whereas the treatment 0-Decis®Systoate®Decis® provided the highest yield (1367 kg/ha) and the highest returns.

Life table statistics on the age-specific fecundity and survival of female Spilosoma obliqua Walker reared on sunflower showed a net reproductive rate of 513.6 eggs per female, with approximate generation time of 48.2 days. Its intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.1295, meaning that its population could double in 5.35 days. Spilosoma obliqua on sunflower was parasitised by Apanteles obliquae, Glyptapanteles creatonoti and Carcelia sp.

Extracts of five plants, namely Argemone mexicana, Artemisia absinthium, Cassia occidentalis, Cymbopogon citratus and Siegesbeckia orientalis were tested for their antifeedant and insecticidal effects on third-instar larvae of the cabbage webworm, Crocidolomia binotalis, which is presently one of the most important pests of cruciferous crops in Mauritius. All the five plant species investigated showed significant antifeedant properties, with A. mexicana showing the highest control potential of the five plant species studied against C. binotalis.

The distribution of canine leishmaniasis and figures on infection frequency in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea are given. The clinical picture and most common laboratory findings are reviewed. Leishmania infantum is the aetiological agent of both human and canine forms of visceral leishmaniasis. The proved or suspected vectors of L. infantum are listed and mention is made of wild animals (fox, rat) as possible primary reservoirs of the parasite. Finally, the methods of investigation and control of canine leishmaniasis are discussed.

In studies aimed at optimizing the substrate for rearing Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) under laboratory conditions, the noctuid's oviposition behaviour was studied in the laboratory using pigeonpea leaves, muslin cloth, tissue paper and cotton wool as oviposition substrates in free-choice and no-choice tests. Egg counts revealed the moth's preference for oviposition substrate, in descending order, to be cotton wool, pigeonpea leaves, tissue paper and muslin cloth. The preference index of cotton wool was 65% higher than the least preferred substrate, muslin cloth. A total of 300 eggs per female were laid in the free-choice tests, while 200 were laid in the no-choice assays.

The tropical warehouse moth Ephestia cautella (Walker) is an important storage pest of maize grain. The control of this major moth pest relies heavily on the use of synthetic insecticides. We assessed the biological efficacy of a commercial neem oil (Calneem oil) against E. cautella in the laboratory, using the common grain protectant Actellic as a positive control. Contact toxicity, repellency, effects on oviposition, development and grain damage were assessed. The assays were conducted by treating 100 g of maize grains with Calneem oil concentrations of 3, 5 and 7 ml/l; and Actellic at 2 ml/l. Calneem oil significantly (P < 0.05) reduced oviposition rate, development of eggs and immature stages, and emergence rate of E. cautella progeny in maize grains. Grains treated with Calneem oil had significantly (P < 0.05) reduced grain damage in storage, and the oil had a repellency of 53–70% compared with the negative control. Calneem oil protected maize grain against damage by E. cautella for 10 weeks, compared with 20 weeks protection by Actellic. There was no resistance development to the oil for three generations of E. cautella. The insects that survived treatment with the LC90 concentration (12.2 ml/l) of the Calneem oil laid fewer eggs, and some of their progeny were deformed. Calneem oil provided a good level of protection to maize grains against infestation by E. cautella, and may therefore be a suitable substitute for Actellic.

Upsurges in the populations of the migratory locust Locusta migratoria (L.) occurred in July 2011 at the airport and in sugarcane fields on Shimoji Island, Okinawa, Japan. In sugarcane fields and pathways, dark-coloured nymphs at early instars marched and infested sugarcane leaves. The number of locusts was estimated as approximately 1.4 million. After prompt control by spraying insecticides, the locust populations decreased remarkably in size at the airport and in sugarcane fields. The locust populations at the airport restored gradually and dark-coloured nymphs similar in appearance to typical gregarious forms were found marching on paved roads at the end of August. Insecticides were sprayed again in early September over those areas at the airport where nymphs were abundant. The locust populations rapidly declined and only a few locusts were observed thereafter on the island before winter. These observations indicate the importance of constant monitoring and prompt action for the control of locusts. The seasonal life cycle of this locust species on this island was studied by regularly sampling the locusts in the field, which revealed that this locust species produces three generations per year with different overwintering stages.
