In this paper, a mode-matching procedure is used to prove for the first time the dispersionless behavior of glide symmetry (GS) in corrugated metasurface waveguides. Depending on their field symmetry, the Floquet harmonics have a different impact onto the frequency dispersion, which is reduced with GS when the gap between the surfaces is small. Indeed, the glide-symmetric waveguide is shown to have the same effective propagation features as a scaled mirror-symmetric waveguide with half the period and a doubled gap. We propose closed-form formulas for the effective refractive index of the glide-symmetric waveguide in the first Brillouin zone, having a small groove compared to the period. The closed-form expressions analytically prove the dispersionless behavior of GS.

This paper investigates the performance of 3D-printed dielectric reflectarray antennas (RAs) with wideband behavior and beam-steering capabilities. The designed unit cell consists of a single-layer dielectric element perforated with a square hole, whose side is used to control the local variation of the reflection coefficient. The numerical analysis of the unit cell and of first $52\times52$ reflectarray working in Ka-band, whose scanning capabilities are tested just moving the feed along an arc, confirms that the unit cell has a stable behavior with respect to both the frequency and the direction of arrival of the incident field. In view of these promising capabilities, the proposed unit cell is used to design a bifocal reflectarray with the same size and working in the same frequency band of the first one. Its numerical characterization and the measurements of a prototype prove that the RA is able to provide less than 0.8 dB of gain losses over a scanning range of ±40∘ in the vertical plane, while the bandwidth varies between 13.5% and 28%, depending on the pointing direction. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and highlight the potential of 3D-printing technology for producing high performance, cost-effective RAs with wideband behavior and excellent beam-steering features.

Single-ended and balanced 90–120 GHz microstrip power amplifier MMICs have been designed for cost-sensitive 5G and 6G backhaul in a commercial 6-inch, 0.1-µm GaAs process. At 108 GHz, measured output power is 20.4 and 22.5 dBm, respectively. At 120 GHz, measured output is 12.6 and 17.4 dBm, respectively. This is the highest reported for GaAs, among the highest reported to date for microstrip MMIC amplifiers at these frequencies and competitive with more expensive InP and GaN processes. Measurement is compared with simulation.

The surface deformation of the main reflector in a large radio telescope is closely related to its working efficiency, which is important for some astronomical science studies. Here, we present a deep learning-based surface deformation recovery framework using non-interferometric intensity measurements as input. The recurrent convolutional neural network (RCNN) is developed to establish the inverse mapping relationship between the surface deformation of the main reflector and the intensity images at the aperture plane and at a near-field plane. Meanwhile, a physical forward propagation model is adopted to generate a large amount of data for pre-training in a computationally efficient manner. Then, the inverse mapping relationship is adjusted and improved by transfer learning using experimental data, which achieves a 15-fold reduction in the number of training image sets required, which is helpful to facilitate the practical application of deep learning in this field. In addition, the RCNN model can be trained as a denoiser, and it is robust to the axial positioning error of the measuring points. It is also promising to extend this method to the study of adaptive optics.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology with many promising applications where transmitting power via wired connections is undesirable. However, near-field WPT between magnetically coupled inductors is highly susceptible to positional changes, with power transfer efficiency (PTE) suffering if the coils are misaligned. To combat this effect, many position-independent, self-adaptive, inductive WPT schemes have been developed. Recent work indicates that it is possible to passively achieve high PTE across the operating range with nonlinear capacitors. In this work, the functionality of nonlinear WPT circuits is investigated, and fundamental design equations are derived and validated. A simplified design procedure is proposed for the position-independent self-adaptive WPT using nonlinear capacitors, wherein the ideal capacitance is extracted for each coupling factor. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated with an experimental circuit. Future work in this area is also proposed.

In this paper, two second-order electronically tunable bandpass filters are presented. The filters are implemented in microstrip technology using barium–strontium–titanate (BST) varactors and digitally tunable capacitors (DTC) for tuning the frequency response of the bandpass filters. The filter realized using BST varactors has a 35% tuning range from 900 MHz to 1.275 GHz with an insertion loss variation from 3.1 to 2.6 dB. The absolute bandwidth is nearly constant over the entire tuning range, varying from 64 to 72 MHz (around ±5% variation). The filter realized using DTCs also has a 36% tuning range from 850 MHz to 1.225 GHz with an insertion loss variation from 3.1 to 1.5 dB. The absolute bandwidth is constant over the tuning range, varying from 88 to 98 MHz (around ±5% variation). The bandpass filters are tuned using a single control signal. The tunable bandpass filters are proposed for use in reconfigurable radios.

This research work presents an implantable antenna that operates at 5.8 GHz. By using a radiator with a loop-based design, the antenna can be made smaller. Radiator is made up of three connected rectangular loops. On the substrate’s back side, an I-shaped ground plane is used. As substrate and superstrate, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with dimensions of 7 mm × 5 mm × 0.3 mm is used. The conducting sections are made using copper foil that is 30 µm thick. The suggested antenna is examined by the implantable medical device using realistic human scalp phantom models and a homogenous skin box. Simulated study revealed that it operates around 5.8 GHz with a bandwidth from 5.69 to 5.92 GHz. The specific absorption rate was 0.28 and 0.26 W/kg for skin box and human scalp phantoms, respectively, at 1 mW input power across 1 g volume tissue.

The design of low-profile Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas for various 5G applications is a topic of huge interest in academia, research, and telecommunication sector. In this aspect, a compact and low-profile 5G MIMO antenna has been designed and analyzed for various 5G applications, specifically for the 24 GHz bands (24.25–24.45 GHz and 25.05–25.25 GHz) and local multipoint distribution system band (27.5–28.35 GHz) of the 5G spectrum. The proposed antenna structure is 20 × 20 × 1 mm3 in dimension. Two spade-shaped radiators composed of Copper (annealed) material are placed orthogonally to improve isolation and maintain signal diversity. Rogers RT 5880 is used as the material for substrate. The antenna exhibits a wide bandwidth of 21.5–28.5 GHz. The mutual isolation |S21| has been maintained ≤29 dB due to the insertion of a T-shaped parasitic strip in between the radiating elements. Novelty in design and superiority in performance has been observed when compared with related antenna categories.

An E-band Cassegrain switched beam high-gain antenna concept for 5G backhauling systems is proposed in this article. The antenna requirements target the compensation of small misalignments (within ±1 degrees in both azimuth and elevation planes) in E-band backhauling links due to adverse weather conditions or thermal deformations. The intended antenna is able to realize beam-switching operations by using a feed-array architecture based on a 7 × 7 array of cavity-backed magnetoelectric (ME) dipoles, where every element is capable of providing a steering of ±0.33 degrees in both the elevation and the azimuth planes. The ME dipole illuminators combined with a Cassegrain reflector provide a gain of 52 dBi within the whole scanning range. Besides, they can be easily integrable with the front-end modules, thus being an easily implementable and low-cost alternative to other more complex solutions based on horns or lens antennas.

Electronic measurement systems in the THz frequency range are often bulky and expensive devices. While some compact single-chip systems operating in the high millimeter-wave frequency range have recently been published, compact measurement systems in the low THz frequency range are still rare. The emergence of new silicon-germanium (SiGe) semiconductor technologies allow the integration of system components, like oscillators, frequency multipliers, frequency dividers, and antennas, operating in the low THz frequency range, into a compact monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC), which contains most components to implement a low-cost and compact frequency-modulated continuous-wave-radar transceiver. This article presents a single transceiver solution containing all necessary components. It introduces a $0.48\,\mathrm{THz}$ radar transceiver MMIC with a tuning range of $43\,\mathrm{GHz}$ and an output power of up to $-9.4\,\mathrm{dBm}$ in the SG13G3 $130\,\mathrm{nm}$ SiGe technology by IHP. The MMIC is complemented by a dielectric lens antenna design consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, providing up to $39.3\,\mathrm d\mathrm B\mathrm i$ of directivity and half-power beam widths of 0.95∘ in transmit and receive direction. The suppression of clutter from unwanted targets deviating from antenna boresight more than 6∘ is higher than $24.6\,\mathrm d \mathrm B$ in E- and H-Plane.

In this study, tunability of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission window by low-volume dielectric loadings is presented both numerically and experimentally in S-band. The EIT-like transmission behavior is obtained by a metamaterial, composed of an electric resonator and a closed-ring resonator patterned on a dielectric substrate. The frequency tuning is obtained by two applications called horizontal sliding application (HSA) and vertical sliding application based on sliding of the low-volume loadings from the edges to geometric center (i.e., inward). For both applications, the frequency tuning has been investigated for dielectric loadings which have relative permittivity of 2.2, 3, 4.5, and 6.15. The results reveal that the proposed sliding applications are effective on tuning the transmission peak frequency. An achieved 1136 and 971 MHz absolute spectral shifts and corresponding 6.34% and 5.41% absolute sensitivities by simulations and measurements, respectively, are the best results which are obtained for HSA at 5 mm shift value. Moreover, 14.67% sensitivity is obtained in simulations for the complete dielectric loading on the resonator in response to the increase in refractive index from 1 to 1.5. It is believed that the proposed applications will contribute to the existent sensing studies.

In this article, different 2D and 3D mask styles for synthesizing large array pattern shaping to meet the requirements of modern applications are realized. The composition of the different beam pattern shaping is achieved by comparing the array factor with the proposed masks whose details (upper and lower borders) are predefined according to the designer. The generated pattern shapes are as follows: unscanned 2D single-pencil beam, scanned 2D pencil beam, 2D multi-beam scanning, 2D wide flat beam with little ripple, unscanned 3D single-pencil beam, 3D multi-beam scanning, and footprint (or contour) pattern for linear and planar arrays. The process of constructing these patterns is followed by predicting the amplitude-only weights (i.e., the phase weighting is considered zero in all computations) of the elements using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. In all proposed masks, different sidelobe levels are controlled, ranging from −20 to −100 dB. Also, the radiated beamwidth is controlled, ranging from 0.1334 rad (7.6 deg.) to 0.4 rad (23 deg.). The analysis and construction of linear and planar array arrangements depend on the formulation of antenna array theory through the implementation of the proposed (estimated) equations using MATLAB code. The simulation results showed the effectiveness of the proposed methods in controlling the pattern shape according to the required modern trends.

An absorptive reconfigurable bandstop filter (BSF) with compact size and ultra-wide frequency tuning range using distributed lossy resonators is presented. In each reconfigurable bandstop resonator, a varactor and a PIN diode are utilized as the control and absorption devices. When the PIN diodes are in off and on states, the upper and lower frequency tuning ranges of stopbands can be obtained, respectively. Therefore, the ultra-wide total frequency tuning range which is the combination of the upper and lower frequency tuning ranges can be realized. Meanwhile, the stopband frequency and bandwidth tuning can be independently controlled by bias voltages. The resistances in the varactors and PIN diodes can dissipate the electromagnetic power and thus result in absorptive stopband without using extra absorptive circuits. The stopband suppression level and stopband absorption ratio are proportional to the number of distributed lossy resonators. For demonstration, an absorptive reconfigurable BSF prototype using six pairs of distributed lossy resonators is designed and fabricated. The measured total frequency tuning range is 3.03–6.39 GHz (71%) with the suppression level of 20 dB, while the frequency tuning range with the suppression level of 10 dB is 2.04–6.39 GHz (103%).

This paper investigates if there is an optimum design of loaded-line phase shifters with respect to phase shift/loss figure of merit (FOM) and linearity. The investigation was performed by comparing six loaded-line phase shifters that were implemented in printed circuit board (PCB)technology with shunt-loaded hyperabrupt varactor-diodes. It was demonstrated that the hyperabrupt varactor’s C-V characteristics must be modeled with high accuracy to predict the nonlinear behavior. A polynomial varactor model was employed and experimentally validated. To extend the range of investigated parameter values, the extracted model was scaled and evaluated further in a circuit simulator. The investigation reveals that for a given varactor-capacitance, the phase shift/loss FOM is improved if the varactor-capacitance is evenly distributed and the unit cell length is much shorter than a quarter wavelength. The study demonstrates that the phase shift/loss depends mainly on the distribution of varactor-capacitance and Q factor. The intermodulation (IM) distortion is primarily proportional to the total varactor-capacitance per unit cell. The study also revealed that an increase in the varactor’s Q factor results in higher IM. Therefore, it is a trade-off between low loss and low IM.

This paper presents a three-stage E-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) fabricated in a 28-nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor High-Performance Compact Plus process. The proposed E-band LNA achieves a peak gain of 16.8 dB, exhibiting a gain variation of less than ±0.5 dB across the frequency range of 67.8–90.4 GHz. The measured 3-dB gain bandwidth spans from 64 to 93.8 GHz, and the minimum measured noise figure (NF) is 3.8 dB. By employing a one-stage common-source with a two-stage cascode topology, the proposed E-band LNA demonstrates competitiveness in terms of gain flatness and NF when compared to recently published E-band CMOS LNAs.

By combining the technique of energy selective surface and frequency selective rasorber, an energy selective rasorber is proposed, which performs selective energy protection in the low communication frequency band (0.8–2 GHz) and wave-absorbing property in the high-frequency band (6–18 GHz). The design consists of two layers, of which the bottom one contains a lumped diode structure for energy selection function in the transmission band, while together with the top layer, they perform a wideband wave absorbing function. The simulated and measured results agree well with each other, and both show good absorption in 6–18 GHz and energy-selective property around 1.86 GHz. That is, when the incident power changes from −30 to 14 dBm, the reflection coefficient changes from below −22 dB to above −2 dB, while the transmission coefficient changes from above −3 dB to below −17 dB.

With the rapid development of communication technology, the researches of multi-band filtering circuits have become more and more important. Multimode resonator (MMR) is one of the vital methods to provide multi-resonant modes within a single design. In this paper, a dual-band ultra-wideband bandpass filter (UWB-BPF) using stepped impedance stub-loaded resonators (SI-SLR) is presented. The main advantage of using SI-SLR is to have better performance with multimode behavior and more parameters to control resonant modes. SI-SLR combines the advantages of SIR and SLR structures, which gives a compact, high-performance multiband filter. The proposed filter design has compact size, sharp and flat response with low insertion loss (IL), low return loss (RL), and high band-to-band rejection. The filter is designed for UWB communication in wireless body area networks and fabricated on Arlon substrate with relative permittivity ${\varepsilon_{\textrm{r}}} = 3.25$, thickness $0.8\;{\textrm{mm}}$. The resulted dual-bands are centered at $4{\textrm{ GHz}}$ and $8.3{\textrm{ GHz}}$ with fractional bandwidths $37{\textrm{% }}$ and $48{\textrm{%}}$. The simulation was carried out using CST Microwave Studio. The filter provides good passband performances, with IL 0.49 dB and 0.31 dB at the center frequency of lower and higher bands, respectively. The band-to-band 40 dB rejection is realized by adding circular spiral at the input/output of the filter.

A systematic design approach is presented for the design of broadband high-efficiency power amplifiers (PAs) by combining an improved ring-resonant filter matching network with a series of continuous modes. The improved ring-resonant matching network presented can effectively enhance out-of-band attenuation and sharp roll-off characteristics by adding a compensation structure with parallel stub. To verify the proposed design theory, a 10-W GaN HEMT device is designed and fabricated. The test results indicate that from the operating frequency band of 0.55−3.3 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 142.9%, a saturated output power of 38.5−42 dBm, drain efficiency of 58.2−70.3%, and a gain of 8.5–12 dB can be achieved under 3 dB gain compression, indicating the rationality of the design theory.

In this article, a low phase noise signal source to be used as local oscillator in pulse Doppler radio frequency (PDRF) sensor is proposed. Innovative design techniques for realization of the low phase noise frequency source using phase-locked loop (PLL) and dielectric resonator (DR) are presented. Qualitative investigations have been carried out on the effect of phase noise in PDRF sensor performance. An X-band vibration resistant PLL-based frequency source with phase noise better than −95 dBc at 1 kHz frequency offset has been designed here. It also presents the design of a 7.6 GHz low phase noise, vibration resistant DR oscillator. Systematic analysis of the key design aspects, their thermal-vibrational stability, and ease of integration with hybrid microwave integrated circuits have been disclosed. A prototype board is fabricated, assembled in a compact mechanical enclosure of dimension 55 × 55 × 15 mm3. Finally, developed module is experimentally validated under 7.6 g rms magnitude random vibration test in three axes and compared results with other state of-the-art similar works. The comparison clearly shows the merit of present research work over other similar existing works.

A novel thinned antenna element distribution for cancelling grating lobes (GLs) as well as for reducing phase shifters (PSs) is presented for a two-dimensional phased-array automotive radar application. First, an efficient clustering technique of vertical adjacent elements is employed with array thinning for a PS reduction of 66.7%. In the proposed distribution, several single-element radiators (non-clustered antenna elements) are placed in the vertical direction with specific spacing in a grid of 16 × 12 (192) elements with λ/2 pitch. This disrupts the periodicity of phase-centers after element-clustering and takes a role as steerable GL canceller with capabilities of tracking and nullifying the GL at any scan angle. The proposed distribution enables beam steering up to ±60° in the azimuth plane, as well as ±25° in the elevation plane with cancelled GL and sidelobes. Furthermore, the proposed distribution has been efficiently calibrated with all elements activated by introducing the code division multiple access technique. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work represents the first fully calibrated state-of-the-art thinned distribution phased-array including a novel steerable GL canceller to track and nullify GLs.
