We examined the association between multidrug resistance and socioeconomic status (SES), analyzing microbiological and ZIP-code–level socioeconomic data. Using generalized linear models, we determined that multidrug resistance is significantly and persistently more prevalent in samples taken from patients residing in low-income ZIP codes versus high-income ZIP codes in North Carolina.

We explored experiences and perceptions surrounding the Self-Stewardship Time-Out Program (SSTOP) intervention across implementation sites to improve antimicrobial use. Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted with Antibiotic Stewardship physicians and pharmacists, from which 5 key themes emerged. SSTOP may serve to achieve sustainable promotion of antibiotic use improvements.

Beginning in 2018, a quality improvement collaborative initiative in Brazil successfully reduced the baseline incidence density of healthcare-associated infections in intensive care settings after 2 years. We describe the adaptations of the quality improvement interventions as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged and how the pandemic affected the project outcomes.

The severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) delta variant is highly transmissible, and current vaccines may have reduced effectiveness in preventing symptomatic infection. Using epidemiological and genomic analyses, we investigated an outbreak of the variant in an acute-care setting among partially and fully vaccinated individuals. Effective outbreak control was achieved using standard measures.

Using statewide surveillance, we describe candidemia in Connecticut during 1998–2000 and 2019. In 2019, candidemia was more frequently associated with community-onset and non-albicans Candida species and less frequently associated with central vascular catheters, recent surgery, and in-hospital mortality. Understanding changes in candidemia can optimize clinical management and prevention strategies.

We report an outbreak of dermatitis associated with Ornithonysus bacoti and Liponyssoides sanguineus infestation in an acute ambulatory care setting. Healthcare workers developed dermatitis prior to the identification of the outbreak. A collaborative team effort resulted in complete eradication.

We performed a point-prevalence study of antimicrobial prescriptions in 9 pediatric postacute and long-term care (pPALTC) settings. Antimicrobials were prescribed for 5%–7% of residents including infectious (41%), noninfectious (24%), prophylaxis (24%), and unknown (11%) indications. Macrolides were often prescribed for noninfectious indications. Developing treatment guidelines are antimicrobial stewardship opportunities for pPALTC.

Data from the National Healthcare Safety Network were analyzed to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) during 2021. Standardized infection ratios were significantly higher than those during the prepandemic period, particularly during 2021-Q1 and 2021-Q3. The incidence of HAI was elevated during periods of high COVID-19 hospitalizations.
