Let f be a modular form with complex multiplication (CM) and p an odd prime that is inert in the CM field. We construct two p-adic L-functions for the symmetric square of f, one of which has the same interpolating properties as the one constructed by Delbourgo and Dabrowski (A. Dabrowski and D. Delbourgo, S-adic L-functions attached to the symmetric square of a newform, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 74(3) (1997), 559–611), whereas the other one has a similar interpolating properties but corresponds to a different eigenvalue of the Frobenius. The symmetry between these two p-adic L-functions allows us to define the plus and minus p-adic L-functions à la Pollack (R. Pollack, on the p-adic L-function of a modular form at a supersingular prime, Duke Math. J. 118(3) (2003), 523–558). We also define the plus and minus p-Selmer groups analogous to the ones defined by Kobayashi (S. Kobayashi, Iwasawa theory for elliptic curves at supersingular primes, Invent. Math. 152(1) (2003), 1–36). We explain how to relate these two sets of objects via a main conjecture.

A subgroup H of a finite group G is called SS-supplemented in G if there exists a subgroup K of G such that HK = G and H ∩ K is S-quasinormal in K. In this paper, we characterize the finite groups in which every subgroup is SS-supplemented and the influence of SS-supplementation of some subgroups on the structure of finite groups is considered. Some recent results on SS-quasinormal subgroups and C-supplemented subgroups are strengthened and enriched.

First, we classify a real hypersurface of a non-flat complex space form with (i) semi-parallel T(=£ξg), and (ii) recurrent T. Next, we characterise a real hypersurface admitting the generalised η-Ricci soliton in a non-flat complex space form.

A-Weyl's theorem and property (ω), as two variations of Weyl's theorem, were introduced by Rakočević. In this paper, we study a-Weyl's theorem and property (ω) for functions of bounded linear operators. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for an operator T to satisfy that f(T) obeys a-Weyl's theorem (property (ω)) for all f ∈ Hol(σ(T)). Also we investigate the small-compact perturbations of operators satisfying a-Weyl's theorem (property (ω)) in the setting of separable Hilbert spaces.

We continue our investigation of the general notion of universal enveloping algebra introduced in [A. Ardizzoni, A Milnor–Moore type theorem for primitively generated braided Bialgebras, J. Algebra 327(1) (2011), 337–365]. Namely, we study a universal enveloping algebra when it is of Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt (PBW) type, meaning that a suitable PBW-type theorem holds. We discuss the problem of finding a basis for a universal enveloping algebra of PBW type: as an application, we recover the PBW basis both of an ordinary universal enveloping algebra and of a restricted enveloping algebra. We prove that a universal enveloping algebra is of PBW type if and only if it is cosymmetric. We characterise braided bialgebra liftings of Nichols algebras as universal enveloping algebras of PBW type.

In this paper we use an example of Mukai to construct semistable bundles of rank 3 with six independent sections on a general curve of genus 9 or 11 with Clifford index strictly less than the Clifford index of the curve. The example also allows us to show the non-emptiness of some Brill–Noether loci with negative expected dimension.

A compact hyperbolic surface of genus g is called an extremal surface if it admits an extremal disc, a disc of the largest radius determined by g. Our problem is to find how many extremal discs are embedded in non-orientable extremal surfaces. It is known that non-orientable extremal surfaces of genus g > 6 contain exactly one extremal disc and that of genus 3 or 4 contain at most two. In the present paper we shall give all the non-orientable extremal surfaces of genus 5, and find the locations of all extremal discs in those surfaces. As a consequence, non-orientable extremal surfaces of genus 5 contain at most two extremal discs.

To any walk in a quiver, we associate a Laurent polynomial. When the walk is the string of a string module over a 2-Calabi–Yau tilted algebra, we prove that this Laurent polynomial coincides with the corresponding cluster character of the string module up to an explicit normalising monomial factor.

Historical note. A non-orientable surface of genus 2 (meaning 2 cross-caps) is popularly known as the Klein bottle. However, the term Klein surface comes from Felix Klein's book “On Riemann's Theory of Algebraic Functions and their Integrals” (1882) where he introduced such surfaces in the final chapter.

We discuss the minimum of Willmore functional of torus in a Riemannian manifold N, especially for the case that N is a product manifold. We show that when N = S2 × S1, the minimum of W(T2) is 0, and when N = R2 × S1, there exists no torus having least Willmore functional. When N = H2(−c) × S1, and x = γ × S1, the minimum of W(x) is .

We compare the reduced Drinfeld doubles of the composition subalgebras of the category of representations of the Kronecker quiver and the category of coherent sheaves on ℙ1. Using this approach, we show that the Drinfeld–Beck isomorphism for the quantized enveloping algebra Uv() is a corollary of an equivalence between the derived categories Db(Rep()) and Db(Coh(ℙ1)). This technique allows to reprove several results on the integral form of Uv().

The aim of this note is to present a new, elementary proof of a result of Baas and Madsen on the mod p cohomology of certain quotients of the spectrum BP.

Let Mn be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature H satisfying |H| ≤ ϵ(n) in a unit sphere Sn+1(1), n ≤ 8 and S the square of the length of the second fundamental form of M. There exists a constant δ(n, H) > 0, which depends only on n and H such that if S0 ≤ S ≤ S0 + δ(n, H), then S ≡ S0 and M is isometric to a Clifford hypersurface, where ϵ(n) is a sufficiently small constant depending on n and .

It is shown that if G is a hypercentral group with all subgroups subnormal, and if the torsion subgroup of G is a π-group for some finite set π of primes, then G is nilpotent. In the case where G is not hypercentral there is a section of G that is much like one of the well-known Heineken-Mohamed groups. It is also shown that if G is a residually nilpotent group with all subgroups subnormal whose torsion subgroup satisfies the above condition then G is nilpotent.

In this paper, we deal with the global existence and blow-up of solutions to a doubly degenerative parabolic system with nonlinear boundary conditions. By constructing various kinds of sub- and super-solutions and using the basic properties of M-matrix, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions for global existence of non-negative solutions, which extend the recent results of Zheng, Song and Jiang (S. N. Zheng, X. F. Song and Z. X. Jiang, Critical Fujita exponents for degenerate parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 298 (2004), 308–324), Xiang, Chen and Mu (Z. Y. Xiang, Q. Chen, C. L. Mu, Critical curves for degenerate parabolic equations coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, Appl. Math. Comput. 189 (2007), 549–559) and Zhou and Mu (J. Zhou and C. L Mu, On critical Fujita exponents for degenerate parabolic system coupled via nonlinear boundary flux, Pro. Edinb. Math. Soc. 51 (2008), 785–805) to more general equations.

In this paper, we first summarise the progress for the famous Chern conjecture, and then we consider n-dimensional closed hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature H in the unit sphere n+1 with n ≤ 8 and generalise the result of Cheng et al. (Q. M. Cheng, Y. J. He and H. Z. Li, Scalar curvature of hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in a sphere, Glasg. Math. J. 51(2) (2009), 413–423). In order to be precise, we prove that if |H| ≤ ϵ(n), then there exists a constant δ(n, H) > 0, which depends only on n and H, such that if S0 ≤ S ≤ S0 + δ(n, H), then S = S0 and M is isometric to the Clifford hypersurface, where ϵ(n) is a sufficiently small constant depending on n.

We provide sufficient conditions for a Banach space-valued function to be scalarly bounded, which do not require to test on the whole dual space. Some applications in vector integration are also given.

We study the following nonlinear Dirichlet boundary value problem: where Ω is a bounded domain in ℝN(N ≥ 2) with a smooth boundary ∂Ω and g ∈ C(Ω × ℝ) is a function satisfying for all x ∈ Ω. Under appropriate assumptions, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions when g(x, t) is not odd in t.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the algebraic double S1-transfer, in particular the classes in the two-line of the Adams–Novikov spectral sequence which are the image of comodule primitives of the MU-homology of ℂP∞ × ℂP∞ via the algebraic double transfer. These classes are analysed by two related approaches: the first, p-locally for p ≥ 3, by using the morphism induced in MU-homology by the chromatic factorisation of the double transfer map together with the f′-invariant of Behrens (for p ≥ 5) (M. Behrens, Congruences between modular forms given by the divided β-family in homotopy theory, Geom. Topol.13(1) (2009), 319–357). The second approach (after inverting 6) uses the algebraic double transfer and the f-invariant of Laures (G. Laures, The topological q-expansion principle, Topology38(2) (1999), 387–425).

In this paper we look at presentations of subgroups of finitely presented groups with infinite cyclic quotients. We prove that if H is a finitely generated normal subgroup of a finitely presented group G with G/H cyclic, then H has ascending finite endomorphic presentation. It follows that any finitely presented indicable group without free semigroups has the structure of a semidirect product H ⋊ ℤ, where H has finite ascending endomorphic presentation.
