A small brachiopod fauna of early Permian age is recorded from pebbly mudstones and sandstones of the Phuket (Kaeng Krachan) Group at the Thai islands of Ko Muk, and Ko Phi Phi in the Andaman Sea. Most species belong to genera found in temperate to high Permian palaeolatitudes, whereas other Permian faunas from Thailand are strong in tropical affinities, suggesting that the pebbly mudstones are cool water deposits, contemporaneous with the late Asselian glacial deposits of Gondwana. New taxa are Arctitreta percostata sp.nov., Komukia solita gen.nov., sp.nov. (Rugosochonetidae), Cancrinelloides monticulus sp.nov., Rhynchopora culta sp.nov., Arionthia sapa sp.nov. and Elasmata retusus gen.nov., sp.nov. (Heterelasminidae).

Meta-sediments in the Larsemann Hills that preserve a coherent stratigraphy, form a cover sequence deposited upon basement of mafic–felsic granulite. Their outcrop pattern defines a 10 kilometre wide east–west trending synclinal trough structure in which basement–cover contacts differ in the north and the south, suggesting tectonic interleaving during a prograde, D1 thickening event. Subsequent conditions reached low-medium pressure granulite grade, and structures can be divided into two groups, D2 and D3, each defined by a unique lineation direction and shear sense. D2 structures which are associated with the dominant gneissic foliation in much of the Larsemann Hills, contain a moderately east-plunging lineation indicative of west-directed thrusting. D2 comprises a colinear fold sequence that evolved from early intrafolial folds to late upright folds. D3 structures are associated with a high-strain zone, to the south of the Larsemann Hills, where S3 is the dominant gneissic layering and folds sequences resemble D2 folding. Outside the D3 high-strain zone occurs a low-strain D3 window, preserving low-strain D3 structures (minor shear bands and upright folds) that partly re-orient D2 structures. All structures are truncated by a series of planar pegmatites and parallel D4 mylonite zones, recording extensional dextral displacements.

D2 assemblages include coexisting garnet–orthopyroxene pairs recording peak conditions of ∼ 7 kbar and ∼ 780°C. Subsequent retrograde decompression textures partly evolved during both D2 and D3 when conditions of ∼ 4–5 kbar and ∼ 750°C were attained. This is followed by D4 shear zones which formed around 3 kbar and ∼ 550°C.

It is tempting to combine D2–4 structures in one tectonic cycle involving prograde thrusting and thickening followed by retrograde extension and uplift. The available geochronological data, however, present a number of interpretations. For example, D2 was possibly associated with a clockwise P–T path at medium pressures around ∼ 1000 Ma, by correlation with similar structures developed in the Rauer Group, whilst D3 and D4 events occurred in response to extension and heating at low pressures at ∼ 550 Ma, associated with the emplacement of numerous granitoid bodies. Thus, decompression textures typical for the Larsemann Hills granulites maybe the combined effect of two separate events.

A number of intra-continental alkaline volcanic sequences in NW Turkey were emplaced along localized extensional gaps within dextral strike-slip fault zones prior to the initiation of the North Anatolian Fault Zone. This study presents new palaeomagnetic and 40Ar–39Ar geochronological results from the lava flows of NW Turkey as a contribution towards understanding the Neogene–Quaternary tectonic evolution of the region and possible roles of block rotations in the kinematic history of the region. 40Ar–39Ar analyses of basalt groundmass indicate that the major volume of alkaline lavas of NW Turkey spans about 4 million years of episodic volcanic activity. Palaeomagnetic results reveal clockwise rotations as high as 73° in Thrace and 33° anticlockwise rotations in the Biga Peninsula. Movement of some of the faults delimiting the areas of lava flows and the timing of volcanic eruptions are both older than the initiation age of the North Anatolian Fault Zone, implying that the region experienced transcurrent tectonics during Late Miocene to Pliocene times and that some of the presently active faults in the region are reactivated pre-existing structures.

The Western Gneiss Region of Norway is a continental terrane that experienced Caledonian high-pressure and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism. Most rocks in this terrane show either peak-Caledonian eclogite-facies assemblages or are highly strained and equilibrated under late-Caledonian amphibolite-facies conditions. However, three kilometre-size rock bodies (Flatraket, Ulvesund and Kråkenes) in Outer Nordfjord preserve Pre-Caledonian igneous and granulite-facies assemblages and structures. Where these assemblages are preserved, the rocks are consistently unaffected by Caledonian deformation. The three bodies experienced high-pressure conditions (20–23 kbar) but show only very localized (about 5%) eclogitization in felsic and mafic rocks, commonly related to shear zones. The preservation of Pre-Caledonian felsic and mafic igneous and granulite-facies assemblages in these bodies, therefore, indicates widespread (∼ 95%) metastability at pressures higher than other metastable domains in Norway. Late-Caledonian amphibolite-facies retrogression was limited. The degree of reaction is related to the protolith composition and the interaction of fluid and deformation during the orogenic cycle, whereby metastability is associated with a lack of deformation and lack of fluids, either as a catalyst or as a component in hydration reactions. The three bodies appear to have been far less reactive than the external gneisses in this region, even though they followed a similar pressure–temperature evolution. The extent of metastable behaviour has implications for the protolith of the Western Gneiss Region, for the density evolution of high-pressure terranes and hence for the geodynamic evolution of mountain belts.

Tectonic implications of 32 new potassium-argon age determinations of minerals and rocks of Singhbhum and adjacent regions are discussed along with those of recent structural, stratigraphic and petrologic studies, and some pre-existing geochronologic data. Three distinct orogenic cycles with closing dates at c. 3200, 2700 and 850 m.y. respectively have been recognized. The earliest cycle is represented by the Older Metamorphic Group of metasediments with associated basic intrusives and biotite granodiorite gneiss; they occur mainly as relics within the huge Singhbhum granitic complex. Emplacement of the latter (c. 2700 m.y.) marks the culmination of the Iron Ore orogenic cycle which is characterized by the low-grade metamorphic Iron Ore Group sediments and volcanics and associated basic intrusives. Along the northern and eastern edges of the stabilized Iron Ore orogenic belt, thick sedimentation of the Singhbhum and Gangpur Groups (?2000–1700 m.y.) was followed by large scale basic volcanic activity (1700–1600 m.y.); these rocks were folded and regionally metamorphosed in several phases between c. 1550 and c. 850 m.y. (Singhbhum orogenic cycle); extensive thrusting and granitization occurred in the later part of the cycle.

Evidence from sedimentology and conodont biostratigraphy is used to reinterpret the mid-Homerian (Late Wenlock) succession on Gotland, Sweden. A new conodont zonation includes from below: the Ozarkodina bohemica longa Zone (including five subzones), the Kockelella ortus absidata Zone and the Ctenognathodus murchisoni Zone (two taxa are named, Ozarkodina bohemica longa and Pseudooneotodus linguicornis). These new zones are integrated with facies in order to correlate strata and infer the major depositional environments and the controls on deposition during the mid-Homerian Mulde Event. Reef-associated and skeletal carbonate deposition predominated before and after the event, i.e. during the uppermost O. s. sagitta Zone and, again, in the C. murchisoni Zone. These periods are characterized by the expansion of reefs and shoal facies across marls in the topmost Slite Group on eastern Gotland and in the lower parts of the Klinteberg Formation on western Gotland, respectively. The intervening O. b. longa and K. o. absidata zones are initially characterized by rapid facies changes, including siliciclastic deposition, and later stabilisation of a carbonate depositional system. The composition of sediments and depositional rates are closely related to the creation and destruction of accommodation space and reflects a classical case of depositional bias of the carbonate and siliciclastic depositional systems. Based on coastline migration, stratal boundaries, and the stratigraphic position of major reef belts, several facies associations can be fitted into a sequence stratigraphic model for platform evolution. A highstand systems tract (HST) situation prevailed prior to, and during the early part of the event; the upper Slite Group including the lower Fröjel Formation. This HST was characterized by prolific skeletal production and regional reef development except for during the latest stage when carbonate production declined at the onset of the Mulde Event. Platform growth was inhibited during a following regressive systems tract (RST) when regional siliciclastic deposition predominated; the Gannarve Member. The subsequent lowstand resulted in regional emersion and karstification, i.e. a complete termination of the platform. The post-extinction transgressive systems tract (TST) is exclusively composed of non-skeletal carbonates; the Bara Member of the Halla Formation. Re-occurrence of reefs and a prolific skeletal production marks platform recovery during a second HST; the remaining Halla and the lower Klinteberg formations. Integration of high-resolution biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy reveals that the major physical control on platform evolution was a 5th order eustatic sea-level change during an early part of the Mulde Event, and that the bulk of the strata accumulated when the platform aggraded and prograded during the highstand systems tracts. Thus, Silurian oceanic events and associated sea-level changes had profound impact on the neritic carbonate system. The Gotland-based middle and late Homerian sea-level curve shows two rapid regressions, both leading to truncation of highstand systems tracts. The first lowstand occurred at the very end of the C. lundgreni Chron, and the second at the end of the Co.? ludensis Chron. The intervening interval was characterized by stillstand or possibly slow transgression.

The Ballantrae complex, variously interpreted in the light of plate tectonics, is reappraised on the basis of comparisons with ophiolites of the Newfoundland Appalachians and the southwestern Pacific. All the main components of a typical ophiolite sequence can be recognized although the sequence has been greatly disturbed by post-emplacement Caledonian deformation. The presence of a garnet granulite-amphibolite ‘aureole’ beneath the peridotite member of the complex is confirmed, thus establishing the affinity of the complex to other ophiolite-amphibolite associations of the Appalachian and Alpine systems. Rock units previously described as agglomerates are re-interpreted as olistostromes, and the important Pinbain Beach ‘shaly group’ containing fragments of ophiolitic debris, garnet-ariegite, and glaucophane schist, is considered to be a Wildflysch unit of Middle Arenig age. The olistostromes were deposited following obduction of oceanic lithosphere represented by the ultramafic and mafic rocks of the Ballantrae complex. Recognition of the complex as overthrust ophiolite removes certain constraints on the position of a Lower Paleozoic subduction zone within the Southern Uplands.

Streptichnus narbonnei igen. et isp. nov., a new trace fossil from the upper part of the Spitskop Member of the Urusis Formation, southern Namibia, consists of clusters of unidirectionally curved radial elements, in which individual elements typically are composed of imbricated sickle–shaped segments somewhat comparable to those of Treptichnus pedum. Such complex trace fossils generally are found only in Cambrian or younger strata. This opens to question the position of the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary in the Nama Group, suggesting that it may locally be within the uppermost part of the Urusis Formation, rather than at the base of the Nomtsas Formation.

In the past there have been two main lines of approach to the glacial problems of East Anglia:—

(1) Attempts to find out the number of. glacial and interglacial deposits; and

(2) The direction or directions of ice-movement as shown by the constituent materials.

A fresh investigation of the boulder clays has been undertaken, combining as far as possible these two points of view, with special attention (so far) to the varieties of “Chalky Boulder Clay” (see Baden-Powell, 1948, pp. 287–8).

Well-established Late Proterozoic tillites are widely distributed in Svalbard, East and North Greenland, the Norwegian and Swedish Caledonides, Scotland, northwestern Ireland, western USSR, the Urals, Newfoundland and the Appalachians. Recent biostratigraphic and geochronometric data have provided the following sequence of glacial events. The earliest evidence of glaciation is represented by tillites in Newfoundland, Scotland and possibly NE Svalbard, and may have taken place in Late Riphean (sensu Vidal) or Sturtian (sensu Harland) time, perhaps c. 800 Ma ago. A glacial period in Vendian time, the Varangian, centred on 650 Ma was a much more severe climatic event, represented in all the above mentioned areas except Newfoundland. Two Varangian glacial epochs are recorded in Svalbard, East Greenland, northern Norway and possibly western USSR, and although most of the deposits are marine, terrestrial conditions prevailed in some areas with associated periglacial phenomena. The earlier epoch was completed before 650 Ma; the later one occurred within the range c. 650–610 Ma.

A tectonic reconstruction of the region places eastern Svalbard adjacent to East Greenland, which has implications for major strike-slip motions in late and post-Caledonian times. A discrete ice-sheet is envisaged, centred on the western USSR (terrestrial tillites) with ice flowing out to the then peripheral area of the northwestern Europe continental margin and to the Urals where shallow platformal glaciomarine sediments accumulated.

The lithological and biotic succession across the late Precambrian to early Cambrian interval is outlined for the Dalir and Valiabad successions of the Elburz Mountains of Iran. The Lower Dolomite Member contains an assemblage of phosphatic tubes and other poorly preserved remains. The succeeding Lower Shale Member bears macroscopic chuariamorphid algae. Early skeletal fossil diversity rises through the Middle Dolomite Member, with the successive appearance of Protohertzina anabarica, Cambrotubulus decurvatus and Anabarites trisulcatus, culminating near the top of the dolomites with the appearance of Purella sp., Maikhanella multa, Tiksitheca licis and circothecids. This succession is compared with lower to upper parts of the Nemakit-Daldyn Formation of Siberia. The overlying Upper Shale Member bears phosphatic beds at its base with allathecids and an uncoiled pelagiellid (?Aldanella sp.) that suggest comparison with lower Tommotian strata and the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary phosphorite event of southern and central Asia. A rich assemblage of molluscs appears high in the Upper Shale Member, including the Latouchella korobkovi group and the Pelagiella lorenzi group. The succession is broadly homotaxial with those from the Siberian Platform and Mongolia and those platforms bordering Gondwana (India, Kazakhstan, South China).

Two types of pyrite framboids (PF, probably sulphate-reducing bacteria) have been found within the Zoophycos spreiten, hosted in the Guadalupian (Middle Permian) glaciomarine greywacke of the Westley Park Sandstone Member within the Broughton Formation from the southern Sydney Basin of southeastern Australia. They are composed of non-sheathed (PF1) and sheathed (PF2) sub-micron balls, respectively. Chemically, the sub-micron balls consist of iron, sulphur, carbon and oxygen. Both PF1 and PF2 occur in rhythmic alternation within the thick, light-grey and thin, dark-grey minor lamellae of Zoophycos spreiten. The framboids from the minor lamellae are highly abundant and occur in an orderly arrangement of equal density and in a good state of preservation. Within Zoophycos spreiten no homogeneous filling, fecal pellets, or any sign of re-exploitation of the minor lamellae have been recognized. No similar framboids have been observed outside Zoophycos spreiten. Therefore, the framboids are interpreted as the pyritized remains of microbial colonies within Zoophycos spreiten. The trace Zoophycos would be a multifunctional garden that may have been carefully constructed by the Zoophycos maker, where different microbial colonies were orderly and carefully planted and cultured within different minor lamellae. Further, it is proposed that the Zoophycos maker had a symbiotic relationship with microbial colonies on the mutual basis of food supply and redox conditions. The fact that the overlying spreiten cut the underlying ones indicates that the Zoophycos from the study area is of an upward construction. The rhythmic alternation of both the thick, light-grey and thin, dark-grey minor lamellae within Zoophycos spreiten may be suggestive of a gardening manner of the Zoophycos maker responding to the warm and cold changes, food supply in pulses and variations of sedimentation rate for planting and culturing microbial colonies under the conditions of a glaciomarine environment at the high latitudes.

The Moine Schists of Western Inverness-shire and North-West Argyll show a progressive increase in metamorphism when traced from the outcrop of the Moine Thrust-plane eastwards towards the central area of regional injection and migrnatitization. It is possible to distinguish four zones of progressive metamorphism characterized by the development of distinctive mineral assemblages in the very subordinate, but widely distributed and highly distinctive calc-silicate granulites. The easterly increase in grade is attributed to the thermal effect of the great injection complexes, and it is suggested that the Torridonian, the Tarskavaig Moine Schists, and the Moine Schists proper merely represent successive stages in the regional metamorphism of one formation.

An Ediacaran assemblage dominated by an unidentified species of CyclomedusaSprigg 1947, along with species of Ediacaria?Sprigg 1947, BeltanellaSprigg 1947, HiemaloraFedonkin 1982, and Nimbia?Fedonkin 1980, is described for the first time from the Innerelv Member of the Stappogiedde Formation exposed in coastal outcrops west of Tanafjorden on Digermul Peninsula, in northeastern Finnmark, northern Norway. The fossil assemblage is dominated by discoidal forms which share certain affinities with the cosmopolitan genera. Cyclomedusaand Ediacaria. However, our specimens differ from these and other discoidal Ediacaran fossils in the absence of radial sculpture. This, along with a basically concentric organization, are characteristics shared with Kullingiafrom the Dividal Group of northern Scandinavia, the White Sea, Podolia, and northwestern Canada, along with undescribed discoidal remains from the Charnian Supergroup, Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, England, and the Conception Group, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland.

Our discovery of an Ediacaran-type assemblage within the Middle Innerelv Member provides support for previous suggestions of a late Vendian age for this sequence. This general conclusion is consistent with the occurrence of early Cambrian taxa, including the trace fossil Phycodes, and the problematical forms Vendotaenia and Sabellidites, in basal portions of the Lower Breivik Formation, within the same stratigraphie section. The lowest formally-proposed faunal zone in northern Scandinavia is the Kullingia Zone, based on the occurrence of the fossil medusoid Kullingia concentrica in Member III (Middle Sandstone C) of the Dividal Group, northern Scandinavia. Kullingiais a distinctly chambered form that was probably pelagic. In contrast, Cyclomedusa,and related genera of the so-called Cyclomedusaplexus, comprise an informal grouping of intergrading, probably benthic, taxa that possess radial and/or concentric organization. In light of the intergradational nature of taxa, present difficulties in taxonomic interpretation and correlation, and the abundance of cyclomedusoids in many Ediacaran assemblages, we suggest that the concept of the Kullingia Zone, as originally defined for northern Scandanavia, be broadened to include the common form genera of the Cyclomedusa plexus, inclusive of the occurrences in the Innerelv Member described herein. It is our hope that additional fieldwork will provide a basis for more refined taxonomic evaluations and biozonation.

Many late Mesozoic lamprophyre dykes occur in the Taihang Mountains (north China). These lamprophyres are rich in large ion lithophile elements (e.g. Rb, Sr, Ba and K) and light REE, and have highly differentiated REE patterns. They show large but regular variations in chemical and Nd–Sr isotopic compositions. All these suggest that the lamprophyres were produced from differentiation of a parental magma, coupled with contamination by lower crust. The parental magma was derived from melting of a long-term enriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle source as is indicated by the highly enriched isotopic signatures of the lamprophyres. Mantle enrichment in the area was probably produced by interaction of volatile-rich melts released from the asthenosphere with the above lithosphere in middle Proterozoic times.

In the High Himalayan belt of northwest India, crustal thickening linked to Palaeogene collision between India and Eurasia has led to the formation of two main crystalline tectonic units separated by the syn-metamorphic Miyar Thrust: the High Himalayan Crystallines sensu stricto (HHC) at the bottom, and the Kade Unit at the top. These units are structurally interposed between the underlying Lesser Himalaya and the very low-grade sediments of the Tibetan nappes. They consist of paragneisses, orthogneisses, minor metabasics and, chiefly in the HHC, leucogranites. The HHC registers: a polyphase metamorphism with two main stages designated as M1 and M2; a metamorphic zonation with high-temperature recrystallization and migmatization at middle structural levels and medium-temperature assemblages at upper and lower levels. In contrast, the Kade Unit underwent a low-temperature metamorphism. Rb–Sr and U–Th–Pb isotope data point to derivation of the orthogneisses from early Palaeozoic granitoids, while the leucogranites formed by anatexis of the HHC rocks and were probably emplaced during Miocene time.

Most of the complicated metamorphic setting is related to polyphase tectonic stacking of the HHC with the ‘cooler’ Kade Unit and Lesser Himalaya during the Himalayan history. However, a few inconsistencies exist for a purely Himalayan age of some Ml assemblages of the HHC. As regards the crustal-derived leucogranites, the formation of a first generation mixed with quartzo-feldspathic leucosomes was possibly linked to melt-lubricated shear zones which favoured rapid crustal displacements; at upper levels they intruded during stage M2 and the latest movements along the syn-metamorphic Miyar Thrust, but before juxtaposition of the Tibetan nappes along the late- metamorphic Zanskar Fault.

The city of Naples can be considered part of the Campi Flegrei volcanic field, and deposits within the urban area record many autochthonous pre- to post-caldera eruptions. Age measurements were carried out using 40Ar–39Ar dating techniques on samples from small monogenetic vents and more widely distributed tephra layers. The 40Ar–39Ar ages on feldspar phenocrysts yielded ages of c. 16 ka and 22 ka for events older than the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff caldera-forming eruption (15 ka), and ages of c. 40 ka, 53 ka and 78 ka for events older than the Campanian Ignimbrite caldera-forming eruption (39 ka). The oldest age obtained is 18 ka older than previous dates for pyroclastic deposits cropping out along the northern rim of Campi Flegrei. The results of this study allow us to divide the Campi Flegrei volcanic history into four main, geochronologically distinct eruptive cycles. A new period, the Paleoflegrei, occurred before 74–78 ka and has been proposed to better discriminate the ancient volcanism in the volcanic field. The eruptive history of Campi Flegrei extends possibly further back than this, but the products of previous eruptions are difficult to date owing to the lack of fresh juvenile clasts. These new geochronological data, together with recently published ages related to young volcanic edifices located in the city of Naples (Nisida volcano, 3.9 ka) testify to persistent activity over a period of at least 80 ka, with an average eruption recurrence interval of ~555 years within and adjacent to this densely populated city.

Very large volume (>1000 km3 of magma) crystal-rich dacitic ignimbrites that lack pronounced evidence of fractional crystallization or vertical zonation erupt in some continental magmatic arcs (e.g. the Lund Tuff of the Great Basin and the Fish Canyon Tuff of Colorado in western USA). Apparently, their magma chambers were only modestly heterogeneous and not systematically zoned from top to bottom. These ignimbrites have 40 to 50% phenocrysts set in a high-silica rhyolite glass. Mineral assemblages and mineral compositions suggest pre-eruption temperatures were 730 to 820°C and water and oxygen fugacities were relatively high. We have speculated that these very large volume ignimbrites are unzoned because crystallization and convection in slab-shaped magma chambers inhibited separation of crystals from liquids and resulted in a chamber filled with compositionally heterogeneous magma that lacked systematic chemical zonation or strong fractionation. However, many other very large volume silicic ignimbrites are strongly fractionated and may be vertically zoned (e.g. tuffs related to the Yellowstone hotspot). These rhyolitic tuffs typically have few phenocrysts, anhydrous mineral assemblages, low oxygen fugacities, crystallization temperatures of 830 to 1050°C, and a strong imprint of fractional crystallization. Yet these Yellowstone-type rhyolites are derived from chambers 40 to 70 km across which have sill-like shapes (depth/diameter ratios much less than 1). Thus, factors other than chamber shape must be important for establishing the degree of evolution and nature of zonation in silicic magma chambers. Here, the role of crystallinity-dependent viscosity on the evolution of these two types of contrasting magmas is explored. Calculated magma viscosities for the hot, dry, crystal-poor rhyolites are significantly lower than for the cooler, wetter, crystal-rich dacites. Perhaps these hot rhyolites had low enough crystal contents and viscosities to allow efficient crystal–liquid separation, probably by a combination of unhindered crystal-settling, floor crystallization (including compaction), and crystallization on the walls of large chambers. Clean separation of melt from residual solids at their sources may have been promoted by their high temperatures and low viscosities (<104.5 Pa s). In contrast, monotonous dacitic magmas may never have been crystal-free near-liquidus magmas. Their large magma chambers may have developed by progressive growth at a shallow level with repeated input of intermediate to silicic magma. Crystallization of the water-enriched dacitic magmas occurred at lower temperatures (<800 °C) where crystallinity and hence magma viscosity (>106.5 Pa s) were significantly higher. These characteristics inhibited all forms of crystal–liquid separation, hindered development of systematic vertical zonation, and promoted quasi-equilibrium crystallization in small domains within large heterogeneous magma chambers. Eruptions of these crystal-rich dacites may only occur if the roof fails over a growing magma chamber that is becoming increasingly molten.

Granulites including a charnockite suite, mafic granulites, pelitic granulites, metanorite dykes and their retrograde varieties occur as discontinuous shear zone-bounded bodies within the Archaean basement comprising a granite gneiss–amphibolite–metasedimentary rock association in the central part of the Aravalli Mountains, northwest India. The entire suite, named the Sandmata Complex, preserves a complex history of tectonothermal evolution. Except for their strongly foliated margins, the granulite bodies are largely massive. Partial melting in the ‘country rocks’ led to the development of migmatite gneisses close to the contact of the granulite, a feature not as common in the rocks further away from the granulite contact. Geothermobarometry of massive granulites indicates Tmax>900°C and Pmax∼7.5 kbar. The retrograde granulites, which formed at lower amphibolite/upper greenschist-facies conditions, experienced channelized hydration reactions concomitant with shearing. These rocks locally appear as hornblende–biotite-bearing foliated granulite with or without Cpx or Opx. The rocks seem to have followed an inverse PTt path and have undergone an earlier phase of near-isobaric cooling. Our single zircon Pb–Pb ages indicate that the exhumation of granulites to the shallower amphibolite-facies levels with concomitant melting in the country rocks took place between 1690 Ma and 1621 Ma. Assuming that the granulite-facies metamorphism took place at around 1725 Ma, we relate the entire process of granulite metamorphism and exhumation covering an age range between 1725 and 1621 Ma to the rift basin opening stages of the Delhi Orogenic cycle that culminated at c. 1450 Ma.

A provenance study was conducted on the Mid-Proterozoic Newland Formation, in which petrographical features of sandstones and geochemical characteristics of shales were integrated to arrive at an internally consistent interpretation.

Sandstones of the Newland Formation are typically arkosic sands and arkoses with very-well-rounded quartz and feldspar grains and only minor amounts of extrabasinal rock fragments. The predominant feldspar types are K-spar and microcline, feldspar grains are smaller than quartz grains, and feldspars show little alteration due to weathering. Detrital modes of Newland sandstones (QFL diagrams) indicate that they were derived from a stable cratonic source. These petrographical features imply a source area dominated by granites and granitoid gneisses, semi-arid to arid climate, tectonic quiescence, and overall peneplain conditions.

Shales of the Newland Formation are dominated by illite, quartz silt, and fine crystalline dolomite. They have small La/Th rations, relatively large Hf contents, and small contents of Cr, Co, and Ni, all indicative of derivation from crust of granitic composition. Small Tio2/Al2O3 ratios also suggest source rocks of granitic composition. The average chemical index of alteration (CIA) for Newland shales is 71.8, which in light of the probable granitoid source indicates modest amounts of chemical weathering. Relatively large SiO2 contents and large K2O/Na2O ratios reflect derivation from stable cratonic areas and tectonic quiescence.

Thus, in general, the petrography of sandstones and geochemistry of shales provides the same provenance clues for the Newland Formation. One notable discrepancy between the two approaches is that the sandstones indicate an arid to semi-arid climate with very minor chemical weathering, whereas the CIA of the shales indicates at least modest amounts of chemical weathering. This indicates on one hand the need to better calibrate the CIA with a large variety of muds from modern climatic settings, and on the other hand the possibility that this discrepancy is due to transport segregation.
