In trials conducted over five years, data on pest (insect, disease, bird) attack and yield of sorghum cultivar 65D were accumulated. A modified analytical method of damage assessment is described, which includes consideration of all pest occurrences and different levels and timing of pest attack. There was a positive correlation between crop yield and rainfall. The selective infestation of stronger plants, or the ability of those plants to support pest populations, is shown; thus, in most cases, yield reductions are masked. The importance of the tillering habit of 65D on yield, and its ability to compensate for pest damage by further tillering, are shown. A cultivar which does not normally tiller was tested in the final year. Effects on yield of all the pests encountered in the five years are discussed.

Ninety five cocoa clones were tested in Sabah, Malaysia at planting densities of 1096 and 3333 plants ha−1. Analysis of dry bean yields up to 60 months after planting showed that vigorous clones performed better at the lower planting density, some clones of intermediate vigour performed well at both planting densities and some weak clones performed well at high planting density. The conclusion that optimal planting densities are highly variable has significant implications for procedures in clone selection and suggests that the relation between the yield of a clone and its general combining ability will become clearer once planting density is taken into account.

Bean yield at two sites in Costa Rica was affected by the interactions of maize and bush bean cultivars with cropping system (relay, row intercropping and sole cropping). The maize culti-vars were grouped according to leaf area index (LAI) and plant height. At a site with a severe weed problem, leafy maize of intermediate height allowed the most bean yield in relay but the least in intercropping. Tall, leafy maize allowed as much yield of intercropped beans as short, less leafy cultivars. In intercrops, tall maize plants shaded the beans less, while in relay crops leafy plants of intermediate height shaded and suppressed weed growth so benefiting the following bean crop. At the other site, all maize groups had the same effect on beans whether grown in relay or intercropped. Leafy maize cultivars of medium height are preferable for sole crops and for relay cropping of beans at physiological maturity when weeds are a problem, but less leafy types are better for bean intercropping or for relay crops where the beans are planted before maize maturity. Plant types selected for sole cropping are not necessarily best for poly-cultures and one crop may affect another even when their periods of active growth do not overlap.

Fertilization of rubber plantations has been poorly documented despite the huge economic and ecological impact of this tropical perennial crop, especially in Southeast Asia. The main objective of this paper is to provide information on the fertilization practices of rubber smallholders in Thailand and to investigate the drivers of these practices. Data were sourced from individual interviews conducted with 414 rubber smallholders. The results showed that 99.4% of the mature rubber plantations were fertilized with either chemical or organic fertilizers, or both. The average dose of chemical fertilizers was 105/53/92 kg ha−1 of N/P/K that is consistent with the national recommendations. We estimated that almost two-thirds of the plantations had intensive or very intensive fertilization practices. Geographical location, especially the distinction between historical and new rubber-producing areas, appeared as a major factor explaining differences in fertilization practices. Several drivers commonly found in the literature did not affect the fertilization practices of the rubber farmers, highlighting some specificity of perennial crops and a context where access to fertilizer was not an issue. The high economic and environmental costs of intensive fertilization practices, while their benefit to the yield of rubber plantations continues to be debated, show the need to conduct research on sustainable fertilization practices in rubber smallholdings.

Papaya has never been found in the wild, but is believed to have originated in tropical America from where it has spread throughout the tropics and subtropics. This fruit crop is particularly important in India and Brazil. Most research on the water relations of papaya has been undertaken in Brazil and on the island of Guam (United States of America). Papaya is a short-lived large herb, growing to a height of up to 10 m. Leaves emerge from the upper part of the unbranched stem. After a juvenile period, lasting for about two months, flowers begin to develop in leaf axils. Flowering continues throughout the year as new leaves emerge. The plants, which are dioecious, begin to bear fruit within a year after planting, sustaining high yields for two years before yields decline. The ‘effective’ root depth varies with the method of irrigation, but can reach 0.55 m. The seedlings and the trees are susceptible to wind damage, a topic that has been well researched. Stomata are only found on the abaxial leaf surface. They are sensitive to changes in the saturation deficit of the air. Stomata also respond quickly to changing light conditions. On clear days, midday suppression of photosynthesis occurs as a result of partial closure of the stomata. In the morning, there is a time lag between water loss by transpiration and sap flow, as water is taken from storage in the hollow stem. Few attempts have been made to measure the actual water use of papaya, and there are no reliable published values for the crop coefficient. Limitations to the design of the papaya irrigation experiments reported so far make it difficult to reconcile the results in practical ways. Water productivities equivalent to 1.8 to 2.8 kg (fresh fruit) m−3 (irrigation water) have been obtained. Although papaya is generally considered to be drought sensitive and responsive to irrigation, there is a shortage of good experimental evidence to support this view. There is a need to establish practical irrigation schedules for this remarkable crop. A uniformity of approach to irrigation experimentation and a common, universally agreed nomenclature would facilitate this process.

Agricultural development projects frequently promote new crop production technologies for adoption at scale on the basis of research and pilot studies in a limited number of contexts. The performance of these production technologies is often variable and dependent on context. Using an example from the Agroforestry for Food Security Project in Malawi, that promoted agroforestry technologies for soil fertility enhancement, we explore the nature and implications of variation in performance across farmers. Mean effects of these technologies, measured by differences in maize yield between agroforestry and sole maize plots, were modest but positive. However, there was large variation in those differences, some explained by altitude, plot management and fertilizer use but with much unexplained. This represents risk to farmers. Those communicating with farmers need to be honest and clear about this risk. It can be reduced by explanation in terms of contextual factors. This should be an aim of research that can often be embedded in scaling up the promotion of agronomic innovations.

This review paper deals with some of the general statistical principles of crop rotation experiments. The basic terminology of the subject is defined. Attention is paid to the fundamental design principle that each phase of a rotation should each year be present in an experiment involving that rotation. The inclusion of ‘auxiliary’ treatments - usually fertilizer treatments - is discussed. Consideration is given to matters influencing the choice of size and shape of plots. The statistician's role in planning a rotation experiment is portrayed as onerous. Emphasis is put on the importance of care and good practice in the management of a long-term agricultural experiment. Complications arising in the statistical analysis of data from a rotation trial are sketched.

Methods are described for releasing HCN from cassava leaves and tubers by organic solvents and its spectrophotometric estimation as the red complex formed with alkaline picrate. Chloroform was the most efficient solvent, with toluene an acceptable alternative, using enough solvent to wet samples thoroughly to maximize cyanide yield. Cyanide content was concentrated in the veins and towards the base of leaves and declined linearly with leaf age. Release of HCN with solvent compared favourably with traditional homogenization/steam distillation with leaves and parenchymal tissue, but was unsatisfactory for tuber peel. The effective removal of HCN from cooked cassava leaves depends chiefly on release of enzymes by efficiently chopping them before boiling, which only slowly destroyed potential cyanide content of unchopped leaves.

When the same cultivars of groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea) were grown under a wide range of environmental conditions, temperature and irradiance played a major role in determining crop duration and partitioning of dry matter to pods, the latter assessed by harvest index. Utilizing published data for the Virginia groundnut cultivar Early Bunch under non-limiting conditions, we show that accumulation of thermal time using three cardinal temperatures (Tb=9 °C, To=29 °C and Tm=39 °C) has considerable potential for predicting crop maturity. In sixteen sowings ranging from the wet tropics in Indonesia to the elevated subtropics in Australia, harvest date for Early Bunch corresponded to the accumulation of 1808 (±23) degree-days after sowing. In all sowings except one in the semi-arid tropics, this value of thermal time was within eight calendar days of actual harvest maturity. Harvest index varied greatly with both location and sowing date, ranging from 0.31 (Indonesia) to 0.58 (subtropical Australia). Using total short-wave solar radiation incident during the growing season and calculated values of thermal time, the growing season for each sowing in each location was described in terms of a photo-thermal quotient (PTQ, MJ m−2 degree-day−1). Values for PTQ ranged from 0.99 (Indonesia) to 2.11 (subtropical Australia). Variation in harvest index could be explained largely by a curvilinear function of PTQ (R2=0.98), provided data were not confounded by the effects of photoperiod. In the semi-arid tropical environment, decreases in photoperiod associated with delayed sowing were the dominant factor controlling harvest index.

The effect of mixtures of cultivars on yield and risk distribution in four maize cultivars grown at four different population levels was studied in semi-arid environments in Ethiopia. Mixtures yielded between 2 and 29% more than the pure stands, but late maturing pure stands produced more biomass than mixtures. Mixtures of cultivars with similar flowering periods yielded 60% more than the pure stands in dry growing seasons, but only 30% more when there was more rain. Yield gain was associated mainly with varietal synchrony of anthesis and silking. Mixtures composed of cultivars with different flowering times were less at risk from yield loss in the case of end-of-season drought and yielded 100% more than their late flowering component in pure stand. But in long growing seasons, with an early dry spell, pure stands of the late cultivar outyielded the mixtures whereas pure stands of the early flowering cultivars yielded less than the mixtures, except in years with a serious end-of-season drought. The results indicate that it would be profitable to grow mixtures in semi-arid regions if cultivars with similar height and synchronized flowering time were grown at populations of between 65 000 and 90 000 plants ha−1.

A crop of broad beans was subjected to different water treatments with a view to finding the most economical irrigation policy. Increments in yield were obtained from the sixth to ninth irrigation, but the relative significance of each irrigation after the sixth was dependent upon whether irrigation water was saved during the vegetative and early flowering phase, or during the phase of pod development. The influence of the different water regimes on yield components and on some attributes of growth was studied.

Brassica carinata (an uncultivated species) was compared with other oilseed species already under cultivation in India, on irrigated and rainfed soils. B. carinata yielded very well in a wide range of environments partly because it had a large number of primary and secondary racemes. It also showed better environmental adaptation and substantial resistance to pests and disease.

Three effects of herbaceous weeds on the productivity of a bush fallow system cropped with maize, cassava and plantain were identified in four experiments carried out in Central Amazonian Peru. First, early weed control is needed to minimize crop yield reductions. Weeds reduce plantain raceme weight and days to flowering, but not cassava yield, if weeding is done early. Second, fallows must be long enough to reduce weed seed banks to levels tolerable to farmers. While fallows of between two and five years eliminate herbaceous weed biomass present at the beginning of the fallow, weed seed banks decline linearly through ten years of tree cover. Third, with successive clean-weedings to reduce weed competition, tree and shrub numbers and their proportion of total non-crop biomass decline, while the amount and proportion of herbaceous weeds increase. Tree and shrub regeneration is reduced by longer cropping periods, more frequent weedings, greater crop cover, and shorter fallow periods.

Ranking and scoring exercises are common in participatory research work, for example in determining farmer preferences for crop varieties, tree species or other commodities. However, they rarely involve eliciting opinions of many individual farmers so as to establish the repeatability of study findings. This paper demonstrates ways in which ranking of evaluation criteria can be combined with evaluation scores to produce generalizable results concerning farmers' overall preference for a set of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties. The use of weighted indices is explored. Results were found to be robust across all indices. However, farmer evaluations for yields did not correlate well with actual yields measured on their own plots. Farmers often gave high evaluation scores for yield performance of new bean varieties, even when they yielded quite poorly in plots in their own fields. Reasons for this are discussed.

Preliminary observations on tubers of yam (Dioscorea spp.) showed that there were increases in nematode populations during storage at ambient temperatures, whereas nematode counts were very low after storage at lower temperatures (12–13°C). Hot water treatments (50°C) for different lengths of time reduced the number of nematodes but damaged the tubers. Fumigation with methyl bromide, ethylene dibromide and hydrogen phosphide was not successful, as concentrations which reduced nematode numbers caused injury to the tubers. The effect of ethylene dibromide was not lasting.

Field studies of the dynamics of transformation and availability of applied phosphorus in a Vertisol cropped with rainfed cotton showed that phosphorus application increased available phosphorous in the soil. However, 70–80% of the phosphorus was fixed when more than 40 kg P2O5 ha−1 was applied. Maximum uptake of phosphorus by cotton occurred during the active growth period 40 to 80 days after germination, as reflected in a steep decline in the labile pool of available phosphorus in the soil. Over 50% of the total inorganic phosphorus occurred as Ca-P, which was the major contributor to the labile pool available to the cotton crop. The maximum response of cotton in terms of both dry matter and seed cotton and the maximum uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash occurred when phosphorus was applied at 40 kg P2O5 ha−1. Phosphorus application increased the length, spread, volume and weight of roots.

Experiments were conducted in both the greenhouse and the field on highly weathered (Orthic Ferralsol) soils to evaluate the effect of combining on-farm organic residues (chicken manure, farmyard manure, sugar bagasse) with Minjingu phosphate rock (MPR) on soil pH, extractable (available) and sorbed phosphorus (P), and to assess the cost benefit for maize production. The greenhouse study results indicated that, in the first eight weeks of incubation, soil pH increased linearly with increase in MPR rates and decreased thereafter. The available P also increased linearly. Chicken manure and sugar bagasse were most and least effective respectively in reducing P sorption, while there was a significant negative relationship between P adsorption maxima and extractable P. The field experiment data showed that the available P values increased significantly above the control in all the treatments where MPR and organic materials were applied separately or combined. Treatment effects on Langmuir sorption maxima (Smax) in the field were variable. An increase in Smax with an increase in MPR rates was noted. However, there was a positive relationship between Smax and available P (r = 0.52 to 0.69), suggesting the diversity of factors affecting the complex nature of P dynamics under field conditions. MPR applied alone in the first season gave a significant residual positive effect on maize grain yield for two additional seasons. The economic analysis revealed that a single application of chicken manure (2 t ha−1) combined with MPR at 60 kg P ha−1 gave the highest incremental net benefit equivalent to US$ 657 ha−1 during the three maize cropping seasons.

Earlier work has shown that, in cereals in general, grain yield (Y) and protein content (P) are strongly negatively related. It is shown here that the expected positive expected relationship between grain yield and protein yield also holds, with (YP) given approximately by YP = 0.141 + 0.0969 Y. All cereal breeding in which high protein content is desired therefore faces a compromise with grain yield.

The literature on ‘stability analysis’, which is better called ‘sensitivity analysis’, leaves much to be desired. This paper attempts to clarify the issues, particularly the effect of the non-linearity of the standard model relating variety yields to mean yields over sites. The model is extended from its original applications in the analysis of crop yields to the analysis of measurements that cannot be considered Normally distributed, such as disease assessments expressed as percentages or proportions. Modern computer software offers a method that is theoretically sound and can be applied routinely to data of many different distributional types. Graphical methods of displaying the results of the analysis of non-Normal data are discussed.
