In most cotton-growing regions of West and Central Africa where rainfed conditions prevail, cropping conditions are highly diversified since the crop is planted over an extended period. We studied production and development patterns in 10 cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) varieties to determine the most efficient strategies that could be transformed into breeding traits. Four trials were carried out between 2002 and 2003 in two cotton-growing areas in Benin to compare the 10 varieties at three stand densities and two planting dates. The parameters monitored were the mean first flower opening date (FF), effective flowering time (EFT), plant height at harvest (HH), height to node ratio (HNR), length of fruiting branch (LFB), number of vegetative branches (NVB) and average boll retention at the first position of the fruiting branches (RP1). We identified two ideotypes that yielded better than the others: (i) Mar 88-214 performed well under late planting–high stand density conditions and was characterized by low vegetative growth and early flowering onset, a short flowering period and low RP1; (ii) H 279-1 performed especially well under early planting–low stand density conditions and was characterized by high vegetative growth, late flowering, long EFT and high RP1. We propose a breeding strategy for both ideotypes based on seven indicators with high heritability (FF, HH, HNR, and LFB) or medium heritability (NVB, EFT, and RP1).

Striga hermonthica infestation causes significant losses of maize yield in the Nigerian savannas and several technologies have been developed and promoted to control Striga in maize. However, since no single technology has been found to be effective against Striga, integrated management is needed to achieve satisfactory and sustainable Striga control. Both on-station and on-farm trials were undertaken from 2013 to 2015 in Bauchi and Kano States of Nigeria to evaluate the performance of integrated Striga control technologies. In the on-station trials, a soybean–maize rotation did not suppress Striga in maize in either location. However, nitrogen application suppressed and reduced Striga infection, except in Bauchi in 2014. The soybean–maize rotation accompanied by N application reduced Striga damage in both locations. On farmers’ fields, rotating soybean with maize significantly reduced Striga infection. At the same time, the use of maize varieties with a combined tolerance to drought and resistance to Striga parasitism also increased maize grain yield on farmers’ fields, probably due to three factors: a reduction in Striga infection, reduced effects of a mid-season moisture deficit, and increased uptake of nutrients from the soil. We concluded that the use of Striga-resistant maize varieties in combination with the application of N fertilizer and rotation with soybean could increase the productivity of maize in Striga-infested fields in the Nigerian savannas.

In contrast to earlier results, a clear advantage from mixed cropping of maize and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) was found in the long-rain seasons (March to September) of 1976 and 1977. Pure stand yields were low due to drought in 1976 and excessive rainfall in 1977. These and other results for long-rain seasons in Kenya suggest that mixtures are more efficient where pure stand yield levels are low, but there is little difference between cropping systems where levels are high. Light interception by maize leaves was quite small until late in the life of the bean crop.

The shoots of high, medium and low yielding clones of tapioca were examined to see whether yield was associated with morphological characteristics of the foliage and/or with leaf area development. The lowest yielding variety had the highest leaf area per stem, and vice versa, differences in leaf area being mainly due to differences in leaf size. Leaves of the highest yielding variety possessed attenuated lobes, which tended to have a more vertical mid-day orientation, whereas the lowest yielding variety possessed large broad-lobed leaves with more horizontal orientation. The intermediate variety had acutely attenuated lobes and showed a much more vertical day-time orientation. The relationship between the leaf properties and canopy efficiency is discussed.

Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria grahamiana, Dolichos lablab, Mucuna pruriens, Tephrosia vogellii and Tithonia diversifolia were evaluated as potential species for soil fertility replenishment in on-farm adaptive trials, farm visits and field days in Tororo District, eastern Uganda. Farmers used multiple criteria for assessing and selecting those species that fitted within their production systems and production objectives. Farmers also adapted the technologies to allow for local opportunities and constraints. A preference ranking and logit regression analysis of probabilities of acceptance of the species conducted in 19 farmer groups showed that Mucuna had high, Tithonia and Crotalaria intermediate, and Canavalia, Lablab and Tephrosia low probabilities of being accepted or adopted. The evaluations showed that whilst technologies need to be adapted, a single-use technology had little chance of large-scale adoption. This paper highlights adaptations/innovations by farmers, and opportunities for participatory action research targeting farmers' production objectives.

Changes in growth rate of tea shoots cause yield fluctuations between seasons, but the size of the basal shoot population remains constant throughout the year. The proportion of shoots with dormant apical buds does not influence the mean weight of shoots harvested. Models of shoot extension are discussed.

Chickpea production in marginal (<600 mm annual rainfall) areas of the northern cropping region in eastern Australia is considered to be constrained by low rainfall, soils with low plant available water capacity (PAWC), subsoil salinity, low plant stature and poor fruit set. This study examines these constraints to assess the magnitude of their impact and if agronomic practices can improve potential production. Over three years a total of 42 commercial chickpea crops were monitored following a participatory action research approach focusing on perceived production constraints. Subsoil salinity significantly reduced PAWC for chickpea compared to wheat. However, PAWC for chickpeas from the majority of sites monitored was comparable to other areas. The supply of water between flowering and maturity was significantly related to yield. The agronomic practice of levelling following deep planting improved the lowest pod height by 10 cm and plant stresses experienced during flowering caused a 50 % loss of potential fruit. Constraints impacting on the supply and storage of soil water could be minimized by selecting paddocks with low chloride levels in the upper layers and sowing crops when the available soil water is greater than 100 mm. Reducing fruit loss at flowering has the potential to improve yields significantly. The mechanisms behind this loss were not identified but are worthy of further research.

The low yield of pearl millet largely due to the low adoption of improved varieties substantiates the application of client-oriented plant breeding for pearl millet. Hence to enhance adoption, new varieties must correspond to farmers’ preferences and respond to the constraints prevailing in the production environments, participatory rural appraisals were conducted in two agro-ecological zones (Sahel and North-Sudan) to determine farmers’ preferences in the choice of varieties and to identify constraints to pearl millet production. The study revealed that the major production constraints are hierarchically drought, Striga, head miner, bird and downy mildew. Compact panicle, large grain size and non-bristle panicle were the most preferred traits in pearl millet across agro-ecological zones. Very long panicle and early maturity crop cycle were more preferred in the Sahel zone whereas, in the North-Sudan zone medium panicle length and medium maturity cycle were more preferred by farmers. Traits largely rejected by farmers were small grain size, narrow, loose and bristled panicle. Very few investigations were done to understand the raison of the low adoption of improved technologies in pearl millet. This study identified the major criteria of new pearl millet variety adoption by farmers. It is expected that breeding program must integrate these criteria in new pearl millet variety profiling to enhance adoption.

Simple linear correlations, stepwise multiple regressions and path-coefficient analyses were used to determine the relation between grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.) and weather factors in a three year study involving several planting dates within each year. Maximum and minimum relative humidity, which demonstrated negative relationships with yield, were the most reliable factors, both directly and indirectly, for predicting yield. Temperature (including accumulated heat units), sunshine hours and total and effective rainfall generally showed negligible direct effects on yield. Potential evaporation, which showed positive correlation, had a negative direct influence on grain yield. We conclude that, whenever possible, path analysis should be used as well as correlation and regression analyses in explaining the complex multiple interactions of yield and weather factors in crop production.

Three pearl millet and three cowpea genotypes were examined in intercropping systems on deep sandy soils in Niger between 1984 and 1987. The intercropped pearl millet genotypes usually produced at least 80% of their sole crop yields when the cowpea was planted two or more weeks after the pearl millet. The early maturing and spreading cowpea genotype contributed most to LER. All cowpea genotypes yielded more when planted in association with dwarf rather than the traditional tall pearl millet genotypes because they received more light.

Achieving export growth in rice production from variable rainfed lowland rice ecosystems is at risk if depending on conventional breeding or genetic development alone. Sustained, long-term production requires building adaption capacity of smallholder farmers to better manage the challenges of seasonal climate variability and future climate change. Better understanding of the risks and constraints that farmers face in managing their current cropping system helps develop strategies for improving rice production in Cambodia. System models are now considered valuable assessment tools for evaluating cropping systems performance worldwide but require validation at the local level. This paper presents an evaluation of the APSIM-Oryza model for 15 Cambodian rice varieties under recommended practice. Data from a field experiment in 2011, conducted in a non-limiting water and nutrient environment, are used to calibrate varietal-specific coefficients and model input parameters. An independent dataset is then used to validate the model performance for a ‘real-world’ situation using on-farm data for six rice varieties planted in 54 farmer fields on 32 farms in two villages of Southeastern Cambodia. From this analysis, the APSIM-Oryza model is shown to be an acceptable tool for exploring the mismatch between current on-farm yields and potential production through yield gap analysis and the exploration of cropping system options for smallholder farmers to increase production, adapt to seasonal climate variability and be prepared for potential climate changes.

The percentage dry matter of some Nigerian vegetables increases with age. Corchorus olibrius gave the highest yield of vitamin C after five weeks, but the stage of maturity had less effect with other vegetables. The oxalic acid content of Celosea argentea was very high, approaching a lethal level. It appears that some of the vegetables are best at about six weeks from sowing from the standpoint of eating quality, oxalic acid and vitamin C content.

Three varieties in one cassava trial and five in another were planted in a systematic density experiment which showed that optimum plant density for root yield changes with plant age. Some varieties showed a pronounced optimum plant population, whilst others showed a flattopped response curve. Reduction in yield above the optimum is due to a reduced harvest index. Yields of over 50 t–ha were obtained with varieties that respond to close spacing.

The development of two simple techniques, box storage and field clamps, which allow curing and storage of fresh cassava roots for 1 and 2 month periods, is described. Consistent and acceptable results have been obtained following storage of roots in boxes packed in moist but not wet sawdust and kept at ambient temperatures. The design of field clamps that maintain internal temperature below 40°C, to allow successful curing and storage, varies in different seasons. Storage life of roots is enhanced by the selection of roots in good condition, and any delay in placing the roots in storage results in poorer out-turns.

A series of 17 crop-loss assessments was made under simulated farmers' field conditions in the three main rice cropping seasons of Bangladesh. The main insect pests were the rice stem borers (Tryporyza incertulas, Chilo polychrysa, Sesamia inferens) and in the monsoon rice gall midge (Pachydiplosis oryzae). Disease incidence was negligible. In the winter and early monsoon yield losses averaged 4 and 6% respectively, but economic benefit was only derived from insecticide application in the monsoon season, when there was an average yield loss of 16%. An economic threshold of 5–10% damaged tillers (‘deadhearts’ and ‘onion shoots’) was indicated for early attacks of stem borers and gall midge. Possible reasons are given for the usually low incidence of insect pests and diseases in Bangladesh rice.

Yields of sugar cane in low-silicon soils were significantly increased by the application of both calcium silicate and coral sand. Over and above the significant response to Ca and increase in soil pH, there was a highly significant response to Si. The overall response to the higher level of calcium silicate application (14·2 tons/ha.) over the control was 28·3 tons of cane per hectare. Neither calcium silicate nor coral sand influenced the sucrose content of the juice.

Salicylic acid (SA) can induce multiple stress tolerance in plants. This study investigated the relationship between SA and antioxidant enzyme activities in maize seedlings under chilling stress. Changes of endogenous SA, antioxidant enzyme activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations were assessed in two different chilling-tolerant maize inbred lines (Huang C and Mo17) under chilling stress. The results showed that both endogenous free and bound salicylic acid contents increased in roots and leaves of both lines. MDA concentrations also increased significantly in roots and leaves of both lines after chilling stress. In addition, in Huang C, chilling stress increased the activities of four antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and peroxidase, while in Mo17, only CAT and APX increased. Furthermore, a regression analysis was conducted between SA and MDA concentrations or antioxidant enzyme activities under chilling stress. The results indicated that MDA concentrations were positively correlated with total SA contents in roots (r = 0.9776, p = 0.0224) and bound SA in leaves (r = 0.9974, p = 0.0458), respectively. Total SA contents had positive correlations with APX activities both in roots (r = 0.9993, p = 0.002) and leaves (r = 0.9630, p = 0.037) and GR in leaves (r = 0.9298, p = 0.0221). Together, these results suggested that chilling stress improved the biosynthesis of endogenous SA, and lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities could be indicated by endogenous SA contents of maize seedlings under chilling stress. Furthermore, increased activities of antioxidant enzymes, especially in roots, may contribute to the chilling tolerance of maize seedlings.

Land and crop management practices were studied to determine yield stability and feasible measures to improve productivity of dry-seeded rice. Variability of yields among farms that had grown dry-seeded rice on the entire farm every season during the period 1991–95 was lower than among farms that had consistently grown transplanted rice during the same period. Weed control is a major challenge for dry-seeded rice and almost all farmers used herbicides to control weeds. Farmers who grew a non-rice crop before the rice season had better weed control than those who did not. Ploughing intensity and the type of implement used for land preparation were not significant factors for weed control. Field bund management was one determinant of productivity differences among farmers. The use of cross-bunds or periphery- and cross-bunds improved the efficiency of rainwater conservation and input use, and increased yields. Fields with higher levelling precision had lower water stress and produced better yields. On average, a farmer lost 0.93 t ha−1 yield due to land-levelling deficiency. The division of large and medium farms into a number of smaller plots improved levelling precision and water control, resulting in higher yields.

It is generally accepted that the two forms of Passiflora edulis, the golden and the purple, originated on the edges of tropical rainforests in Brazil. Extensive hybridisation has since taken place between these two forms and their hybrids. The passion fruit (a vine) is now grown throughout the tropics and subtropics. A limited amount of basic, fundamental research has been published on the water relations of passion fruit. Leaf production and expansion are both sensitive to water deficits, while water stress reduces leaf and floral bud initiation. A single axillary flower bud forms at each leaf node of new growth along with a tendril. Flower bud development and fruit set are less sensitive to water stress than leaf initiation. Heavy rain during pollination prevents fertilization. Unevenness in crop distribution during the year is possibly linked to water stress and temperature variation. Potential evapotranspiration rates in Brazil varied between 3.5 mm d−1 and 5.8 mm d−1. The value for the crop coefficient increases from about 0.6 during apical vegetative growth up to about 1.25 during flowering and fruiting. Water productivities still need to be determined. Micro-sprinklers and drip are the most effective ways of applying irrigation water with precision to passion fruit. Opportunities exist for international cooperation in research projects of mutual interest on passion fruit water relations.

In Mozambique, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is grown in the dry season in areas with a high water table, or as an irrigated crop. It is also grown in the rainy season when short-term droughts can occur. This paper reports the results of experiments designed to evaluate the effects of water availability and vine-harvesting practices on actual crop water use (cv. TIS 2534), during two contrasting seasons in the south of the country. Rain-fed crops extracted water to soil depths (variable sandy loam) of 0.75 m, with most (90%) taken from the top 0.25 m. Well-irrigated crops apparently obtained some (10%) water from below 0.75 m, but most (75%) came from the upper 0.25 m. Total water use from well-watered crops was about 800 mm during the rains, and 550 mm during the dry season. The corresponding values for rain-fed crops were 360 and 180 mm respectively. Peak rates of water use averaged 8 mm d−1 in the rainy season, and 5–6 mm d−1 in the dry season. Water use was not modified by the frequency of vine harvests. Actual rates of evapotranspiration fell below maximum values when the soil water deficit exceeded only 20 mm. By comparison, the maximum depth of extractable water in the root zone was 80–90 mm. The crop coefficients (Kc) for each stage of growth were consistent over both seasons and estimated to be: 0.55–0.7 (crop establishment), 1.1–1.2 (mid-season), and 0.8 (end-season).
