This paper offers guidelines for the presentation of statistical material in scientific journals and project reports. Emphasis is given to the importance of planning a study so that the various components of statistical material can be linked to ensure the full efficiency of the work; if this is done well, the presentation of the results of the study, including the statistical components, can be achieved with greater ease.

In sub-tropical India where 70% of the country's sugarcane is grown, companion cropping of wheat in autumn-planted sugarcane is beneficial. However, because the yield of sugarcane is reduced, farmers there are reluctant to adopt this cropping system in spite of the greater monetary gains compared with wheat-sugarcane sequential cropping. Application of 200 kg nitrogen ha−1 to sugarcane in two doses, two-thirds immediately after the wheat harvest and the remainder a month later, combined with irrigation at 75% available soil moisture during the summer months (April–June), produced cane yields similar to those from sole autumn-planted sugarcane, with an additional 4.8 t ha−1 of wheat.

Pods of bhindi (Abelmoschus esculentus) developed most rapidly for the first 11 days after the opening of bhindi flowers, after which development slowed down. Seeds matured in about 21 days after flower opening and attained up to 97 per cent germinability. Water potentials lower than −500 joules/kg. in the germination medium adversely affected germination of bhindi seeds. Seeds up to two years old but of > 1 density (i.e. those which sink in water) germinated better than lighter seeds which float.

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea Gaud.), which can provide fodder in addition to bast fibre, was supplied with nitrogen in three different forms: as neem cake coated urea (NCU), lac coated urea (LCU) and standard urea, at rates of 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 kg N ha−1 annually in four equal applications. The ramie was cut four times a year for two years. NCU increased fresh weight, leaf dry matter yield and leaf protein at almost every cutting compared with the other forms of nitrogen, and there was an indication of increased residual nitrogen in the soil. Leaf dry matter and protein content increased with increasing levels of nitrogen up to 180 kg ha−1. It is suggested that coating urea with neem cake makes it a better source of nitrogen for ramie leaf production.

Low-cost methods for enhancement of seed longevity may facilitate biodiversity conservation especially in resource constrained situations. Longevity of 13 cucurbitaceous seed lots belonging to 12 species with mean moisture contents 9.3±0.7% was studied in hermetic storage (HS) and in a liquid consisting of 20% (w/w) CaCl2 in glycerol, following seed to preservative ratio of 1:1 (v/v), at ambient temperature for 24 years. The liquid preservative (LP) was not absorbed by the seeds over the storage period and was harmless to them, drying seeds to about 5% of moisture and maintaining them at this state throughout the storage period. The seeds lost viability in HS in 3.8±0.4 years, while in LP viability was lost in 14–16 years in eight species and the seeds were still viable in five species after 24 years. LP-preserved seeds and also fresh seeds of three species were planted under field conditions. The results validated the use of LP in seed storage for 24 years. The liquid preservation extended longevity of the cucurbit seeds at ambient temperature by drying them and probably maintaining them in oxygen-free environment.

To evaluate the effects of defoliation on green forage performance and grain yield (GY) variation in barley, five barley genotypes were imposed on three levels of defoliation treatments over two consecutive growing seasons in this study. The results indicated that green forage yields were significantly improved by repeated defoliation. The traits of green forage quality, including the ratio of dry weight to fresh weight, crude ash and calcium content were improved, while crude protein and crude fat were reduced, and crude fiber and phosphorus contents appeared not to be influenced by repeated defoliation. Plant height (PH), GY and other yield components, grain number per spike and thousand kernel weight, were significantly reduced by defoliation over the two growing seasons, while internode length below spike was less affected. Reduction in spike length and the number of spikes per plant were identified in only one year. Correlation analysis revealed that only PH exhibited a positive correlation with GY. Effects of genotype, interaction between genotype and defoliation, and environments on changes of forage yield and quality and GY were also discussed. Our current work provides a feasible approach to select elite barley cultivars with optimal defoliation treatments for both forage and grain uses in barley breeding programme.

A study was made of the effect of micronutrients such as boron, copper, zinc, manganese and iron, applied as foliar spray or directly to peat soil, on growth and yields of pepper under greenhouse and field conditions. Combinations of micronutrients were applied in two forms, as salts or as chelates. Results showed positive effects on yield and quality of red pepper, and soil chemical tests substantiated the results.

The yield data from a series of fire-cured variety × fertilizer trials in Malawi are presented. Variety was not important in determining total yields though it was in influencing the distribution of grades. Fertilizer had a large effect upon yields, particularly upon the Cutter and Leaf grades, but environment had by far the greatest influence. High levels of applied fertilizer could not be relied upon to replenish a depleted soil so that it produced yields comparable to those from a soil with well-maintained fertility. Application of fertilizer produced a beneficial change in the grade distribution within the crop.

The results are reported of three field experiments conducted from 1955 to 1963 to investigate the effects of sunn green manuring in the sugar cane rotation. In a three-year rotation with sugar cane and wheat, green manuring twice was not superior to green manuring once, either in terms of sugar cane yield or the nitrogen and organic carbon status of the soil. Two experiments showed that the yield increase of cane was proportional to the weight of the green manure crop, irrespective of how the latter was disposed of, suggesting that the only factor with which yield increase was correlated was the weight of roots of sunn which were incorporated into the soil. The green manure effect is resolved into two components namely ‘green matter effect’ and ‘legume effect’, both of which are additive and nearly equal.

In order to identify the effect of burrowing nematodes on the shoots (pseudostem and leaves) of banana plants and to determine whether or not shoot characteristics are associated with plant resistance to nematodes two experiments were conducted in controlled conditions within polytunnels. The banana plants were harvested on three occasions for the measurement of root morphology and biomass. Varieties differed in their resistance to nematodes from resistant (Yg Km5, FHIA 17, FHIA 03) and partly resistant (FHIA 01, FHIA 25) to not resistant (FHIA 23, Williams). Nematodes reduced total plant dry weight at the first harvest in Experiment 1 and by an average of 8.8% in Experiment 2, but did not affect leaf area in either experiment. The ratio of above-ground weight to total plant weight was reduced from 75% to 72% in nematode-infected plants compared with the control plants for all varieties tested in Experiment 1, but was only reduced in FHIA 25 and FHIA 23 in Experiment 2. Varieties differed in above-ground growth. The FHIA varieties had greater shoot weights and leaf area than YgKm5 and Williams. Overall, resistance to nematodes was associated with the partitioning of a greater proportion of biomass to the roots than to above-ground parts

When agricultural experimenters send data to a statistics unit for analysis, they do not usually include a field plan of the experimental site unless specially requested to do so. But such a plan can be a great help to a biometrician: he can use it to check that the design used in the field was correctly described, and to arrange the plot residuals in the field layout as a way of detecting a fertility trend in the site and of relating anomalous values to particular locations on the ground. This paper gives examples of how a field plan can be used to the benefit of the experimenter.
