Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) may be a life-threatening neurologic crisis primarily emerging as an idiosyncratic reaction to antipsychotic agent use, and characterized by a particular clinical syndrome of mental status alter, rigidity, fever and dysautonomia. Mortality results straightforwardly from the dysautonomic manifestations of the disease and from systemic complications.

To describe an unusual clinical case in order to determine the management regarding medication and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and provide an overview of NMS for the general practitioner with the most up-to-date information on etiology, workup, and management.

We report a case involving a 55-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia disorder who presented with hyperthermia, hemodynamic instability, miosis, muscular rigidity, urinary incontinence, catatonic signs and mutism after combining several antipsychotics at the same time: long-acting injectable form of paliperidone, aripiprazol and haloperidol.

Guidelines for specific medical treatments in NMS are based upon case reports and clinical experience. Generally used agents are dantrolene, bromocriptine, and amantadine. A conceivable approach is to start with benzodiazepines along with dantrolene in moderate or severe cases, followed by the addition of bromocriptine or amantadine. ECT is generally reserved for patients not responding to other treatments.

NMS is an uncommon adverse drug reaction, with a multifactor pathophysiology and manifestation. Early diagnosis and interruption of antipsychotic therapy is the first-line treatment, followed by supportive care and pharmacotherapy. ECT is an effective treatment when supportive treatment together with pharmacotherapy fails. It could be considered first line in severe life-threatening situations. It is advisable to consider maintenance ECT due to the high risk of relapse.

Pregnancy has sociocultural implications that lead to conceiving it depending on the cultural context (Noguera & Rodríguez, 2008). Self-care is a cultural practice associated with the well-being of mother and child during pregnancy (Carmona, Hurtado and Marín 2007). Being relative to culture, self-care varies according to current beliefs. Beliefs are the concretion of a way of thinking about the environment that surrounds us (Peirce, 1903).

Analyze the beliefs of women from a population group in Montería, about pregnancy and its implications regarding self-care in eating.

Qualitative approach. Sources: primary. Sample: due to saturation, 15 pregnant women assigned to the Mocarí neighborhood hospital in Montería. Instrument: semi-structured open interview. The information was processed through AtlasTi, implementing content analysis. Emerging categories: contents, routines in food.

Main belief: food affects the well-being of mother and child. It is adequate or inappropriate depending on categories such as content and routines. The former refer to the food consumed, the latter indicate the times of consumption.

Beliefs about pregnancy operate as generators of mental habits, projected wishes and concrete actions. Therefore, they are an important starting point for the implementation of self-care practices at the institutional level.

Non-suicidal self-harm (NSSH) include deliberate behaviours with the intent to self-injure. NSSH prevalence ranges 15.5%-31.3% in adolescents and young adults<25 years-old.

Our aim is characterizing the psychopathological domains occurring in adolescent and young adults with NSSH during the second COVID-19-related wave (October 2020-August 2021).

A cross-sectional study recruited inpatients aged 15-24 consecutively afferent to psychiatric ward due to NSSH, by investigating anger rumination(ARS), emotional regulation (DERS), dissociation (DES-II), metacognitive capabilities(MCQ-30), perceived stress (PSS), self-criticism (LOSCS), emotional intelligence (Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test-RMET), aggressiveness (AQ), impulsiveness (BIS-11), hopelessness(BHS), alexithymia (TAS-20). NSSH were characterized by using suicide score scale(SSS) and deliberate self-harm interview (DSHI).

A 7-fold increase in young inpatient access was observed from 2019 to 2021. DSHI median was 2 (95%CI=1,17-2,73), SSS-12months median was 5 (95%CI=4.2-6.7), SSS-lifetime median was 5 (95%CI=3.4-5.3) and MINI median was 5 (95%CI=3.4-4.7). Linear regression analysis and Pearson’s correlations revealed strong correlations between DSHI and BHS (r=0.550), TAS-20 (r=0.495), AQ-hostility(r=0.529),AQ-total (r=0.446), PSS(r=0.454), DERS-total (r=0.621), DERS-lack_of_control (r=0.658),MCQ-total(r=0.534),MCQ-perception_danger_not_control (r=0.583); between SSS-12months and AQ-total (r=0.456), AQ-Anger (r=0.443), BIS-total(r=0.457),BIS-Attentional-Impulsiveness (r=0.511),BIS-Complex-Motor-Impulsiveness (r=0.507), PSS (r=0.617), DERS(r=0.571), DES(r=0.559).

COVID-19-related increased perceived stress and depressive symptomatology may have facilitated the onset of severe NSSH in adolescents and young people with trait impulsiveness, hostility and affective dysregulation.

Co-morbid psychiatric disorders are common in Down syndrome (DS). Evidence is limited for pharmacotherapy, specifically antipsychotics, for psychiatric co-morbidity in DS.

To describe a case of a patient with DS who developed a first-episode psychosis (FEP) and who responded to lurasidone in monotherapy and to review recent literature on the treatment of psychosis in patients with DS.

(1) Case report: FEP in DS patient treated with lurasidone 37 mg/day. (2) Narrative review on the treatment of psychosis in DS patients through PubMed database (1990-2020). Key terms: “psychosis”, “Down Syndrome”, “pharmacological treatment”, “antipsychotic drugs”.

A 21-year-old woman with DS, without psychiatric history, presenting with behavioural anomalies, aggressiveness, soliloquies, and unmotivated laughs was referred to our outpatient clinic by her general practitioner. Symptoms began one year prior and progressively worsened, impairing her daily functionality. Previous blood workup was normal. She was diagnosed with FEP and began treatment with lurasidone 37 mg. At 4-week follow-up, she showed total remission of the psychotic symptoms, had no tolerability complaints, and returned to baseline functionality levels. Discussion: No reports of lurasidone use in psychosis in DS have been published. To treat psychotic symptoms in DS, most literature reports describe the use of typical antipsychotics, which are usually effective, but often poorly tolerated; atypical antipsychotics such as risperidone and aripiprazole have also been used.

Lurasidone may be a useful option in patients with FEP in DS. Further research is warranted on treatment of psychosis in this population.

Migration is a difficult and painful process for individuals, since they could no longer rely on the supportive structures of their own country that would help them develop resilience and mental well-being, on the one hand and, on the other hand, they may be obliged to find a new identity and adapt to a new social context.

To identify mental health issues in migrants in Greece.

A literature review has been made through PubMed database.

First-generation immigrants exhibited an increased risk of poor mental health including increased levels of depression, post-traumatic disorder and anxiety compared to local population. When immigrants come to a new country, they often experience culture shock, significantly influencing their mental health. The term “culture shock” describes feelings of weakness and a state of disorientation of individuals living in a new environment as well as the difficulties they face in the process of their adapting to the new conditions. Individuals lack a social supportive environment while experiencing lack of acceptance, as well as social discrimination, economic exploitation and racism by local society. Additionally, their cultural background can influence and differentiate the way they perceive, react and cope stressful conditions.

For the smooth completion of the cultural process, mutual adaption to the new conditions of both migrants and host society is needed, focusing on the understanding of different cultural heritage, as well as on the respect and recognition of rights of both sides.

There is increased migration of patients and physicians worldwide. In Norway, psychiatry is the medical discipline with highest proportion of foreign doctors (24%). We need empirical studies on transcultural clinical challenges among doctors training in psychiatry.

What perceived clinical challenges do foreign and native Norwegian young doctors meet when they treat patients from another culture, and what independent factors are associated with such challenges?

We developed a new 6-item instrument (alpha=0.80), Clinical Transcultural Challenges (CTC), with items about assessing psychosis, risk of suicide, violence etc. The doctors were recruited at mandatory training courses, and they filled in questionnaires about individual factors (age, gender, foreign/native) and work-related factors (training stage, frequency of transcultural meetings, number of working hours, work stress). Associations with CTC were analyzed by linear multiple regression.

The response rate was 93% (216/233), of whom 83% were native and 17% were foreign doctors, 68% were women. Native doctors reported higher levels of CTC than did foreign doctors, 28.8 (6.2) vs 23.8 (7.2), p<0.001, d=0.73. Both native and foreign doctors rated “assessing psychosis” and “lack of helping tools” as most demanding. Independent factors associated with CTC were being a native doctor, Beta 3.9, p<0.01, and high levels of work-home stress, Beta 0.29, p<0.05.

Native doctors training in psychiatry report higher levels of transcultural clinical challenges than foreign doctors do. Both groups of doctors may need more training in transcultural assessment of psychotic disorders. They also report needs for more helping tools, and we should explore this further.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent clinical condition with a leading cause of disability worldwide. The currently available therapeutic agents have important limitations regarding side effects, partial or non-responsiveness. Patients are considered to have treatment-resistant depression (TRD) if there is no effect or minimal effectiveness after receiving adequate dose-duration use of antidepressants from two different categories. For this patients, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can be a treatment option and new therapies appear to tackle TRD like ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic and analgesic.

The authors elaborate a narrative literature review to understand if ketamine might enhance the antidepressant efficacy of ECT.

PubMed database searched using the terms “Electroconvulsive therapy”, “ketamine” and “treatment-resistant depression”.

ECT is currently recommended as an end-line therapy for TRD. Memory impairment after ECT could be a consequence of indiscriminate activation or saturation of glutamate receptors during the treatment, disrupting hippocampal plasticity involved in memory. Ketamine inhibits N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, while stimulating glutamate release and was proposed as an ECT adjuvant, might reduce cognitive adverse effects, time until response/ remission and inclusively improve response rates to ECT.

However, response and remission rates of ketamine in ECT showed no significant difference from the comparator groups and was associated with higher rates of psychiatric and cardiovascular adverse events.

The results did not support the use the combination of ketamine and propofol as anesthetic agents for ECT in patients with MDD. However, further studies are needed to investigate the beneficial clinical and cognitive effects of ketamine alone in ECT settings.

Sexual dysfunction (SD) can often be a side-effect of treatment with antipsychotics (APS). It often jeopardizes long-term adherence to treatment, while deeply affecting the patient’s quality of life. The pathogenic mechanisms may be associated with postsynaptic dopamine antagonism, a1-antagonism and prolactin elevation. APS-induced hyperprolactinemia has been linked to the occurrence of galactorrhea, gynecomastia, amenorrhea and SD.

To synthesize the available evidence on the management of APS-related sexual dysfunction, with a main focus on the second-generation antipsychotics.

A search for randomized controlled trials (RCT) published between 2021 and 2011 on PubMed was made using the keywords “sexual”; “dysfunction”; “antipsychotic” and “treatment”, from which resulted sixteen articles. Only six of those were considered relevant for the study’s objectives.

Three studies focused on the comparison between different APS and prolactin levels and SD occurrence, showing that treatment with aripiprazole is mostly related to prolactin levels with the normal range and a lower incidence of sexual dysfunction. Addition of aripiprazole to previous APS may be associated with normalization of sexual function and pose as a possible management option. Adjunctive treatment with tadalafil showed no significant effect on its primary outcome.

There seems to be a general consensus that patients treated with first-generation antipsychotics (FGA), along with risperidone, paliperidone and amissulpride show higher prolactin levels and incidence of SD. Whether there is a causal relationship between these two variables still remains a question. Larger and more prolonged trials are still needed to evaluate APS-related sexual dysfunction and its management.

Anxiety has become a topical issue since the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, especially for frontline healthcare professionals as they deal with patients affected by the Covid-19.

Objectify anxiety in frontline medical and paramedical staff and study its associated factors.

We conducted a national descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study via a survey over a 2-month period from September to October 2020. We used “Beck Anxiety Inventory” to screen anxiety as well as “Brief Cope Scale” to detect probable correlations between anxiety and coping mechanisms.

We collected 78 persons. The mean age was 29.86 years. 35.9% moved out of home. 39.7% worked in Covid units. 7.7% had personal psychiatric history. 76.9% provided direct care to patients with Coronavirus. The frontline staff reported that only 29.5% of patients were stables. Only 48.4% received adequate training of protection against Covid-19. 64.1% of professionals did PCR test and only 16.7% of them tested positive. We objectified an increase of 6.4% in the anxiolytics use. Stigma affected 57.7% of professionals. We highlighted a link between anxiety and social support strategy (p=0.048). 92.3 % of the staff suffered from anxiety according to Beck Anxiety Inventory.

Screening anxiety among frontline medical and paramedical staff might enhance their productivty and thus provide patients with the best care.

Oxytocin is considered as potential treatment targeting social dysfunctions in psychoses. However, results of clinical trials are inconsistent which may be due to genetic variation in the oxytocin system involved in social information processing.

To examine the effect of the OXTR polymorphism and its interaction with childhood adversity (CA) on facial affect recognition (FAR) in psychotic patients.

Patients with schizophrenic and affective psychotic disorders (n=934) completed a task that required labeling six basic and three social emotions. The polymorphisms rs53576 and rs7632287 within the OXTR locus were genotyped and dichotomized based on prior research. For 65% of the sample, information on CA defined as parental alcoholism or psychiatric illness was collected. The polymorphisms’ role in FAR was assessed using ANCOVAs adjusted for sex, age, and diagnosis.

After Bonferroni correction, there was a significant effect of rs53576, mainly driven by the difference between genotypes in the affective patients. GG-homozygotes recognized emotions better than A-allele carriers. A nominally significant effect in the expected direction was also found for rs7632287. CA influenced FAR but did not interact with any genotype.

The results provide further evidence that OXTR impacts social cognition and behavior in diverse cohorts, including psychotic patients, with rs53576 GG-homozygotes having enhanced social competencies. However, we have failed to confirm that OXTR modulates the relations between CA and FAR in psychosis. The difference in FAR between genotypes was more pronounced in affective patients, which might be due to more severe FAR deficits in schizophrenia.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder, affecting about 20% of people worldwide. This complex and multifaceted disorder has been proposed as a system disease involving not only individual systems including the nervous, endocrine, imune, digestive, microbiota and the environment but also the interactions of these systems. The aetiology of IBS is complex and incompletely understood and this disease are frequently associated with a comorbid psychiatric disease. Current treatment is symptom-directed, rather than based on underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

The authors elaborate a narrative literature review to identify the pathophysiology and therapeutic approach of IBS.

Pubmed databased searched using the therms “psychiatry”, “irritable bowel syndrome” and “treatment”.

The IBS is the most common and best described of the functional bowel disorders, which represents a considerable therapeutic challenge. Studies looked at the efficacy of fibre, antispasmodics and peppermint oil in the treatment of IBS found moderately effectiveness in the treatment of global symptoms. Elimination diets are helpful in improving IBS. There is evidence that a low-FODMAP diet can have a favorable impact on IBS symptoms, especially abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea with improved irritable bowel syndrome symptoms and quality of life. Among the currently available classes of drugs for the treatment of IBS, antidepressants such as selective serotonin releasing inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants are useful because of their analgesic properties, independent of their mood-improving effects.

Evidence suggest that antidepressants might be useful for treatment symptom of IBS however further investigation is required.

Background: Mental resilience refers to the capacity to overcome the negative effects of setbacks and associated stress on performance. In the face of stressors, lack of mental resilience may even cause psychopathology, such as depression. While all combatants are exposed to stressors, female combatants face additional challenges compared with their male counterparts. Resilience is often measured using retrospective self-reports, which do not consider ecological fluctuations across situations and environments. A mobile ecological momentary monitoring allowed us to study gender differences in factors contributing to resilience.

Objective: We aimed to characterize gender differences in resilience trajectory in combatants using ecological momentary assessments (EMA).

Methods: 156 Combatants (98F, 58M) completed mood EMA daily for two weeks using a mobile app. In addition, resilience, QOL and mental health questionnaires were administered three times in four weeks. Stepwise regression models were used to predict resilience after 2-4 weeks.

Results: Female combatants reported higher levels of anxiety and lower resilience, self efficacy and QOL, as well as higher mood variability over time (t(149)=4.9, p<.0001). In addition, while for females, baseline anxiety, self-efficacy and mood EMA all contributed to resilience prediction (37% of variance explained), baseline anxiety was the sole predictor for males (explaining 28% of variance).

Conclusion: Gender differences in resilience were found in combatants who participate in the same occupation. These results emphasize the importance of considering the inclusion smartphone-delivered EMA tools in QOL models.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood with significant impairment in overall functioning and associated psychiatric comorbidities. Knowledge of determinants is vital for the development of effective preventive strategies and tailor made interventions.

The study was aimed at determining risk factors for the development of ADHD among primary school children (PSC)) in state schools in Colombo district of Sri Lanka.

An unmatched case control study was conducted consisting of 73 cases (with ADHD) and 264 controls (without ADHD) selected randomly among 6-10 year old PSC from Sinhala medium state schools in Colombo district. Primary Care Givers completed the validated Sinhala version of Swanson, Nolan, Pelham –IV (SNAP-IV-S) scale for the assessment of ADHD and an interviewer administered questionnaire on risk factors. Children’s diagnostic status was confirmed by a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist following a clinical assessment. Bivariate analysis followed by multivariate regression model identified potential risk factors.

Multivariate analysis revealed, male sex (aOR=3.74; 95%CI=1.67-8.35), lower educational level of the mother (aOR=3.31; 95%CI=1.39-7.98), maternal psycho pathology (aOR=7.28; 95%CI=1.55-34.35), prenatal exposure to passive tobacco smoke (aOR=3.76; 95%CI=1.09-12.95), Birth weight <2500g and /or gestation period of <37 completed weeks (aOR=3.6; 95%CI= 1.48-8.74), neonatal complications (aOR=4.03; 95%CI=1.94-8.32) , minimal leisure time with family (aOR=2.39; 95%CI=1.19-4.82) and subjected to teasing/ bullying (aOR=5.03; 95%CI=2.47-10.25) as significant predictors of ADHD.

Primary prevention focusing on strengthening neonatal, maternal and child health services needs highlighting together with special emphasis on the need for anti-bullying policies in state schools.

The low prevalence of some genetic neuro-developmental syndromes associated to psychiatric disorders requests to be integrated in human genome-phenome databases from which pleiotropy can be compiled from by systematic integration of phenotypes associated with genetic loci using phenomic inference tools. Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder related to elastin gene at 7q11.23. Anxiety, depression and attention problems are the main behavioral problems found in WBS with no gender differences. Significant differences between cohorts are reported in particular regarding somatic complaints and aggressive behavior.

Here, we report a Tunisian cohort of WBS patients for whom clinical behavioral phenotypes as well as genetic features are detailed.

Sixteen patients from Sfax, Tunisia were referred for genetic assessment due to a suspected WBS syndrome.

Genetic evaluation using fluorescent in situ hybridization confirmed 7q11.23 microdeletion in only eight patients. Comparison of detailed behavioral phenotypes revealed differences between age groups, gender groups and genetic groups. Anxiety and depression were recorded in the two older male patients and aggressive behavior was recorded in only two boys. The severity of behavioral features were dependent to familial environment and to parental socio-economic and educational levels.

A more complete understanding of phenomic space is critical for elucidating genome-phenome relationships mediating neurodevelopmental disorder associated to psychiatric diseases for assessing and managing psychiatric and behavioral risks in young syndromic children.

Suicide is a dramatic suicidality complication and a significant worldwild public health problem. Sixty percent of suicidal deaths are preceded by at least one suicide attempt.

to search and estimate the factors predicting a suicidal recidivism

We conducted a retrospective descriptive survey, achieved in psychiatric departement A of Razi hospital on 60 patients hospitalized during a period of 10 years (from January 2010 to December 2019) and have committed at least a suicide attempt. Data collected from medical folders in order to explore sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients.

The mean age of the sample was 30 years. A high prevalence of female was objectified. There were a low level of education for 53%, most of patients (55%) were unemployed and came from urban area. Among our patients, 39% attempted suicide for a one time. 61% of patients attempted suicide for several times. The main risk factors related to recidivism of suicidal behavior were unemployment, family history of psychiatric disorders and family instability.

The analysis of these results justifies preventive actions in order to face the increase of suicidal recidivism by searching for these associated factors. Therefore, a multidisciplinary intervention approach is required.

Ekbom’s syndrome, also known as delusional parasitosis, is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by the delusional belief that the body is infested by parasites, small organisms or materials. Multiple etiologies have been described such as psychiatric and neurological disorders, substance intoxication or other medical conditions. We present a case of Ekbom’s syndrome in an individual infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

To report a case of a patient with Ekbom’s syndrome and HIV.

A 33-years-old man assists to the emergency unit in order to excessive drowsiness. During the evaluation an antihistamin overdose is confirmed. The patient justifies taking it by claiming to have parasites all over the skin, a fact that is ruled out. Medical history is reviewed presenting multiple visits to GP for thinking that he has parasites, performing medical examinations without alterations. Toxicological, hemogram, biochemistry, hormonal and vitamin study did not show alterations.

Due to the symptoms presented, it was decided to start antipsychotic therapy. At the beginning, the patient is not aware of needing treatment other than antiparasitic. After optimizing the olanzapine dose to reach 20 mg / day, the patient denied experiencing tactile and visual hallucinations.

Ekbom’s syndrome is a multifactorial neuropsychiatric disorder, individuals infected with HIV are at increased risk of psychotic disorders. The patient was diagnosed of psychotic disorder due to another medical condition because the history of HIV preceded the history of delusional content.

Venlafaxine is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor and its extensive use for major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. Although it has been reported that venlafaxine may have various side effects, as far as we know, spontaneous ejaculation(SE) has not been reported yet.

We aim to describe this clinical case with venlafaxine-induced SE and to discuss the possible etiological factors.

Case report and literature review.

A 53-year-old male with generalized anxiety disorder was initiated venlafaxine treatment with 75 mg/day. After two months patient’s complaints partially regressed and the dose of venlafaxine treatment was increased to 150 mg/day. 10 days after the dose increase, the patient applied with the complaint of SE 2-3 times a day. No urological etiology was found. During outpatient follow-ups, after the 5 days from reducing the daily dose to 75 mg/day, SE complaint completely regressed. After following couple of months, the patient by himself, increased the dose of venlafaxine to 150 mg/day without consulting a psychiatrist. Then SE recurred approximately 15 days later. Venlafaxine treatment dose was reduced again to 75 mg/day and urological complaints spontaneously regressed.

SE, a rare sexual side effect, represents ejaculation that occurs involuntarily and in the absence of any sexual stimuli. The possible mechanism of SE, detected as a side effect in our case, may be that increased adrenergic activity reduces ejaculatory latency and triggers spontaneous ejaculation. Antidepressant-associated sexual dysfunction could be a dose-dependent adverse event. Therefore, reducing the dosage of the treatment to a minimum effective dose could be an option.

During the COVID-19 caused lockdown, when students had to study on-line, they became highly vulnerable to stress. How different were the attitudes of university students towards COVID-19 in such situation in different countries?

The goal is to determine the differences in attitudes to COVID-19 during the lockdown among university students in Russia and Uzbekistan

In May 2020, there was an on-line survey of 163 students of both genders in Ulianov Chuvash State University in Russia and of 49 university students from Bukhara, Samarkand and Andijan in Uzbekistan. The instrument used was ‘Attitude towards COVID-19 Questionnaire’ (Nikolaev, 2020).

The comparison revealed that Uzbek students are more interested in the latest COVID-19 news than Russian ones (p=.0004), they also consider this pandemic as severe and dangerous for people (p=.0006), and think that governmental measures to fight coronavirus are adequate (p=.0008). Russian students in their turn, as compared with their Uzbek peers, feel highly concerned about the risk of their own infection (p=.00001), as well as the threat to their own life (p=.00546) and the life of their relatives and closest ones (p=.0005) as a result of coronavirus spread. In addition, Uzbek students regard themselves healthier than Russian ones (p=.0329). Students’ self-estimation of happiness does not differ (p=.0776).

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of 113 cannabinoids identified in cannabis plants. Considered as a psycho-inactive component, recently, the Court of Justice of the European Union published a ruling in which it establishes that cannabidiol extracted from the cannabis plant should not be considered a drug under the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961. Due to increased publicity on social media of the supposed benefits of this product, in addition to the lack of clear regulations, it is becoming a widely used treatment for sleep disorders.

To analyse literature for the effect of CBD in sleep disturbances, emphasizing advantages and disadvantages of its use.

We carried out a literature review in Pubmed choosing those articles focused on effect of CBD in sleep disturbances.

The review of the effect of CBD on sleep cycle suggest that medium to high doses increased REM sleep latency, and medium-low doses decreased REM sleep latency. No evidence of withdrawal syndrome was found with abrupt discontinuation of short-term treatment with CBD.

Most of the literature revised shows that the data was taken by self-questionares to CBD users. Studies suggest that a short use of medium to hight doses of CBD may improve insomnia, however, combined use with THC may result in a decrease in slow wave sleep. Longitudinal research should be done in order to understand the clinical impact of CBD on sleep.
