The self-similar source solution of the Barenblatt equation for elasto-plastic filtration through porous rock is known to be of the second kind. We determine the behaviour of the associated anomalous exponent and the profile of the solution in the limit of large compressibility and small elastic recovery of the rock.

Asymptotic methods are applied to the outdiffusion of a diffusant whose behaviour is governed by a power-law diffusivity. Both semi-infinite and finite domain problems are considered. The ‘fast’ diffusion (negative power-law) case is of particular interest, and the results are significantly different from those for the corresponding indiffusion problem.

We study the semi-empirical b—ε model which describes the time evolution of turbulent spots in the case of equal diffusivity of the turbulent energy density b and the energy dissipation rate ε. We prove that the system of two partial differential equations possesses a solution, and that after some time this solution exhibits self-similar behaviour, provided that the system has self-similar solutions. The existence of such self-similar solutions depends upon the value of a parameter of the model.

Quite precise asymptotic estimates, in terms of the relaxation parameter and the time step, are derived for travelling wave solutions to a Stefan problem with phase relaxation and a semidiscrete counterpart. These estimates quantify the regularizing effects of phase relaxation and time discretization that give rise to thin transition layers as opposed to sharp interfaces. Layer width estimates, pointwise error estimates, and asymptotic expressions for the profile of the relevant physical variables are proved. Applications to a related nonlinear Chernoff formula are also given.

We construct compactly supported self-similar solutions of the modified porous medium equation (MPME)

where the similarity exponents α and β depend on ε, m and the dimension N. This corresponds to what is known in the literature as anomalous exponents or self-similarity of the second kind, a not completely understood phenomenon. This paper performs a detailed study of the properties of the anomalous exponents of the MPME.

We consider polymerization–crystallization waves in a cylindrical reactor, in which monomer is converted to polymer in a planar front. The polymer is subsequently crystallized in a wider zone behind the front. Specifically, we study uniformly propagating polymerization–crystallization waves, and determine profiles of temperature, and concentrations of polymer and crystallized polymer, as well as the propagation velocity. A linear stability analysis of the travelling wave solutions indicates the possibility of Hopf bifurcation, which describes the transition to the experimentally observed spinning mode of propagation, in which a hot spot is observed to propagate along a helical path on the surface of the cylinder. Since conditions at the time of conversion determine the nature of the polymer produced, spiral hollows, which trace out a helical path, appear on the surface of the crystallized polymer product.

Nonstationary two-dimensional filtration in a porous medium is considered, whereby part of the medium is saturated, another part is unsaturated but wet, and the remaining part is dry. The saturated/unsaturated and unsaturated/dry interfaces are free boundaries. It is shown that there exists a unique solution, and that the saturation function is continuous in the wet portion of the medium; this implies that the two interfaces are separated. Under some monotonicity-type conditions on the initial and boundary data it is shown that the free boundaries are continuous.

We consider a state-dependent GI/G/1 queueing system characterized by the unfinished work U(t) in the system at time t. We introduce state-dependence by allowing (i) the arrival process to depend on the instantaneous value of U(t), (ii) the service rate, that is, the rate at which U(t) decreases in the absence of arrivals, to depend on U(t), and (iii) the customer's service requirement to depend on U(t*) where t* denotes the instant in which that customer entered the system. We consider the limit of short inter-arrival times and small service requests and compute asymptotic approximations to the stationary density of the unfinished work, including the stationary probability of finding the system empty, using the WKB method and the method of matched asymptotic expansions.

The relationship between mathematical models of active parameters for transmission lines is studied. Treating transmission lines as a series of differential lumped circuits, we show that pairs of line parameters for inductance and capacitance per unit length must satisfy one of two constraints. One of these is a symmetry condition, which is satisfied by passive (i.e. constant) parameters. If a parameter pair satisfies either of these constraints, the energy per unit length and power loss in the line may be written as integrals of known functions, no matter what the pair's dependence on line current and voltage may be. Potential applications of these results to other subject areas are discussed.
