We consider cocycles of isometries on spaces of non-positive curvature $H$. We show that the supremum of the drift over all invariant ergodic probability measures equals the infimum of the displacements of continuous sections under the cocycle dynamics. In particular, if a cocycle has uniform sublinear drift, then there are almost invariant sections, that is, sections that move arbitrarily little under the cocycle dynamics. If, in addition, $H$ is a symmetric space, then we show that almost invariant sections can be made invariant by perturbing the cocycle.

It is well known that optimal transport plans are cyclically monotone. The reverse implication that cyclically monotone transport plans are optimal needs some assumptions and the proof is non-trivial even if the costs are given by the squared euclidean distance on ${ \mathbb{R} }^{n} $. We establish this result as a corollary to the ergodic theorem.

We study invariant Fatou components for holomorphic endomorphisms in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$. In the recurrent case these components were classified by Fornæss and Sibony [Classification of recurrent domains for some holomorphic maps. Math. Ann. 301(4) (1995), 813–820]. Ueda [Holomorphic maps on projective spaces and continuations of Fatou maps. Michigan Math J.56(1) (2008), 145–153] completed this classification by proving that it is not possible for the limit set to be a punctured disk. Recently Lyubich and Peters [Classification of invariant Fatou components for dissipative Hénon maps. Preprint] classified non-recurrent invariant Fatou components, under the additional hypothesis that the limit set is unique. Again all possibilities in this classification were known to occur, except for the punctured disk. Here we show that the punctured disk can indeed occur as the limit set of a non-recurrent Fatou component. We provide many additional examples of holomorphic and polynomial endomorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^{2}$ with non-recurrent Fatou components on which the orbits converge to the regular part of arbitrary analytic sets.

We obtain sharp estimates on the growth rate of stable commutator length on random (geodesic) words, and on random walks, in hyperbolic groups and groups acting non-degenerately on hyperbolic spaces. In either case, we show that with high probability stable commutator length of an element of length $n$ is of order $n/ \log n$. This establishes quantitative refinements of qualitative results of Bestvina and Fujiwara and others on the infinite dimensionality of two-dimensional bounded cohomology in groups acting suitably on hyperbolic spaces, in the sense that we can control the geometry of the unit balls in these normed vector spaces (or rather, in random subspaces of their normed duals). As a corollary of our methods, we show that an element obtained by random walk of length $n$ in a mapping class group cannot be written as a product of fewer than $O(n/ \log n)$ reducible elements, with probability going to $1$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We also show that the translation length on the complex of free factors of a random walk of length $n$ on the outer automorphism group of a free group grows linearly in $n$.

In this paper, we answer the question of equivalence, or singularity, of two given quasi-stationary Markov measures on one-sided infinite words, as well as the corresponding question of equivalence of associated Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{N}$-representations. We do this by associating certain monic representations of ${\mathcal{O}}_{N}$ to quasi-stationary Markov measures and then proving that equivalence for a pair of measures is decided by unitary equivalence of the corresponding pair of representations.

We define the notion of ${\it\varepsilon}$-flexible periodic point: it is a periodic point with stable index equal to two whose dynamics restricted to the stable direction admits ${\it\varepsilon}$-perturbations both to a homothety and a saddle having an eigenvalue equal to one. We show that an ${\it\varepsilon}$-perturbation to an ${\it\varepsilon}$-flexible point allows us to change it to a stable index one periodic point whose (one-dimensional) stable manifold is an arbitrarily chosen $C^{1}$-curve. We also show that the existence of flexible points is a general phenomenon among systems with a robustly non-hyperbolic two-dimensional center-stable bundle.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group acting properly, by type-preserving automorphisms on a locally finite thick Euclidean building $\Delta $, and $K$ be the stabilizer of a special vertex in $\Delta $. It is known that $(G, K)$ is a Gelfand pair as soon as $G$ acts strongly transitively on $\Delta $; in particular, this is the case when $G$ is a semi-simple algebraic group over a local field. We show a converse to this statement, namely that if $(G, K)$ is a Gelfand pair and $G$ acts cocompactly on $\Delta $, then the action is strongly transitive. The proof uses the existence of strongly regular hyperbolic elements in $G$ and their peculiar dynamics on the spherical building at infinity. Other equivalent formulations are also obtained, including the fact that $G$ is strongly transitive on $\Delta $ if and only if it is strongly transitive on the spherical building at infinity.

We prove a meromorphic integrability criterion for the geodesic flow of an algebraic manifold of the form ${z}^{p} - f({x}_{1} , \ldots , {x}_{n} )= 0$ with the induced metric of ${ \mathbb{C} }^{n+ 1} $ and $f$ a homogeneous rational function, using a parallel between the properties of such algebraic manifolds and homogeneous potentials. We then apply this criterion to the manifolds of the form $z= {\lambda }_{1} { x}_{1}^{k} + \cdots + {\lambda }_{n} { x}_{n}^{k} $, $k\in { \mathbb{Z} }^{+ } $, and ${x}^{n} {y}^{m} {z}^{l} = 1, n, m, l\in \mathbb{Z} $, and prove that their geodesic flow is not integrable except for some given exceptional cases.

Let $A$ be a finite alphabet and $f:~A^{\ast }\rightarrow A^{\ast }$ be a morphism with an iterative fixed point $f^{{\it\omega}}({\it\alpha})$, where ${\it\alpha}\in A$. Consider the subshift $({\mathcal{X}},T)$, where ${\mathcal{X}}$ is the shift orbit closure of $f^{{\it\omega}}({\it\alpha})$ and $T:~{\mathcal{X}}\rightarrow {\mathcal{X}}$ is the shift map. Let $S$ be a finite alphabet that is in bijective correspondence via a mapping $c$ with the set of non-empty suffixes of the images $f(a)$ for $a\in A$. Let ${\mathcal{S}}\subset S^{\mathbb{N}}$ be the set of infinite words $\mathbf{s}=(s_{n})_{n\geq 0}$ such that ${\it\pi}(\mathbf{s}):=c(s_{0})f(c(s_{1}))f^{2}(c(s_{2}))\cdots \in {\mathcal{X}}$. We show that if $f$ is primitive, $f^{{\it\omega}}({\it\alpha})$ is aperiodic, and $f(A)$ is a suffix code, then there exists a mapping $H:~{\mathcal{S}}\rightarrow {\mathcal{S}}$ such that $({\mathcal{S}},H)$ is a topological dynamical system and ${\it\pi}:~({\mathcal{S}},H)\rightarrow ({\mathcal{X}},T)$ is a conjugacy; we call $({\mathcal{S}},H)$ the suffix conjugate of $({\mathcal{X}},T)$. In the special case where $f$ is the Fibonacci or Thue–Morse morphism, we show that the subshift $({\mathcal{S}},T)$ is sofic, that is, the language of ${\mathcal{S}}$ is regular.

A subset $A$ of $ \mathbb{N} $ is called an IP-set if $A$ contains all finite sums of distinct terms of some infinite sequence $\mathop{({x}_{n} )}\nolimits_{n\in \mathbb{N} } $ of natural numbers. Central sets, first introduced by Furstenberg using notions from topological dynamics, constitute a special class of IP-sets possessing rich combinatorial properties: each central set contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions and solutions to all partition regular systems of homogeneous linear equations. In this paper we investigate central sets in the framework of combinatorics on words. Using various families of uniformly recurrent words, including Sturmian words, the Thue–Morse word and fixed points of weak mixing substitutions, we generate an assortment of central sets which reflect the rich combinatorial structure of the underlying words. The results in this paper rely on interactions between different areas of mathematics, some of which have not previously been directly linked. They include the general theory of combinatorics on words, abstract numeration systems, and the beautiful theory, developed by Hindman, Strauss and others, linking IP-sets and central sets to the algebraic/topological properties of the Stone-Čech compactification of $ \mathbb{N} $.

In a recent paper the authors introduced universal and exotic generalized fixed-point algebras for weakly proper group actions on $C^{\ast }$-algebras. Here we extend the notion of weakly proper actions to actions on Hilbert modules. As a result we obtain several imprimitivity theorems establishing important Morita equivalences between universal, reduced, or exotic crossed products and appropriate universal, reduced, or exotic fixed-point algebras, respectively. In particular, we obtain an exotic version of Green’s imprimitivity theorem and a very general version of the symmetric imprimitivity theorem by weakly proper actions of product groups $G\times H$. In addition, we study functorial properties of generalized fixed-point algebras for equivariant categories of $C^{\ast }$-algebras based on correspondences.

We prove a multiple recurrence result for arbitrary measure-preserving transformations along polynomials in two variables of the form $m+ {p}_{i} (n)$, with rationally independent ${p}_{i} $ with zero constant term. This is in contrast to the single variable case, in which even double recurrence fails unless the transformations generate a virtually nilpotent group. The proof involves reduction to nilfactors and an equidistribution result on nilmanifolds.

For any $C^1$ diffeomorphism with dominated splitting, we consider a non-empty set of invariant measures that describes the asymptotic statistics of Lebesgue-almost all orbits. They are the limits of convergent subsequences of averages of the Dirac delta measures supported on those orbits. We prove that the metric entropy of each of these measures is bounded from below by the sum of the Lyapunov exponents on the dominating sub-bundle. As a consequence, if those exponents are non-negative, and if the exponents on the dominated sub-bundle are non-positive, those measures satisfy the Pesin entropy formula.

In this paper we prove the following rigidity result: let ${\it\varphi}$ be a $C^{\infty }$ topologically mixing transversely symplectic Anosov flow. If (i) its weak stable and weak unstable distributions are $C^{\infty }$ and (ii) its Hamenstädt metrics are sub-Riemannian, then up to finite covers and a constant change of time scale, ${\it\varphi}$ is $C^{\infty }$ flow conjugate to the geodesic flow of a closed locally symmetric Riemannian space of rank one.

We discuss conditions under which an affine automorphism of a compact nilmanifold is almost automorphic, and the structure of such automorphisms from dynamical as well as algebraic points of view.

We completely describe the weak closure of the powers of the Koopman operator associated with Chacon’s classical automorphism. We show that weak limits of these powers are the ortho-projector to constants and an explicit family of polynomials. As a consequence, we answer negatively the question of $\alpha $-weak mixing for Chacon’s automorphism.

Let $(X,f)$ be a topological dynamical system and ${\mathcal{F}}$ be a Furstenberg family (a collection of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ with hereditary upward property). A point $x\in X$ is called an ${\mathcal{F}}$-transitive point if for every non-empty open subset $U$ of $X$ the entering time set of $x$ into $U$, $\{n\in \mathbb{N}:f^{n}(x)\in U\}$, is in ${\mathcal{F}}$; the system $(X,f)$ is called ${\mathcal{F}}$-point transitive if there exists some ${\mathcal{F}}$-transitive point. In this paper, we first discuss the connection between ${\mathcal{F}}$-point transitivity and ${\mathcal{F}}$-transitivity, and show that weakly mixing and strongly mixing systems can be characterized by ${\mathcal{F}}$-point transitivity, completing results in [Transitive points via Furstenberg family. Topology Appl. 158 (2011), 2221–2231]. We also show that multi-transitivity, ${\rm\Delta}$-transitivity and multi-minimality can be characterized by ${\mathcal{F}}$-point transitivity, answering two questions proposed by Kwietniak and Oprocha [On weak mixing, minimality and weak disjointness of all iterates. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 32 (2012), 1661–1672].

We consider one-dimensional systems in the presence of a quasi-periodic perturbation, in the analytical setting, and study the problem of existence of quasi-periodic solutions which are resonant with the frequency vector of the perturbation. We assume that the unperturbed system is locally integrable and anisochronous, and that the frequency vector of the perturbation satisfies the Bryuno condition. Existence of resonant solutions is related to the zeros of a suitable function, called the Melnikov function—by analogy with the periodic case. We show that, if the Melnikov function has a zero of odd order and under some further condition on the sign of the perturbation parameter, then there exists at least one resonant solution which continues an unperturbed solution. If the Melnikov function is identically zero then one can push perturbation theory up to the order where a counterpart of Melnikov function appears and does not vanish identically: if such a function has a zero of odd order and a suitable positiveness condition is met, again the same persistence result is obtained. If the system is Hamiltonian, then the procedure can be indefinitely iterated and no positiveness condition must be required: as a byproduct, the result follows that at least one resonant quasi-periodic solution always exists with no assumption on the perturbation. Such a solution can be interpreted as a (parabolic) lower-dimensional torus.

We show that a germ of a holomorphic one-dimensional foliation at a singularity in a space of dimension two admits a holomorphic first integral if and only if there are infinitely many closed leaves and a finite number of separatrices, with each separatrix having linearizable holonomy. Indeed, if there are infinitely many closed leaves and the set of separatrices is finite, then the foliation admits either a holomorphic first integral or a formal simple integrating factor of Darboux type.

A partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism $f$ has the quasi-shadowing property if for any pseudo orbit $\{x_{k}\}_{k\in \mathbb{Z}}$, there is a sequence of points $\{y_{k}\}_{k\in \mathbb{Z}}$ tracing it in which $y_{k+1}$ is obtained from $f(y_{k})$ by a motion ${\it\tau}$ along the center direction. We show that any partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism has the quasi-shadowing property, and if $f$ has a $C^{1}$ center foliation then we can require ${\it\tau}$ to move the points along the center foliation. As applications, we show that any partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism is topologically quasi-stable under $C^{0}$-perturbation. When $f$ has a uniformly compact $C^{1}$ center foliation, we also give partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism versions of some theorems which hold for uniformly hyperbolic systems, such as the Anosov closing lemma, the cloud lemma and the spectral decomposition theorem.
