We consider inner functions on the unit disk which have a finite number of singularities on the unit circle. The restriction of such functions to the circle are maps onto the circle. We give sufficient conditions that these restrictions are exact endomorphisms whose natural extensions are Bernoulli and that the entropy is given by Rohlin's formula, We also give the entropy in closed form if ƒ' is in the Nevalinna class N. An example is considered. In the last section we show that if two restrictions are metrically isomorphic, they are diffeomorphic.

This survey describes the recent advances in the construction of Markov partitions for non-uniformly hyperbolic systems. One important feature of this development comes from a finer theory of non-uniformly hyperbolic systems, which we also describe. The Markov partition defines a symbolic extension that is finite-to-one and onto a non-uniformly hyperbolic locus, and this provides dynamical and statistical consequences such as estimates on the number of closed orbits and properties of equilibrium measures. The class of systems includes diffeomorphisms, flows, and maps with singularities.

Let $f:M\rightarrow M$ be a $C^{1}$ self-map of a smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ be an $f$-invariant ergodic Borel probability measure with a compact support $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$. We prove that if $f$ is Hölder mild on the intersection of the singularity set and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$, then the pointwise dimension of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ can be controlled by the Lyapunov exponents of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$ with respect to $f$ and the entropy of $f$. Moreover, we establish the distinction of the Hausdorff dimension of the critical points sets of maps between the $C^{1,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ continuity and Hölder mildness conditions. Consequently, this shows that the Hölder mildness condition is much weaker than the $C^{1,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ continuity condition. As applications of our result, if we study the recurrence rate of $f$ instead of the pointwise dimension of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$, then we deduce that the analogous relation exists between recurrence rate, entropy and Lyapunov exponents.

We examine multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations with polynomial iterates in which the polynomials may be pairwise dependent. In particular, we show that such averages are controlled by the Gowers–Host–Kra seminorms whenever the system satisfies some mild ergodicity assumptions. Combining this result with the general criteria for joint ergodicity established in our earlier work, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition under which such averages are jointly ergodic, in the sense that they converge in the mean to the product of integrals, or weakly jointly ergodic, in that they converge to the product of conditional expectations. As a corollary, we deduce a special case of a conjecture by Donoso, Koutsogiannis, and Sun in a stronger form.

A smooth transitive Anosov flow on a compact manifold N which is uniformly (a, b)-expanding at periodic points for 1 < a < b is uniformly (a − ε, b + ε)-expanding on all of N for all ε > 0.

The main result is a dominated ergodic theorem for a linear positive operator T on Lp(1 > p > ∞); the theorem holds if, and only if, T is Cesaro-bounded.

We prove that the restriction of the graph of a subfactor, ΓN,M, to an infinite subset of vertices with finite boundary has the same norm as ΓN,W. In particular, if N φ M is extremal with [M : N] > 4 and ΓN,M has an A∞, tail then ΓN, M = A∞.

We construct an area preserving homeomorphism ƒ: T2→T2 that is isotopic to the identity and fixed point free, but has the property that every essential simple closed curve C satisfies ƒ(C)∩C ≠ Ø. This answers a question of Guillou.

Let $T$ be a locally finite simplicial tree and let $\Gamma\subset{\rm Aut}(T)$ be a finitely generated discrete subgroup. We obtain an explicit formula for the critical exponent of the Poincaré series associated with $\Gamma$, which is also the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $\Gamma$; this uses a description due to Lubotzky of an appropriate fundamental domain for finite index torsion-free subgroups of $\Gamma$. Coornaert, generalizing work of Sullivan, showed that the limit set is of finite positive measure in its dimension; we give a new proof of this result. Finally, we show that the critical exponent is locally constant on the space of deformations of $\Gamma$.

The Fischer, Krieger, and fiber product covers of sofic beta-shifts are constructed and used to show that every strictly sofic beta-shift is 2-sofic. Flow invariants based on the covers are computed, and shown to depend only on a single integer that can easily be determined from the $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}$-expansion of 1. It is shown that any beta-shift is flow equivalent to a beta-shift given by some $1<\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}<2$, and concrete constructions lead to further reductions of the flow classification problem. For each sofic beta-shift, there is an action of $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ on the edge shift given by the fiber product, and it is shown precisely when there exists a flow equivalence respecting these $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-actions. This opens a connection to ongoing efforts to classify general irreducible 2-sofic shifts via flow equivalences of reducible shifts of finite type (SFTs) equipped with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$-actions.

In this paper we consider diffeomorphisms preserving hyperbolic Sinaĭ–Ruelle–Bowen (SRB) probability measures ${\it\mu}$ having intersections for almost every pair of the stable and unstable manifolds. In this context, when the dimension of the unstable manifold is constant almost everywhere, we show the ergodicity of ${\it\mu}$. As an application we obtain another proof of the ergodicity of a hyperbolic SRB measure for transitive surface diffeomorphisms, which is shown by Rodriguez Hertz, Rodriguez Hertz, Tahzibi and Ures [Uniqueness of SRB measures for transitive diffeomorphisms on surfaces. Comm. Math. Phys.306(1) (2011), 35–49].

An extended version of the ergodic closing lemma of Mañé is proved. As an application, we show that, C1 densely in the complement of the closure of Morse–Smale diffeomorphisms and those with a homoclinic tangency, there exists a weakly hyperbolic structure (dominated splittings with average hyperbolicity at almost every point on hyperbolic parts, and one-dimensional center direction when zero Lyapunov exponents are involved) over the supports of all non-atomic ergodic measures. As another application, we prove an approximation theorem, which claims that approximating the Lyapunov exponents of any non-atomic ergodic measure by those of an atomic ergodic measure by a C1 small perturbation is possible.

We determine the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the flexed Sierpiński gasket $\Lambda$, which is the limit set for a non-Moran-like non-affine geometric construction in the plane. We also provide a multifractal formalism for the Bernoulli measures on $\Lambda$, computing explicitly the pointwise dimension spectra.

We construct dynamical partitions of the torus for a diffeomorphism that is isotopic to the identity. The existence and the combinatorics of the partitions is solely determined by the rotation set of the diffeomorphism. When the rotation set consists of a single non-resonant vector, there is a whole hierarchy of partitions analogous to the partitions of the circle into the closest return intervals under an irrational circle rotation. In particular, all such torus maps are infinitely renormalizable in a natural sense.

The structures of the enveloping semigroups of certain elementary finite- and infinite-dimensional distal dynamical systems are given, answering open problems posed in 1982 by Namioka [Ellis groups and compact right topological groups. Conference in Modern Analysis and Probability (New Haven, CT, 1982) (Contemporary Mathematics, 26). American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1984, 295–300]. The universal minimal system with (topological) quasi-discrete spectrum is obtained from the infinite-dimensional case. It is proved that, on the one hand, a minimal system is a factor of this universal system if and only if its enveloping semigroup has quasi-discrete spectrum and that, on the other hand, such a factor need not have quasi-discrete spectrum in itself. This leads to a natural generalization of the property of having quasi-discrete spectrum, which is named the ${\mathcal{W}}$ -property.

Given a relatively prime pair of integers, $n\geq m>1$, there is associated a topological dynamical system which we refer to as an $n/m$-solenoid. It is also a Smale space, as defined by David Ruelle, meaning that it has local coordinates of contracting and expanding directions. In this case, these are locally products of the real and various $p$-adic numbers. In the special case, $m=2,n=3$ and for $n>3m$, we construct Markov partitions for such systems. The second author has developed a homology theory for Smale spaces and we compute this in these examples, using the given Markov partitions, for all values of $n\geq m>1$ and relatively prime.

In this paper, we consider random dynamical systems (abbreviated as RDSs) generated by compositions of one-sided stationary random endomorphisms of class C^2 of a compact manifold. We will first introduce the notions of entropy and Lyapunov exponents for such RDSs, and then prove that the entropy formula of Pesin type holds if the sample measures of an invariant measure are absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the manifold. Our result covers those obtained by Ledrappier and Young [11], and Liu [12] for i.i.d. random diffeomorphisms or (non-invertible) endomorphisms, and that obtained by [12] for two-sided stationary random endomorphisms. If the phase spaces are compact and finite-dimensional manifolds without boundary, this result may be considered as the almost-final form of Pesin entropy formula for RDSs with absolutely continuous invariant or sample measures.

We prove that any ergodic non-atomic probability-preserving action of an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group, with at least one factor being connected and of higher-rank, is essentially free. This generalizes the result of Stuck and Zimmer [Stabilizers for ergodic actions of higher rank semisimple groups. Ann. of Math. (2)139(3) (1994), 723–747], who found that the same statement holds when the ambient group is a semisimple real Lie group and every simple factor is of higher-rank. We also prove a generalization of a result of Bader and Shalom [Factor and normal subgroup theorems for lattices in products of groups. Invent. Math.163(2) (2006), 415–454] by showing that any probability-preserving action of a product of simple groups, with at least one having property $(T)$, which is ergodic for each simple subgroup, is either essentially free or essentially transitive. Our method involves the study of relatively contractive maps and the Howe–Moore property, rather than relying on algebraic properties of semisimple groups and Poisson boundaries, and introduces a generalization of the ergodic decomposition to invariant random subgroups, which is of independent interest.

We consider C∞-diffeomorphisms on a Banach space with a fixed point 0 and linear part L. Suppose that these diffeomorphisms have C∞ non-contracting and non-expanding invariant manifolds, and formally conjugate along their intersection (the center). We prove that they admit local C∞ conjugation. In particular, subject to non-resonance conditions, there exists a local C∞ linearization of the diffeomorphisms. It also follows that a family of germs with a hyperbolic linear part admits a C∞ linearization, which has C∞ dependence on the parameter of the linearizing family. The results are proved under the assumption that the Banach space allows a special extension of the maps. We discuss corresponding properties of Banach spaces. The proofs of this paper are based on the technique, developed in the works of Belitskii [Funct. Anal. Appl.18 (1984), 238–239; Funct. Anal. Appl.8 (1974), 338–339].

We say that a countable group $G$ is McDuff if it admits a free ergodic probability measure preserving action such that the crossed product is a McDuff $\text{II}_{1}$ factor. Similarly, $G$ is said to be stable if it admits such an action with the orbit equivalence relation being stable. The McDuff property, stability, inner amenability and property Gamma are subtly related and several implications and non-implications were obtained in Effros [Property $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ and inner amenability. Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.47 (1975), 483–486], Jones and Schmidt [Asymptotically invariant sequences and approximate finiteness. Amer. J. Math.109 (1987), 91–114], Vaes [An inner amenable group whose von Neumann algebra does not have property Gamma. Acta Math.208 (2012), 389–394], Kida [Inner amenable groups having no stable action. Geom. Dedicata173 (2014), 185–192] and Kida [Stability in orbit equivalence for Baumslag–Solitar groups and Vaes groups. Groups Geom. Dyn.9 (2015), 203–235]. We complete the picture with the remaining implications and counterexamples.
