Call for Editor Proposals

Professor Peter CB Phillips is completing his tenure in December 2025 as Editor of Econometric Theory (ET), and Cambridge University Press is now inviting individual and team applications for the position.

The deadline for applications is June 1, 2025.

Since its inception, Econometric Theory has aimed to endow econometrics with an innovative journal dedicated to advance theoretical research. It provides a centralized professional outlet for original theoretical contributions in all of the major areas of econometrics, and all fields of research in econometric theory fall within the scope of ET. In addition, ET fosters the multidisciplinary features of econometrics that extend beyond economics.

In recognition of the interface between theory and practice in modern econometric research, ET encourages submissions that promote best practice econometrics by demonstrating new theory in conjunction with the practical implementation of theory. As well as articles that embody original theoretical research, ET publishes historical studies on the evolution of econometric thought and interviews with the subject’s leading scholars.

We are inviting applications from those interested in taking on the editorship of the journal for an initial term of five years. It is envisaged that the new Editor(s) will ‘shadow’ Professor Phillips from September until December 2025.

We are open to applications from individuals or editorial partnerships based anywhere in the world. The successful candidate(s) will have a clear and exciting vision for the journal’s future development and the energy, commitment and standing to realise that vision.

Editorial responsibilities will include:

  • Shaping the strategic direction of the journal, in cooperation with Cambridge;
  • Promoting the journal and articles to scholars in the field;
  • Organizing and managing the editorial office, with support from Cambridge;
  • Recruiting, onboarding, and supervising a team of Co-Editors (Associate Editors);
  • Transitioning the Peer Review of articles from Editorial Express to ScholarOne;
  • Making final article acceptance decisions;
  • Approving final author proofs for publication;
  • Proposing and working with members of an active Editorial Board.

In your application, please indicate your:

  • Experience of publishing in the field;
  • Editorial experience, ideally with an academic journal;
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work as part of a team;
  • Strong professional and academic links;
  • Organizational, communication and technical skills;
  • Proposed plan for development, including areas such as:
    • Engagement with the changing landscape of academic publishing;
    • Management of journal reviewers, Co-Editors, and Editorial Board (Advisory and Editors);
    • Areas of focus for future special issues;
    • Journal metrics;
