A Late Jurassic sauropod bone-bed comprising thousands of individual skeletal elements in the Morrison Formation of Montana, USA, is re-analysed to further elucidate its taphonomic history. New data gained from detailed contextual sampling is assembled and presented to test the hypothesis of a drought-induced, mass-mortality assemblage, and its subsequent depositional emplacement by a debris flow. Large dinosaur bone-beds are well-known in the Morrison, yet the Mother's Day Quarry site is unique for the formation in depicting an apparent debris flow deposit. Use of a computer program tailored to the data allows three-dimensional reconstruction of the bone-bed and recreates the palaeoslope of the deposit, adding support to the debris flow hypothesis. Such digital manipulation of field data may allow a deeper understanding of other bone-bed origination events.

The following is the first of a series of papers which I intend to issue on South African Alcyonaria. During a lengthened residence at the Cape of Good Hope, I devoted special attention to the Alcyonaria collected on board the Government steam trawler Pieter Faure. Professor Hickson has contributed two papers on Cape Alcyonarians to the volumes Marine Investigations in South Africa; but since then a large number of forms have been dredged, and there still remain in the collection entrusted to me many unidentified and undescribed species. In this first instalment I have confined myself to the Alcyonacea. The present work has been carried on in the Zoological Institute and Museum of Natural History, Berne, and it would be difficult to overstate my indebtedness to Professor Studer, who, besides giving me much valuable advice, stimulus, and encouragement, placed the entire literature of the subject at my disposal.

The western end of the Galway granite batholith demonstrates the importance of stoping as a granite emplacement process, which is currently controversial, and also of space generation by uplift of the centre of a ring complex. The granite rings are shown (with a coloured 1:25 000 geological map) to be consanguineous, near coeval, and older than the 407–410 Ma late molybdenite mineralisation. A newly-recognised Mace–Ards granite, around and injected by the Aplitic Murvey-type granite of the ring core (both lacking hornblende and titanite), has biotite–muscovite–cordierite orbs and sulphide–granite orbs, showing separation of immiscible hydrous and sulphide fluids from the late magma which, with vugs, indicates a low pressure, near-roof site. The outer ring of the Errisbeg Townland granite (ETG, the main batholith granite with K-feldspar phenocrysts), was emplaced by progressive outward stoping of the country rock metagabbro, as shown by mapping, and by chemical fractionation of feldspars, biotites and bulk rocks, to the marginal, dry, fine-grained aphyric, in part garnetiferous, highly fractionated, siliceous Murvey granite. Stoping ceased when, after previously invading dense metagabbro, the outer ring complex reached the low-density Roundstone granite, which is shown for the first time to be older than the Galway batholith. This arresting of the batholith intrusion shows that stoping was such a significant process that emplacement ceased when stoping became impossible. The inside edge of the ETG grades into the slightly later, intrusive, aphyric Carna granite, which shows inward fractionation to the wet magma of the Mace–Ards granite. The ring complex core was injected by highly fractionated, dry, Aplitic Murvey-type granite, intensely hydrothermally altered by late magmatic water. The radially outward dipping, inclined igneous layering in the ETG shows that the original ETG centre was pushed upwards by the intruded Carna granite and eroded away. The Galway granite and its nearby magmatism matches the low Ba and Sr, high Th and Rb, Scottish Cairngorm Suite and similarly has few appinitic rocks associated with it. Magmatism extended over >45 Myr from ∼425 Ma to 380 Ma. It originated by slab breakoff and consequent rise of the asthenosphere, causing deep crustal melting.

Ten new early actinopterygian taxa are described from material collected from five North Lanarkshire coal shale tips in the Midland Valley of Scotland. The newly described taxa include Rhadinichthys? ornatocephalum, Rhadinichthys glabrolepis, Pseudogonatodus aurulentum, Pseudohaplolepis argentatum, Rhadinichthys? plumosum and Lanarkichthys gardineri. Also included are the haplolepids Blairolepis wallacei, Parahaplolepis poppaea, Braccohaplolepis fenestratum and Andrewsolepis lochlani. Additional information was also obtained for a further two named species, Rhadinichthys monensis Egerton and Rhadinichthys grossarti Traquair. The material used for this study was obtained from finely laminated slabs of carbonaceous shale containing incomplete and disarticulated specimens, including isolated skull dermal elements and scales preserved en masse. Using this information, the dermal skull bones of a number of taxa were reconstructed and illustrated in dorsal and lateral views. Furthermore, morphological characteristics of the skull roof of each taxon was used to obtain an appropriate dataset, in order to undertake non-vigorous phylogenic analyses to demonstrate possible relationships between the various groups within the assemblage. In addition, ossified endocranial remains from specimens of Rhadinichthys monensis were examined.

The deposits of the Devonian period over a large area in the interior of North America to the south of the great lakes are known to be wholly of marine type and to have continued those of the Silurian period. They were formed in a great gulf open to the south. Along the western border of this gulf shore-deposits and, during Upper Devonian times, deposits of Old Red Sandstone type were accumulated, while in the middle of the gulf the resulting rocks were limestones and shales. In Ohio, following on a narrow band of what is regarded as Oriskany Sandstone (Lower Devonian), the Corniferous limestone and some local representatives of the Hamilton formation represent the Middle Devonian. Above this comes a great mass of black shale, which here represents the whole Upper Devonian and may continue up into black shales of the Lower Carboniferous. A black shale at the base of the Upper Devonian rocks has an extensive range in the central region of North America, being represented by the Huron shale in Canada and the Genessee shale in New York. Drifted land plants from the coast of the gulf, or from islands in it, have been found in the black shale and also in the underlying Corniferous limestone, and some other fossils are commonly spoken of as Algæ but have afforded little or no botanical information.

The collection of Scotia corals is naturally small, since the main work of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition was in high Southern latitudes, but, during the outward and homeward journeys of the Scotia, collections were made, when opportunity presented itself.

The species are interesting distributionally, but their soft parts are largely decayed. There are five species, of which one is a known species; three dead masses, generically determinable; and the last, a new species, which may in future prove of even greater interest than at the present time.

I was led to the following investigations while seeking an elementary, and at the same time instructive, application of Hamilton's General Method in Optics. They were completed in all but a few of their numerical details before I met with the remarkable paper by Wollaston, in which the subject of multiple atmospheric images seems first to have been treated by a sound physical method. Wollaston's experiment with a long bar of iron raised to a high temperature suggests undoubtedly the true explanation of at least many of the curious phenomena seen by Vince, Scoresby, and others. But he seems to have thought that sufficient temperature-differences for the natural production of the phenomena could not exist in the atmosphere; and thus the latter part of his paper, in which he tries to explain them by the agency of aqueous vapour, presents a singular contrast to the strength and correctness of the earlier part. A good deal of what follows is implied, if not directly stated, in Wollaston's paper; but I think there is sufficient novelty in what remains to justify my bringing it before the Society.

The Polychæte family Scalibregmidæ comprises seven genera, the limits and interrelationships of which are, however, still imperfectly known. The present paper results from a detailed study of one of these genera, a new species of which is described, chiefly from a specimen collected in Scotia Bay, South Orkneys, and entrusted to me for examination by Dr W. S. Bruce.

Description of the Specimen Collected in Scotia Bay, South Orkneys.: This specimen, the only Scalibregmid found by the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, was dredged on a stony bottom in ten fathoms at Station 325, in Scotia Bay, South Orkneys (lat. 60° 43′ 42″ S.; long. 44° 38′ 33″ W.), in August 1903.

The worm, which is yellowish brown in colour (in alcohol), is 19 mm. long. The anterior portion is broad; the maximum breadth, 3 mm., is reached about the level of the 10th segment; from this region the worm tapers gradually to the anal segment. The dorsal surface of the worm is strongly convex; the ventral surface is flattened, and there is a well-marked depression which extends along the mid-ventral line from the 2nd chætiferous segment almost to the anus.

Assemblages of well-preserved dispersed spores have been recovered from the ‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ deposits of the Berriedale Outlier in the Northern Highlands of Scotland. They belong to the annulatus–sextantii Spore Assemblage Biozone (AS SAB), in the spore zonation of Richardson & McGregor (1986), indicating an Early Devonian Emsian (but not earliest Emsian or latest Emsian) age. Comparison with the spore zonation of Streel et al. (1987) suggests they may be confined to the annulatus–bellatulus Oppel Zone (AB OZ), further constraining the age to early Emsian. This new biostratigraphical datum provides an age constraint for the onset of ‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ sedimentation in the Orcadian Basin and, in particular, northwest of the Great Glen Fault System on the Northern Highlands. In the Orcadian Basin, there is a gap between ‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ and ‘Middle Old Red Sandstone’ sedimentation, represented by either unconformity or disconformity, which appears to be variable in duration. In the Berriedale Outlier, it is estimated to represent up to 16 million years, but with an unknown thickness of ‘Lower Old Red Sandstone’ sequence removed at the unconformity. However, this basin-wide unconformity/disconformity is likely due to minor, local rather than large-scale, regional tectonism, and the evidence suggests little, if any, syn-depositional strike-slip movement along the Great Glen Fault System during Devonian ‘Old Red Sandstone’ deposition. The described spore assemblage is the most diverse AS SAB/AB OZ assemblage described from the British Isles. However, compared to contemporary spore assemblages from elsewhere on the Old Red Sandstone continent, the Scottish material is rather depauperate, with certain key taxa absent. This probably reflects subtle ecological effects, with the Scottish material representing restricted floras of the inland intermontaine basins.

Sanders and Johnston (1989) have recently suggested that the Stac Fada Member is a fluidised peperite rather than a volcanic mudflow as thought by Lawson (1972) and the writer (1988). I agree that the volcanic mudflow hypothesis is flawed, but give reasons below for thinking that the new hypothesis is also untenable.

In my former paper on the subject, I selected the following problem:—

From a given square, one quarter is cut off, to divide the remaining gnomon into four such parts that they shall be capable of forming a square.

The gnomon is, I assume, incapable of being formed into a square by being cut into three parts, and consequently the number of different ways in which it can be so formed, by cutting it into four parts, must be very limited. But, to show the fertility of the method of superposition, I exhibited the solution of the problem in twelve different manners. Many of these, no doubt, have much that is in common, whilst, on the other hand, some (such as the 12th) differ in every feature from the rest. I had thoughts of following up my plea for the study of the old geometry, by exhibiting the solutions of the 47th proposition of Euclid's first book in their beautiful variety. I have indeed temptation to do so. The modification which I gave of the demonstration of this proposition in the notes to my edition of Playfair's Geometry (edition 1846, p. 273), has had the honour of being exhibited in two different mechanical forms. The first by two rotations without sliding, whereby the two squares on the sides, when placed together, are converted into the square on the hypothenuse; the second, by two transpositions (slidings) without rotation, whereby the same change is effected The former is obvious enough, and could have escaped nobody. The latter is described by Professor De-Morgan in the “Quarterly Journal of Mathematics,” vol. i. p. 236.

Characterising the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of hydraulic conductivity and its variability in the shallow subsurface is fundamental to understanding groundwater behaviour and to developing conceptual and numerical groundwater models to manage the subsurface. However, directly measuring in situ hydraulic conductivity can be difficult and expensive and is rarely carried out with sufficient density in urban environments. In this study we model hydraulic conductivity for 603 sites in the unconsolidated Quaternary deposits underlying Glasgow using particle size distribution and density description widely available from geotechnical investigations. Six different models were applied and the MacDonald formula was found to be most applicable in this heterogeneous environment, comparing well with the few available in situ hydraulic conductivity data. The range of the calculated hydraulic conductivity values between the 5th and 95th percentile was 1.56×10–2–4.38mday–1 with a median of 2.26×10–1 mday–1. These modelled hydraulic conductivity data were used to develop a suite of stochastic 3D simulations conditioned to existing 3D representations of lithology. Ten per cent of the input data were excluded from the modelling process for use in a split-sample validation test, which demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach compared with non-spatial or lithologically unconstrained models. Our spatial model reduces the mean squared error between the estimated and observed values at the excluded data locations over those predicted using a simple homogeneous model by 73 %. The resulting 3D hydraulic conductivity model is of a much higher resolution than would have been possible from using only direct measurements, and will improve understanding of groundwater flow in Glasgow and reduce the spatial uncertainty of hydraulic parameters in groundwater process models. The methodology employed could be replicated in other regions where significant volumes of suitable geotechnical and site investigation data are available to predict ground conditions in areas with complex superficial deposits.

The mosses of Kincardine and Flanders are situated in that extensive plain or carse which begins at Borrowstounness, on the south side of the Frith of Forth, and a little above Eastern Kincardine, on the north side. It stretches along both sides, first of the Frith, and afterwards of the river Forth, as far as Cardross, about twenty-two miles west of the point where it begins. The breadth of this plain, or carse, at Falkirk, where it is widest,is about seven miles, including what is occupied by the Frith.

The 150-m-thick Kuetsjärvi Sedimentary Formation (KSF) from the Pechenga Greenstone Belt, NW Russia, is one of the key formations in the study of a positive δ13Ccarb excursion occurring globally in the Palaeoproterozoic. The KSF formed in an intracratonic rift setting and is sandwiched between two, 2-km-thick subaerially erupted volcanic units. The KSF was previously interpreted as shallow marine, but new data reported here indicate that it is a non-marine unit deposited on a deeply subaerially weathered surface mantling the underlying volcanic rocks. The lowermost part of the KSF represents an alluvial–fluvial plain, followed by a laterally and vertically variable succession of variegated to mottled fine-grained siliciclastic rocks and ‘red beds‘, dolostones containing stromatolite sheets, hydrothermal travertine deposits and abundant desiccation features (e.g.tepees, surfical silicified crusts and dissolution cavities), including probable pseudomorphed evaporites. Measured S and Corg concentrations for the carbonate and siliciclastic rocks are low. Combined, these features indicate that the carbonate rocks of the KSF accumulated in a shallow lacustrine setting. Major types of carbonate facies were formed by: (1) biologically-induced precipitation; (2) evaporitic removal of CO2 in a closed lake environment; and (3) chemical precipitation from thermal springs. Apparently, none of these carbonate facies was in full isotopic equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. This interpretation shows the importance of taking into account the interplay between global and local depositional factors when interpreting the isotopic signature of the KSF dolostones and its implication for the Palaeoproterozoic carbon isotope excursion

Palaeoecology has been prominent in studies of environmental change during the Holocene epoch in Scotland. These studies have been dominated by palynology (pollen, spore and related bio-and litho-stratigraphic analyses) as a key approach to multi- and inter-disciplinary investigations of topics such as vegetation, climate and landscape change. This paper highlights some key dimensions of the pollen- and vegetation-based archive, with a focus upon woodland dynamics, blanket peat, human impacts, biodiversity and conservation. Following a brief discussion of chronological, climatic, faunal and landscape contexts, the migration, survival and nature of the woodland cover through time is assessed, emphasising its time-transgressiveness and altitudinal variation. While agriculture led to the demise of woodland in lowland areas of the south and east, the spread of blanket peat was especially a phenomenon of the north and west, including the Western and Northern Isles. Almost a quarter of Scotland is covered by blanket peat and the cause(s) of its spread continue(s) to evoke recourse to climatic, topographic, pedogenic, hydrological, biotic or anthropogenic influences, while we remain insufficiently knowledgeable about the timing of the formation processes. Humans have been implicated in vegetational change throughout the Holocene, with prehistoric woodland removal, woodland management, agricultural impacts arising from arable and pastoral activities, potential heathland development and afforestation. The viability of many current vegetation communities remains a concern, in that Scottish data show reductions in plant diversity over the last 400 years, which recent conservation efforts have yet to reverse. Palaeoecological evidence can be used to test whether conservation baselines and restoration targets are appropriate to longer-term ecosystem variability and can help identify when modern conditions have no past analogues.

The pseudosuchian archosaur Ornithosuchus, from the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation (Late Triassic), Scotland, was the first ornithosuchid to be discovered, and the only one recorded, in the northern hemisphere. The fossil record of “Ornithosuchus longidens” is mainly based on natural moulds and, in a few cases, three-dimensional bony elements, complicating the interpretation of its anatomy. The taxonomy of this species has changed several times since the late 1800s and here we revisit its current status. The synonymy of “Dasygnathoides longidens” and Ornithosuchus woodwardi proposed by Walker (1964) is rejected, based on new interpretations of the holotype and referred specimens of “Dasygnathoides longidens”. The latter species is considered as a nomen dubium, because it lacks diagnostic features and cannot be identified beyond Pseudosuchia. As a result, Ornithosuchus woodwardi is resurrected as a valid species and its diagnosis is emended. The body size range of Ornithosuchus woodwardi is reduced to about a half, because ELGNM 1, previously considered the largest specimen of the genus, can no longer be referred to it. “Dasygnathoides longidens” cannot be assigned to any of the known archosauriforms from the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation, but it still represents the largest predator currently known for its fauna.

The late Brigantian topmost parts of the Pathhead Formation (Aberlady Formation in East Lothian) and the succeeding Lower Limestone Formation crop out widely in Fife and East Lothian. The successions include nine deltaic, coastal floodplain and marine shelf cycles (cyclothems), of which the lowest examined terminates the Pathhead and Aberlady Formations and the remaining eight constitute the Lower Limestone Formation.

The cyclothems conform broadly to the ‘Yoredale” transgressive/regressive pattern in which a transgressive marine shelf phase is succeeded by delta progradation and terminates with a fluvial delta plain phase. Cycles may combine to form compound cyclothems up to more than 50 m thick, in which a basal, typically complete initial cycle of Yoredale pattern is succeeded by up to five base-absent minor cycles. These are thinner, more variable and less laterally persistent units in which the marine phase is weakly represented or absent.

Cyclothems reflect successive marine flooding events, possibly under eustatic control, succeeded by delta progradation and, ultimately, leading to extensive palaeosol formation, including coal seams. Sedimentation and palaeosol formation were partly controlled by fault-induced differential subsidence and are likely to have been related to autocyclic processes. Local uplift and subsidence associated with vulcanicity, as at Kinghorn and Elie, have led to thickening or thinning of sediments accumulated in a given time period.

Initial cycles initiate longer-period allocycles, corresponding broadly to third-order Exxon Production & Research (EPR) Type 1 sequences having a periodicity of around 1 Ma, within the Milankovitch orbital band. Two parasequences constitute each initial cycle: a lower, initiated on a marine flooding surface, and an upper, bounded by the base of the lowest thick sandstone in the cycle; cyclothem bases and sequence bases thus alternate. Parasequences and sequences are less well defined in minor cycles due to the problem of tracing the combined disconformity and soil profile of the underclay beyond the edge of channel sandstones. Minor cycles were controlled primarily by short-period autocyclic sedimentary and, or, tectonic processes, including delta-lobe switching and differential subsidence.

Although we have attempted to interpret the deposits of Fife and the Lothians in terms of sequence stratigraphy, we are not fully convinced that the patterns of associated changes widely recognised within the framework of sequence stratigraphy can be confidently applied in succesions in which autocyclic changes feature strongly in an area undergoing active basin subsidence associated with strike-slip faulting. There is no doubt that some of the cyclicity discerned in the late Brigantian successions of eastern Scotland was related to eustatic sea level changes, which gave rise to the widespread limestone platforms or marine bands. The formation of eight cyclothems within the 2·5–3·5 Ma of late Brigantian suggests a cyclicity of about 400 ka, which corresponds to the long period eccentricity cycles of Milankovitch rather than the 0·5–5·0 Ma of third-order EPR cycles.

As the largest industrial and population centre in China, the Pearl River Delta is facing a growing threat of heavy metal pollution from local mining and power industries. This study investigates the distribution and potential health risks of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in paddy soils and rice at four typical sites. The Nemerow synthetic pollution index (PN) of soils from Fogang, Dabao Mountain, Shaoguan and Lechang were 8.40, 9.10, 4.64 and 10.28, respectively, indicating serious pollution at all four sampling sites. The average concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn in rice grains were 2.23, 10.98, 29.84 and 1.62 times their corresponding maximum allowable levels, indicating potential health risks to humans. Cd has greater bioavailability because of its high mobility from soil to roots, and its subsequent transfer to grains. Pb mainly accumulates in roots because of its lower translocation rate from roots to grains. The greatest health risk index for Cd and Pb for adults and children was at the Shaoguan site, probably due to pollution from atmospheric deposition. Cd and Pb had greater health risk indices than Cu and Zn at almost all sites, indicating a major health risk to local people.

Twenty-one trilobite species belonging to 18 genera are described from the measured section of the Pagoda Formation (Caradoc) at Donggongsi, Zunyi, Guizhou Province, China. The fauna is numerically dominated by the hammatocnemid Ovalocephalus and remopleuridid Dislobosaspis (gen. nov.), and the Ovalocephalus–Dislobosaspis Biofacies is established to represent a shallow outer-shelf trilobite association. The lithofacies and trilobite taphonomy indicate a comparatively quiet and undisturbed depositional environment. Trilobites exhibit strong SE Asian affinities and formed part of the Peri-Gondwana fauna. They are closely related to those of South- Central Europe but show some Baltoscandian aspects.

An alteration zone at the base of a Carboniferous lava flow on the island of Bute resembles modern and ancient weathering profiles, but it is ‘upside down’ in the sense that alteration is most intense at the base and decreases upwards. Values for a Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) increase from fresh lava and corestones downwards to fine-grained structureless material. The altered material is Mg- and Cu-rich, possibly as a result of migration of these elements from underlying sediments. Rare earth elements (REE) display considerable and systematic mobility and fractionation. In general heavy rare earth elements (HREE) are concentrated during alteration, whereas the light rare earth elements (LREE) are lost. Mobility of the REE appears to be related to atomic weight, with La (the lightest REE) being the most depleted through to Lu, which is the most concentrated REE in the highly altered material. Similar systematic fractionation is shown by some weathering profiles developed on mafic igneous rocks. Movement of water into the volcanic rocks was probably driven by a steep thermal gradient between the hot lava and its sedimentary substrate.
