Charnockite and homophanous leptynite are two quartz–feldspar neosomes in the late Archaean granulite-migmatite Eastern Ghats terrane of Orissa, India. Three phases of deformation and metamorphism are recognised to have preceded a late phase, or phases in which deformation was not intense. An early granulite facies event (D1–M1) produced basic granulites and khondalite (sillimanite-garnet aluminous paragneiss). A second event (D2–M2) involved some retrogression but temperatures and pressures remained high (possibly c. 750°C—>5 kb). D3–M3 was associated with the development of open folds (F3) with axial planar shear zones in pinched antiforms; temperatures and pressures were also falling (c. 650°C— 4kb), but the shear zones acted as a control on the development of firstly homophanous leptynite, and secondly charnockite. In both cases, neosomes of quartz and potassium feldspar have myrmekitic textures and intergranular occurrence. The palaeosome became strained and garnet–biotite and garnet–biotite–clinopyroxene ± orthopyroxene mineral assemblages were formed in association with the development, respectively, of homophanous leptynite and charnockite. The persistence of straining in the palaeosome and the presence of poikilitic textures indicate that this typical assemblage does not represent one in thermodynamic equilibrium. This has important consequences for geothermobarometry.

The structural control on neosome development reflects a regional characteristic where shear zones are the site of peralkaline plutons, fenitisation, carbonatites and epigenetic graphite development. The peculiar features of charnockite are seen as just one of several aspects related to the fluxing of hot CO2-dominated fluids from either the deep crust or mantle during the late Archaean development of the Indian craton.

In the course of an examination of Bishop Berkeley's “New Theory of Vision,” the foundation of the Ideal Philosophy, I have found it necessary to repeat many old experiments, and to make many new ones, in reference to the functions of the eye as an optical instrument. I had imagined that many points in the physiology of vision were irrevocably fixed, and placed beyond the reach of controversy; but though this supposition may still be true in the estimation of that very limited class of philosophers who have really studied the subject, yet it is mortifying to find that the laws of vision, as established by experiment and observation, are as little understood as they were in the days of Locke and Berkeley. Metaphysicians and physiologists have combined their efforts in substituting unfounded speculation for physical truth; and even substantial discoveries have been prematurely placed in opposition to opinions of which they are the necessary result.

A new unusual tapejarid pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous Romualdo Formation (Araripe Basin, Brazil) is described, based on a skull, lower jaw and some postcranial elements. Caupedactylus ybaka gen. et sp. shows the typical high nasoantorbital fenestra of the Thalassodrominae but lacks a palatal ridge, and shares with the Tapejarinae several features, including a downturned rostral end, allowing its allocation to that clade. Furthermore, the new species differs in having an anteriorly and posteriorly expanded premaxillary sagittal crest, the lacrimal process of the jugal strongly inclined, and a slit-like postpalatine fenestra, among other characters. The region of the left jugal-quadratojugal-quadrate shows a pathology that is likely the result of an infection. The lateral surface of the premaxillary crest presents grooves that were interpreted in other pterosaurs as impressions of blood vessels, corroborating growing evidence that cranial crests could have been involved in thermoregulation. Also, the new species has a well-preserved palate with a large palatine forming the anterior region of the choanae and the postpalatine fenestra and a secondary subtemporal fenestra. Since the latter has been regarded as unique to non-pterodactyloids, its occurrence in Caupedactylus demonstrates that the evolution of palatal region in pterosaurs is more complex than previously thought.

This investigation first commenced in the examination of a few special points which had arisen in connection with Professor Ewart's investigations on the Cranial Nerves and Lateral Sense Organs of Elasmobranchs. As this examination revealed facts of more interest than was expected, it occurred to me to investigate very thoroughly the whole of the cranial nerves of this animal, and to publish the results as a continuation of the work already alluded to. The research turned out to be much easier and more interesting than I had anticipated, and, as regards its cranial nerves at any rate, Chimæra is unrivalled among vertebrates, first, for the ease with which its nerves may be dissected, and second, for the almost ideal results that are to be obtained. The endless perplexity and mystification produced by the study of the trigeminal and facial nerves of the cartilaginous fishes,—dispelled to a very great extent, it is true, by the researches of Marshall and Spencer,—would probably have never arisen if Stannius had made a careful examination of the roots of the 5th and 7th nerves of his Chimæra. This, however, he omitted to do in the very form—in fact, as far as we know, the only form—which would have repaid the investigation ; and hence the embryologist stepped in and made a discovery that the anatomist had just, and only just, failed to grasp. The more important facts, therefore, relating to the cranial nerves of the Holocephali are, it is claimed, here recorded for the first time.

Marine shelf siliciclastics of the early Cambrian Buen Formation of North Greenland have yielded the earliest abundant, well localised Bradoriida (Arthropoda) from the Laurentian part of North America: the shelf-dwelling Petrianna gen. nov. Petrianna apparently has a fairly rigid, phosphatic shell. Its assignment to the Cambriidae, a family markedly dissimilar morphologically from the phosphatocopines (the only Bradoriida hitherto regarded as having a primary phosphatic shell), implies rejection of the criterion of carapace composition in the ordinal/subordinal classification of Bradoriida.

Petrianna confirms the Bradoriida as a consistent component of the earliest arthropod faunas. Cambriids are currently known only from the early Cambrian of Greenland, Siberia and China and offer potential for correlation. Cambriid occurrences span parts of the Redlichiid, Olenellid and Bigotinid trilobite faunal realms but are known only from tropical/subtropical regions, thus indicating possible palaeolatitudinal controls on their distribution.

The upper Cambrian trilobite Olenus wahlenbergi Westergård, 1922 occurs abun- dantly in stinkstone concretions in the Alum Shales at Andrarum, in Skåne, southern Sweden (Olenus/Homagnostus obesus Zone). All growth stages from anaprotaspis onwards are represented, though the early stages are comparatively uncommon and complete specimens are rare. Fine details of structure are preserved, suitable for scanning electron microscopic study.

The protaspis has five axial rings, which in the adult become divided transversely and reduced to three, and the preglabellar field expands markedly in the holaspis. The librigena broadens during development and the eye, with its widely separated lenses is retained on the librigena throughout meraspid development. The visual surface dehisces during ecdysis from the early holaspid onwards, due to emplacement of the ocular suture. The hypostome apparently changes from a conterminant to a natant condition in the early holaspis, which is consistent with the growth of the preglabellar field at this stage. The transitory pygidium has a slightly serrated margin throughout development, but becomes entire when all thoracic segments have been liberated.

Cuticular sculpture changes dramatically throughout ontogeny. Large (Type A) tubercles appear on the fixigena in early meraspides; these become prominent and coalesce by the end of meraspid development. They are abruptly replaced by smaller (Type B) tubercles in the early holaspid, which link to form a rough network in mature specimens. Comparable Type A tubercles in early meraspid librigenae give rise to a strong polygonal caecal sculpture in holaspids, while a radial sculpture on the broadening anterior border develops independently. The significance of these cuticular changes remains obscure. A median occipital organ is described for the first time in the Olenidae.

The Duntulm Formation of the Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) Great Estuarine Group represents a marine-brackish lagoonal complex which was transgressively established on the drowned delta of the underlying Valtos Sandstone Formation. Duntulm Formation sediments accumulated in adjacent basins, the Sea of the Hebrides-and Inner Hebrides-basins. Litho-, bio-, and palynofacies analysis of these rocks show that the most distinctive lithologies, monotypic shell banks of the oyster Praeexogyra hebridica (Lithofacies 1), accumulated under variable, but distinctly marine conditions. Argillaceous carbonate muds (Lithofacies 2), probably accumulated in the lee of the oyster banks under variably marine-freshwater conditions, while the supralittoral lagoon shores were fringed by algal marshes (Lithofacies 3). The palynology of Lithofacies 3 shows that some marshes accumulated close to the lagoon (dominated by marine dinocysts), while others formed further inland (dominated by terrestrial pollen and spores). In the N of the Sea of the Hebrides Basin, small deltas continued to prograde into the lagoons (Lithofacies 4), and toward the end of Duntulm Formation times, muds and sands colonised by freshwater molluscs (Unio and Neomiodon), the planktonic alga Botryococcus, and dominated by terrestrial pollen and spores (Lithofacies 5), accumulated in this area, representing a basin-wide change from marine to freshwater conditions. The structural high which divided the basins exerted a strong control on lithofacies evolution, effectively preventing any material coarser than silt grade entering the Inner Hebrides Basin. Thickness variation in the Formation is similarly structurally/facies linked, with thick sequences accumulating where sandstones (Lithofacies 4) predominate, and thin sequences occurring close to the structural high.

Tertiary–Recent magmatism in the Kenya Rift Valley was initiated c. 35 Ma, in the northern part of Kenya. Initiation of magmatism then migrated southwards, reaching northern Tanzania by 5–8 Ma. This progression was accompanied by a change in the nature of the lithosphere, from rocks of the Panafrican Mozambique mobile belt through reworked craton margin to rigid, Archaean craton. Magma volumes and the geochemistry of mafic volcanic rocks indicate that magmatism has resulted from the interaction with the lithosphere of melts and/or fluids from one or more mantle plumes. Whilst the plume(s) may have been characterised by an ocean island basalt-type component, the chemical signature of this component has everywhere been heavily overprinted by heterogeneous lithospheric mantle. Primary mafic melts have fractionated over a wide range of crustal pressures to generate suites resulting in trachytic (silica-saturated and-undersaturated) and phonolitic residua. Various Neogene trachytic and phonolitic flood sequences may alternatively have resulted from volatile-induced partial melting of underplated mafic rocks. High-level partial melting has generated peralkaline rhyolites in the south–central rift. Kenyan magmatism may, at some future stage, show an increasing plume signature, perhaps associated ultimately with continental break-up.

When basaltic magma is emplaced into continental crust, melting and generation of granitic magma can occur. We present experimental and theoretical investigations of the fluid dynamical and heat transfer processes at the roof and floor of a basaltic sill in which the wall rocks melt. At the floor, relatively low density crustal melt rises and mixes into the overlying magma, which would form hybrid andesitic magma. Below the roof the low-density melt forms a stable layer with negligible mixing between it and the underlying hotter, denser magma. Our calculations applied to basaltic sills in hot crust predict that sills from 10-1500 m thick require only 2-200 years to solidify, during which time large volumes of overlying layers of convecting silicic magma are formed. These time scales are very short compared with the lifetimes of large silicic magma systems of around 106 years, and also with the time scale of 107 years for thermal relaxation of the continental crust. An important feature of the process is that crystallisation and melting occur simultaneously, though in different spots of the source region. The granitic magmas formed are thus a mixture of igneous phenocrysts and lesser amounts of restite crystals. Several features of either plutonic or volcanic silicic systems can be explained without requiring large, high-level, long-lived magma chambers.

At least since the Cretaceous Terrestrial Revolution, the geographical distribution of aphids, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, has been strongly affected by the low thermal tolerance of their obligatory bacterial symbiont, Buchnera aphidicola, which was why the aphids switched to obligate parthenogenesis in low latitudes. Hormaphidids and greenideids penetrated into the tropics only after the Oligocene strengthening of climate seasonality, and specialisations of the tropical representatives of these families did not allow them to spread further south (in the case of cerataphidines), or only allowed in few cases (in the case of greenideids).

Aphids suffered from the Mesozoic–Cenozoic boundary extinction event much more strongly than other insects. The extinction was roughly coincidental with the establishment of the tight symbiosis of aphids with formicine and dolichoderine ants, which was accompanied by the flourishing of all three groups.

In the Cretaceous, all of the representatives of extant and subfamilies occupied positions that were subordinate to Armaniinae and Sphecomyrminae. Prior to large ant colonies evolving their efficient ant–aphid mutualism, the aphids remained unprotected before the growing ant predation. The origin of the aphid trophobiosis with large colonies of Formicinae and Dolichoderinae has resulted in the steep decline of aphids left beyond that ant–aphid symbiotic network. By at least the basal Eocene (unlike the Late Cretaceous), ant proportions in the entomofauna increased sharply, and evident dominants emerged. Even now, aphid milkers from small colonies (hundreds of specimens) never protect their symbionts, and homopteran-tending ants are more likely to be dominant, with large colonies of 104–105 workers.

The mutualistic ant–aphid system failed to cross the tropical belt during the Cenozoic because of Buchnera's low heat tolerance. As a result, the native southern temperate aphid fauna consists now of seven genera only, five of which are Late Cretaceous relicts. Some of them had relatives in Late Cretaceous amber of the Northern Hemisphere.

3050 dead molluscan shells and fragments of calcareous algae were collected from 104 benthic stations at depths from 2 to 160 m in the Firth of Clyde, the Firth of Lorne and on the Orkney shelf, British Isles. The following micro-algal borings were recognised and are described: (i) Rhodophyta: Conchocelis, (ii) Chlorophyta: Ostreobium quekettii, Eugomontia sacculata, Phaeophila sp. and (iii) Cyanophyta: Plectonema terebrans, Hyella spp.

These endolithic algae are bathymetrically zoned. Eugomontia, Phaeophila and the cyanophytes characterize the upper part of the photic zone (2–20 m). Shallow sheltered environments are typified by a high density of algal borings, most of them aligned perpendicular to shell surfaces. The lower photic zone is characterized by Ostreobium and Conchocelis whose borings are parallel to shell surfaces. The photic limit is about 40 m for the open Orkney shelf (59°N), and about 22 m for the partly enclosed firths (56°N).

The Orkney population is dominated by two chlorophyte taxa: rhodophytes and cyanophytes are absent. This may be due to higher tidal energy conditions.

One new genus and nineteen new species of trilobites from the platy upper Stinchar Limestone of the Girvan District are described. Sixteen of the twenty-nine genera recorded occur in the stratigraphically earlier confinis Flags; the strong North American stamp provided by many of these forms is greatly strengthened by the appearance of such genera as Dimeropyge, Mesotaphraspis, Heliomera and Pliomerella. Hypodicranotus has hitherto been recorded only from strata of Trenton Limestone age in North America and Baffin Island.

The Entomostraca recorded here were collected by the S.Y. Scotia on its way to and from the Antarctic, and also while carrying on investigations there during the years 1902 to 1904. The Entomostraca in these collections belong chiefly to the Copepoda, but the Cladocera and Ostracoda are also represented, the last by a considerable number of species. These three groups are described below in the order mentioned.

Minimum T and P conditions for the crystallisation of banded amphibole (tschermakitic pargasite)-bearing garnet metapyroxenites that occur beneath and within a tectonically emplaced unit of serpentinite are 900±70°C and 10–11 (possibly 14–15) kb. This indicates both a depth provenance of at least 35–45 km for the obducted oceanic lithosphre which forms part of the ophiolite assemblage of the Ballantrae complex and also a palaeoheat-flow of at least 20°C/km. The metapyroxenites are interpreted as representing the products of subsolidus recrystallisation of a mantle accumulate pyroxenite. Together with associated amphibolites and epidote-rich mylonites formed at higher levels, they constitute a thin, transported and telescoped aureole made up of tectonic pieces of successively-formed metamorphic rocks that welded on to the base of an upward-moving and progressively-cooling peridotite slab.

Estimates of temperature of recrystallisation of the metapyroxenites were obtained using the garnet-pyroxene and garnet-amphibole exchange reactions as geothermometers. Estimates of pressure were obtained from assessments of the stability fields of the amphiboles, clinopyroxenes and garnets present and of the mineral assemblages in relation to published studies on the eclogite-granulite-amphibolite facies system.

The Late Yanshanian Orogeny (130-90 Ma) encompasses an important Mesozoic magmatic event in the crustal evolution of SE China. Products of post-orogenic magmatism, widely distributed in the eastern part of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces known as the Southeast Coast Magmatic Belt (SCMB), are dominated by large amounts of slightly Nb and Ta depleted, high-K calc-alkaline granites (I-type) and small amounts of strongly Ba, Sr, Eu, Ti and P depleted, metaluminous granites (A-type). 40Ar/39Ar dating from amphiboles suggests that emplacement of A-type granites mostly postdates (94-90 Ma) the intrusion of voluminous I-type granitoids (110-99 Ma). Using the Al-in-amphibole geobarometer, I-type suites were estimated to have been emplaced at shallow depths (5-7 km). Along with the fact that A-type granites are phyric or miarolitic in texture, it can be concluded that all these post-orogenic suites in the SCMB belong to shallow intrusives. They have also undergone a rapid cooling (higher than 100°C/Ma at T > 300 °C) as indicated by the thermochronology of hornblende, biotite and K-feldspar; therefore, generation of A-type granites from I-type magmas through fractional crystallisation would be a difficult process. Alternatively, their geochemical characteristics are attributed to partial melting in the residual lower crust under an elevated geothermal environment. On the other hand, I-type magmas are considered to be middle-crust-derived melts largely modified with mantle-derived melts that had been depleted with Nb and Ta by earlier tectonic processes. Such a tectonic environment is explained by the underplating of basaltic magmas, most probably due to lithospheric delamination taking place at c. 110 Ma, which marks the beginning of the postorogenic episode in this area. Numerical modelling for a heat source provided by the underplating of basaltic magma supports such a proposition.

Concern over the effects of eutrophication of Loch Leven led to an assessment of the phosphorus (P) loading and the contributions from runoff (from a catchment area of 145 km2), rain on the loch, roosting wildfowl, treated sewage effluent and P-rich industrial waste. Integrated programmes of flow gauging and nutrient analyses on twelve stream systems were carried out at eight-day intervals from January 1985 to February 1986. The paper concentrates on runoff and is restricted largely to total phosphorus (TP) loadings estimated from instantaneous flow and concentration data. The potential for deriving continuous loadings is discussed; examination of instantaneous and continuous discharge figures for a major inflow suggests that the present sampling regime has characterised its hydrological behaviour well. Nearly 90% of the water enters the loch in four streams of 0·1–1·0 m3 s−1 mean flow. The total input of water was high in 1985–134·4 × 106 m3 which is equivalent to a flushing rate of 2·6 (loch volumes); the effect on the loading results of the unusually wet study period is discussed.

Inflow concentrations of TP ranged from <10μg 1−1 to c. 4 mg 1−1; they generally increased with increasing flow but co-efficients of determination (r2 values) were only ≦0·57. Rating curves based on log load/log flow gave, for most waters, r2 values of 0·85, suggesting that load-flow, rather than concentration-flow models, will prove more favourable for predicting loads on non-sampling dates.

The total TP loading in runoff in 1985 was 9·4 tonnes, 38% of which was in soluble reactive form (SRP). Losses of P varied between sub-catchments, with 0·41–1·67 kg TP ha−1 yr−1 and typically <0·25 kg SRP ha−1 yr−1—representing only 5% of the annual agricultural applications of P. Initial calculations of inputs from sewage treatment works and industry suggest that these point-sources together contribute at least as much TP as in runoff, and twice the SRP in runoff. The significance of these findings for P control is discussed.

A brief history of research into the unusual laminated and spherulitic East Kirkton Limestone (Brigantian, Viséan) is given. It documents the paucity of fossil finds until 1984, when S. P. Wood discovered a previously unsuspected terrestrial biota. Some early finds, such as stromatolites, have since been overlooked, while others were misinterpreted, e.g. a ‘fish-bone’ collected before 1870 proves to be amphibian. A formal lithostratigraphic description is given of the three beds that comprise the c. 15 m sequence in East Kirkton Quarry: the East Kirkton Limestone, overlain by Little Cliff Shale and Geikie Tuff, the latter two being here formally named. Lithological descriptions and a unit-by-unit distribution of major elements of the biota are provided for a measured section comprising 88 units. This is based on bed-by-bed excavations carried out 1985-92, supplemented by nine boreholes. Two 3 m-thick massive limestones lenses are recorded from the quarry and a probable third was proved in a borehole. Brief reports are given on the ‘stromatolites’ (by M. R. Walter), bivalve molluscs (R. M. C. Eagar and R. B. Wilson), ostracods (J. Pollard) and gypsum pseudomorphs.

We present an overview of all known fossil scombroid fishes (Scombroidei, Perciformes) of the former USSR, many taxa of which are described in a language other than Russian for the first time. Also new is the application of a cladistic framework for these taxa. For each taxon, short taxonomic synopses with the most relevant characteristics (synapomorphies, meristic counts) are presented in a form useful for future cladistic analysis. As an exception, we present an extensive systematic description of the billfish †Hemingwaya sarissa Sytchevskaya & Prokofiev, because we disagree with earlier interpretations. The ‘gempylid’ †Hemithyrsites maicopicus Daniltshenko retains its generic name, which is considered the valid name of what is also known as Promethichthys Gill. A new tribe, †Eocoelopomini, is erected to contain the genera †Eocoelopoma Woodward, †Palaeothunnus Bannikov, and †Micrornatus Monsch. It is questioned whether species previously described as belonging to Thunnus South should be classified in that genus. A new species of tribe Scomberomorini, †Neocybium parvidentatum, is described from the Bartonian of W Kazakhstan. A specimen of †Auxides (questionably Maastrichthian, Iran), also reported here, possibly extends the radiation of †Auxides, and scombroids as a whole, further back in time. The fossil record of the Blochiidae is probably extended downwards to the Thanetian.

Ultramafic xenolith lithologies representative of the mantle beneath the Midland Valley of Scotland comprise magnesian peridotite (predominantly spinel lherzolite) and cumulate wehrlites and clinopyroxenites. The lherzolites are typical of the worldwide type I (Cr-diopside) xenolith suite; their textures and mineral chemistry record a complex thermal and deformational history. The petrographical and mineralogical features of the wehrlite-clinopyroxenite suite can be interpreted within the context of a sequence of cpx + ol ± sp cumulates that have undergone a protracted period of subsoli dus re-equilibration. Mineral compositions are similar to those of type II (Al-augite) ultramafic xenolith suites.

Although xenolith populations imply widespread lower crustal heterogeneity, meta-igneous basic granulites form a major component of this region beneath the Midland Valley. They are principally composed of pi + cpx + mt ± opx ± ap; a modal continuum exists from clinopyroxenite to anorthosite, skewed towards plagioclase-rich lithologies. Garnet is rare. Locally, evidence indicates re-equilibration from garnet granulite precursors. Rock densities range from c. 2·8 to c. 3·2 gm . cm−3, implying P-wave velocities in the range 6·5–7·5 km . s−1 consistent with the known seismic properties of the lower crustal layer beneath the Midland Valley. Phase relations are also consistent with equilibration of primary assemblages at depths of 20–35 km. Retrograde reactions indicate that portions of the crust may have had a complex pressure-temperature-time evolution. Major element compositions of the granulites are broadly basaltic, ranging from ne to hy normative with the mean corresponding to alkali olivine basalt. They are distinct, chemically, from basic granulites of the Lewisian complex of NW Scotland.

Non-marine Bathonian (Middle Jurassic) strata on the Isles of Eigg and Skye in Scotland have yielded fossil remains of eight hybodont shark taxa. Faunas from several horizons within the Lealt Shale and Valtos Formation on the Isle of Eigg include six species: Hybodus grossiconus, Hybodus sp. 1, Hybodus sp. 2, Lissodus leiodus, L. leiopleurus and Parvodus pattersoni. Large collections of teeth of L. leiodus and L. leiopleurus enable a better understanding of the dentitional patterns of the two species and their differential diagnosis. Surface-collecting from exposures of the Kilmalaug Formation on the Isle of Skye yielded hybodont teeth of two taxa: Hybodus sp. 3 and Acrodus caledonicus sp. nov. The occurrence of Acrodus in the Bathonian of Scotland is one of the youngest known occurrences of this genus, and the only non-marine record in the European Jurassic. Collectively, the hybodont assemblages from the Scottish Bathonian provide evidence that non-marine faunas of the group were specifically diverse in the Middle Jurassic.
