Previously described and new specimens of the anthracosaur Silvanerpeton miripedes from the Scottish Viséan of East Kirkton yield important new data which allow us to provide a more complete reconstruction of the skull roof, palate, braincase and lower jaw. A stout sacral rib and an incompletely ossified tarsus with a subquadrangular intermedium are also recorded for the first time. A remarkably well preserved humerus in extensor view shows similarities with humeri of immature specimens of the embolomere Proterogyrinus. A new cladistic analysis, built from combining characters used in two recent matrices, places Silvanerpeton in a basal position relative to embolomeres and more derived stem amniotes. Data from Silvanerpeton inform character polarity near the base of the amniote total group. We discuss some morphofunctional implications of character changes at the root of total group amniotes, acquisition of terrestrial habits, and patterns of early disparity in this clade.

Material of a coccosteid fish, from various localities in Caithness, is described as Dickosteus threiplandi n.g., n.sp. The fish has previously been confused with Coccosteus cuspidatus Miller ex Ag. ( = Coccosteus decipiens Ag.). A diagnosis of this new form is given and comparisons made with Coccosteus show that it is quite distinct. Coccosteus fletti Watson is also redescribed and referred to the new genus Watsonosteus. The phylogenetic relations and stratigraphical distribution of these two genera are considered, and it is shown that Dickosteus occurs in Caithness in the Thurso Flagstone Group above the Achanarras horizon, apparently replacing Coccosteus, and has a similar range in Orkney. Watsonosteus is characteristic of the Eday Flags. The stratigraphy of the Thurso Flagstone Group is critically reviewed and compared with the Orkney succession; the Ackergill Beds are shown to be the probable lateral equivalents of the Mey Beds, and the consequences of this are examined.

The first of this series of papers, that on the “Fossil Plants collected during the sinking of the shaft of the Hamstead Colliery, Great Barr, near Birmingham,” was published in 1888, and the second, dealing with the “Fossil Flora of the Coal Field of the Potteries,” in 1891.

Since that date the North Staffordshire Coal Field has been re-surveyed by members of the Geological Survey, and the result of this re-examination of the geology of the Potteries Coal Field was the classification of the strata into several well-defined groups.

The upper half of the Archerbeck Borehole contains a continuous Mississippian succession from the late Asbian (late Viséan) to the Pendleian (early Serpukhovian), with numerous limestone horizons. The borehole sequence lies within the Solway Basin (western end of the Northumberland Trough) and bridges the successions between the Midland Valley of Scotland and the Pennines (northern England). The rich foraminiferal and algal assemblages are compared to those described by previous authors, and genera as well as species are updated as far as is possible. In addition, some other overlooked or underestimated taxa have been identified and illustrated, which improve notably the biostratigraphic resolution of the Archerbeck Borehole succession. Within the abundant foraminiferal assemblages can be highlighted the richness and diversity of representatives of the family Archaediscidae. In general, the succession developed in the Archerbeck Borehole is closely comparable with that in the Alston Block of northern England. The Asbian/Brigantian transition mimics that observed in the Janny Wood boundary stratotype section, with clear late Asbian horizons (lower part of the Archerbeck Beds), transitional beds (middle and upper parts of the Archerbeck Beds), and Brigantian limestones (from the Cornet Limestone upwards). The base of the early Brigantian is placed at the base of the Cornet Limestone (equivalent to the Lower Peghorn Limestone in the Alston Block). The base of the late Brigantian is placed at the base of the Gastropod Limestone (equivalent to the Scar Limestone Member in northern England), and the base of the Pendleian is repositioned at the base of the Under Limestone (equivalent to the Four Fathom Limestone Member in northern England). Throughout, the borehole, protista and microfloral elements are abundant, which allows the recognition of Assemblages 4 to 10, previously recognised in northern England and the Midland Valley of Scotland. Furthermore, other local assemblages are recognised and related to palaeoecological controls, although they do not represent any improvement in biostratigraphical resolution.

The trilobite fauna of the basal Didymograptus superstes Mudstones (Nemagraptus gracilis zone) at Aldons Quarry is described. The fauna is large, consisting of 68 species, of which 12 are new, belonging to 47 genera. The fauna bears a much closer resemblance to that of the Albany mudstones than to that of the platy upper Stinchar Limestone: this is attributed to environmental control. The strong North American stamp of Barr Group faunas is at a maximum: Stenoblepharum, Raymondella, Chomatopyge and Miraspis appear for the first time in the Girvan District.

The results are presented of a detailed petrological reconnaissance of a group of picritic minor intrusions in the Hebrides. A substantial amount of new factual data is subjected to a unified treatment as a basis for reference and discussion. Olivine phenocrysts are not appreciably zoned and there is no evidence that they have a reaction relation with the liquid represented by the groundmass. Variations in the size and amount of olivine in individual intrusions are examined in detail and attributed to composite intrusion of differentiated material. A distinctive non-porphyritic facies found in several sills and in one dyke is chemically analyzed. Four analyses from widely separated localities establish this facies as a remarkably invariant, eucritic rock-type. The composition of the groundmass of the picritic rocks is variable and there is no evidence whatever of the participation of basaltic magma in their formation. Although no attempt is made to explain the new data in detail, a comprehensive working hypothesis is formulated. The origin of such picritic intrusions is believed to be due to selective fusion of pre-existing ultrabasic rock. Liquid more basic than normal basalt magmas can be formed by this process. Some re-precipitation of olivine may have preceded final emplacement of a magnesia-rich liquid which contained xenocrysts, mainly of olivine, from the source rock.

I am indebted to the kindness of Professor Ramsay, Director-General, and of Professor Geikie, Director of the Scottish Branch of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, for the privilege of examining and describing a remarkable collection of fossil fish-remains from the Lower Carboniferous rocks (Calciferous Sandstone Series) of Eskdale and Liddesdale. Most of the specimens were collected by Mr Arthur Macconochie, one of the collectors attached to the Scottish Geological Survey; and Mr Walter Park of Brooklyn Cottage, Langholm, has also willingly co-operated in the search, so far as the district of Eskdale is concerned. I have myself also had the pleasure of twice visiting Eskdale, along with Mr Macconochie and Mr B. N. Peach, and on these occasions I obtained a few specimens for my own collection.

There are a number of gaps which exist in our knowledge of the temperature changes which occur in fresh-water lakes. The broad lines on which the changes occur are fairly well known, but on almost every point there is a lack of detailed knowledge, and every investigation shows new problems requiring attack. One of the most interesting of these problems is the causation of the temperature seiche, and the effect of varying meteorological conditions. The problem is a difficult one, as the factors to be taken into consideration are so numerous, and the data from which to form conclusions are difficult to procure. We must first obtain an accurate knowledge of the changes which are occurring in the body of water under consideration—not only at one point but at all points, and this necessitates observations at frequent intervals of time, at numerous depths, made from several points on the surface of the loch. As yet there are no satisfactory self-recording instruments by means of which we can record the temperature of water at a considerable depth below the surface, and recourse must be had to the reading of mercury thermometers.

A new crustacean, Castracollis wilsonae is described from a loose block of the Early Devonian Rhynie chert, found in the vicinity of Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It differs markedly from Lepidocaris rhyniensis, Scourfield 1926, the only other crustacean found in the Rhynie chert.

The material comprises complete individuals up to 8 mm long and fragmentary remains. The head is normally damaged and detached from the body, and damage to the anterior of the trunk suggests the specimens are exuviae. The head appears domed with a labrum, robust mandibles, and long biramous antennae. A few specimens exhibit a probable detached cephalo-thoracicshield. The trunk is multi-segmented, comprising similar ring-like somites. The thorax variably comprises up to 26 segments. The anterior 11 segments possess similar long, phyllopodous appendages, the remainder variably possess 10 to 15 phyllopodous appendages with a disposition of one per somite. The abdomen comprises up to 28 apodous segments. The posterior of the body comprises a telson with two furcal rami.

The crustacean is most probably a calmanostracan branchiopod. It occurs associated with Lepidocaris, charophytes, cyanobacteria and coprolites within a ‘clotted’ chert texture, indicating subaqueous deposition, most probably in a temporary freshwater pool in an area of surficial hydrothermal activity.

A Histological investigation has been made of growth and repair of periostracum in Mytilus edulis. Physical rather than chemical differences in the processes of secretion can account for the variations in the structure of periostracum which appear during normal growth and in that which follows damage. Amœbocytes take part in the production of periostracum by supplying material for the secretory cells. Reasons for the presence of other granular cells near the site of secretion are also suggested. The periostracum is secreted solely by the epithelium of the inner surface of the outer mantle fold, although initially it adheres to the epithelium of a process of the middle fold. Consideration of the nature of the connection of the periostracum with its retractor muscles leads to the hypothesis that the cells of both epithelia move with the periostracum towards the mantle edge. The tissue where the two epithelia meet appears to be meristematic.

Metamorphosed abyssal ocean-floor tholeiitiic rocks, little affected by crustal contamination and probably formed at a spreading ridge, occur as a dyke complex in banded gabbros with oceanic affinities and as small tectonic lenses in serpentinised peridotite. Igneous textures and mineral assemblages have been partly or completely replaced in both dykes and gabbros. Metamorphic development of clinopyroxene and very Ti-rich hornblende at 900-1000°C was followed by a low temperature actinolite-chlorite assemblage and then by pectolite-bearing veins. Geochemical variations resulting from magmatic and metasomatic processes have been distinguished and plots of major and trace elements used to establish tectonic environment. The very high temperature metamorphic mineral growth associated with beerbachite formation indicates that the dyke rocks were in a high heat-flow environment for a considerable time, presumably in the vicinity of a spreading ridge. Obduction of a very hot slab of oceanic lithosphere accounts for the superimposed mineral assemblages.

Spatially associated pillow lavas have been affected by crustal contamination and are not comagmatic with the dykes. There are petrochemical characters indicating that some of the lavas are ocean-floor basalts. For other lavas, features suggesting emplacement in a continental or an island-arc environment could also be consistent with development in a marginal basin. However, there is so much variation in composition of pillows from margin to centre, from small to large and from metasomatic activity, that their compositional fields cannot be used for discrimination of basaltic type with the same confidence as for the dykes. Accordingly, it is suggested that the petrochemistry of sheeted dyke complexes, rather than of pillow lavas, be used for this purpose in the study of ophiolites.

All trilobites known from the lower and upper Balclatchie and lower Ardwell groups of the Girvan district are listed and frequencies recorded. Eight new species are described, a number of generic assignments are new, and hitherto undescribed parts are illustrated. Of the 60 named species, 19 occur in the lower and upper Balclatchie and lower Ardwell groups; the upper Balclatchie Group yields the largest number of species. The assemblage is generally indicative of outer shelf conditions of deposition; a deeper water association at certain Balclatchie Group localities consists of 5 species identical with, or closely related to, species from the Liberty Hall facies of the lower Edinburg Formation of Virginia, U.S.A. This deeper water element constitutes a significantly larger proportion of the trilobite assemblages at certain localities than it does at others. A further 8 species from the Balclatchie Group are allied to lower Edinburg Formation forms, thus confirming the evidence of the brachiopods regarding the strong North American affinities of the fauna. The Balclatchie conglomerate is considered to be the result of a catastrophic event accompanied by slumping near the shelf edge causing the instantaneous entombment of the fauna.

The material for this work was that collected and prepared by Professor J. Graham Kerr in the Chaco (Lepidosiren), and by Budgett from the Gambia (Protopterus). The process of development follows nearly the same course in the two genera, and where differences occur they are mainly such as are to be expected from a comparison of the adult skulls. While the series of stages of Lepidosiren left no unfilled gaps, the material was scantier in the case of Protopterus. Except where otherwise stated, the detailed descriptions were worked out in Lepidosiren, but whenever I was unable to verify that the process was substantially the same in the other genus, the fact has been mentioned. The stages are numbered in correspondence with the stages figured by Graham Kerr (Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc, B., vol. cxcii.). The Protopterus stages are numbered the same as the corresponding ones in the other genus. As far as possible, the nomenclature adopted by Gaupp* has been adhered to.

Leucogranites are typical products of collisional orogenies. They are found in orogenic terranes of different ages, including the Proterozoic Trans-Hudson orogen, as exemplified in the Black Hills, South Dakota, and the Appalachian orogen in Maine, both in the USA, and the ongoing Himalayan orogen. Characteristics of these collisional leucogranites show that they were derived from predominantly pelitic sources at the veining stages of deformation and metamorphism in upper plates of thickened crusts. Once generated, the leucogranite magmas ascended as dykes and were emplaced within shallower parts of their source sequences. In these orogenic belts, there was a strong connection between deformation, metamorphism and granite generation. However, the heat sources needed for partial melting of the source rocks remain controversial. Lack of evidence for significant intrusion of mafic magmas necessary to cause melting of upper plate source rocks suggests that leucogranite generation in collisional orogens is mainly a crustal process.

The present authors evaluate five types of thermal models which have previously been proposed for generating leucogranites in collisional orogens. The first, a thickened crust with exponentially decaying distribution of heat-producing radioactive isotopes with depth, has been shown to be insufficient for heating the upper crust to melting conditions. Four other models capable of raising the crustal temperatures sufficiently to initiate partial melting of metapelites in thickened crust include: (1) thick sequences of sedimentary rocks with high amounts of internal radioactive heat production; (2) decompression melting; (3) thinning of mantle lithosphere; and (4) shear-heating. The authors show that, for reasonable boundary conditions, shear-heating along crustal-scale shear zones is the most viable process to induce melting in upper plates of collisional orogens where pelitic source lithologies are usually located. The shear-heating model directly links partial melting to the deformation and metamorphism that typically precede leucogranite genera

Earliest Silurian (basal Llandovery) brachiopod faunas are surveyed and listed from around the globe, and divided between Lower Rhuddanian and Upper Rhuddanian occurrences. 60 genera are known from the Lower Rhuddanian within 20 superfamilies and there are 87 genera in 25 superfamilies in the Upper Rhuddanian. The 29 areas surveyed span the globe, both latitudinally and longitudinally. Only six superfamilies are Lazarus taxa which are known both from the Ordovician and Middle Llandovery (Aeronian) and later rocks but have not been recorded from the Rhuddanian. These are surprising results, since many previous studies have inferred that the Rhuddanian was a time of very sparse faunas. The global warming that followed the latest Ordovician (Hirnantian) ice age did not proceed quickly, with an ice-cap probably present through at least the Llandovery. There is a marked absence of Lower Rhuddanian bioherms even at low palaeolatitudes; however, the ecological recovery rate was far faster than that following the end-Permian mass extinction event. The partitioning of the Rhuddanian shelf faunas into well-defined benthic assemblages progressed slowly over the interval.

Examination of living embryos has shown that the heart is a functionally active organ from a very early stage of its development. At all periods of life the result of the functional activity is in essentials the same, viz. the propulsion of the blood in a definite direction through the heart into the vessels arising from it; but the mechanism for effecting this propulsion undergoes profound alterations, and the heart becomes transformed from a simple continuous tube, destitute of valves, whose walls contract in a rhythmic peristaltic wave, into a complex four-chambered organ, divided into right and left portions, which are ultimately completely separated from one another, possessing valves, and contracting not in a peristaltic wave but in alternating consecutive contractions of the atria and ventricles of the right and left sides simultaneously. Coincidently with the changes in the heart itself, profound alterations occur in the vessels leading to and from the heart. In this combination of simultaneous development and functional activity the heart differs from the other organs of the body, and hence its development presents special problems involving the function as well as the structure of the different parts. Our knowledge of the development of the heart in man cannot yet be said to be complete.

Pentastomida, tongue worms, are a taxon of about 130 species of parasites, living exclusively in the respiratory tracts of vertebrates. Three-dimensionally preserved Upper Cambrian larvae already demonstrate a high degree of adaptation to parasitism, striking morphological conservatism, and a high diversification by the Late Cambrian, thereby suggesting a likewise diversified host group. Not least due to their highly modified morphology, the systematic affinities of pentastomids remain controversial. The two major alternatives place the group as either close to branchiuran crustaceans or as stem-lineage derivatives of the Euarthropoda. To this set of Cambrian fossil representatives of the pentastomids we can add a new form from Lower Ordovician boundary beds from Sweden, most likely reworked from Upper Cambrian horizons. Based on this new species, named Aengapentastomum andresi gen. et sp. nov., and the available information about fossil and Recent pentastomids, we review the diverging ideas on the systematic position of this fully parasitic taxon.

Orthopyroxene- and kyanite-lineage eclogites are distinguished on the basis of silicate and carbonate petrography and chemistry. Different textural and chemical types of magnesite, dolomite and calcite can be satisfactorily attributed to one of the three sequential metamorphic stages of eclogite history at anhydrous eclogite facies, hydrous eclogite facies and amphibolite facies. The chronological sequence of development of magnesite, dolomite and calcite matches the carbonate sequence found experimentally in synthetic peridotite-CO2-H2O systems during decompression. Magnesite and dolomite show reasonably regular Fe/Mg distribution relationships with silicates.

A new geothermobarometer based upon is provisionally calibrated. It yields T estimates for given P very similar to those given by the geothermobarometer, e.g. 759–829°C at 20 kb and 803–894°C at 40 kb. P is tentatively estimated at 30±10, 23±6 and 10 ± 3 kb respectively for the three metamorphic stages.

Fluid conditions after equilibration during each stage were either low or fluid-absent, but not low . A unique quartz-magnesite-dolomite vein represents an influx of CO2 in the P-T regime of instability of CO2 + pyroxene. Tectonic emplacement by deep-level obduction of diverse foreign source materials remains the petrogenetic model which best fits the data for these eclogites.

The main purpose of the following investigation is to improve the existing Approximate Theory of Beams by bringing it into closer relationship than has hitherto been done with exact solutions of the fundamental differential equations of equilibrium. In its aim, method, and results the paper closely resembles one already published in these Transactions on the corresponding Theory for Plates (vol. xli., 1904). It is less comprehensive than the latter paper, as it deals only with a beam of circular section; but the analysis is of such a nature that the chief results can be extended almost immediately to a beam of any form of section, on the assumption merely of certain Existence Theorems.

Conchyliocarida, from the Jurassic of France, have a conch-like carapace enclosing the whole body. The number of their somites, identified by the visible appendages, excludes them from Malacostraca. Caridean-like characters, including the large lamellar gills, bring them nearer to Malacostraca, end exclude them from other Classes. Their large functional compound eyes and the morphology of their limbs suggest a benthic life and predatory behaviour.

Conchyliocarida are represented by several forms at La Voulte sur Rhône, which are compared and contrasted to related forms elsewhere.
