One of the most effective ways of winning an argument is to show that your opponent has begged the question. If you are sufficiently skilful in asking him leading questions and have a good sense of timing you can usually succeed in stripping him to his bare principles, with no ascertainable means for their support. That such a tactic of debate should be so effective suggests that it is more than just a ploy. Indeed some philosophers would say that it takes advantage of a characteristic which is inherent in the nature of argument itself, for all arguments must be question-begging. However, few would voice this conviction publicly—for fear of being accused of begging the question.

The purpose of this paper is to raise several questions common to the philosophy of history and to discuss the work of Ibn Khaldūn in relation to them. The paper is accordingly divided into four parts. In the first, the questions are identified; in the second, the relevant aspect of Ibn Khaldūn's writing is introduced; in the third, the questions are discussed with reference to Ibn Khaldūn, and in the fourth an attempt is made to show how the questions might be answered.

Ses conclusions sont nettes, et il faudra bien que l'on prenne position à leur égard. Il nous semble pourtant que l'on pourrait discerner dans ses propos deux conclusions distinctes, et qu'il ne serait dès lors pas impossible d'en accepter l'une sans pour autant souscrire à l'autre. La séparation des deux thèmes devrait en tout cas clarifier le problème, et permettre une assimilation plus aisée du contenu complexe et tourmenté de cette œuvre profondément engagée.

Il existe une différence fondamentale entre la science et la philosophic, différence que marque la frontière mobile entre la spéculation et la vérification (p. 2). Telle est la thèse dont tout l'ouvrage de M. Piaget veut se présenter comme la défense et l'illustration.

L'ouvrage de Jean Piaget: Sagesse et illusions de laphilosophie n'a point fini de faire parler de lui et de donner à penser. La pierre que le maître genevois a lancée dans le lac des Cygnes, a provoqué un ébranlement salutaire qui remet en question, non seulement un mode contemporain de philosophic mais la philosophic elle même. Substance et modes sont à nouveau soumis à cette interrogation salutaire qui, périodiquement, confronte la philosophie au problème crucial de sa propre possibilityé. À ce titre, même s'il dût être le seul (ce qui n'est point le cas), ce petit livre mériterait la reconnaissance des intéressés.

Recently Wesley Salmon has argued that a certain class of confirmation functions (C-functions) must be rejected for yielding contradictions. The C-functions involved happen to be the kind ingeniously constructed and employed most notably by Professor Carnap. More recently Keith Lehrer has argued that these C-functions may be salvaged by the adoption of a rule that eliminates certain languages. In the paragraphs that follow, it will be shown that Salmon's reply to the sort of program suggested by Lehrer is not at all convincing and that Lehrer's defence of his suggested rule of greater completeness is unacceptable.

What fourth dimension of a four-dimensional space-time continuum. I propose to develop some of the commonly held implications of this view, and to show that they involve a contradiction. Hence whatever time is, it cannot be the thing corresponding to this particular theory.

McCall's argument has two stages. In the first (which I shall call ‘Stage One’), the hypothesis that someone has both perfect memory and perfect foreknowledge is shown to generate an infinite regress, and this is taken to establish the absurdity of that hypothesis; in the second (‘Stage Two’), this absurdity is made the basis of a proof that time is asymmetrical.

In a recent issue of Dialogue, John O. Nelson corrects what appears to be an inexplicable error in the Haldane-Ross edition of Descartes' Meditations. At a “very crucial place,” he tells us, the translation “fails to do justice to Descartes' text.”
