A colouring of a graph G is called distinguishing if its stabilizer in Aut G is trivial. It has been conjectured that, if every automorphism of a locally finite graph moves infinitely many vertices, then there is a distinguishing 2-colouring. We study properties of random 2-colourings of locally finite graphs and show that the stabilizer of such a colouring is almost surely nowhere dense in Aut G and a null set with respect to the Haar measure on the automorphism group. We also investigate random 2-colourings in several classes of locally finite graphs where the existence of a distinguishing 2-colouring has already been established. It turns out that in all of these cases a random 2-colouring is almost surely distinguishing.

Complete disorder is impossible – this theme of Ramsey Theory, as stated by Theodore S. Motzkin, was a guiding theme throughout Walter Deuber's scientific life.

Given a fixed graph H that embeds in a surface $\Sigma$ , what is the maximum number of copies of H in an n-vertex graph G that embeds in $\Sigma$ ? We show that the answer is $\Theta(n^{f(H)})$ , where f(H) is a graph invariant called the ‘flap-number’ of H, which is independent of $\Sigma$ . This simultaneously answers two open problems posed by Eppstein ((1993) J. Graph Theory17(3) 409–416.). The same proof also answers the question for minor-closed classes. That is, if H is a $K_{3,t}$ minor-free graph, then the maximum number of copies of H in an n-vertex $K_{3,t}$ minor-free graph G is $\Theta(n^{f'(H)})$ , where f′(H) is a graph invariant closely related to the flap-number of H. Finally, when H is a complete graph we give more precise answers.

We define and efficiently compute the canonical flow on a graph, which is a certain feasible solution for the concurrent flow problem and exhibits invariance under the action of the automorphism group of the graph. Using estimates for the congestion of our canonical flow, we derive lower bounds on the crossing number, bisection width, and the edge and vertex expansion of a graph in terms of sizes of the edge and vertex orbits and the average distance in the graph. We further exhibit classes of graphs for which our lower bounds are tight within a multiplicative constant. Also, in cartesian product graphs a concurrent flow is constructed in terms of the concurrent flows in the factors, and in this way lower bounds for the edge and vertex expansion of the power graphs are derived in terms of that of the original graph.

In this paper we investigate a partitioning problem, setting the existence problem for all group-divisible designs with first and second associates in which the blocks are 4-cycles.

Let {Av}v∈V be a finite collection of events and G = (V, E) be a chordal graph. Our main result – the chordal graph sieve – is a Bonferroni-type inequality where the selection of intersections in the estimates is determined by a chordal graph G. It interpolates between Boole's inequality (G empty) and the sieve formula (G complete). By varying G, several inequalities both well-known and new are obtained in a concise and unified way.

We consider the problem of enumerating d-irreducible maps, i.e., planar maps all of whose cycles have length at least d, and such that any cycle of length d is the boundary of a face of degree d. We develop two approaches in parallel: the natural approach via substitution, where these maps are obtained from general maps by a replacement of all d-cycles by elementary faces, and a bijective approach via slice decomposition, which consists in cutting the maps along shortest paths. Both lead to explicit expressions for the generating functions of d-irreducible maps with controlled face degrees, summarized in some elegant ‘pointing formula’. We provide an equivalent description of d-irreducible slices in terms of so-called d-oriented trees. We finally show that irreducible maps give rise to a hierarchy of discrete integrable equations which include equations encountered previously in the context of naturally embedded trees.

We show that in the game of angel and devil, played on the planar integer lattice, the angel of power 4 can evade the devil. This answers a question of Berlekamp, Conway and Guy. Independent proofs that work for the angel of power 2 have been given by Kloster and by Máthé.

The line graph G of a directed graph G has a vertex for every edge of G and an edge for every path of length 2 in G. In 1967, Knuth used the Matrix Tree Theorem to prove a formula for the number of spanning trees of G, and he asked for a bijective proof [6]. In this paper, we give a bijective proof of Knuth's formula. As a result of this proof, we find a bijection between binary de Bruijn sequences of degree n and binary sequences of length 2n−1. Finally, we determine the critical groups of all the Kautz graphs and de Bruijn graphs, generalizing a result of Levine [7].

We offer a unified approach to the theory of concave majorants of random walks, by providing a path transformation for a walk of finite length that leaves the law of the walk unchanged whilst providing complete information about the concave majorant. This leads to a description of a walk of random geometric length as a Poisson point process of excursions away from its concave majorant, which is then used to find a complete description of the concave majorant of a walk of infinite length. In the case where subsets of increments may have the same arithmetic mean, we investigate three nested compositions that naturally arise from our construction of the concave majorant.

The strong isometric dimension of a graph G is the least number k such that G isometrically embeds into the strong product of k paths. Using Sperner's theorem, the strong isometric dimension of the Hamming graphs K2 □ Kn is determined.

An n-vertex graph G is c-Ramsey if it contains neither a complete nor an empty induced subgraph of size greater than c log n. Erdős, Faudree and Sós conjectured that every c-Ramsey graph with n vertices contains Ω(n5/2) induced subgraphs, any two of which differ either in the number of vertices or in the number of edges, i.e., the number of distinct pairs (|V(H)|, |E(H)|), as H ranges over all induced subgraphs of G, is Ω(n5/2). We prove an Ω(n2.3693) lower bound.

We prove that the maximum degree Δn of a random series-parallel graph with n vertices satisfies Δn/logn → c in probability, and Δn ~ c logn for a computable constant c > 0. The same kind of result holds for 2-connected series-parallel graphs, for outerplanar graphs, and for 2-connected outerplanar graphs.

We show that the number of halving sets of a set of n points in ℝ4 is O(n4−1/18), improving the previous bound of [10] with a simpler (albeit similar) proof.

We show that a random graph studied by Ioffe and Levit is an example of an inhomogeneous random graph of the type studied by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan, which enables us to give a new, and perhaps more revealing, proof of their result on a phase transition.

A causal set is a countably infinite poset in which every element is above finitely many others; causal sets are exactly the posets that have a linear extension with the order-type of the natural numbers; we call such a linear extension a natural extension. We study probability measures on the set of natural extensions of a causal set, especially those measures having the property of order-invariance: if we condition on the set of the bottom k elements of the natural extension, each feasible ordering among these k elements is equally likely. We give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of an order-invariant measure on the set of natural extensions of a causal set.

In this work we suggest a new model for generating random satisfiable k-CNF formulas. To generate such formulas. randomly permute all possible clauses over the variables x1,. . .,xn, and starting from the empty formula, go over the clauses one by one, including each new clause as you go along if, after its addition, the formula remains satisfiable. We study the evolution of this process, namely the distribution over formulas obtained after scanning through the first m clauses (in the random permutation's order).

Random processes with conditioning on a certain property being respected are widely studied in the context of graph properties. This study was pioneered by Ruciński and Wormald in 1992 for graphs with a fixed degree sequence, and also by Erdős, Suen and Winkler in 1995 for triangle-free and bipartite graphs. Since then many other graph properties have been studied, such as planarity and H-freeness. Thus our model is a natural extension of this approach to the satisfiability setting.

Our main contribution is as follows. For m ≥ cn, c = c(k) a sufficiently large constant, we are able to characterize the structure of the solution space of a typical formula in this distribution. Specifically, we show that typically all satisfying assignments are essentially clustered in one cluster, and all but e−Ω(m/n)n of the variables take the same value in all satisfying assignments. We also describe a polynomial-time algorithm that finds w.h.p. a satisfying assignment for such formulas.

Let $G$ be a noncomplete $k$-connected graph such that the graphs obtained from contracting any edge in $G$ are not $k$-connected, and let $t(G)$ denote the number of triangles in $G$. Thomassen proved $t(G) \geq 1$, which was later improved by Mader to $t(G) \geq \frac{1}{3}|V(G)|$.

Here we show $t(G) \geq \frac{2}{3}|V(G)|$ (which is best possible in general).

Furthermore it is proved that, for $k \geq 4$, a $k$-connected graph without two disjoint triangles must contain an edge not contained in a triangle whose contraction yields a $k$-connected graph. As an application, for $k \geq 4$ every $k$-connected graph $G$ admits two disjoint induced cycles $C_1,C_2$ such that $G-V(C_1)$ and $G-V(C_2)$ are $(k-3)$-connected.

The following two conjectures arose in the work of Grimmett and Winkler, and Pemantle: the uniformly random forest F and the uniformly random connected subgraph C of a finite graph G have the edge-negative association property. In other words, for all distinct edges e and f of G, the probability that F (respectively, C) contains e conditioned on containing f is less than or equal to the probability that F (respectively, C) contains e. Grimmett and Winkler showed that the first conjecture is true for all simple graphs on 8 vertices and all graphs on 9 vertices with at most 18 edges. In this paper, we describe an infinite, nontrivial class of graphs and matroids for which a generalized version of both conjectures holds.

The inducibility of a graph H measures the maximum number of induced copies of H a large graph G can have. Generalizing this notion, we study how many induced subgraphs of fixed order k and size ℓ a large graph G on n vertices can have. Clearly, this number is $\left( {\matrix{n \cr k}}\right)$ for every n, k and $\ell \in \left\{ {0,\left( {\matrix{k \cr 2}} \right)}\right\}$. We conjecture that for every n, k and $0 \lt \ell \lt \left( {\matrix{k \cr 2}}\right)$ this number is at most $ (1/e + {o_k}(1)) {\left( {\matrix{n \cr k}} \right)}$. If true, this would be tight for ℓ ∈ {1, k − 1}.

In support of our ‘Edge-statistics Conjecture’, we prove that the corresponding density is bounded away from 1 by an absolute constant. Furthermore, for various ranges of the values of ℓ we establish stronger bounds. In particular, we prove that for ‘almost all’ pairs (k, ℓ) only a polynomially small fraction of the k-subsets of V(G) have exactly ℓ edges, and prove an upper bound of $ (1/2 + {o_k}(1)){\left( {\matrix{n \cr k}}\right)}$ for ℓ = 1.

Our proof methods involve probabilistic tools, such as anti-concentration results relying on fourth moment estimates and Brun’s sieve, as well as graph-theoretic and combinatorial arguments such as Zykov’s symmetrization, Sperner’s theorem and various counting techniques.
