Supported silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been used extensively as antibacterial agents in biomedicine, biotechnology, and environmental remediation. However, a facile and scalable method for preparing Ag NPs dispersed homogeneously on supports remains a challenge. In this study, a novel molten salt method was developed successfully to synthesize the supported, homogeneously dispersed Ag NPs on palygorskite. Abundant pores and ample surface hydroxyl groups of palygorskite served as anchoring sites, preventing the rapid growth, aggregation, and sintering of Ag NPs. Typically, palygorskite was mixed with AgNO3 (as a precursor) and NaNO3 (as a dispersant), and then the mixture was heated slowly. During the heating process, the AgNO3 decomposed gradually into Ag NPs and the molten NaNO3 with a high concentration of ions dispersed the newly formed Ag NPs. The Ag NPs were dispersed homogeneously on the palygorskite and had very small particle sizes (~5.8 nm) even for a significant loading amount (~9 wt.%). As antibacterial agents, the Ag/palygorskite nanocomposites showed enhanced antibacterial activity, compared with those synthesized without the introduction of molten NaNO3. In addition, the key effect of the surface hydroxyl groups of palygorskite on the characteristics of the loaded Ag and the corresponding antibacterial activity were also elucidated. As such, the present work provided a novel and facile strategy for the synthesis, without a chemical reductant or surfactant, of supported, highly dispersed Ag NPs on clay minerals and this could have potential in the scalable production and practical application of Ag-based antibacterial materials.

Lower Wham Brake is a cypress, rim-swamp artificially enclosed in 1950 as a 22 km2 industrial reservoir by the International Paper Company (IPC)-Bastrop Mill, for regulating downstream water quality. Sediment cores were examined by XRD to differentiate paper-mill effluent deposition from the underlying detrital sediments and by 210Pb decay spectroscopy to determine sediment accretion rates.

Anatase and kaolin from the IPC paper-mill effluent delineated a well-defined, anthropic, silty-clay, A horizon above a clay, 2Ag horizon. Anatase concentrations were no greater than 1.7% in the A horizon and was absent in the underlying 2Agl horizon. Kaolin deposition was significantly correlated to the A horizon by an average increase of 84% above the kaolinite detrital background. Pyrite was detected in the A horizon as a transformation mineral following sulfur reduction of the paper-mill effluent.

Five of the six sediment cores showed an inflection in the excess 210Pb activity profile consistent with a present-day reduction in sediment supply. The average modern sedimentation rate was 0.05 cm yr−1. Average sedimentation observed during historic accretion was 0.22 cm yr−1, about 4.4 times greater than the modern rate of accretion. Reduction in sediment accretion can be attributed to upstream levees completed in 1934 and loss of organic accumulation following the 1950 reservoir impoundment. However, radiometric dating could not precisely correlate the geochronology of kaolin/anatase introduction due to complex oxidation/reduction cycles concurrent with the modern accretion regime.

A series of chloro-alkylammonium montmorillonites was produced by cation exchange from Na+-montmorillonite. Gas chromatographic data were obtained for light hydrocarbons and certain oxides of nitrogen. Surface area and X-ray powder diffraction studies were made on each organo-clay, making possible differentiation between possible chromatographic pathways. Adsorption of the gas molecules on the silicate sheet was determined to be the dominant chromatographic pathway for all gases studied.

The physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of clays used in the ceramics industries are briefly outlined. Clays used include ball clays, fireclays, high-alumina clays of the diaspore and burley types, and three-layer types. The high temperature phases and bonding characteristics are briefly reviewed as are the uses of these various clays in the structural clay products, whitewares and refractories.

The importance of clays in the past for ceramics and, in particular, refractories is reviewed and evaluated for future importance.

The harm caused by mine tailings has become increasingly problematic in recent years, so efforts are needed to dispose of or reutilize them in environmentally friendly ways. The objective of the present study was to find out if the hydration properties of muscovite contained in mine tailings are suitable for it to be used as a pozzolan in cement, after undergoing mechanical activation. Aqueous suspensions of mechanically activated muscovite were blended with 10, 20, or 30 wt.% calcium oxide and then allowed to harden. The hardened paste samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The results revealed that the mechanically activated muscovite exhibited pozzolanic reaction activity in the alkaline environment provided by calcium oxide, and the activated muscovite possessed a capacity to react with calcium hydroxide to form hydration products. The calcium oxide content affected significantly the quantities and kinds of hydration products, non-evaporable water content, and the compressive strength development of the paste samples. The hydration products of the 10% calcium oxide-activated, mechanically activated muscovite pastes were Al-containing hydrated calcium silicate (C-A-S-H) gel, stratlingite, and, upon addition of 20% and 30% calcium oxide, Ca-Al hydrotalcite-like (Ht) phases. The present study was helpful in evaluating the hydration properties of the mechanically activated muscovite and also provided a research basis for evaluating the hydration properties of mine tailings containing muscovite after mechanical activation. The results provided a theoretical basis for muscovite-containing mine tailings to be used as a cement additive, and was conducive to the large-scale utilization of mine tailings.

Due to the wide range of uses of water-soluble polymers in commercial products, water contamination by polymers has become a serious environmental concern. Adsorption onto an acidic clay, obtained from Tsunagi mine, Niigata, Japan, of water-soluble polymers from aqueous solutions was investigated as a means of purifying water. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as a sample polymer in an attempt to find optimal conditions for extracting the greatest proportion of polymer from the aqueous solution. The adsorption isotherms at lower equilibrium concentrations were of type L, indicating a strong affinity between the acidic clay and PVP. A larger amount of PVP was adsorbed when a higher-molecularweight PVP (comparison between MWs of 160,000 and 10,000) was used. From the Langmuir equation, the adsorption capacity was calculated as 0.029 g/g clay for the adsorption of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) from an aqueous solution. The adsorption of PVP from a NaCl solution (simulated sea water) was also possible though the amount of adsorption was slightly less than from an aqueous solution. A polymer removal efficiency of >90% was achieved when 200 mg of the acidic clay was added to 50 mL of 0.001 wt.% PVP aqueous solution. The acidic clay was also used for adsorption of poly(ethylene glycol), poly(vinyl alcohol), and polyacrylamide from aqueous solutions.

Precise information on the location of charge in clay minerals and their charge density in smectite-dominant soils is rare. The present study was undertaken with three benchmark Vertisols to establish the relationship between the clay cation exchange capacity (CEC), charge density, as well as the location of charge in smectitic soil clay minerals and their relationship with potassium (K) fixation and release. Potassium fractions and their threshold levels in the Vertisols were determined by standard methods. Soils were segregated into silt, total clay and fine clay fractions for X-ray diffraction analysis and fine clay fractions were used to determine the CEC using standard methods. The Hofmann-Klemen effect (HK) and modified Greene-Kelly test was done with the fine clay to determine the CEC of the tetrahedral sheet. Subsequently, the CEC of the octahedral sheet was calculated as the difference between total CEC and the tetrahedral CEC. The results showed that ~60–64% of the total CEC is attributed to the tetrahedral layers. The tetrahedral CEC that is proportional to the tetrahedral charge density was significant and negatively correlated with K release threshold values and all fractions of K. The tetrahedral CEC contributed more toward the K fixation and release than the octahedral CEC. The study shows that the dominant presence of high-charge smectites in the fine clay fractions of these Vertisols contributed to the tetrahedral CEC and consequently to the charge density of these soils, which implied a tendency to fix K easily and release it with greater difficulty compared to soils with low-charge smectites.

Reducing the environmental footprint of cement is an absolute necessity to meet the commitments of COP26 and to limit global warming to + 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial level. In this context, particular interest has developed in recent years in the use of calcined clays as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Due to their high reactivity, large reserves and homogeneous distribution on the earth's surface, calcined clays represent a viable alternative to conventional SCMs. Clay minerals are highly variable and numerous, each with their own characteristics. As a result, not all of them have potential for use as SCMs. The present paper investigated the use of palygorskite (a clay that has been relatively poorly studied) as an SCM. Two commercial palygorskites of different grades were selected and their calcination was studied by X-ray diffraction and pozzolanic activity tests. Blended cements incorporating 20% of each calcined palygorskite were prepared and the mechanical performance and resistivity of the mortars measured. The results show that the optimum calcination temperature is 800°C (allowing complete amorphization of the clay fraction and the highest pozzolanic reactivity) for both clays. Mortars made with 80% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) blended with 20% of 800°C calcined palygorskite allowed a significant increase in compressive strength and electrical resistivity compared to the reference (100% OPC). The clay sample with palygorskite as the dominant mineral exhibited the greatest pozzolanic reactivity and mechanical performance in cementitious systems, confirming that palygorskite is a clay mineral with a significant potential for a use as a SCM. The second sample with smaller palygorskite content also allowed a significant increase in mechanical performance. This demonstrated that it is not necessary to use high-purity samples and enhances the value of this type of material.

Strong gas-mineral interactions or slow adsorption kinetics require a molecular-level understanding of both adsorption and diffusion for these interactions to be properly described in transport models. In this combined molecular simulation and experimental study, noble gas adsorption and mobility is investigated in two naturally abundant zeolites whose pores are similar in size (clinoptilolite) and greater than (mordenite) the gas diameters. Simulated adsorption isotherms obtained from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations indicate that both zeolites can accommodate even the largest gas (Rn). However, gas mobility in clinoptilolite is significantly hindered at pore-limiting window sites, as seen from molecular dynamics simulations in both bulk and slab zeolite models. Experimental gas adsorption isotherms for clinoptilolite confirm the presence of a kinetic barrier to Xe uptake, resulting in the unusual property of reverse Kr/Xe selectivity. Finally, a kinetic model is used to fit the simulated gas loading profiles, allowing a comparison of trends in gas diffusivity in the zeolite pores.

Addition of HCl, H2SO4, and H3PO4 to montmorillonite clay and a montmorillonitic soil had little effect on the liquid limit of these materials over a wide range of concentrations. The liquid limit of a kaolinitic soil clay was reduced markedly by both HCl and H2SO4, whereas H3PO4 decreased the liquid limit value at lower concentrations and increased it at higher ones. These results are discussed in light of the charge variability and of anion retention by the kaolinitic soil.

The particle size distribution, total and exchangeable Mg, and mineralogical compositions were determined on eight well-drained, noncultivated subsoils from Pennsylvania. No correlation was found between the clay content and total Mg (r =.29), or between the clay content and exchangeable Mg (r =.35). Serpentine, talc, and hypersthene were found in the very fine sand and silt fractions of soils having relatively high exchangeable Mg. Mica and 14-Å clay minerals were the only Mg-bearing minerals noted in the same fractions of soils having relatively low exchangeable Mg. Of the Mg-bearing clay minerals found in the clay fractions (smectite, vermiculite, chlorite, illite, and interstratified chlorite/vermiculite), only smectite decreased as the exchangeable Mg in the soils decreased. Two distinctly different distribution patterns of Mg were found for soils having relatively high and low exchangeable Mg. The former soils showed a decreasing Mg content as the particle size decreased, and the latter soils showed the opposite. Exchangeable Mg correlated significantly with the amount of Mg in whole soil, sand, and silt, but not with the amount of Mg in the clay, an indication that sand and silt but not clay were the important sources of exchangeable Mg in these soils.

Kaolinites found in soils generally give poorer thermograms than commercial kaolins. When run under dynamic steam atmospheres up to 90 psi, the endothermic peaks are sharpened and moved upward; the exotherm is made less intense and moved downward. Because of the effects observed, the method promises to be of interest in theoretical studies of hydrates and hydroxides.

Boron and lithium were analyzed in three nanometer-sized (<20, 20-50 and 50-100 nm) separates of two Santonian (85.8-83.5 Ma) bentonite samples collected closely in the Campos Basin along the southeastern Atlantic coast (Brazil). The B and Li data give various trends that suggest varied crystallization conditions for separates that consist of overwhelming smectite with less than 9% illitic layers. The δ11B of the few illitic tetrahedral sites from one of the samples remains quite constant, while its contents are strictly correlated with those of K, which suggests that illitization proceeded by interaction with pore fluids of the host sediments that supplied the K. In the second sample, the δ11B of the illite layers from the two coarser fractions is indicative of an early volcanic origin, while the smaller size fraction also interacted with sedimentary fluids. Favored by octahedral substitutions of the smectite layers, the δ7Li is more strictly regulated by a volcanic link. In turn, the information of the B and Li isotopic compositions and contents from studied mixed-layers suggests a various origin for the few illite layers of the smectite-rich I-S that contain more B than the smectite layers that host more Li. The difference appears to be sample-site and crystal-size dependent, fueled by pore fluids of the hosting turbidites.

The elimination of Pb2+ and recovery of lead metal during the treatment of industrial sewage is an important research topic. Montmorillonite (Mnt) is a promising material in this regard. The purpose of the present study was to improve the Pb2+ adsorption ability of Na-containing Mnt (Na-Mnt) by pillaring titania (anatase) into its interlayer spaces using a sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The ratio of Ti to Mnt affected the crystal phase of titania-pillared Na-Mnt (Ti-Mnt), and changed the interlayer spacing of the (001) plane of Ti-Mnt and the growth of anatase. The Pb2+-adsorption capabilities of Ti-Mnt were tested using an aqueous solution of lead nitrate as a wastewater model. The Ti-Mnt prepared adsorbed >99.99% of the Pb2+; leached and activated Ti-Mnt adsorbed >95.7% of the Pb2+, indicating that Ti-Mnt could be recycled effectively. Furthermore, the Pb2+-adsorption capability of Ti- Mnt was related to the interlayer spacing of Mnt, the distribution of anatase particles pillared in Mnt, and the specific surface area, especially with respect to the relationship between the anatase particles and the interlayer spacing of the (001) plane.

X-ray intensity ratios of Si/Al, Si/Fe, and Al/Fe in micron-sized particles of geochemical standards were found to vary linearly with the composition ratio. The same linear relationship was found for samples of the clay minerals kaolinite and illite.
