New experimental data with respect to the solubility of natural and synthesized magadiite at elevated temperatures and in alkaline solutions are presented. The results show that the solubility of magadiite increases according to the expression ln(Kmag) = −8146·T(K)−1 − 5.71 from 20 to 100°C ($(\Delta G_{\text{R}}^0({\text{K}}_{\text{mag}})=19.6\pm 0.3$ and $\Delta H_{\text{R}}^0({\text{K}}_{\text{mag}})=16.2\pm 0.4\text{kcal}{\text{mol}}^{-1}$). The experimental results and the related data from the literature suggest that the formation of magadiite may be favored by a decrease of temperature and pH (pH >9) as well by large amounts of Na+ ions and low ionic strength. These effects are related to the value of $\Delta H_{\text{R}}^0({\text{K}}_{\text{mag}})$, the distribution of dissolved silica species, the stoichiometry of magadiite, and the occurrence of negatively-charged species, respectively.

A version of thermoporometry dedicated to analyzing the pore network of expanding clays is proposed here. The blurred, wide Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) peak obtained upon the melting of a frozen clay sample is processed by means of a deconvolution analysis based on searching for such a temperature distribution of “pulse-like heat events” which, convolved with the apparatus function, gives a minimal deviation from the observed heat flux function, i.e. the calorimetric signal. As a result, a sharp thermogram was obtained which can be transformed easily into the pore-size distribution curve. Results obtained for samples of two Clay Minerals Society Source Clays (montmorillonites SWy-2 from Wyoming and STx-1b from Texas) at different water contents indicate a greater resolution and sensitivity than that achieved by classical thermoporometry using the unprocessed DSC signal. Phenomena corresponding to the evolution of the pore network as a function of the water content have been detected in samples with large water contents subjected to free drying prior to the experiments.

The alignment of phyllosilicates in clays has received a lot of attention because it is a major cause of seismic anisotropy in the Earth’s crust. Thus far, all attention has been on shales where the orientation pattern has been attributed to compaction and observed to increase with burial depth and diagenetic processes. Here, for the first time, the same methods that were developed to quantify shale preferred orientation were applied to clays forming in surface environments, a seasonal streambed in Death Valley, California; a mudpool from mud volcanoes in Imperial Valley, California, close to the Salton Sea; and a glacial lake from Val Albigna in the Swiss Alps. Preferred orientation was analyzed quantitatively with high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. All three samples showed strong alignment of phyllosilicates with (001) pole figure maxima 2–4 multiples of a random distribution, comparable to shales, and indicating that significant preferred orientation can be produced at surface conditions. The original alignment during sedimentation may be an important factor for the final microstructure in many shales.

Volatiles formed on heating clay minerals contain a variety of cations and anions and are highly reactive. Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer analysis of long-chain n-alkanes exposed to such volatiles showed that some decomposition occurred even <250°C. Reactions with anions donated by the volatiles led to compounds containing atoms other than C and H, e.g., Cl. The products obtained from n-alkanes heated in a stream of clay volatiles to 500°C resembled those produced by corresponding alkane-clay mixtures heated to 250°C. At higher temperatures contact between the alkanes and montmorillonite or halloysite led to changes in the assemblages formed, whereas kaolinite or sepiolite had no effect. Thus, the first reactions that occurred when clays were heated with n-alkanes were apparently induced by the volatiles; at higher temperatures catalysis due to direct contact came into play with some of the clay minerals.

Infrared spectra (4000-1200 cm-1) were obtained for several homoionic montmorillonite films on which tetramethylene sulfoxide (TMSO) or thiolane were adsorbed at various temperatures and for different periods of exposure. The spectra indicate that the Na-, H-, and natural montmorillonite complexes contain a physically adsorbed species, whereas transition metal-montmorillonite complexes contain both physically adsorbed and metal-complexed species in their interlamellar spaces. Apparently, thiolane adsorbed on most montmorillonites undergoes oxidation to TMSO in an air atmosphere. Consistent with the mechanism proposed earlier for aqueous solutions, the rate of sulfoxide formation increases by increasing the pH of the suspensions from which the clay films were deposited or by increasing the concentration of the water molecules in the interlamellar spaces. The infrared spectra of γ-thiolactone adsorbed on Co-montmorillonites suggest that sulfoxide-type molecules are formed which chelate to the Co ions in the interlamellar spaces.

Chrome chlorite associated with the chromite deposits of the Nuggihalli schist belt has been investigated by detailed mineralogical, chemical, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal and i.r. spectral analyses. Following the nomenclature of Lapham (1958) it is inferred that the chromium of the chrome chlorite is in the tetrahedral position and therefore the mineral is kotschubeite and not kaemmererite as suggested by earlier workers.

The formation of siliceous phases in montmorillonites at temperatures up to 1500°C has been studied by high temperature continuous x-ray diffraction techniques. Oriented clay aggregates on platinum slides are heated in a small platinum-wire resistor furnace placed on an x-ray spectrometer unit. The intensity of the main diffraction lines of each phase is noted versus the temperature. The nature and the temperature of formation of the different phases are closely related to the structure and composition of the sample. The important role of some cations in exchange position is emphasized.

Accidental discharges of the hazardous nuclear fission products 137Cs+ and 90Sr2+ into the environment, such as during the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear accident, have occurred repeatedly throughout the ‘nuclear age.’ Numerous studies of the fate and transport of 137Cs+ and 90Sr2+ in soils and sediments have demonstrated their strong and selective binding to phyllosilicate clay minerals, primarily by means of cation exchange into interlayer sites. The locally concentrated amounts of these radioactive beta-emitters that can be found in these host minerals raise important questions regarding the long-term interplay and durability of radioisotope—clay associations, which is not well known. The present study goes beyond the usual short-term focus to address the permanence of radioisotope retention in clay minerals, by developing a general theoretical understanding of their resistance to the creation of defects. The present study reports ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations of the threshold displacement energy (TDE) of each symmetry-unique atomic species comprising the unit cell of model vermiculite. The TDE values determined are material specific, radiation independent, and can be used to estimate the probability of Frenkel-pair creation by direct electron—ion collision, as could be induced by the passage of a high-energy electron emitted during the beta-decay of 137Cs, 90Sr, and daughter 90Y. For 137Cs and 90Sr, the calculated probability is ~36%, while for 90Y the probability is much greater at ~89%. The long-term retention picture that emerges is that decay will progressively alter the clay interlayer structure and charge, probably leading to delamination of the clay, and re-release of residual parent isotopes. Further work examining the effect of Frenkel defect accumulation on the binding energy of parent and daughter radionuclides in the interlayer is thus justified and potentially important for accurate long-term forecasting of radionuclide transport in the environment.

Adsorption calorimetry was used to develop a method for determining the surface area of low-surface-area materials (<1 m2/g), which required no pretreatment of the surface, such as outgassing at elevated temperatures. The method involved flowing heptane through a small amount of sample (0.15 to 1.0 g) in the flow cell of a commercial microcalorimeter. When thermal equilibrium was reached at the powder-heptane interface, pure heptane was replaced with a heptane carrier-solution containing 0.6 volume % n-butanol (n-BuOH) as the preferential adsorbate. The integral enthalpy of preferential saturation adsorption, ΔHsat, of n-BuOH on the surface was found to be a function of the BET surface area of the sample. An empirical relationship between ΔHsat and BET surface area was determined over a surface area range of about three orders of magnitude (0.095 to 81 m2/g) by performing adsorption experiments on five α-alumina standard reference powders. The technique was applied to the determination of surface areas of untreated rock and mineral powders.

Sulfonated carbon is a ‘green,’ solid-acid catalyst. For applications purposes, its surface area needs to be improved and its preparation needs to be made environmentally friendly. The objective of the present study was to provide a green and economical method of preparing a sulfonated carbon catalyst by using palygorskite (Plg) fiber as a support for sulfonated carbon. Sulfonated carbon/palygorskite solid-acid catalyst (SC-Plg) was synthesized via one-step carbonization-sulfonation by mixing palygorskite with sucrose as the carbon source and p-toluenesulfonic acid as the sulfonating agent. The catalyst was characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM, FTIR, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The results indicated that sucrose-derived carbon was loaded uniformly on the surface of Plg fibers and formed the SC-Plg catalyst. The inexpensive Plg fibers could replace sucrose-derived carbon and increase the surface area of the resulting catalyst. The SC-Plg shows significant catalytic performance and excellent stability when used in the esterification of oleic acid with methanol. The conversion of oleic acid reached 68.09%, even after five cycles. This work paves the way for the development of highly active, carbon-based, solid-acid composite catalysts using a natural Plg nanofiber template.

To determine the parameters that control the attack of Mn minerals by acid ammonium oxalate in darkness (AAOD), rhodochrosite, pyrolusite, manganosite, hausmannite, and bixbyite were shaken with AAOD for 2 hr. These treatments were followed systematically by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and AAOD-extractable Mn analyses. About 5% of original hausmannite (surface area = 6 m2/g) remained in the solid residue of the AAOD treatment; however, if the hausmannite surface area was increased to 8 m2/g, by grinding, it completely dissolved in oxalate. Synthetic hausmannite of high surface area (37 m2/g) and rhodochrosite were completely dissolved by oxalate. Manganosite (1.5 m2/g) and especially pyrolusite (~ 1 m2/g) were more resistant to AAOD attack. Ground manganosite (4.2 m2/g) dissolved completely, but ground pyrolusite (7.2 m2/g) was only partially attacked by AAOD, inasmuch as about 25% of pyrolusite was found in the residue. An increase of the extraction time to 4 hr did not completely dissolve the ground pyrolusite.

As a result of the AAOD treatment, MnC2O4 · 3H2O and MnC2O4 · 2H2O precipitated from the oxalate solutions with all starting minerals, except pyrolusite (~ 1 m2/g), which only slightly dissolved. The seldom reported MnC2O4 · 3H2O phase was identified in residues of freshly extracted samples by its strong characteristic peak at 6.5.-6.6 Å, the intensity of which gradually decreased and disappeared over several days when the sample was exposed to ambient conditions (22°C and 70% relative humidity). The trihydrate phase also collapsed after heating AAOD-treated rhodochrosite at 50°C; α-MnC2O4 · 2H2O was identified as the main crystalline product. Heating the α-MnC2O4 · 2H2O product at 115°C overnight transformed most of it to MnC2O4. The color of the oxalate-treated samples ranged from pinkish-gray to black (7.5 YR); their surface area ranged from about 20 to 30 m2/g. The degree of transformation of Mn minerals by oxalate depended on the surface area and structural characteristics of the starting materials.

DNA manipulation is crucial for many biotechnological prospects and for medical applications such as gene therapy. This requires the amplification and extraction of DNA from bacteria and the transfer of these DNA molecules into cells, including bacterial and mammalian cells. The capacity of the natural magnesium silicate clay mineral sepiolite to bind to DNA makes it a potentially useful tool for biotechnological/medical strategies. In addition, sepiolite is inexpensive and classified as non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. This review will first describe the physicochemical interactions between sepiolite and DNA. Then, the leverage of sepiolite/DNA interactions for DNA extraction from bacteria, to optimize DNA transfer into bacteria and DNA transfection into mammalian cells, are presented. Finally, the putative toxicity of sepiolite and its advantages and perspectives for future prospects, such as the improvement of immunotherapy, are also discussed.

The collector for separating diasporic bauxite serves as a type of flotation reagent by adsorbing selectively on diaspore to make it hydrophobic enough to separate it from the aluminosilicates. Although the flotation process is considered economical in the desilication of Chinese diasporic bauxite, the existing collectors fail to separate these ores because of their poor adsorption selectivity over other minerals. The present study was an attempt to seek a collector for selective flotation of diaspore over aluminosilicates. A novel carboxyl hydroxamic acid compound, 2,2-bis(hydroxycarbamoyl) decanoic acid (BHDA), was designed and synthesized, and the flotation behavior of diaspore, kaolinite, and illite was investigated by flotation tests with BHDA. The interactions between the BHDA and the minerals were also explored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta-potential measurement, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Using BHDA as the collector, the pulp pH value affected the floatability of diaspore significantly while the floatability of kaolinite or illite was unaffected or only slightly affected. The dosage of BHDA had little effect on the floatability of the three minerals. The greatest difference in floatability between diaspore and aluminosilicates occurred at mid-range pulp pH (7). Large shifts in characteristic absorption peaks and new absorption peaks were observed for BHDA-treated diaspore but were absent from BHDA-treated aluminosilicates. The change in the negative zeta potential of diaspore was also greater than those of aluminosilicates in the presence of BHDA. The O atoms in the carboxyl and hydroxycarbamoyl of BHDA have highly negative charges, and favorable stereo conditions existed to form five- or six-membered rings, resulting in their coordination with the Al atoms of diaspore, leading to chemisorption in chelate rings; the adsorption of BHDA on kaolinite or illite, on the other hand, was mainly physical in nature. The BHDA was, therefore, highly selective in the flotation between diaspore and aluminosilicates and possibly suitable for the separation of diasporic bauxite.

Clay–organic interaction is an important natural process that underpins soil ecosystem services. This process can also be tailored to produce clay–organic nanocomposites for industrial and environmental applications. The organic moiety of the nanocomposites, typically represented by a toxic surfactant, could be replaced by hydrochar formed from biomolecules (e.g. glucose) via hydrothermal carbonization. The effect of montmorillonite (Mnt) and glucose dosage on hydrochar formation, however, has not been clarified. In addition, the mechanisms by which Mnt-hydrochar nanocomposites (CMnt) can detoxify and remove carcinogenic Cr(VI) from aqueous solution are not well understood. In the current study, research milestones in terms of clay–organic interactions are summarized, following which the synthesis and characterization of CMnt for Cr(VI) adsorption are outlined. Briefly, 1 g of Mnt was reacted with 75 mL of glucose solution (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 mol L−1) by hydrothermal carbonization at 200°C for 16 h. The resultant CMnt samples were analyzed for chemical composition, functional groups, morphological features, and Cr(VI) adsorptive properties. Mnt promoted the conversion of glucose to hydrochars, the particle size of which (~80 nm) was appreciably smaller than that formed in the absence of Mnt (control). Furthermore, the hydrochars in CMnt had an aromatic structure with low hydrogen substitution and high stability (C/H atomic ratio 0.34–0.99). The weakened OH (from hydrochar) and Si–O–Si stretching peaks in the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of CMnt are indicative of chemical bonding between Mnt and hydrochar. The CMnt samples were effective at removing toxic Cr(VI) from acidic aqueous solutions. Several processes were involved, including direct reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), complexation of Cr(III) with carboxyl and phenolic groups of hydrochar, electrostatic attraction between Cr(VI) and positively charged CMnt at pH 2 followed by indirect reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and Cr(III) precipitation.

The partial molar free energies, entropies and heat contents of the water in suspensions of Li-, Na-, and K-clay were measured relative to pure water by means of a tensiometer. This method of obtaining these thermodynamic properties is far more sensitive than the more common method utilizing adsorption isotherms and a form of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The partial molar free energy of the water decreased with time after stirring and increased rapidly upon stirring. This was taken as evidence that a gradual increase in the degree of orientation of water molecules associated with the clay particles occurred as the particles fell into the more random edge-to-surface thixotropic structure. The partial molar entropies and heat contents of the water in the suspensions were found to be less than those for pure water. Hence, this evidence also supported the postulate that an ordered water structure exists in the thixotropic suspensions.

The Tuluanshan Formation of the eastern Coastal Range of Taiwan overlies an andesitic core complex presumed to be the source of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the Si- and Mg-rich mineralization of sepiolite and palygorskite (attapulgite) which are found in veins within fissures and in fracture zones of the volcanic rocks of the region. This study was undertaken in order to understand these relationships better by characterizing sepiolite and palygorskite in this Formation and by examining their occurrence and distribution in the Tungho (TH) and Chunjih (CJ) areas. Samples were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and petrographic, scanning (SEM), and transmission (TEM) electron microscopic methods. Sepiolite and palygorskite are blocky and earthy-type materials that display fibrous characteristics when viewed using TEM and SEM and occurred alone or with chalcedony in veins. The fibers of blocky sepiolite are commonly intercalated with smectite but the earthy type of sepiolite and palygorskite observed in this study displayed precipitation from fluid enriched in Si, Al, Mg, and minor Fe and depleted in other ions at an earlier stage of offset of the andesitic veins. Continuation of reverse faulting and high shearing stress caused the precipitation of a significant quantity of interlaminated sepiolite. Sepiolite and palygorskite were formed at an earlier stage of fluid interaction relative to smectite in the Tuluanshan Formation.
