Les auteurs ont étudié, par la technique de la diffusion brownienne l'interaction existant entre l'acide-L-glutamique et les systèmes eau-kaolinite et eau-montmorillonite, ainsi que l'influence du pH sur les coefficients de diffusion.

Il nous a été possible d'éliminer les facteurs mécaniques d'allongement de parcours en étudiant la diffusion de l'eau dans le système eau-argile.

Les résultats montrent une plus faible diffusion de l'acide glutamique dans le système eau-kaolinite que dans le système eau-montmorillonite.

L'effet du pH est discuté.

Hydrogen forms of natural mordenite and clinoptilolite were used as catalysts for styrene oligomerization and as matrices to hold the resultant oligomers in order to prepare intense and light-resistant pigments. In contrast to synthetic zeolites of similar pore sizes (mainly H-ZSM-5, H-mordenite), the natural zeolites did not form products with an intense (pink) colouration. H-mordenite samples treated with styrene developed some colour due to styrene oligomers (the chromophore) whereas, in treated clinoptilolites, colour formation was negligible due to the lack of access of styrene molecules into the elliptical channels. The results of catalytic tests for cracking of cumene (cumene and styrene have similar molecular sizes) were consistent with the styrene oligomerization results. They indicate a noticeable catalytic activity with natural H-mordenite and a lack of activity with clinoptilolite. On the other hand, catalytic tests for propan-2-ol decomposition indicate a high activity with both natural zeolites, which confirms the presence of acid sites and their accessibility to small alcohol molecules.

Phillipsite was crystallized from a high siliceous aluminosilicate mixture containing Zn cations and methylene blue (MB). The presence of MB did not affect the crystallization, but it resulted in a substantial amount of dye being anchored to the zeolite, despite its narrow channels. Dye-free synthetic phillipsite modified with MB solution showed markedly lower dye content, which, however was considerably higher than those in the MB-treated natural phillipsite and mordenite. The ultra violet/visible (UV-vis) spectra of the dye-modified synthetic phillipsites indicated the presence of MB monomers and oligomers, whereas the spectra of the modified natural zeolites showed protonated MB also. The electron spin resonance spectra of samples crystallized with MB indicated the presence of paramagnetic species.

Samples from the pyrophyllite reserves in the Malatya–Pütürge region, used in the production of the whitest cement in Europe, were beneficiated using flotation. The mineralogical composition of the natural pyrophyllite, as determined using X-ray diffraction, includes pyrophyllite, kaolinite, quartz, illite–mica and feldspar. The chemical composition of pyrophyllite contains 69.75% SiO2 and 23.04% Al2O3. The pyrophyllite percentage (40–45 wt.%) of the natural sample increased to 60–80 wt.% after flotation. In flotation experiments, the effects of reagent amounts, types and their mixtures were investigated. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and pine oil as frothers and kerosene as a collector were used in the flotation studies. The use of reagents as mixtures has a positive effect on the beneficiation compared to use on their own. The best result was obtained for a mixture of MIBC with kerosene, which is a non-ionic hydrocarbon oil, yielding a concentrate containing 26.63% Al2O3. Improved results were also observed for kerosene plus frother mixtures after flotation cleaning circuits. The bubbles formed during flotation were photographed and the bubble diameters were measured using the ImageJ program. The Al2O3 content was evaluated by correlating the bubble diameters. In general, selectivity decreased during experiments in which bubble diameters were reduced.

The Qingliang Temple kiln located in Baofeng County, Henan Province, China, is the discovery site of Ru Kuan porcelain, which is one of the five famous porcelain types of the Song dynasty in China. The ‘Ru-type ware’ and unglazed firing bodies were unearthed from the Qingliang Temple kiln in 2014, and the excavation site was very close to the central firing area of Ru Kuan porcelain. In this paper, the chemical composition, firing temperature and phase structure of the Ru-type ware and unglazed firing bodies from the Qingliang Temple kiln were analysed systematically using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, high-temperature thermal expansion and X-ray diffraction. The raw-material sources of the Ru-type ware bodies with various glaze colours are consistent but differ significantly from those of the unglazed firing bodies. The firing temperatures of the Ru-type ware and unglazed firing bodies are 1150–1200°C and 950°C, respectively, which are considered underfired. Mullite, α-quartz, β-cristobalite and α-Fe2O3 are the main constituents of the Ru-type ware bodies, whereas α-quartz and anatase were identified in the unglazed firing bodies. The Ru-type ware is related to the Ru Kuan ware in terms of firing techniques and official use.

Acid activation was carried out by heating muds prepared from Ca-rich bentonite (CaB), sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and distilled water, yielding various bleaching earths (BEs). The roles of each of the process variables, namely mass fraction of H2SO4 (x) in the dried CaB and pure H2SO4 mixture, heating temperature (T) and contact time (t), in the activation were tested. The raw CaB and each BE were examined with X-ray diffraction, chemical analyses, N2 adsorption/desorption, pH-metry and tintometry. The BE contents in both the aqueous and oily suspensions were set to 2% by mass in order to measure the pH value and the bleaching power, respectively. The optimum conditions for the activation to obtain a BE having the same bleaching power (0.60) as Tonsil® Optimum Bleaching Earth for soybean oil were determined as x = 0.35, T = 100°C and t = 2 h. The bleaching power increased only marginally upon increasing the activation time from 2 h up to 10 h at a given x and T. After 10 h, significant changes did not take place in the bleaching power of the BE. The mass fraction of total structural metal oxide (y), pH value, specific pore volume (V), specific surface area (S) and mean internal diameter (D) of the mesopores for the optimized BE are y = 0.10, pH = 3.0, V = 0.31 cm3 g–1, S = 225 m2 g–1 and D = 7 nm. The pH and D values were more important for bleaching the alkaline refined soybean oil compared to the other parameters tested.

To reveal the factors that determine the different ranges of compositional variations in high- and low-temperature Al-rich K-dioctahedral micas, relationships between structural parameters and cation composition were analysed for: (1) a series of synthetic 2M1 muscovite–phengite–aluminoceladonite samples; and (2) Al-rich, K-dioctahedral 2M1 micas with previously published refined structural data. The dependences of the unit-cell parameters on cation composition and the variations in tetrahedral and octahedral lateral dimensions and sheet thicknesses, interlayer distances and tetrahedral rotation angles were analysed and compared with those found previously for the series 1M trans-vacant (tv) illite–1M aluminoceladonite. The similarities in the variations of unit-cell parameters with cation composition observed in 2M1 and 1M natural and synthetic K-dioctahedral micas imply that these variations are controlled by similar – albeit not identical – structural factors. A major structural factor is the readjustment of the differently sized tetrahedral and octahedral sheets, which is realized in a different manner in micas formed under different pressure and temperature conditions.

Halloysite is a 1:1 dioctahedral clay mineral that has been studied widely for applications in nanotechnology and as a mineral exploration guide for recognizing regolith-hosted heavy rare earth element (HREE) deposits. In Brazil, pegmatites from the state of Rio de Janeiro have been catalogued, but their potential to host halloysite deposits has never been studied. After a mineral exploration programme, one pegmatite with considerable halloysite contents and economic potential was discovered. This study reports the mineralogical and chemical characterization of the halloysite of this pegmatite and evaluates the possibility of clay-adsorbed HREE deposits, like that in the Zudong (China) regolith-hosted HREE deposit. Seven samples were collected in horizontal channels. Bulk samples and clay fractions (<2 μm) were analysed by quantitative mineral analysis (X-ray diffraction/Rietveld method), chemical analysis (major elements by X-ray fluorescence and Y, U, Th and rare earth elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, particle-size analysis, nitrogen physisorption and cation-exchange capacity. Mixed polygonal/cylindrical halloysite-7Å in concentrations between 6.3 and 35.4 wt.% in bulk samples and between 58.0 and 89.8 wt.% in the clay fractions were identified in the pegmatite. The clay fractions presented an average chemical composition of 45.46 wt.% SiO2, 36.10 wt.% Al2O3, 14.62 wt.% loss on ignition and 1.04 wt.% Fe2O3, as well as technological properties close to those observed in world-class halloysite deposits such as Dragon Mine (USA) and Matauri Bay (New Zealand). The clay minerals did not present significant HREE contents.

Clay minerals possess the peculiar characteristic that they normally occur as very small crystals. We cannot, therefore, afford to ignore the contribution that colloid science can make to the study of clay minerals. Many colloidal systems are stable because the particles are electrically charged. There is, of course, electrical neutrality of the system as a whole, but there is an electric separation within the system whereby electricity of one kind (it may be a positive or negative, depending on the system) is anchored for the time being to the particles while the complementary charge exists as ions (counter ions they are often called). Some of the counter ions must be regarded as in solution in the suspending medium (normally water) for it is their mobility relative to the particles which gives rise to electrical conductivity and to electrophoresis, electro-endosmosis and streaming potential.

Non-isothermal dehydration kinetics of a heulandite-type zeolite-rich tuff from Turkey was investigated using thermogravimetric data recorded at three different heating rates (5, 10 and 20°C/min) under nitrogen flow. Isoconversional model-free methods gave a constant activation energy over the temperature range 30–200°C suggesting that the dehydration is a single-step process within this temperature range. The apparent activation energy was determined as: 34.54±1.18, 30.99±1.14 and 27.79±1.42 kJ/mol by the Flynn–Wall–Ozawa, the Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and the Friedman methods, respectively. The activation energy values determined were less than the activation energy for vaporization of bulk water, indicating control of the dehydration rate by diffusion of water within this temperature range.

A Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) was activated with HNO3 (20 wt.%) solution at various temperatures and times to obtain acid-activated MMT (Acid-MMT). Zinc (4 wt.%) was supported on Acid-MMT via the impregnation method using Zn(NO3)2⋅6H2O as a precursor. The catalytic performance of the Zn/Acid-MMT for the aromatization of heptane was investigated. The amount and distribution of acidity of Acid-MMT, which could be adjusted by changing the acid activation time and temperature, significantly affected the heptane conversion and aromatics content. As a result, an efficient Zn/Acid-MMT catalyst for the aromatization reaction was obtained by optimizing the acid-treatment conditions of Na-MMT.

The antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant effects of halloysite nanoclay, Cloisite 10A (C10A) and Cloisite 15A (C15A) organonanoclays were examined in this study. The antimicrobial action was assessed using the agar-well method and the disc diffusion method. The free radical-scavenging effects of the clays were determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl method. Halloysite showed antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. C10A was effective against both Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and E. faecalis) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa). Additionally, only C10A was found to have an antimicrobial effect on Candida glabrata of 18 mm amongst the tested clays. C15A showed an antimicrobial effect on S. aureus and K. pneumoniae. It was determined that the antifungal properties of organoclays were higher than those of halloysite. The most effective clay type was determined to be C10A. The positively charged inner surface of the halloysite nanoclay can provide a large area to which negatively charged free radicals can attach. The modified C15A used in this study has two long-chain alkyl groups attached, whereas the modified C10A has a single long-chain alkyl group and a benzyl group attached. It is proposed that the differences in these antimicrobial effects are due to the structures of the molecules. According to these results, organoclays as green source materials could be used as additives and coatings in food processing, biomedical devices, filters and paints due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
