The mineralogy and crystal chemistry of a new talc ore deposit situated at Thu Ngac commune, Thanh Son district, Phu Tho province, Vietnam, was investigated using X-ray fluorescence, electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (29Si and 1H) and colorimetry.

Both chemical and crystal-chemical analyses showed that the talcs from the Phu Tho province are very pure because they contain few accessory minerals (chlorite, amphibole and goethite) and few substitutions of Si by Fe and Al in their crystal structure. The talc ore may well meet the standards required for a wide range of industrial applications.

Natural zeolites in the Aksitero sedimentary formation of the western Luzon area of the Philippines were evaluated. The natural washed zeolite (NW-Z) was preconditioned with acid to purify it and increase its surface area. Acid treatment with 3 M HCl for 12 h yielded optimum acid treatment of the NW-Z, causing increases in the Si/Al ratio, the specific surface area by 32.5% and the porosity of the acid-treated zeolite (HC-Z). The HC-Z was washed with 4 M NaCl for 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, 48 and 72 h to improve its cation-exchange capacity for copper. The sodium-treated zeolite (Na-Z) was immersed in 100 ppm CuSO4 solution to test the copper-uptake capacity. Pretreatment of HC-Z with 4 M NaCl for 24 h is optimal for sodium treatment of the preconditioned HC-Z. The preconditioning techniques did not significantly alter the structure and morphology of the zeolite samples. It is suggested that the preconditioned Philippine natural zeolite samples are readily available for further functionalization that will enhance their antibacterial, catalytic and adsorption properties, with various useful applications in the field of catalysis, biomedicine, environmental mitigation and wastewater treatment.

Volcanic tuffs are important in determining the stratigraphic age of sedimentary sequences, which is closely related to the tectonic, sedimentological, geomorphological, palaeoclimatic, and palaeo-ecological evolution of the sequences. However, it may be difficult practically to identify tuffs in stratigraphic sections, especially when they are altered after deposition. In this study, a series of petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses was deployed in the tuff layers cropping out in the Lunpola Basin of the central Tibetan Plateau, which is a crucial site for studying the dynamics and processes of the Cenozoic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and its environmental impacts. In these pyroclastic layers, authigenic analcime is the main volcanic glass alteration product. The analcime-bearing samples are Na-enriched, in contrast to the K-abundant magmatic rocks in the central Tibetan Plateau. The distribution patterns of the rare earth elements (REEs) of the bulk analcime-bearing samples are similar to those of the magmatic rocks but different from those of the analcime-poor sediments and analogues of well-mixed upper continental material (e.g. the upper continental crust and post-Archaean Australian average shales). The distinct distributions of Na and REEs among analcime-bearing samples, analcime-poor sediments, and volcanic rocks reveal that analcime formed both from alteration of volcanic material and from mixing processes with non-volcanic sediments. It is proposed, therefore, that the discrimination plot of Na2O/Al2O3-(La/Yb)N may be used to distinguish the analcime-related pyroclastic rocks from the basin sedimentary sequence, and thus it may provide a means of discriminating between various volcanic material and of supporting age dating by tephrochronology in the central Tibetan Plateau.

Systems consisting of layered structures and photoactive molecules have been studied extensively. The structures of resulting complexes may be controlled by UV–Vis radiation, which subsequently affects their materials properties. This study describes a synthesis route for obtaining a photoresponsive kaolinite intercalation compound. The material was prepared by co-intercalating azobenzene and benzylalkylammonium chlorides into a methoxy form of kaolinite. The resultant materials possessed large basal spacing values in the range of 45–55 Å. The UV–Vis and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses confirmed the reversible photoisomerization of azobenzene upon exposure to UV and Vis radiation. This phenomenon was significantly influenced by the type and amount of co-intercalated molecules. Upon multiple trans–cis conversions, the azobenzene partially evaporated. For the first time, a kaolinite-based material was prepared that exhibited photochromic behaviour upon UV and Vis irradiation.

We obtained natural red soil (RS), rich in iron, from the region of Palotina in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The RS sample was purified by suspension in water and sieved to remove plant particulates. It was then treated thermally at 800°C to remove organic volatiles; this sample was called RS800. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, infrared and electronic spectroscopy, ζ-potential analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Colorimetric studies were performed according to the CIEL*a*b* system. Tests have shown that RS800 has the ability to remove methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. Thus, it was used as an adsorbent at various temperatures (25, 35, 45°C). According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 23.256 mg g–1 (25°C). Unexpectedly, increasing temperature reduced qmax to 21.659 mg g–1 at 35°C and to 21.186 mg g–1 at 45°C. Therefore, RS800 must be used at room temperature (25°C), making its application in large-scale wastewater treatment feasible. After using RS800 as an adsorbent, the solids were filtered, dried, pulverized, and used as hybrid pigments in commercial white paints. Pigmented paints were used to paint a plaster specimen and colorimetric measurement was performed. These paints were tested for colour stability in acidic and alkaline environments. The results indicate that RS800 is efficient in the treatment of water contaminated with cationic dyes and can be reused as a hybrid pigment.

Highly alkaline environments induced by cement-based materials are likely to cause the physical and/or chemical properties of the bentonite buffer materials in radioactive waste repositories to deteriorate. Assessing long-term alteration of concrete/clay systems requires physicochemical models and a number of input parameters. In order to provide reliability in the assessment of the long-term performance of bentonite buffers under disposal conditions, it is necessary to develop and verify reactive transport codes for concrete/clay systems. In this study, a PHREEQC-based, reactive transport analysis code (MC-CEMENT ver. 2) was developed and was verified by comparing results of the calculations with in situ observations of the mineralogical evolution at the concrete/argillite interface. The calculation reproduced the observations such as the mineralogical changes in the argillite limited to within 1 cm in thickness from the interface, formation of CaCO3 and CSH, dissolution of quartz, decrease of porosity in the argillite and an increase in the concrete. These agreements indicate a possibility that models based on lab-scale (∼1 year) experiments can be applied to longer time scales although confidence in the models is necessary for much longer timescales. The fact that the calculations did not reproduce the dissolution of clays and the formation of gypsum indicates that there is still room for improvement in our model.

To a mineralogist, minerals are defined primarily by their crystal structure and chemical composition. Many minerals of industrial importance retain this identity in their final application. For the producer and end user, the physical properties of these industrial mineral products such as size and shape distribution, refractive index, density, hardness, refractoriness and colour are of primary importance, since it is the combination of these, together with its surface chemistry, which gives the mineral its functionality. As a result, minerals which are very different in structure and origin but have many similar physical properties, such as kaolin and calcium carbonate, are often used in very similar roles and in similar applications.

Examples of mineral use in diverse applications such as paper, paints and coatings, polymers and films show how the physical properties of different minerals are exploited and engineered to provide optical, mechanical and rheological performance and to minimise cost. Industrial mineral producers have been manipulating these properties for many decades and continue to do so in search of improved performance and new applications. As new high performance materials become more commonplace, the challenge is to find new ways of transforming minerals to provide the necessary functionality for them.

I am going to speak about the results which we have obtained on nickel hydroxide gels. These experiments have been undertaken as a preliminary to the synthesis of certain clays; the intention is to study systematically the conditions of synthesis starting from hydroxides, while varying certain physico-chemical factors; especially the age of the gels.

Samples of the argille scagliose from various localities in the Modenese Apennines have been studied by optical, X-ray and d.t.a, methods as part of an investigation into the composition and origin of this remarkable allochthonous formation. Illite, chlorite and a kaolinitic mineral of “fireclay” type are widespread. Samples from one locality contain also a conspicuous 22–28 Å swelling chlorite, the origin of which is discussed. It is as yet uncertain whether this mineral is confined to clays containing exotic blocks of ophiolite (greenstone) or whether it is more widely distributed.

After a brief account of the work currently in progress on fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the U.S.S.R., and particularly in Azerbaijan, the concept of finely-dispersed minerals as against clay minerals is considered and some comments made on classification schemes. Conditions of formation and deposition determine whether sedimentation or diagenesis is predominant and hence the mineralogy of the deposit. Methods of mineralogical investigation are as yet ill-developed and much remains to be done. Finally, some of the wider problems in clay mineralogy are discussed and some suggestions made regarding the organization of suitable studies, particularly in the U.S.S.R.

The dehydration of an interstratified talc-trioctahedral smectite mineral (aliettite) from Monte Chiaro, Taro Valley, Italy, saturated by Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and NH4 cations, was studied by X-ray powder diffraction and thermal analysis, under different conditions of temperature and relative humidity. Both in the natural and exchanged states the mineral exhibited several orders of basal reflections and, to varying relative humidity (p/po) and temperature (T) conditions, behaved like a smectite except that: (i) the c-dimension was not very sensitive to relative humidity increase; (ii) the closest packing was for T > 400°C, the collapsed state being reached gradually as T increased and an inverse trend was apparent between 20° and 300°C; (iii) the endothermic reactions at T = 400°C and T = 600°C appeared to be affected by the exchange treatment. The experimental data are consistent with a structural model in which it is possible to distinguish layers containing a patchwork of talc and smectite domains: the patchworks are superposed to make a regular alternation of the two domains.

La mise en contact d'un minéral interstrafié mica-vermiculite, en paillettes de 1 à 4 mm2, avec une solution concentrée d'halogénure de métal alcalin conduit à un échange d'ions ainsi qu'à une adsorption de sel. L'échange d'ions n'est que partiel et l'adsorption de sel a lieu dans les interfeuillets vermiculite. La teneur du minéral en sel adsorbé dépend de la nature du cation et de l'anion du sel ainsi que de la température de la solution. Les complexes salins obtenus possèdent la propriété de gonfler macroscopiquement dans l'eau avec désorption du sel. Dans les cas des chlorures de lithium, de potassium et d'ammonium, les complexes salins tendent vers des compositions définies.

Fine-grained sediments are a major parent material in Ebro Valley soils. During the 1960s, the area was transformed by irrigation and soils underwent serious degradation processes. The sediments have a fine texture, high CaCO3 contents and high salinity-sodicity levels, and contain illite as the most important phyllosilicate in the fine fractions. Two groups of finely laminated organization have been recognized in terms of layer thickness and grain-size distribution. Based on texture, the microstructure of the silty and clayey layers is different, irrespective of their mode of formation; porosity characteristics also differ between layers, leading exclusively to a capillary evaporation flow that results in salinization of the plough horizons. The sediments are formed by two different mechanisms, each layer resulting from uninterrupted sedimentation of a suspension or from deposition of suspended particles by water discharge.

A clayey soil from southern Tunisia has been studied in order to assess its possible use as an anti-pollution barrier. The soil has been characterized from both geotechnical and physicochemical points of view. The physicochemical characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, specific surface area and cation exchange capacity measurements. Hydration tests were carried out using oedometers to determine the swelling behaviour of compacted specimens under different stress conditions. The large swelling pressure (420 kPa) is in agreement with the mainly smectitic character of the soil highlighted by the physicochemical tests. The changes in the fabric of the soil and in its porosity after the hydration tests were investigated using the same physicochemical methods, and related to the macroscopic hydro-mechanical properties. X-ray diffraction and mercury intrusion measurements show that there are changes in the interlayer spacing, particle size and inter-aggregate pore distribution. Comparing the properties of the soil with the Belgian guidelines for the construction of anti-pollution barriers showed that the material was suitable for that use.

The Tremp–Isona basin (south-central Pyrenees, Lleida, Spain) shows maximum development of the Tremp Group (early Maastrichtian to late Paleocene) covering a wide geological record across the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary in continental facies. The mineralogy and geochemistry of lutites were used to assess the evolution of weathering from the Maastrichtian to the Eocene, and particularly for the red beds of the Lower Red and Upper Red Units (pre- and post-K/Pg, respectively). Chemical weathering decreased initially in the Maastrichtian (Gray Unit to Lower Red Unit), increasing subsequently from the Paleocene (Upper Red Unit) to Eocene units. ANOVA analysis of mineralogical compositions and cluster hierarchical analysis have been useful tools to select convenient lutites for assessment of weathering evolution by the chemical alteration index and by broadening of the 001 X-ray diffraction line of illite after ethylene glycol solvation. The lesser chemical weathering found in the Upper Red Unit (Danian) is interpreted in the context of relative warming and aridification, in climates of contrasting seasons and pronounced dry seasons.

The influence of excess Al2O3 on 3:2 mullite produced from α-Al2O3 and pyrophyllite powder was examined. A mixture consisting of 28 wt.% dehydroxylated pyrophyllite and 72 wt.% α-Al2O3 was milled in an attrition mill. The milled powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1600°C for 10, 20 and 30 min. Subsequently, the samples were heated at 1350°C for 2 h to determine the influence of the excess Al2O3 on the microstructure. No glassy phase was detected in the sample containing 72 wt.% Al2O3 and sintered at 1600°C for 20 min. The sample with 72 wt.% Al2O3 had greater hardness and fracture toughness compared to 3:2 mullite. The greatest hardness and fracture toughness of 12.43 GPa and 2.71 MPa m–0.5, respectively, were obtained in the sample containing 72 wt.% Al2O3 sintered at 1600°C for 20 min.

The nitric-acid dissolution of chrysotile was investigated with the aim of revealing the effect of pH on its structure. Chrysotile becomes more soluble at lower pH, with the octahedral, brucite sheet more readily dissolved than the tetrahedral sheet. The dissolution of the brucite sheet increases the pH of the solvent, because of the release of OH− groups along with the Mg2+ ions. At pH 2.00, the characteristic cylindrical fibre bundle structure of chrysotile is retained after dissolution, although the outside surface of each fibre becomes rough. Chrysotile remains fibrous upon dissolution at pH 1.08, but the fibres are no longer crystalline and their cylindrical structure collapses. The nitric-acid treatments result in an increase in both the specific surface area and the pore volume of chrysotile.

Bentonite clay is often included as a buffer, backfill and/or sealing material in designs for deep geological repositories for radioactive wastes. It is expected that bentonite materials may undergo some mineralogical alteration as they interact with in situ groundwaters over long timescales on the order of thousands to millions of years. Long-term modelling of these materials is therefore important in order to demonstrate confidence that the engineered designs will continue to perform as required over their intended lifetimes (required assessment timescales can be up to 1 million years). The key geochemical processes that must be considered in such modelling are mineral dissolution and precipitation and cation exchange. These processes are expected to occur simultaneously and so modelling of their coupled effects and their rates (kinetics) is necessary. Illustrative reactive-transport models of the geochemical alteration of montmorillonite (the primary mineral in bentonite exhibiting cation exchange) are presented which demonstrate that one possible approach to fully coupling cation exchange and clay mineral dissolution kinetics, referred to here as the ‘all-component coupling’ approach, may lead to unrealistic behaviour due to feedback that may occur in the formulation. This feedback can be avoided if a ‘common-component’ conceptual model for the dissolution of exchanger end members is adopted, where only the saturation of the exchanger ‘structural unit’ is considered when evaluating the potential for dissolution of the mineral. Such considerations have been proposed historically in stability analyses for montmorillonite, but have not been explored widely in the modelling literature.
