A subset of the line is called non-averaging if, whenever two points belong to the set, their average does not. This paper provides an example of a closed set which is small in the sense that it is non-averaging and has porosity 1 at each of its points and yet large in the sense that its Hausdorff dimension is 1.

The first result gives a (modest) improvement of the best general bound known to date for the rank of the intersection U ∩ V of two finite-rank subgroups of a free group F in terms of the ranks of U and V. In the second result it is deduced from that bound that if A is a finite-rank subgroup of F and B < F is non-cyclic, then the index of A ∩ B in B, if finite, is less than 2(rank(A) - 1), whence in particular if rank (A) = 2, then B ≤ A. (This strengthens a lemma of Gersten.) Finally a short proof is given of Stallings' result that if U, V (as above) are such that U ∩ V has finite index in both U and V, then it has finite index in their join 〈U, V〉.

A projective metric space is a pappian projective space together with a quadric and a certain equivalence relation on the pairs of those points which do not belong to the quadric. This equivalence relation is defined by means of the corresponding quadratic form and satisfies a condition which is a projective version of Miquel's theorem. We characterize the projective metric spaces of dimension at least two over fields of order at least 13.

The purpose of this note is to prove the Herzog-Schônheim [3] conjecture for finite nilpotent groups. This conjecture states that any nontrivial partition of a group into cosets must contain two cosets of the same index (Corollary IV below). See Porubský [4, Section 8] for a perspective on coset partitions.

It is well known that the Riemann-complete integral (or equivalently the Perron integral) integrates an everywhere finite ordinary first derivative (which may be thought of as a Peano derivative of order one). It is also known that the Cesàro-Perron integral of order (n - 1) integrates an everywhere finite Peano derivative of order n. The present work concerns itself with necessary and sufficient conditions for the Riemann-complete integrability of an exact Peano derivative of order n. It is shown that when the integral exists, it can be expressed as the ‘Henstock' limit of the sum of a particular kind of interval function. All functions considered will be real valued.

A corollary of the main result is that if L is a finite-dimensional Galois extension of a field K and if w is a valuation of L extending a valuation v of K, then K is closed in L if and only if all valuations of L extending v are dependent. A further consequence is a generalization of Ostrowski's criterion for a real-valued valuation to be henselian.

S. Golomb noticed that Riemann's zeta function ζ induces a probability distribution on the positive integers, for any s > 1, and studied some of its properties connected to divisibility. The object of this paper is to show that the probability distribution mentioned above is the unique solution of an entropy-maximization problem.

Formulae for the nilpotency class of the p-sylow subgroups of GL(n, q) where (p, q) = 1 are derived. These formulae are used in author's following paper: “On the other pα qβ theorem of Burnside”.

Let k be an algebraically closed field, and let l be a prime number not equal to char(k). Let X be a locally fibrant simplicial sheaf on the big étale site for k, and let Y be a k scheme which is cohomologically proper. Then there is a Künneth-type isomorphism

which is induced by an external cup-product pairing. Reductive algebraic groups G over k are cohomologically proper, by a result of Friedlander and Parshall. The resulting Hopf algebra structure on may be used together with the Lang isomorphism to give a new proof of the theorem of Friedlander-Mislin which avoids characteristic 0 theory. A vanishing criterion is established for the Friedlander-Quillen conjecture.

Let A be a finite dimensional algebra (not necessarily associative) over a field, whose automorphism group acts transitively. It is shown that K = GF(2) and A is a Kostrikin algebra. The automorphism group is determined to be a semi-direct product of two cyclic groups. The number of such algebras is also calculated.
