The first record of Dipalta serpentina Osten Sacken, 1877, preying on larvae of Myrmeleon immaculatus DeGeer, 1773, was by Smith (1934: 136-137), who stated that the fly larvae were “parasitic” on the antlion larvae. Cole and Schlinger (1969: 251) stated that the fly larva of this species “…is parasitic on the larvae of Myrmeleontidae.”

Although the fly larvae may prey upon the larvae of the antlion, we have established that they definitely prey upon the antlion pupae (Fig. 1). Judging from the emergence dates (early September 1988) of the flies, each had preyed upon an antlion pupa within its cocoon. Each antlion cocoon had one hole in it. An examination of the contents of each antlion cocoon revealed the cast skin of the antlion larva and the empty, clear skin of the antlion pupa. The pupal skins were not split open, which they would have been if the adult antlion had emerged. They were shrivelled, and looked much as if the contents had been sucked out.

Second joint of the labial palpi with a distinct tuft at the apex beneath, Head and palpi silvery white. Second joint of the labial palpi brownish gray except, at the tip. Antennae, thorax anterior winqs pale brownish-gray, in some lights silvery or golden, Thorax with a longitudinal median white streak producd gradually, widening along the dorsal margin of the anterior wings to the basal third, when it is interested by a somewhat oblique costal white streak. Another oblique costal white streak about the basal fourth; a third one longer and narrower, situated beyond the middle of the costa. and a fourth and large one near the apex, and extending into the ciliae.

An anatomical description of the larval and pupal stages of the genus Conophthorus Hopkins is given and illustrated. The description is based on larvae of nine species and pupae of eight, but the strong similarity in all anatomical details suggests that the description will probably cover the remaining species. The most recent addition to the genus, C. banksianae McPherson, is referred to particularly, and the need for a complete revision of the genus is suggested.

This paper deals with the Trinidad species included by C. H. T, Town send (Manual of Myiology, IV) in his tribe Masiphyiini. The evidence given supports the separation by Reinhard of the genus Siphosturmia Coc). and allies from Masiphya B. B. and allies. Four new species have been described in genera recognized by previous authors. Three new genera, each with a new species, have been described. Of these, one (Masiphyoidea) is certainly allied to Masiphya, but the affinities of the others (Pseudomasiphya and Mystacomyoidea) are open to doubt with the data available at present.

While making an intensive study of the bark beetles of Western North America, I noticed that two of the species in the genus Carphoborus were new. Since the last key to the species of this genus has been compiled (Swaine, 1918) Dr. Swaine has described five new species which with my two would more than double the number in the genus. I therefore feel that a new key should be made.

Maneb (manganous ethylene bisdithiocarhamate) applied topically to Oncopeltus fasciatus nymphs causes death after 7 to 10 days. The gross symptoms of intoxication, histopathology and effect on oxygen consumption are described. Activities such as feeding and walking are slightly reduced after 24 hours and completely inhibited after 3 to 4 days. The tissues most severely affected by the treatment are the secretory cells of the mid-gut epithelium and the cells of the Malpighian tubules. These at first show extreme vacuolization, reduction of the size of cell nuclei and finally cytolysis. Oxygen consumption in vivo is reduced by the treatment.

There are still a few species of Agrilus in our fauna whose food plant is unknown, Any contribution in that direction may, therefore, be of interest. It is a genus that seems to be much neglected bv collectors, owing undoubtedly to the difficLrlty met with in separating some of the species. There are several seemingly difiicult ones, however, which are stamped with such distinct characters as to make their study exceedingly interesting. With Dr. Horn's valuable paper, “The Species of Agrilus of Boreal America,” and a well-trained eye, one should be able to get along without much assistance. That does not apply to myself, for it was only after Mr. Blanchard kindly undertook to help me out that my material was properlY labelled,

In 1945 injury to shoots of balsam fir, Abies balsamea (L.) Mill., by sawfly larvae was very common in York and Madawaska counties, New Brunswick. Since then, similar injury has been noticed throughout most of New Brunswick, eastern Nova Scotia, the upper peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin.

New Brunswick specimens were identified by Dr. O. Peck of the Systematic Unit, Division of Entomology, as presumably Pleroneura borealis Felt, the specimens running to this species in Ross' Key (2); however, as stated by Ross (3), the recognition of species in the genus is not at present based upon fundamental characters. P. borealis was originally described in 1917 by Felt (1) from three specimens collected at Lake Clear, N.Y., in 1907. Except for the taxonomic revision by Ross (2), no other reference to this species was found in the literature.

During nearly fity years the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in exploration, and since Confederation it has had practically an unlimited field for its operations. The investagations of the fauna and flora of the Dominion, and the formation of a museum of natural history, are included in the plan of its present organization, but its equipment has hitherto permitted but a partial accomplishment of these departments of its work.

Conelet abortion in a jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb., seed orchard in Oneida County, Wisconsin was caused by Platylygus luridus (Reuter) (Hemiptera: Miridae) and ranged from 51% to 87% with the average 74.5% in 3 of 4 years. Adults preferred to feed on ovules in conelets and were 3 to 4 times more destructive than nymphs. When conelets were protected from this insect by coating the twig above and below the conelet with Tanglefoot®, abortion was below 11%. Other mirid adults including Phytocoris michiganae Knight, Pilophorus amoenus Uhler, Dichrooscytus suspectus Reuter, and Europiella n.sp. confined in cages with conelets did not induce abortion.

1. Field Observations on the Habits of the Species, by R. Weith.

Nannothemis bella, Uhl., is one of the smallest of dragon-flies. Of its life-history we have had no knowledge up to the present time. Until the publicetion of Williamson's Catalogue of the Dragon-flies of Indiana, last year, it was recorded only from our north-east Atlantic seaboard. I have frequently met with it in Elkhart and St. Joe Counties, the two northermost counties in Indiana; but, what has been most perplexing to me, only in a few very restricted areas, these areas not exceeding 50 yards in length by 25 yards in width from margin of lake. The only places I have met with it are at Simonton Lake, a distance of four and one-half miles from the City of Elkhart, Indiana, and Indiana and Baldwin Lakes, thirteen miles north-east of Elkhart, on the boundary line that divides Indiana from Michigan. In the latter place, on a smaller area than at Simonton Lake, the imago is very numerous. Frequent endeavors to find the species at other places where similar conditions prevail proved unsuccessful.

Eggs.—Oblong, covered with hexagonal depressions and bright green in color. Length 0.6 mil.; width 0.3 mil. Duration of egg stage 12 days.

Young Larva.—Length 2 mil.; head twice as wide as the body, round and deep ochre yellow; body dull yellowish green with a faint paler stigmatal stripe.

Mature Larva.—Body of uniform thickness, deep green with a narrow sub-dorsal and stigmatal white stripe, and a dorsal greenish-white hair line; dorsal space pale green; ventral space yellowish green. Head brownish green with a lateral white stripe which is a continuation of the sub-dorsal stripe of the body. Length at rest 25 to 26 mil.; when crawling, 26 to 27 mil. Food plant, Pinus strobus. Duration of larva stage, 35 to 40 days. Described from 57 specimens.

Adults of the new species Cubanotyphlus largo Frank, from Florida, U.S.A., are described, illustrated, and differentiated from adults of C. jimenezi Coiffait and Decou and of C. poeyi Decou, which are known only from Cuba. Distinguishing characteristics of Cubanotyphlus and of the 12 other described genera of New World Neotyphlini are given in a table, as are bibliographic citations and distribution of the 39 known species of New World Leptotyphlinae. The habitat of C. largo in the northern part of Key Largo, Monroe Co., Florida has been threatened by encroaching urban development but recently has been listed for acquisition and conservation by the government of Florida.

Plantings of Ceanothus griseus L. (also Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. griseus L.) were invaded by a rare leaf miner, Tischeria immaculata (Braun). Adults appeared at the beginning of May and most flew between 1750 and 2400 h. Mating and egg laying started immediately and females laid an average of 35 eggs (range: 15–48). Eggs measured 0.12 mm by 0.08 mm, were translucent, and hatched to minute larvae which did not feed until 24 h after hatch. Larvae reared at different temperatures and moisture regimes performed best at 21 °C and 70% relative humidity. Frass was ejected through the oval trap door constructed at the initiation of the larval mine. Pupation took place anywhere within the mine but the adult emerged through a crescentic exit hole at the end of the mine.The principal enemy was a eulophid, Pnigalio flavipes Ashmead. Various species of spiders and a bird, Junco hyemalis L., preyed on adults. Emerging adults were also trapped and killed in spittle-bug froth.

The status and the condition of the type specimens of Orthoptera described by the Abbé Léon Provancher, the pioneer entomologist of Québec, are discussed.

During the past few years officers of the Forest Insect Unit of the Division of Entomology have reared a number of specimens of a species of Olesicampe from sawflies of the genus Pikonema. The species differs from any of the named forms of the Canadian National Collection, or in the United States National Museum, according to Mr. R. A. Cushman, to whom I sent specimens, and as far as I can discover there is no name in the literature which would apply to it. The following description is therefore offered.

The following report deals with species of Macrosiphum collected upon Chrysothamnus and Gutierrezia in Utah and nearby areas of the West.

The females of these two species are markedly different in colour, yet the males resemble each other so closely that Bradley (1913) was unable to distinguish between them. Waterston (is Chrystal, 1928) separated the males by the proportions of the hind metatarsus ; that of U. albicornis F. was “barely five times as long as broad,” while in U. flavicornis F. the metatarsus was “nearly seven times as long as broad.” However, Waterston had but two males of one species, and the metatarsal proportions vary intraspecifically ; on this account, the value of the character cannot be determined without a long series.
