Let p be an odd prime. In this paper, we consider the equation and we describe all its solutions. Moreover, we prove that this equation has no solution (x,y,m,n) when n>3 is an odd prime and y is not the sum of two consecutive squares. This extends the work of Tengely [On the diophantine equation x2+q2m=2yp, Acta Arith.127(1) (2007), 71–86].

It is shown that a minimal surface in ℍ2×ℝ is invariant under a one-parameter group of screw motions if and only if it lies in the associate family of helicoids. It is also shown that the conjugate surfaces of the parabolic and hyperbolic helicoids in ℍ2×ℝ are certain types of catenoids.

Let 𝕂 be a field, char(𝕂)≠2, and G a subgroup of GL(n,𝕂). Suppose g↦g♯ is a 𝕂-linear antiautomorphism of G, and then define G1={g∈G∣g♯g=I}. For C being the centraliser 𝒞G (G1) , or any subgroup of the centre 𝒵(G) , define G(C) ={g∈G∣g♯g∈C}. We show that G(C) is a subgroup of G, and study its structure. When C=𝒞G (G1) , we have that G(C) =𝒩G (G1) , the normaliser of G1 in G. Suppose 𝕂 is algebraically closed, 𝒞G (G1) consists of scalar matrices and G1 is a connected subgroup of an affine group G. Under the latter assumptions, 𝒩G (G1) is a self-normalising subgroup of G. This holds for a number of interesting pairs (G,G1); in particular, for those that we call parabolic pairs. As well, for a certain specific setting we generalise a standard result about centres of Borel subgroups.

We construct linear maps from the spaces of quasimodular forms for a discrete subgroup Γ of SL(2,ℝ) to some cohomology spaces of the group Γ and prove that these maps are equivariant with respect to appropriate Hecke operator actions. The results are obtained by using the fact that there is a correspondence between quasimodular forms and certain finite sequences of modular forms.

In this paper we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which the answer to the open problem raised by Ghahramani and Lau (‘Multipliers and modulus on Banach algebras related to locally compact groups’, J. Funct. Anal. 150 (1997), 478–497) is positive.

For n≥5, let T′n denote the unique tree on n vertices with Δ(T′n)=n−2, and let T*n=(V,E) be the tree on n vertices with V ={v0,v1,…,vn−1} and E={v0v1,…,v0vn−3,vn−3vn−2,vn−2vn−1}. In this paper, we evaluate the Ramsey numbers r(Gm,T′n) and r(Gm,T*n) , where Gm is a connected graph of order m. As examples, for n≥8 we have r(T′n,T*n)=r(T*n,T*n)=2n−5 , for n>m≥7 we have r(K1,m−1,T*n)=m+n−3 or m+n−4 according to whether m−1∣n−3 or m−1∤n−3 , and for m≥7 and n≥(m−3)2 +2 we have r(T*m,T*n)=m+n−3 or m+n−4 according to whether m−1∣n−3 or m−1∤n−3 .

It is well known that all saturated formations of finite soluble groups are locally defined and, except for the trivial formation, have many different local definitions. I show that for Lie and Leibniz algebras over a field of characteristic 0, the formations of all nilpotent algebras and of all soluble algebras are the only locally defined formations and the latter has many local definitions. Over a field of nonzero characteristic, a saturated formation of soluble Lie algebras has at most one local definition, but a locally defined saturated formation of soluble Leibniz algebras other than that of nilpotent algebras has more than one local definition.

Lattices of radicals have been extensively studied, for example in the class of associative rings, leading to some interesting results. In this paper we investigate the lattice L of all radicals in the class of all finite groups. We also consider some of its important sublattices. In particular, we prove that the lattice L is closed to being modular, the lattice Lh of all hereditary radicals is a Boolean algebra, and there exists a natural, useful projection of the lattice L onto Lh.

The purpose of this paper is to study the existence of periodic solutions and the topological structure of the solution set of first-order differential equations involving the distributional Henstock–Kurzweil integral. The distributional Henstock–Kurzweil integral is a general integral, which includes the Lebesgue and Henstock–Kurzweil integrals. The main results extend some previously known results in the literature.

Euclid is a well-known two-player impartial combinatorial game. A position in Euclid is a pair of positive integers and the players move alternately by subtracting a positive integer multiple of one of the integers from the other integer without making the result negative. The player who makes the last move wins. There is a variation of Euclid due to Grossman in which the game stops when the two entries are equal. We examine a further variation which we called M-Euclid where the game stops when one of the entries is a positive integer multiple of the other. We solve the Sprague–Grundy function for M-Euclid and compare the Sprague–Grundy functions of the three games.

Let be a commutative algebraic group defined over a number field K. For a prime ℘ in K where has good reduction, let N℘,n be the number of n-torsion points of the reduction of modulo ℘ where n is a positive integer. When is of dimension one and n is relatively prime to a fixed finite set of primes depending on , we determine the average values of N℘,n as the prime ℘ varies. This average value as a function of n always agrees with a divisor function.

Let q be an odd prime. In this paper, we prove that if N is an odd perfect number with qα∥N then σ(N/qα)/qα≠p,p2,p3,p4,p1p2,p21p2, where p,p1, p2 are primes and p1≠p2. This improves a result of Dris and Luca [‘A note on odd perfect numbers’, arXiv:1103.1437v3 [math.NT]]: σ(N/qα)/qα≠1,2,3,4,5. Furthermore, we prove that for K≥1 , if N is an odd perfect number with qα ∥N and σ(N/qα)/qα ≤K, then N≤4K8.

Let A be a finite-dimensional Frobenius cellular algebra with cell datum (Λ,M,C,i). Take a nondegenerate bilinear form f on A. In this paper, we study the relationship among i, f and a certain Nakayama automorphism α. In particular, we prove that the matrix associated with α with respect to the cellular basis is uni-triangular under a certain condition.

Let a,b,c be relatively prime positive integers such that a2+b2=c2. Half a century ago, Jeśmanowicz [‘Several remarks on Pythagorean numbers’, Wiadom. Mat.1 (1955/56), 196–202] conjectured that for any given positive integer n the only solution of (an)x+(bn)y=(cn)z in positive integers is (x,y,z)=(2,2,2). In this paper, we show that (8n)x+(15n)y=(17n)z has no solution in positive integers other than (x,y,z)=(2,2,2).
