On 24th November 1932 our Fellow Major C. J. ffoulkes exhibited a mysterious object that had been found during the restoration of Pevensey Castle. Almost immediately afterwards H.M. Office of Works produced from the same site an object about which there can be no doubt whatever. It is a visor of what is possibly the most striking of all medieval headpieces, the hounskull or pig-faced bascinet. Furthermore, it is the first recorded from an English site.

I have already described (Antiquaries Journal, iv, 329–46) the work carried out at Tell el Obeid during the winter of 1923–4 by the Joint Expedition of the British Museum and the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania: here I shall deal with what was really the major operation of the season, the clearing of the Ziggurat at Ur itself. Upon this site from 120 to 200 workmen were employed continuously for four and a half months, first under the supervision of Messrs. Gadd and Fitz-Gerald, later under that of the whole staff. Khalil of Jerablus was native foreman at Ur while the Tell el Obeid excavations were in progress, and after they were shut down Hamoudi took over the head control of the entire gang; Yahia, Hamoudi's son, acted as clerk on the work and is responsible for a great deal of the photographic work. A number of techniques capable of generating descriptions of data have been developed in the area of Artificial Intelligence. Their suitability for use with a data set compiled to record the details of Anglo-Saxon structures in Britain is considered. An appropriate method which describes the data by means of decision trees is chosen and, after some adaptation, is used to generate descriptions of this data in the form of decision trees. The resulting descriptions compare favourably with interpretations obtained by archaeological analysis.

In 1985, a stone-built tomb of the second or third centuries AD was found in the Samtavro cemetery on the outskirts of Mtskheta, the ancient capital of the Caucasian kingdom of Iberia. Its rich contents included a Mesopotamian cylinder- and an Achaemenid pyramidal stamp-seal, three sardonyx vessels, several pieces of silver plate bearing Greek and Parthian inscriptions, Roman coins and bronze vessels, and distinctive jewellery inlaid with carnelian and turquoise. 1. Soil samples from a number of loci were submitted for examination for non-marine mollusca and I have tabulated the results. Molluscan remains were not common, but sixteen species were determined.

2. The following report is based upon a large collection of animal remains submitted some time ago by Mr. R. S. Newall. They were obtained during excavations at Stonehenge in 1920 to 1926, and come from two superimposed levels, viz. (a) Humus layers, and (b) Silt layer. The whole forms an interesting series to be dealt with under the two headings.
