The marble monument of Tobias Rustat in Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge, has never been attributed to a designer or sculptor on documentary evidence. From a review of Rustat's career and connections, it can be concluded that Grinling Gibbons and his studio were responsible for it, with parts carved by Arnold Quellin and possibly John Nost.

The drawing here discussed, hitherto unpublished, is in the Library of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Its description follows: plan, on three sheets, wove paper, no watermarks, joined together and folded into a volume containing a number of the earliest drawings and engravings in the possession of the Society; 6″× 64¼″, with a drawn scale (50 feet to 1 inch); inscribed (in a later hand), ‘A key to be left open from London Bridge to the Temple 40 foot broad’ and ‘Statut. 19 Car. 2d.’, together with dimensions and names of streets, alleys, waterways, wharfs, &c. (see Appendix). The page of the volume to which the drawing is in part affixed is also inscribed (in the same later hand), ‘An Actual Survey Plann or Draught of a Key to be left open from London Bridge to the Temple.’ (pl. LXVIII).

In certain continental museums there are examples of a curious form of detached St. John's Heads, made of a sort of hard alabaster, all so much alike as to indicate that they must all have been carved in one locality (and very probably in one workshop), and within a fairly short period of time. These heads, which seem clearly not to be English in origin—although by some scholars it has been assumed that they were—differ from medieval English alabaster carvings in character and in style, as well as in material.

1. Soil samples from a number of loci were submitted for examination for non-marine mollusca and I have tabulated the results. Molluscan remains were not common, but sixteen species were determined.

2. The following report is based upon a large collection of animal remains submitted some time ago by Mr. R. S. Newall. They were obtained during excavations at Stonehenge in 1920 to 1926, and come from two superimposed levels, viz. (a) Humus layers, and (b) Silt layer. The whole forms an interesting series to be dealt with under the two headings.

The northern end of the Isle of Man is a low plain, a legacy of the Ice Age, consisting of boulder clay, sands, and gravels, bordered round the coast by a range of sandhills rising from 100 ft. at the break made by the Lhen to over 300 ft. where they cluster around the little village of Kirk Bride. The mouth of the Lhen at a distance of five miles from the foot of the hills, the pre-glacial coastline of the Island, is the reputed landing-place of the Scandinavian settlers who came sailing down from the western isles of Scotland; and for their small and shallow vessels the gravel beach, still known by their name of ‘the Ayres’, was admirably adapted.

In the summer of 1954 the archaeological investigation of a habitation-site of the second half of the first millennium A.D. began on a little island about 30 kilometres west of Stockholm in Lake Mälar. The island, known as Lillö, lies in Ekerö parish in the province of Uppland. The resultant finds were extraordinarily rich and interesting, and the outcome of the investigations now in progress, which will take in also a number of small burial-grounds connected with the habitation-site, is awaited with some excitement.

About 1540 John Leland wrote of the ruins of Old Sarum: ‘Ther was a paroch of the Holy Rode beside in Old-Saresbyri; and an other over the est gate whereof yet some tokens remayne. I do not perceyve that ther wer any mo gates in Old-Saresbyri than 2: one by est, and an other by west. Withoute eche of these gates was a fair suburbe. And in the est suburbe was a paroch chirch of S. John: and ther yet is a chapelle standinge. … Ther hath bene houses in tyme of mind inhabited in the est suburbe of Old-Saresbyri: but now ther is not one house neither within Old-Saresbyri, nor without it, inhabited.’ Since that date much work has been expended on Old Sarum itself, but it may be said with truth that the suburbs have received but scant, if any, attention.
