The dense High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) which spreads out below parts of the Ross Ice Shelf represents a heat-reservoir that can induce ablation if it comes into contact with the ice shelf base. One source of the mechanical energy necessary to lift the dense HSSW is small-scale turbulence induced by the shear of tidal currents at the sea-floor and at the ice shelf base. A one-dimensional Kraus-Turner-type model which is forced by a barotropic tidal current is coupled to the ice shelf by postulating that the ice-water interface is at the freezing point. The calculations indicate that the results of this two-layer approach allow a classification into a freezing and melting regime, depending strongly on the variability of the tidal currents with time and less on the intensity and the corresponding high production rate of turbulent kinetic energy. Based on an extended three-layer model ablation rates exceeding 0.4 m yr−1 are obtained in the south-eastern part of the Ross Ice Shelf. Advection processes in the mixed layer directly beneath the ice shelf base are not considered. These results can therefore be regarded as indicating the maximum amount of ablation occuring in the deeper reaches of the ice shelf cavity. Application of the three-layer model to the J9-area in the central Ross Ice Shelf indicate a tidally induced vertical heat flux of 1.8 W m−2 and a corresponding melting rate of 0.17 m yr−1. As supported by ice core measurements, however, an accumulation rate of 0.03–0.05 m yr−1 is estimated due to advection of freshwater produced immediately south of the J9-area.

We determined the composition and structure of late summer eukaryotic protist assemblages along a west–east transect in the Amundsen Sea. We used state-of-the-art molecular approaches, such as automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA) and 454-pyrosequencing, combined with pigment measurements via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to study the protist assemblage. We found characteristic offshore and inshore communities. In general, total chlorophyll a and microeukaryotic contribution were higher in inshore samples. Diatoms were the dominant group across the entire area, of which Eucampia sp. and Pseudo-nitzschia sp. were dominant inshore and Chaetoceros sp. was dominant offshore. At the most eastern station, the assemblage was dominated by Phaeocystis sp. Under the ice, ciliates showed their highest and haptophytes their lowest abundance. This study delivers a taxon detailed overview of the eukaryotic protist composition in the Amundsen Sea during the summer 2010.

The native terrestrial food web of sub-Antarctic islands is dominated by decomposers with rare herbivores and almost no predators. As a consequence of increasing human activities, the number of alien plants and invertebrates species, including phytophagous species, has been dramatically rising on these islands. These repeated introductions seem likely to have a great impact on the ecosystem functioning. This is the first detailed study on species diversity, host range and spatial distribution of aphids on French sub-Antarctic islands. Six cosmopolitan and polyphagous aphid species have been recorded on these islands. Five species have been found in the wild where they colonized native and introduced plants, and one species was confined to a glasshouse. Aphids colonized a littoral band and were limited to below 200 m a.s.l. Their spatial distribution is constrained by host plant distribution and temperature. The two dominant species, Myzus ascalonicus and Rhopalosiphum padi, are obligately parthenogenetic in these islands and have been observed to be active on plants during winter. The other species are also presumably obligate parthenogens because of the absence of host plants where sexual reproduction can occur. We suggest that polyphagy and parthenogenesis are major biological traits that influence colonization success by aphids in a sub-Antarctic environment.

Lake Wilson, a perennially ice-capped, deep (>100 m) lake at 80°S in southern Victoria Land was investigated in January 1993. Water chemistry and physical structure showed three distinct layers; an upper c. 35 m mixed layer of low salinity, moderately turbid water; a less turbid mid layer, 20 m thick of slightly higher salinity and supersaturated with oxygen; and a deep 20 m brackish layer (conductivity c. 4000 μS cm−1) with anoxic conditions in the lower 5 m. Extreme supersaturation of N2O (up to 400 times air saturation) together with high nitrate concentration (4000 mg m−3) was recorded in the deep layer. Phytoplankton biomass and photosynthetic activity was confined to the upper mixed layer and the band of supersaturated dissolved oxygen located at 40–55 m appears to represent a relict layer from when the lake level was lower. The evidence from a comparison of profiles between 1975 and 1993 suggests that Lake Wilson has risen 25 m since 1975, synchronous with a period of lake level rise in the McMurdo Dry Valleys lakes to the north at 77°S. Geochemical diffusion models indicate that Lake Wilson had evaporated to a smaller brine lake about 1000 yrs BP, which also fits the pattern shown by the McMurdo Dry Valleys lakes. Climate changes influencing lake levels have thus covered a wide area of southern Victoria Land.

Reproductive characteristics are compared of the nototheniids Trematomus bernacchii and T. hansoni and the channichthyid Chionodraco hamatus caught in summer at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) and caught all the year round in the waters off Casey Station (Mawson Sea). Whilst spawning of T. bernacchii took place in October–November off Casey and probably at Terra Nova Bay, the spawning period of T. hansoni differed between the sites (September–November off Casey, December–February at Terra Nova Bay). The spawning period also differed between sites for C. hamatus (August–October off Casey, December–February at Terra Nova Bay). Fecundity was higher and egg size was lower in nototheniid species (c, 8000 eggs of 3–4 mm) than in channichthyid (c. 4000 eggs of 4–5 mm). Moreover, the fecundity was lower and egg size higher in the specimens from Terra Nova Bay when compared to Casey.

Large-scale bedrock morphology and relief of two key areas, the Jutulsessen Nunatak and the Jutulstraumen ice stream are used to discuss glascial history and landscape development in western and central Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Two main landform components were identified: well-defined summit plateau surfaces and a typical alpine glacial landscape. The flat, high-elevation plateau surfaces previously were part of one or several continuous regional planation surfaces. In western Dronning Maud Land, overlying cover rocks of late Palaeozoic age show that the planation surface(s) existed in the early Permian, prior to the break-up of Gondwana. A well-develoment escarpment, a mega landform typical for passive continental margins, bounds the palaeosurface remnants to the north for a distance of at least 700 km. The Cenozoic glacial landscape, incised in the palaeosurface and escarpment, is exemplified by Jutulsessen Nunatak, where a c. 1.2 km deep glacial valley system is developed. However, the prominent Penck-Jutul Trough represents some of the deepest dissection of the palaeosurface. This originally tectonic feature is today occupied by the Jutulstraumen ice stream. New topographic data show that the bed of the Penck-Jutul Trough is situated 1.9±1.1 km below sea level, and that the total landscape relief is at least 4.2 km. Today's relief is a result of several processes, including tectonic faulting, subaerial weathering, fluvial erosion, and glacial erosion. It is probable that erosion by ice streams has deepened the tectonic troughs of Dronning Maud Land since the onset of ice sheet glaciation in the Oligocene, and continues today. An attempt is made to identify major events in the long-term landscape development of Dronning Maud Land, since the break-up of the Gondwana continent.

This paper describes measurements of concentrations of cosmogenic 26Al, 10Be and 21Ne in quartz from bedrock surfaces in the Transantarctic Mountains where stratigraphic and geomorphic evidence shows that the surfaces were covered by ice in the past, but were not glacially eroded during periods of ice cover. It then explores to what extent this information can be used to learn about past ice sheet change. First, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in sandstone bedrock surfaces at two sites in the McMurdo Dry Valleys near 77°S are consistent with an equilibrium between nuclide production and loss by surface erosion and radioactive decay. They are most easily explained by a scenario in which: i) sites more than c. 100 m above the present ice surface were almost never ice-covered and eroded steadily at 0.5–1.5 m Ma-1, and ii) sites near the present ice margin experienced similar erosion rates when ice-free, but have been covered by cold-based, non-erosive glacier ice as much as half of the time during the past several million years. Nuclide concentrations in granite bedrock at a site in the Quartz Hills near 85°S, on the other hand, have not reached production-erosion equilibrium, thus retaining evidence of the time they were first exposed to the cosmic ray flux. Nuclide concentrations at these sites are most easily explained by 4–6 Ma exposure, extremely low erosion rates of 5–10 cm Ma-1 during periods of exposure, and only very short periods of cold-based, non-erosive ice cover.

The main water body at Hope Bay, Boeckella Lake, was sampled at four sites for phytoplankton during summer 1991 to assess the influence of nutrients from nearby penguin rookeries on both phytoplankton density and composition. The site located at the base of the rookeries had total phosphorus values comparable to those reported from the most eutrophic Antarctic lakes. During the ice-free period most of the Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae recorded were concentrated at this site. Phytoplankton density increased strongly in the area opposite to the rookeries where ice began to form; an under-ice bloom of Ochromonas aff. ovalis (Chrysophyceae) was observed in this area.

The first extended baseline studies of total gaseous mercury (TGM) and dimethylmercury (DMM) in Antarctica are reported. Mean TGM concentrations of 0.52, 0.60 and 0.52 ng m−3 were obtained for three consecutive years at the southern tip of Ross Island (77°S). The levels of DMM in Antarctica are less than 10% of the TGM, and frequently fall below the limit of detection. These results represent the lowest TGM concentrations recorded globally and extend into polar regions the observation of a decrease in atmospheric mercury concentration with increasing latitude.

Snow temperatures measured at around 10 m depth over the period 1957–1992 have been used to derive a map of mean annual snow surface temperature corrected to sea level over the Antarctic Peninsula and Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf. Multiple linear regression analysis has been used to calculate rates of change with latitude, longitude, altitude and time, for data to the west and east of the topographic divide running along the spine of the Antarctic Peninsula. Climate warming on the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf follows the trend observed at Halley Bay, a coastal station nearby. High spatial variability leads to uncertainty in the temporal trend for mean annual snow surface temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula but there is some indication that the large trends observed at Faraday and Marguerite Bay, two stations on the west coast of the peninsula, are attenuated inland.

The ecology of two meltwater streams on King George Island, Ornithologists Creek (with penguin rookeries close to its lower reaches) and Petrified Forest Creek (a highly oligotrophic system), was studied during the 1996–97 summer season. To estimate seasonal productivity of the periphyton and to establish which environmental parameters influenced periphyton growth most strongly, two types of artificial substrata (fibreglass nets – ash-free dry weight (AFDW), and microscope slides – Chlorophyll a (Chl a)) were tested in situ. Thus relative periphyton productivity (RPP) reflects algal colonization and growth as well as losses due to cell mortality and abrasive action of moving sediments. The Petrified Forest Creek was more productive (AFDW = 108.63 μg cm−2 d−1, Chl a = 0.35 μg g cm−2 d−1) than the Ornithologists Creek (AFDW = 69.90 μg cm−2 d−-1, Chl a = 0.26 μg cm−2 d−1). RPP differed both along the streams, and during the season. Significant positive or negative relationships (generalized linear models) were found between RPP and streamwater ‘physico-chemical parameters’ and ‘geomorphological-geographical characteristics’ of the streams' catchments. In addition, in the lower reaches of both streams almost no active colonization or growth was recorded. In the Petrified Forest Creek, the periphyton biomass was so high that mainly passive organic matter deposition occurred. By contrast, in the lower reach of Ornithologists Creek, periphyton colonization and growth was around zero, being negatively influenced by penguin excrement. Ornithologists Creek was richer in nutrients (DIN, DRP), which also fluctuated more widely along its length and throughout the season, than in the Petrified Forest Creek. Parameters associated with the inorganic carbon cycle of the streamwater reflect higher RPP in Petrified Forest Creek. Moreover, RPP was higher in stream reaches with higher amounts of gravel boulders on the bottom.

Martialia hyadesi were collected from fishing vessels at the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone (APFZ) and the Patagonian Shelf Edge (PASE) during the 1989 austral autumn and winter. Squid were measured, weighed, assigned a maturity stage and the paired statoliths were removed. Statolith sections revealed concentric growth rings using light and scanning electron microscopy. Counts of these putative daily micro-growth increments were made directly and by an estimating procedure. Energy dispersive (ED) and wavelength dispersive (WD) x-ray analyses of Sr and Ca content were made on subsamples of statolith sections. Estimated increment counts, which were generally higher than direct counts, were adopted for routine application. Back calculated hatching dates showed that a single cohort, with a relatively narrow size range, was sampled in each geographical area. Back calculations suggested that M. hyadesi at the APFZ had hatched in the austral winter and those at the PASE had hatched in the spring. At the PASE, growth rate was estimated to be some 30% higher than at the APFZ and PASE squid were more mature at a given age. The hypothesis that the Sr:Ca ratio along the growth axis of the statolith contains information on thermal history was examined. Sr:Ca ratios in the statolith fell in the range 0.009–0.017 and varied systematically but this variation did not apparently relate to season and ratios were not significantly different between geographical areas. A consistent feature was a relatively low Sr:Ca ratio at the time of hatching. According to the Sr:Ca thermometer hypothesis this is consistent with spawning in relatively warm water but it could equally be due to depositional differences during early statolith growth. The Sr:Ca thermometer hypothesis could neither be confirmed nor rejected by the data but there is evidence that strontium varies systematically with age in the squid statolith.

Studies of the recovery of the fauna following the 1967–70 eruptions at Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, have made it one of the best-studied marine sites of the Southern Ocean for biodiversity. Using SCUBA we surveyed the mega- and macro-epifauna of its subtidal zones in the entrance (Neptune's Bellows), immediately inside the caldera (Whaler's Bay) and well within the caldera (Fumarole Bay). Richness declined from 10 phyla, 13 classes and 35 species at Neptune's Bellows to three phyla, four classes and five species in Whaler's Bay and just two phyla, classes and species at Fumarole Bay. Amongst the 35 species we found at Neptune's Bellows, 14 were previously unrecorded from Deception Island. Despite many ship visits and amongst the warmest sea temperatures in the Southern Ocean, the Non Indigenous Species (NIS) algae were not found in our survey. Deception Island has been recolonized considerably since the recent eruptions, but many taxa are still very poorly represented and the colonizers present are mainly those with planktotrophic larvae. Examination of the literature revealed that to date 163 named marine species have been found within the caldera as well as at least 50 more morphospecies, which are yet to be identified. Species accumulation has consistently increased across eight recent samples reported and the number of species reported there is likely to reach 300 when taxa such as the nematodes are identified to species level. This represents a first meaningful total species estimate for an Antarctic marine area and, as the site is comparatively impoverished, indicates how rich the surrounding Antarctic shelf must be.

We present 21Ne exposure ages of erosional glaciogenic rock surfaces on nunataks in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica: i) in the Prince Albert Mountains and ii) near Mesa Range. These nunataks are located directly at the margin of the polar plateau and therefore provide an immediate record of ice volume changes of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, not biased by ice shelf grounding or narrow valley sections downstream the outlet glaciers. The sampling locations overlook the present ice surface by less than 200 m, but were last covered by ice 3.5 Ma bp (minimum age, not corrected for erosion). This strongly indicates that the ice sheet has not been substantially thicker than today since at least the early Pliocene, which supports the hypothesis of a stable East Antarctic Ice Sheet. First absolute ages are reported for the alpine topography above the erosive trimline that typically marks the upper limit of glacial activity in northern Victoria Land. Unexpectedly low nuclide concentrations suggest that erosion rates on the alpine topography are considerably higher due to the steep slopes than those affecting flat erosional surfaces carrying Antarctic tors.

This study describes the relation of the phosphorus chemical speciation in surface sediments with input processes in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. The sediments were analysed with a sequential extraction for phosphorus fractionation to measure: exchangeable P (Pexch), iron oxyhydroxide bound P (P-Fe), authigenic P (Auth-P), detrital P (Detrital-P) and organic P (Porg). The study revealed that Detrital-P (39–70%) was the main sedimentary phosphorus forms and Auth-P (40–54%) was the second largest pool. The average percentage of each fraction of P followed the sequence: Detrital-P (41%) > Auth-P (37%) > P-Fe (12%) > Porg = Pexch (5%). Spatial differences in grain size distribution were found. Silt and clay factions were predominant in the inlets, whereas sand and gravel were the main components in Central bay (unofficial name). Values were extremely low for organic carbon (< 0.30%) and total nitrogen (< 0.17%). Total sulfur was lower than 0.15%, except for Mackellar Inlet where values were 1%. The dominance of detrital apatite in the total sedimentary phosphorus demonstrates the importance of terrestrial inputs from ice melting in governing the abundance and speciation of sedimentary phosphorus in the Admiralty Bay sediments.

Deception Island volcano (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) has been monitored in summer surveys since 1994. We analyse the seismicity recorded from 1999–2011 with a local network and seismic arrays. It includes long-period (LP) events, volcanic tremor episodes and volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes. Long-period events are conspicuous, ranging from 58 (2007–08) to 2868 events (2003–04). The highest number of LP events in one day is 243 on 2 February 2001, and there are several discrete periods of intense LP activity. These variations may be related to alterations in the shallow hydrothermal system of Deception Island. The number of VT earthquakes recorded during the surveys range from 4 (2008–09) to 125 (2007–08). In some periods VT distributions are temporally and spatially homogeneous, with a generally low level of seismicity. In other periods we observe a peak of VT activity lasting a few days, concentrated in a particular area. These two patterns may respond to different processes, involving regional stresses and local tectonic destabilization induced by volcanic activity. Overall, this study indicates that over the period 1999–2011 the volcano presented a moderate level of seismicity, and suggests that there has been no significant reactivation of the volcano since the 1999 seismic crisis.

Present day Southern Ocean benthic biodiversity is the result of climatic changes based on the break-up of Gondwana in the Cretaceous and the Cenozoic and the physiological potential of the fauna to cope with the climatic deterioration. Though many taxa survived the thermal drop in ocean bottom temperatures, zoogeographic ranges changed and some faunal elements even became extinct, e.g. benthic decapods and teleost fish, opening up new ecological niches and the potential for enormous adaptive radiations within some taxa, like the amphipods and isopods (peracarid crustaceans) and notothenioid fish. Ice-sheet extensions and retreats might have enhanced speciation processes as well as eurybathy. Biodiversity on the Antarctic shelf is high within the polychaetes, molluscs, and echinoderms, and within the amphipods and isopods possibly due to the Cenozoic extinction of the benthic decapods. Moreover, some shelf areas are characterized by accumulations of large suspension feeders like poriferans, bryozoans, ascidians, gorgonians, and hydroids. Palaeoclimatic changes also caused that many taxa of the modern, present day Southern Ocean benthic organisms are characterized by gigantism, slow metabolism, longevity, and a reduced number of offspring combined with late maturation. However, our biological knowledge is mainly confined to Southern Ocean shelf organism; we do not know much about the composition, biodiversity and zoogeography of the Southern Ocean deep sea animals. On this background the deep sea expeditions ANDEEP were born and the background and first results of these are presented herein.

Little information is available regarding predator-prey interactions in High-Antarctic coastal systems. In this study, the predation of Trematomus bernacchii (Pisces: Nototheniidae) on Adamussium colbecki (Mollusca: Pectinidae) is described and the related impact on the population structure of the mollusc is hypothesized. Fishes and scallops were collected during several expeditions between 1990/91 and 1997/98 summers, in nearshore waters at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica). Adamussium colbecki was the main food item of T. bernacchii and an ontogenetic prey-size selection was observed. The predation was mainly on medium size classes of the scallop. These were lacking in the A. colbecki population sampled in the same period suggesting that the impact of fish-feeding on the size structure of the natural population of the mollusc may be substantial. Two size classes of the Adamussium population were not preyed on. Large adults avoid predation either because of the limits for mouth gape in the fish or by swimming avoidance capability, while smaller scallops may not be preyed upon because they are attached through byssus threads to very mobile large adults.

The late Proterozoic basement of the Porthos Range northern Prince Charles Mountains, east Antarctica, is dominated by a suite of felsic to mafic granulites derived from igneous and, less importantly, sedimentary protoliths. Compositionally, they are broadly similar to granulites occurring along the Mac. Robertson Land coast and southern Prince Charles Mountains. Ultramafic to mafic orthopyroxene' + clinopyroxene granulites with relict igneous layering occur as lenses within the felsic to mafic granulites, and show compositional evidence of a cumulate origin. The felsic to mafic granulites are intruded by several large charnockite bodies that have similarities to the Mawson Charnockite, and may have formed via a two-stage partial melting process. The charnockite and host granulites are chemically very similar, and both may have been derived from a common middle to lower crustal source region. Undepleted K/Rb ratios suggest retention of original chemistry, with variations being due to fractionation processes. Normalized trace element patterns resembling modern-day arc settings suggest that the Porthos Range granulites were possibly generated in a subduction zone environment.

Antarctic fishes survive freezing through the secretion of antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs), which bind to ice crystals to inhibit their growth. This mode of action implies that ice crystals must be present internally for AFGPs to function. The entry and internal accumulation of ice is likely to be lethal, however, so how do fishes survive in its presence? We propose a novel function for the interaction between internal ice and AFGPs, namely the promotion of ice uptake by splenic phagocytes. We show here that i) external mucus of Antarctic notothenioids contains AFGPs and thus has a potential protective role against ice entry, ii) AFGPs are distributed widely through the extracellular space ensuring that they are likely to come into immediate contact with ice that penetrates their protective barriers, and iii) using AFGP-coated nanoparticles as a proxy for AFGP adsorbed onto ice, we suggest that internal ice crystals are removed from the circulation through phagocytosis, primarily in the spleen. We argue that intracellular sequestration in the spleen minimizes the risks associated with circulating ice and enables the fish to store the ice until it can be dealt with at a later date, possibly by melting during a seasonal warming event.
