The fattening process of male cattle was divided into three weight stages: 150 to 250kg, 250 to 400kg, 400 to 490kg. Seventy animals were fed either a control (C) diet containing 10·3 MJ/kg metabolizable energy and some hay, or an experimental (E) diet containing 8 4 MJ/kg, in which NaOH-treated wheat straw (450g/kg) and long straw (50 g/kg) were incorporated.

The diets were given during the three weight stages to five treatment groups as follows: 1. C-C-C. 2. E-E-E. 3. C-E-E, 4. C-E-C, and 5. E-E-C. The average daily gain and metabolizable energy conversion ratios were: 1344, 980, 1127, 1145, 1094g/day and 71·4, 90·6, 77·3, 73·7, 79·8 MJ/kg live weight, respectively. The saving of concentrates plus hay in groups 2 to 5 compared with group 1 was 1·33, 1·65, 0·84 and 0·91 kg/kg live weight respectively, and the concentrates plus hay by straw replacement ratio was 3·80, 2·12, 2·00 and 3·06, respectively. Dressing percentage and percentage of fat in the large depots of the animals in groups 1 to 5 were 57·2, 58·7, 58·3, 57·8, 57·9 and 3·88, 2·28, 2·52, 3·42, 2·81, respectively. The results suggest that it is not economical to feed the E-diet to animals before they reach a weight of 250 kg, and that termination of the feeding process by a highly concentrated diet is not advantageous.

Primary growths of perennial ryegrass and red clover were ensiled with formic acid (2 1/t fresh crop), o an equal quantity of formic acid together with formaldehyde (46 or 49 g/kg crude protein in the ryegrass or red clover respectively). The four silages were offered ad libitum to 12 groups, each of five British Friesian steer calves, either alone or with urea or maize starch supplements at 18·4 or 185·2 g/kg total dry-matter intake respectively.

Digestible organic matter and digestible energy intake, live-weight gain, carcass weight, nitrogen retention and all digestibility measurements were higher on the ryegrass silages than on the red clover silages. However, dry-matter intake was higher on the red clover silages.

Formaldehyde treatment reduced lactic and total acid content, and protein degradation in the silages. It also increased intake, live-weight gain and nitrogen retention on ryegrass but not on red clover, the effect being greater when the urea supplement was given. Digestibility measurements were depressed by formaldehyde treatment, although cellulose digestibility was only depressed in the ryegrass silage.

Supplementation with starch depressed silage intake and nitrogen and cellulose digestibility, but increased dry matter, organic matter and energy digestibilities, digestible organic matter and digestible energy intakes, live-weight gain and carcass weight. The positive intake, live-weight gain and carcass weight responses were greater on the silages treated with formic acid, while the digestibility and the live-weight gain responses were greater on the red clover silages. Starch supplementation did not improve nitrogen retention.

The different animal production responses to formaldehyde treatment on the ryegrass and red clover silages are discussed.

1. Body shape and carcass composition have been measured in a dated series of Romney-Southdown cross and Australian Merino sheep foetuses.

2. Large differences in shape exist between the two breed groups and these result from growth rate differences in certain components of the bone and muscle tissue.

3. Carcass composition at any particular foetal weight, however, is more uniform. In relation to body weight, the Merino has a higher proportion of bone in the body but the proportion of muscle is the same in both breed groups. Nevertheless, the distribution of muscle tissue is changed as there s i a higher proportion of muscle in the hind limb of the Romney-Southdown cross.

In a 2 × 2 × 2 experiment, 296 Scottish Blackface ewes were fed to achieve one of two levels of body condition (high: condition scores ^2·75; low: condition scores ^2·50) by 2 weeks before joining with rams. Half of the ewes of each condition score were fed dried grass pellets ad libitum and 300 g hay per head daily, between 2 weeks before and 8 days after joining, while the remaining ewes were offered a live-weight maintenance ration comprising 750 g pellets and 400 g hay per head daily. From 8 days after joining the intake of all ewes was gradually changed, over a 2-week period, to 1250 g pellets and 400 g hay per head daily. Two days before joining, half of the ewes of each condition/intake group were passively immunized against testosterone. A total of 99 ewes were slaughtered 18 days after joining and their ovulation rate at the first mating determined. Ovulation rates were significantly affected by immunization (immunized: 2·31, control: 1·86, pooled s.e. = 0·055; P < 0·01) and food intake (ad libitum: 2·24, maintenance: I 92, pooled s.e. = 0·055; P < 0·05) but not by body condition at mating (high: 2·15, low: 2·02, pooled s.e. = 0·059; P > 0·05). Lambing rates were dependent on treatment (immunized: 1·82 control: 1·62, pooled s.e. = 0·044; P < 0·01), food intake (ad libitum: 1·85, maintenance: 1·59, pooled s.e. = 0·043; P < 0·01) and body condition (high: 1·82, low: 1·62, pooled s.e. = 0·044; P < 001). In ewes in a high body condition at mating, the effects of intake and immunization were additive but in ewes in low condition, immunization induced little improvement in performance in ewes fed ad libitum. Circulating antibody titres were lower in ewes fed ad libitum than in ewes offered a maintenance ration (1: 416 v. 1: 534, pooled s.e. = 14; P < 0·001), but ovulation rates and litter sizes were not related to titres.

Climate change is producing an increase on extreme weather events around the world such as flooding, drought and extreme ambient temperatures impacting animal production and animal welfare. At present, there is a lack of studies addressing the effects of climatic conditions associated with energy intake in finishing cattle in South American feed yards. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of environmental variables and level of metabolizable energy intake above maintenance requirements (MEI) on performance and carcass quality of steers. In each experiment (winter and summer), steers were fed with 1.85 or 2.72 times of their requirements of metabolizable energy of maintenance. A total of 24 crossbred steers per experiment were used and located in four pens (26.25 m2/head) equipped with a Calan Broadbent Feeding System. Animals were fed with the same diet within each season, varying the amount offered to adjust the MEI treatments. Mud depth, mud scores, tympanic temperature (TT), environmental variables, average daily gain, respiration rates and carcass characteristics plus three thermal comfort indices were collected. Data analysis considered a factorial arrangement (Season and MEI). In addition, a repeated measures analysis was performed for TT and respiration rate. Mean values of ambient temperature, solar radiation and comfort thermal indices were greater in the summer experiment as expected (P<0.005). The mean values of TT were higher in steers fed with higher MEI and also in the summer season. The average daily gain was greater during summer v. winter (1.10±0.11 v. 0.36±0.06) kg/day, also when steers were fed 2.72 v. 1.85 MEI level (0.89±0.12 v. 0.57±0.10) kg/day. In summer, respiration rate increased in 41.2% in the afternoon. In winter, muddy conditions increased with time of feeding, whereas wind speed and rainfall had significant effects on TT and average daily gain. We conclude that MEI and environmental variables have direct effects on the physiology and performance of steers, including TT and average daily gain, particularly during the winter. In addition, carcass characteristics were affected by season but not by the level of MEI. Finally, due to the high variability of data as well as the small number of animals assessed in these experiments, more studies on carcass characteristics under similar conditions are required.

Data from 2032 Uruguayan Aberdeen Angus cows under extensive management and recording practices were analysed with Bayesian threshold-liability sire models, to assess genetic variability in calving success (CS), defined as a different binary trait for each of the second (CS2), third (CS3) and fourth (CS4) calving opportunities. Sire (herd) variances ranged from 0.08 to 0.11 (0.10 to 0.20) and heritability from 0.27 to 0.35, with large credibility intervals. Correlations between herd effects on CS at different calving opportunities were positive. Genetic correlation between CS2 and CS4 was positive (0.68), whereas those involving adjacent calving opportunities (CS2–CS3 and CS3–CS4) were negative, at −0.39 and −0.54, respectively. The residual correlation CS2–CS3 was negative (−0.32). The extent of uncertainty associated with the posterior estimates of the parameters was further evaluated through simulation, assuming different true values (−0.4, −0.2, +0.2 and +0.4) for the genetic correlations and changes in the degree of belief parameters of the inverse Wishart priors for the sire covariance matrix. Although inferences were not sharp enough, CS appears to be moderately heritable. The quality of data recording should be improved, in order to effect genetic improvement in female fertility.

In the decade up to the outbreak of World War II. in 1939, the counties of Devon and Cornwall accounted for nearly 10% of the pig population of England and Wales. It is an exporting area for all classes of livestock, but the preponderance of exports over home consumption is indicated in pigs more than any other class of livestock as the figures in Table I., based on information obtained in a survey into the movements and slaughtering of livestock in 1930, show.*

My work during the last few years has been to some extent concerned with attempts at the control of mastitis under ordinary farming conditions, and in speaking to you today I will confine my remarks to what I consider in that particular region of experience is relevant to your tasks and interests. I make no claim to have carried out any fundamental research on the micro-organisms associated with infections of the bovine udder. My aim has been rather to apply the results of primary scientific enquiries carried out at various research centres to practical problems in the field.

It will be appreciated that conditions existing on the average farm differ in many respects from those that pertain on the farms and premises of the field stations and research centres, where a more direct, complete, and constant control can be exercised by the research worker over animal management, milking practices and general hygiene, than is possible on farms scattered over a wide country area and where the investigator must of necessity work from a position somewhat remote. Much in the way of control has to be left in these circumstances to the farmer, his herdsman and the practising veterinary surgeon. The personal element therefore, will always weigh very heavily. The test of any scheme or programme designed to control mastitis is: Can it work under such conditions and produce the desired results ? I am convinced from my own experience that it can.

There is little doubt that the lowest costs of beef or milk production are achieved when the animals are grazed on pastures from which they obtain most or all of their sustenance. On the other hand the most expensive phase of cattle production is the winter period when stock are usually housed and must be hand-fed. The results from numerous investigations firmly support these assertions. In the large mixed farming area of the North-East of Scotland virtually no grazing is normally available from the middle or end of October until the beginning of May when normal grass growth has resumed.

One of the advantages of keeping growing fattening pigs outside on pasture is that they are more healthy than those indoors (Fishwick, 1935), provided fresh ground, free from parasitic infections, is available. Reviewing American work, Morrison (1936) concluded that faster liveweight gains and improved efficiency of food utilisation are obtained from pigs full-fed on pasture compared with those full-fed in dry lot (also Fishwick, 1935; Smith et al., 1950). Pigs grazing outside in Great Britain usually receive enough sun on their skin to produce sufficient vitamin D to meet their requirements, except in adverse weather (Braude, 1954). Pigs at pasture have access to soil, which is a source of minerals (Davidson, 1930) and of vitamin B12 (Duckworth, 1955). Cunha et al. (1948) found that 5% of soil in a purified pig ration stimulated appetite and increased the haemoglobin value of the blood. Biggar (reported by Boden, 1952) obtained greater liveweight increases from pigs folded on pasture than from those folded on bare soil, showing that herbage is of value in addition to fresh air, sunlight and soil.

Differences in how individuals cope with stressful conditions (e.g. novel/unfamiliar environment, social isolation and increases in human contact) can explain the variability in data collection from nutrient digestibility trials. We used the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), which is under process of domestication and shows high individual behavioral distinctiveness in reactions toward humans, to test the hypothesis that behavioral differences play a role in nutrient digestibility. We assessed the individual behavioral traits of 24 adult male collared peccaries using both the ‘behavioral coding’ and the ‘subjective ratings’ approaches. For the behavioral coding assessment, we recorded the hourly frequency of behaviors potentially indicative of stress during the 30-day habituation period to the experimental housing conditions. The subjective ratings were performed based on the individuals’ reactions to three short-term challenge tests (novel environment, novel object and threat from a capture net) over a period of 56 days. During the last 26 days, the collared peccaries were fed diets either high (n = 12) or low (n = 12) in dietary fiber levels, and we determined the total tract apparent digestibility of nutrients. The individual subjective ratings showed consistency in the correlated measures of ‘relaxedness’, ‘quietness’ and ‘satisfaction’ across the three challenge tests, which were combined to produce z score ratings of one derived variable (‘calmness’). Individual frequency of BPIS/h and calmness scores were negatively correlated and both predicted the total tract digestibility of acid detergent fiber (ADF), which ranged from 0.41 to 0.79. The greater the calmness z scores (i.e. calmer individuals), the greater the total tract digestibility of ADF. In contrast, the higher the frequency of BPIS/h, the lower the total tract digestibility of ADF. Therefore, our results provide evidence that by selecting calmer collared peccaries, there will be an increase in their capacity to digest dietary fiber.

Multiple trait selection indexes in pig breeding programmes should take into account the population structure and time delay between parent selection and expressions of traits in all production levels next to the trait impacts on economic efficiency of production systems. Gene flow procedures could be used for the correct evaluation of maternal and direct traits of pig breeds involved in breeding or crossbreeding systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to expand a previously developed bioeconomic model and computer program to calculate the marginal economic values by including a gene flow procedure to calculate the economic weights for maternal and direct traits in pig breeds. The new program was then applied to the three-way crossbreeding system of the Czech National Programme for Pig Breeding. Using this program, the marginal economic values of traits for dam breeds Czech Large White in the dam position and Czech Landrace in the sire position, and for the sire breed Pietrain were weighted by the number of discounted gene expressions of selected parents of each breed summarised within all links of the crossbreeding system during the 8-year investment period. Economic weights calculated in this way were compared with the approximate economic weights calculated previously without a gene flow procedure. Taking into account the time delay between parent selection and trait expression (using discounting with half-year discount rates of 2% or 5%) and including more than one generation of parent progeny had little impact on the relative economic importance of maternal and direct traits of breeds involved in the evaluated three-way crossbreeding system. These results indicated that this gene-flow method could be foregone when estimating the relative economic weights of traits in pig crossbreeding systems applying artificial insemination at all production levels.

The performance of pigs is affected by the rate of nutrient absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, which depends in turn strongly on the rate of stomach emptying. The 13C breath test provides a non-invasive diagnostic tool to measure gastric emptying patterns. Despite the wide acceptance of this method in human intervention studies, it has not found its way to the domain of animal sciences. In this study, we used the breath test to measure gastric emptying in young growing pigs using [1-13C] octanoic acid to trace digesta solids and [1-13C] glycine to study liquids. Pigs were fed a starch-rich diet, varying in starch source (isolated starch from barley, maize or high-amylose maize) or form (isolated barley starch, ground barley or extruded barley), after which 13CO2 enrichment was frequently measured during 11 h. Outliers in 13CO2 enrichment in the response curve of each pig were identified with a Cookʼs distance outlier test in combination with a leave-one-out analysis. Effects of experimental treatments on breath test parameters were tested using a GLM. In general, pigs were easy to train and the tailor-made mask allowed effortless sampling. Gastric emptying of all pigs followed a biphasic pattern, with a higher 13C recovery during the first peak. The first peak in gastric emptying of solids reached its maximum enrichment within 2 h after feeding in all cases. For digesta liquids, this peak was reached earlier for pigs fed ground barley (2.2 h after feeding), compared to pigs fed diets containing isolated starch (2.8 h after feeding). The second peak in gastric emptying of solids was reached later for pigs fed ground barley (5.9 h after feeding), compared with pigs fed extruded barley (4.5 h after feeding) and pigs fed diets containing isolated barley starch (4.8 h after feeding). In conclusion, the 13C breath test is a convenient, non-invasive tool to gain more insights into the gastric emptying pattern of pigs.

Path analysis was applied to correlations among lamb carcass measurements. Correlations were obtained from lamb carcasses averaging 15·7 kg and 270 g fat per kg carcass weight. Correlations were adjusted to represent within breed, sex and management group relationships. The purpose of the analysis was to study the relationships of carcass weight with carcass measurements and to identify carcass measurements that are independent other than through their relationships with carcass chemical fat concentration and carcass weight. The direct effect of live weight on all carcass measurements was positive. Thus, heavier carcasses with the same fat concentration had larger fat and tissue depths, muscle measurements, leg measurements and kidney fat weights. The results of correlations among the residuals suggest that fat depths C and J, specific gravity, muscle width A and kidney fat weight are nearly independent estimates of carcass composition in the sense that they are only correlated through their relationships with carcass weight and carcass fat composition. Robust predictors of carcass composition were developed by first adjusting carcass measurements for the direct effects of carcass weight and then computing regressions on the adjusted measurements. These predictors appeared to be better predictors of environmental and genetic differences than least-squares multiple regression yet reduced the accuracy of within group prediction only slightly.

During a survey of beef production in East Anglia carcasses of 163 Friesian, 87 Dairy Shorthorn and 45 Aberdeen-Angus × Friesian steers and 44 Aberdeen-Angus × Friesian heifers were measured and scored by visual assessment for fat development. They were also graded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Age data indicated that the Friesian steers were, on average, younger at slaughter than the other groups, but they were incomplete and comparison was based on carcasses of the same weight. The Dairy Shorthorn steers had higher mean values than Friesians in three of the carcass measurements taken. The Dairy Shorthorns had a higher average fatness score and a higher proportion of Grade A carcasses. Aberdeen-Angus × Friesian steers had lower mean values for measurements of the hind leg, higher fatness scores and a higher proportion of Grade A carcasses than either of the two pure breeds. Aberdeen-Angus × Friesian heifers had lower mean values for measurements of both fore and hind legs, higher fatness scores and a slightly higher proportion of Grade A carcasses than the steers.

The information gained by use of measurements and fatness scores explained, but did not materially add to, the assessment of the relative value of the groups of carcasses given by grade.

Grass silage constitutes a major proportion of the food offered to high producing dairy cows in the western regions of the European Union. In order to achieve optimal milk yield and quality from high genetic merit dairy cows, it is common practice to offer concentrates in addition to grass silage at feeding. The aim of the current study was to combine two existing empirical models in order to allow prediction of the response in milk production to offering varying ratios of grass silage and concentrates to high genetic merit dairy cows, allowing for the fact that grass silage quality can vary. Results have demonstrated that it is possible to predict, with reasonable precision, the milk production response to various combinations of grass silage and concentrates in the diet. This will facilitate investigation of production and economic responses of offering increased levels of concentrates in the diet on milk yield, milk quality and milk value.

The paper reports an experiment conducted with 50 Scottish Blackface and 10 South Country Cheviot ewes all suckling twin lambs and grazing, from parturition for some 18 weeks, pasture previously shown to cause a molybdenum-sulphur induced copper deficiency. The objectives were to examine the efficacy of various means of prophylaxis and the susceptibility of the two genotypes to copper deficiency.

The treatment of ewes at parturition with copper, either as an injection of 90 mg copper as copper methionate or orally with cupric oxide needles (3·2 g copper), delayed the onset of signs of copper deficiency in their lambs but did not prevent completely the development of hypocupraemia or hypocuprosis.

The treatment of lambs with a single injection of 15 mg copper as copper calcium edetate at about 6 or 10 weeks of age was not effective in preventing the development of hypocupraemia. Four injections (1 × 5 mg and 3 × 15 mg) at approximately equal intervals maintained normocupraemic values in lambs, but the most effective treatment, as judged by plasma and liver copper concentrations and by live-weight gain, was the administration of cupric oxide needles (1.6 g copper) to lambs at about 6 weeks of age.

The between-genotype comparison indicated that the Cheviot ewes and their lambs were as severely affected by the induced copper deficiency as were the Blackfaces.

A preliminary study was conducted to quantify the lipid produced by differentiated 3T3-L1 cells after incubation in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) containing 10% foetal bovine serum (FBS), supplemented with or without dimethyl-sulphoxide (DMSO; 9•6 g/l) and acetone (1•2 g/l). The two media treatments were applied to 3T3-L1 cells, plated at either 15K or 30K cells per well in 24-well plates. Cells were grown to confluence (96 h) and then treated with dexamethasone, methyl-isobutylxanthine and insulin for 48 h and later maintained in their respective media treatments for another 144 h. Cells from each treatment were recovered after two, 5-min incubations with trypsin, washed and resuspended in DMEM and counted on a haemocytometer. The lipid in the cells was extracted with hexane derivatized with tetramethyl-guanidine and analysed by gas chromatography. Final mean cell density was 6•8 (s.e. 0•18) ✕ 105 and 4•6 (s.e. 0•19) ✕ 105 when initially plated at 30K and 15K cells per well, respectively. Inclusion of DMSO and acetone in the medium did not affect final cell numbers. Plating density did not affect concentration of lipid (0•55 (s.e. 0•08) mg per 1 ✕ 105 cells) but inclusion of DMSO and acetone led to overall decreases in total lipid concentration. Results indicate that initial plating density influenced final cell number in treatment cultures, but that DMSO and acetone treatments only had an effect on final lipid concentration. Collectively, these data suggest that the application of treatments to cell cultures may be influenced by the carrier vehicle that the treatment is contained in and this should be considered when developing an in vitro system to evaluate growth and development of adipocytes.

There is a scarcity of information in the scientific literature on the effects of seasonal and nutritional factors on fibre production in the South American camelids. Without such information it is difficult to develop systems of management incorporating nutritional regimes and fibre harvesting strategies which will optimise the efficiency of fibre production. This paper presents preliminary results from an experiment designed to provide basic information on the effects of season and nutrition on fibre growth in llamas.

The experiment was conducted on 12 adult entire male llamas which were individually penned indoors under conditions of natural photoperiod and ambient temperature in north-east Scotland.

Two levels of nutrition were applied: the lower level (L) was calculated to supply approximately maintenance energy requirements (calculated as 0.44 MJ/kg0.75) and the higher level (H) to supply twice maintenance. The feeding comprised only hay for the L level and hay plus a proprietary cattle concentrate for the H level.
