We present a detailed analysis of random motions moving in higher spaces with a natural number of velocities. In the case of the so-called minimal random dynamics, under some broad assumptions, we give the joint distribution of the position of the motion (for both the inner part and the boundary of the support) and the number of displacements performed with each velocity. Explicit results for cyclic and complete motions are derived. We establish useful relationships between motions moving in different spaces, and we derive the form of the distribution of the movements in arbitrary dimension. Finally, we investigate further properties for stochastic motions governed by non-homogeneous Poisson processes.

This paper studies estimation of stochastic block models with Rissanen’s minimum description length (MDL) principle in the dense graph asymptotics. We focus on the problem of model specification, i.e., identification of the number of blocks. Refinements of the true partition always decrease the code part corresponding to the edge placement, and thus a respective increase of the code part specifying the model should overweight that gain in order to yield a minimum at the true partition. The balance between these effects turns out to be delicate. We show that the MDL principle identifies the true partition among models whose relative block sizes are bounded away from zero. The results are extended to models with Poisson-distributed edge weights.

In this study, we characterize the equilibrium behavior of spatial migration processes that represent population migrations, or birth-death processes, in general spaces. These processes are reversible Markov jump processes on measure spaces. As a precursor, we present fundamental properties of reversible Markov jump processes on general spaces. A major result is a canonical formula for the stationary distribution of a reversible process. This involves the characterization of two-way communication in transitions, using certain Radon-Nikodým derivatives. Other results concern a Kolmogorov criterion for reversibility, time reversibility, and several methods of constructing or identifying reversible processes.

We introduce and study a new model: zero-automatic queues. Roughly, zero-automatic queues are characterized by a special buffering mechanism evolving like a random walk on some infinite group or monoid. The salient result is that all stable zero-automatic queues have a product form stationary distribution and a Poisson output process. When considering the two simplest and extremal cases of zero-automatic queues, we recover the simple M/M/1 queue and Gelenbe's G-queue with positive and negative customers.

Particles may be removed from a lattice by murder, coalescence, mutual annihilation and simple death. If the particle system is not to die out, the removed particles must be replaced by births. This letter shows that coalescence can be counteracted by arbitrarily small birth-rates and contrasts this with the situations for annihilation and pure death where there are critical phenomena. The problem is unresolved for murder.

Kuznetsov and co-authors in 2011‒14 introduced the family of hypergeometric Lévy processes. They appear naturally in the study of fluctuations of stable processes when one analyses stable processes through the theory of positive self-similar Markov processes. Hypergeometric Lévy processes are defined through their characteristic exponent, which, as a complex-valued function, has four independent parameters. In 2014 it was shown that the definition of a hypergeometric Lévy process could be taken to include a greater range of the aforesaid parameters than originally specified. In this short article, we push the parameter range even further.

This paper studies path lengths in random binary search trees under the random permutation model. It is known that the total path length, when properly normalized, converges almost surely to a nondegenerate random variable Z. The limit distribution is commonly referred to as the ‘quicksort distribution’. For the class 𝒜m of finite binary trees with at most m nodes we partition the external nodes of the binary search tree according to the largest tree that each external node belongs to. Thus, the external path length is divided into parts, each part associated with a tree in 𝒜m. We show that the vector of these path lengths, after normalization, converges almost surely to a constant vector times Z.

In this paper we investigate gradient estimation for a class of contracting stochastic systems on a continuous state space. We find conditions on the one-step transitions, namely differentiability and contraction in a Wasserstein distance, that guarantee differentiability of stationary costs. Then we show how to estimate the derivatives, deriving an estimator that can be seen as a generalization of the forward sensitivity analysis method used in deterministic systems. We apply the results to examples, including a neural network model.

The problem addressed is to reverse the degradation which occurs when images are digitised: they are blurred, subjected to noise and rounding error, and sampled only at a lattice of points. Inference is considered for the fundamental case of binary scenes, binary data and isotropic blur. The inferential process is separable into two stages: first from the lattice points to a binary image in continuous space and then the reversal of thresholding and blur. Methods are motivated by, and illustrated using, an electron micrograph of an immunogold-labelled section of tulip virus.

Retransmission-based failure recovery represents a primary approach in existing communication networks that guarantees data delivery in the presence of channel failures. Recent work has shown that, when data sizes have infinite support, retransmissions can cause long (-tailed) delays even if all traffic and network characteristics are light-tailed. In this paper we investigate the practically important case of bounded data units 0 ≤ Lb ≤ b under the condition that the hazard functions of the distributions of data sizes and channel statistics are proportional. To this end, we provide an explicit and uniform characterization of the entire body of the retransmission distribution ℙ[Nb > n] in both n and b. Our main discovery is that this distribution can be represented as the product of a power law and gamma distribution. This rigorous approximation clearly demonstrates the coupling of a power law distribution, dominating the main body, and the gamma distribution, determining the exponential tail. Our results are validated via simulation experiments and can be useful for designing retransmission-based systems with the required performance characteristics. From a broader perspective, this study applies to any other system, e.g. computing, where restart mechanisms are employed after a job processing failure.

We consider the asymptotics for the expected total edge length of the directed and undirected nearest-neighbor graph on We prove convergence to a constant of the rescaled expected total edge length of this random graph. The rescaling factor is a function of the fractal dimension and has a log-periodic, nonconstant behavior.

In the statistical analysis of random sets, it is useful to have simple statistics that can be used to describe the realizations of these sets. The cumulants and several other standardized moments such as the correlation and second cumulant can be used for this purpose, but their estimators can be excessively variable if the most straightforward estimation strategy is used. Through exploitation of similarities between this estimation problem and a similar one for a point process statistic, two modifications are proposed. Analytical results concerning the effects of these modifications are found through use of a specialized asymptotic regime. Simulation results establish that the modifications are highly effective at reducing estimator standard deviations for Boolean models. The results suggest that the reductions in variance result from a balanced use of information in the estimation of the first and second moments, through eliminating the use of observations that are not used in second moment estimation.

We consider an M/G/1 queue with the special feature that the speed of the server alternates between two constant values sL and sH > sL. The high-speed periods are exponentially distributed, and the low-speed periods have a general distribution. Our main results are: (i) for the case that the distribution of the low-speed periods has a rational Laplace–Stieltjes transform, we obtain the joint distribution of the buffer content and the state of the server speed; (ii) for the case that the distribution of the low-speed periods and/or the service request distribution is regularly varying at infinity, we obtain explicit asymptotics for the tail of the buffer content distribution. The two cases in which the offered traffic load is smaller or larger than the low service speed are shown to result in completely different asymptotics.
