We modeled the single-peaked Broad Emission Lines (BELs) with two-component model (accretion disk, with surrounding spherical region), comparing it with observational line profiles for a number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We find that the accretion in the Broad Line Region (BLR) can be present even if the profiles of BELs are single-peaked.

The main-belt asteroids are generally considered as the principal source for the near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). The ESA astrometric mission Gaia, due for launch in late 2011, will observe a very large number of asteroids (∼300,000 brighter than V = 20), the majority lying in the main-belt and with an unprecedented positional precision (at the sub-milliarcsecond level). Such high precision astrometry will enable to derive direct measures of the masses of the largest asteroids of which their precise determination will be of utmost significance for the knowledge of physical properties of asteroids. The method for computing the masses is based on the analysis of orbital perturbations during close encounters between massive asteroids (perturbers) and several smaller minor planets (targets). From given criteria of close approaches selection, we give the list of asteroids for which the mass can be determined, and the expected precision of these masses at mission completion.

When the winds of two massive stars orbiting each other collide, an interaction zone is created consisting of two shock fronts at both sides of a contact surface. During the cooling process, elements may recombine generating spectral lines. These lines may be Doppler shifted, as the gas stream flows over the interaction zone. To calculate the stream velocity projected into the line of sight we use a simplified conical geometry for the shock fronts and, to determine the synthetic line profile, we have to sum the amount of emitting gas elements with the same Doppler shifted velocity. We show that the stellar mass loss rates and wind velocities, and the orbital inclination and eccentricity, are the main parameters on this physical process. By comparing observational data to the synthetic line profiles it is possible to determine these parameters. We tested this process to Brey 22 WR binary system, and applied to the enigmatic object of η Carinae.

Three-dimensional global modelling of turbulent convection coupled to rotation and magnetism within the Sun are revealing processes relevant to many stars. We study spherical shells of compressible convection spanning many density scale heights using the MHD version of the anelastic spherical harmonic (ASH) code on massively parallel supercomputers. The simulations reveal that strong magnetic fields can be realized in the bulk of the solar convection zone while still attaining differential rotation profiles that make good contact with helioseismic findings. We find that the Maxwell and Reynolds stresses present in such a turbulent layer play an important role in redistributing angular momentum, with the latter maintaining the differential rotation, aided by baroclinic forcing at the base of the convection zone which is consistent with a tachocline there. The dynamo processes generate strong non-axisymmetric and intermittent fields and weak mean (axisymmetric) fields, but do not possess a regular cyclic magnetism. The explicit inclusion of penetrative convection into the tachocline below is modifying such behavior, serving to build strong toroidal magnetic fields there that may yield more prominent mean fields that have the potential of erupting upward.

The narrow line QSO PG1211+143 has been a focus of recent attempts to understand the soft excess in AGN, while the 2001 XMM-Newton observation of this luminous AGN also provided evidence for a massive and energetic outflow. Here we consider a physical link between the energetic outflow and the variable soft excess.

I assess the similarities and differences between the star-formation modes in quiescent spiral galaxies versus those in violent starburst regions, including galactic nuclei. As opposed to the quiescent star-formation mode, current empirical evidence on the star-formation processes in the extreme, high-pressure environments induced by galaxy encounters strongly suggests that star cluster formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in such starburst events. This implies that by using star clusters as unique diagnostic probes, we can trace a galaxy's most violent star formation history very well, at least for the past few Gyr. The sizes, luminosities, and mass estimates of the young massive star clusters are entirely consistent with what is expected for young Milky Way-type globular clusters (GCs). Recent evidence lends support to the scenario that GCs, which were once thought to be the oldest building blocks of galaxies, are still forming today.

Meteoroids observed to disintegrate in the terrestrial atmosphere can be directly linked to their parent bodies in case that they belong to certain meteor showers. We present a list of two dozens of parent bodies reliably associated with well recognized meteor showers. Among the parent bodies are long period comets, Halley-type comets, Jupiter family comets, comets of the inner solar system (such as 2P/Encke) and asteroids. Physical and chemical properties of meteoroids coming from various parents are compared on the basis of meteor heights, decelerations, light curves and spectra. Jupiter family comets produce meteoroids with the lowest strength, namely porous aggregates of dust grains with bulk densities of about 0.3 g cm−3 or less. Halley type material is somewhat stronger and the material related to comet Encke is even stronger. In addition, small strong constituents, perhaps similar to carbonaceous chondrites, can be encountered within the normal cometary material. The strength of cometary material is also enhanced by long-term exposure to cosmic rays and by solar heating in the vicinity to the Sun (r<0.2 AU). Both these processes lead to the loss of volatile sodium. Southern δ-Aquariids, Geminids and partly also Quadrantids were influenced by solar radiation. We argue that these showers, the asteroids associated with them ((3200) Phaethon and 2003 EH1), and the whole interplanetary complexes they belong to are of cometary origin. The argument is supported by lower than chondritic Fe/Mg ratio found in Geminids as well as in Halley type comets. The typical property of stony meteoroids of asteroidal origin is the presence of internal cracks which cause that the incoming meteoroids are much weaker than the recovered meteorites.

We investigate the galaxy populations in 6 clusters of different x-ray luminosities at intermediate redshifts (z ≈ 0.25) concentrating on their star formation activity. Our ~500 Calar Alto MOSCA spectra come from targets covering large fields out to 2–4 cluster virial radii. To probe this so-called infall region is important since here newly arriving galaxies from the surrounding field encounter the special environment of clusters for the first time. We selected 3 fields containing 2 clusters each from the X-ray Dark Cluster Survey (Gilbank et al. 2004). Results for one field were already published by Gerken et al. 2004.

We find evidence that the process(es) that suppresses or truncates the star formation activity in cluster galaxies, sets in already at rather large distances from the cluster cores corresponding to low projected local galaxy densities. This changes the fraction of star forming galaxies rather quickly.

We argue that with the refined definition of TDB to be adopted by the IAU, the transformation between TDB and TCB becomes trivial.

One of the most important changes in observational astronomy of the 21st Century is a rapid shift from classical object-by-object observations to extensive automatic surveys. As CCD detectors are getting better and their prices are getting lower, more and more small and medium-size observatories are refocusing their attention to detection of stellar variability through systematic sky-scanning missions. This trend is aditionally powered by the success of pioneering surveys such as ASAS, DENIS, OGLE, TASS, their space counterpart Hipparcos and others. Such surveys produce massive amounts of data and it is not at all clear how these data are to be reduced and analysed. This is especially striking in the eclipsing binary (EB) field, where most frequently used tools are optimized for object-by-object analysis. A clear need for thorough, reliable and fully automated approaches to modeling and analysis of EB data is thus obvious. This task is very difficult because of limited data quality, non-uniform phase coverage and solution degeneracy. This paper reviews recent advancements in putting together semi-automatic and fully automatic pipelines for EB data processing. Automatic procedures have already been used to process Hipparcos data, LMC/SMC observations, OGLE and ASAS catalogs etc. We discuss the advantages and shortcomings of these procedures.

It is a general belief that the starburst activity of a nearby galaxy M82 was triggered in a close encounter with its massive companion M81, a few tens of million years ago. Despite the lack of supernovae observed, multiwavelength radio observations of M82 discovered a considerable number of compact supernova remnant candidates. We use these remnants to estimate the supernova rate (SNR) and the enhanced star-formation (SFR) rate in M82, and compare them with rates in normal galaxies.

Accurate measurements of emission line properties are crucial to understand the physics of the broad line region in quasars. This region consists of warm gas that is closest to the quasar central engine and has not been spatially resolved for almost all sources. We present here an analysis of optical and IR data for a large sample of quasars, covering the Hi Hβ spectral region in the redshift range 0 ≲ z ≲ 2.5. Spectra were interpreted within the framework of the the so-called “eigenvector 1” parameter space, which can be viewed as a tentative H-R diagram for quasars. We stress the lack of spectral evolution in the low ionization lines of quasars, with prominent Fe ii emission also at z ≳ 2. We also show how selection effects influence the ability to find quasars radiating at low Eddington ratio in flux-limited surveys. The quasar similarity at different redshift is probably due to the absence of super-Eddington radiators (at least within the caveats of black hole mass and Eddington ratio determination discussed in this paper) as well as to the limited Eddington ratio range within which quasars seem to radiate.

We discuss observational evidence for sequential and triggered star formation in OB associations. We first review the star formation process in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, the nearest OB association to the Sun, where several recent extensive studies have allowed us to reconstruct the star formation history in a rather detailed way. We then compare the observational results with those obtained for other OB associations and with recent models of rapid cloud and star formation in the turbulent interstellar medium. We conclude that the formation of whole OB subgroups (each consisting of several thousand stars) requires large-scale triggering mechanisms such as shocks from expanding wind and supernova driven superbubbles surrounding older subgroups. Other triggering mechanisms, like radiatively driven implosion of globules, also operate, but seem to be secondary processes, forming only small stellar groups rather than whole OB subgroups with thousands of stars.

We perform the two-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to study the radiation pressure-dominated accretion flows around a black hole (BH). Our simulations show that the highly supercritical accretion flow (mass accretion rate is much larger than the critical value) is composed of the disk region and the outflow region above the disk.

The radiation force supports the thick disk and drives the outflow. The photon trapping plays an important role within the disk, reducing the disk luminosity. On the other hand, in the case that mass accretion rate moderately exceeds the critical value, we find that the disk is unstable and exhibits the limit-cycle oscillations. The disk oscillations in our simulations nicely fit to the variation amplitude and duration of quasi-periodic luminosity variations observed in the GRS 1915+105 microquasar.

Two Moroccan sites have been selected to be characterized for the ELT telescopes. Those sites are in the Atlas, between Oukaïmeden (where the national observatory is situated) and the Canary Islands. For this preliminary study, we have used the Nimbus-7 TOMS aerosol index to derive the astronomical extinction. This work builds on the findings of an earlier study which established the link between these two parameters over the Canary Islands.

The NSF Science and Technology Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) is supporting a major scientific legacy project called the CfAO Treasury Survey (CATS). CATS is obtaining near-infrared AO data in deep HST survey fields, such as GEMS, GOODS-N, & EGS. Besides summarizing the main objectives of CATS, we highlight some recent imaging work on the study of distant field galaxies, AGNs, and a redshift z = 1.32 supernova. CATS plans the first data release to the community in early 2007 (check http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~irlab/cats/index.shtml for more details on CATS and latest updates).

Young massive star-forming regions are known to produce hot molecular gas cores (HMCs) with a rich chemistry. While this chemistry is interesting in itself, it also allows to investigate important physical parameters. I will present recent results obtained with high-angular-resolution interferometers disentangling the small-scale structure and complexity of various molecular gas components. Early attempts to develop a chemical evolutionary sequence are discussed. Furthermore, I will outline the difficulty to isolate the right molecular lines capable to unambiguously trace potential massive accretion disks.

Results of the Deep Impact mission to impact Comet Tempel 1 are summarized.

We study solar irradiance variability. The current generation of models show that the irradiance since then has increased by between 0.9 and 1.5 W m−2.

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) Capacity-Building Programme introduces astronomers in the developing world to the rich resource of space research online archives. The programme consists of a series of regional workshops which each bring together about 30 developing world astronomers with around 8 teaching faculty for lectures and hands-on projects. Five workshops have been held so far with another two planned for next year and a budget which enables on average one workshop each year. Proposals for future workshops are encouraged.
