From the middle of the eighteenth century, with the growth of travel at home and abroad and the increase in leisure for the wealthier classes, the arts became the subject of more widespread appreciation and discussion. The rapid expansion of book and periodical publishing in this area both reflected and encouraged interest in art and art history among the wider reading public. This series throws light on the development of visual culture and aesthetics. It covers topics from the Grand Tour to the great exhibitions of the nineteenth century, and includes art criticism and biography.

  • This two-volume posthumous edition of the writings on art of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–92), one of the greatest of eighteenth-century artists and the first president of the Royal Academy, was published in 1797. Volume 2 contains his previously unpublished Journey to Flanders and Holland, which describes and comments on the paintings Reynolds examined on a two-month tour in Europe in 1781. (He visited galleries in Düsseldorf, Cologne and Aachen as well as the Low Counties.) This is followed by a long Latin poem on the art of painting, by the French artist Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy (1611–68), together with a translation by William Mason, and extensive commentary by Reynolds. Appendices include essays by Pope and Dryden on du Fresnoy's poem, and chronological and alphabetical lists of painters and their genres from Cimabue to the late seventeenth century. The book is completed by an index covering both volumes.

  • The Oxford bookseller and publisher John Henry Parker (1806–84), a supporter of the Tractarian movement and a friend of Cardinal Newman, was also a historian of architecture, whose two-volume Glossary of Terms Used in Grecian, Roman, Italian, and Gothic Architecture is also reissued in this series. In 1851, he published a volume on English domestic architecture from the Norman Conquest to 1300 by the antiquary Thomas Hudson Turner (1815–52), and on Turner's death he completed the second volume, on the fourteenth century, himself. Both volumes are highly illustrated with line drawings and plans. Volume 1, after an introductory chapter about pre-Conquest buildings, discusses architectural plans, features, building materials and techniques of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and gives examples of surviving buildings, from grand to modest, all over England, as well as reproducing documents throwing light on the painting and decoration of medieval buildings.

  • Ranging in coverage from humble cottages to grand villas, this encyclopaedia was compiled by the Scottish landscape gardener John Claudius Loudon (1783–1843). Its ambition, as stated in the introduction, was 'to improve the dwellings of the great mass of society'. Hundreds of types of rural abode are delineated here by Loudon and his contributors, and the text is greatly enhanced by more than 2,000 illustrations. Later sections examine the subject of fixtures and furnishings - from cornices to carpets - and explain which types were considered appropriate for a particular style of house. Space is also devoted to the principles of architectural criticism. For historians and lovers of architecture and interior design, this substantial resource, published in 1833, sheds light on the fashions and theories of the early nineteenth century. Loudon's First Additional Supplement to the Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm, and Villa Architecture and Furniture (1842) is also reissued in this series.

  • Later known as Lady Eastlake, the writer Elizabeth Rigby (1809–93) travelled widely in her early years, and subsequently moved in the highest literary and artistic circles. After an illness in 1827 she was taken abroad to recover, and her encounters with European art led to her writing career. In 1849, she married the painter Charles Eastlake, who became the director of the National Gallery and president of the Royal Academy. Continuing to write, especially for the Quarterly Magazine, on literature and art, she spent part of each year touring galleries and private collections across Europe. This engaging two-volume work of 1895, edited by her nephew and full of shrewd judgements on art and on people, is compiled from her journals and letters. Volume 2, covering the period from 1854 to her death, concludes with a reminiscence by one of her closest friends, the illustrator and author Eleanor Vere Boyle.

  • In 1816, architect and botanist Joseph Woods (1776–1864) embarked on a two-year journey through France, Switzerland, Italy and Greece, documenting interesting flora as well as buildings of note. This two-volume work first appeared in 1828. The account stands apart from other contemporary travelogues owing to the application of Woods' architectural insight. By critically assessing ancient and modern buildings for strengths and defects, Woods hoped to inform fellow architects as to how they might produce beautiful buildings through the study of different modes of construction and decoration. Accordingly, the text is accompanied by Woods' drawings of important buildings and architectural features. In Volume 2, he records his travels through Italy, Greece and Malta, and examines such notable locations as the Athenian Acropolis and the ruins of Pompeii.

  • The Oxford bookseller and publisher John Henry Parker (1806–84), a supporter of the Tractarian movement and a friend of Cardinal Newman, was also a historian of architecture, and first published this glossary in 1836. Reissued here is the enlarged third edition of 1840. The work is ordered alphabetically, and illustrated with 700 woodcuts by various artists. As stated in the first edition's preface, the book 'lays no claim to originality, its sole object being utility'. By 1837, 'the rapid sale of the first edition of this work clearly shews that something of the kind was required'. The third edition was followed in 1841 by a companion volume which contained 400 further examples and a chronological table: the two books offered a useful guide for those travellers and others who were taking a keen interest in the built environment. The first volume contains explanations of terms from 'abacus' to 'zotheca' and 105 plates with notes.

  • An architect like his father before him, Joseph Gwilt (1784–1863) is best remembered for his published work. His most celebrated achievement, reissued here in its first edition of 1842, was this hugely popular resource, which went through several further editions. The work draws extensively on French sources, although its success owes much to its accessibility and organisation into three thorough sections. The first looks at the development of architecture, using examples from various countries and regions, with a particular focus on Britain. Architectural theory is then explored with reference to construction, building materials and detailed illustrations. Lastly, Gwilt turns to praxis, looking at rules and styles of architecture and how these have been implemented in public and private buildings. Over 1,000 wood engravings, based on drawings by the author's son, accompany the text. The Architecture of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (1826), Gwilt's English translation, is also reissued in this series.

  • This two-volume posthumous edition of the writings on art of Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723–92), one of the greatest of eighteenth-century artists and the first president of the Royal Academy, was published in 1797. It is prefaced by a short biography of Reynolds by his friend, the Shakespearean critic Edmond Malone (1741–1812), which includes a list of Reynolds' paintings with their sale prices, when known. Reynolds took his role as president and fellow of the Royal Academy very seriously, delivering fifteen 'discourses' to the fellows and students of the Academy, which are collected in Volume 1, along with three 'letters' on art criticism published in The Idler. This periodical's editor, Dr Johnson, was one of Reynolds' most intimate friends, and Reynolds was one of only three writers, in addition to himself, whom Johnson published in it. These essays provide a fascinating insight into the intellectual basis of Reynolds' work.

  • One of the leading exponents of the nineteenth century's Gothic Revival, the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811–78) most famously designed the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens and the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. In the design and restoration of churches and cathedrals, his work was distinguished by its care, skill and sheer volume: most medieval cathedrals in England and Wales, including Westminster Abbey, benefited from Scott's expertise in some form. Written between 1864 and his death, then edited by his son and fellow architect George Gilbert Scott (1839–97), this 1879 autobiography was among the first of its kind, recording the background, career and opinions of a prolific professional architect. Moreover, the work includes a defence of Scott's principles against what he saw as the 'anti-restoration movement', led by John Ruskin and others. Altogether, these lucid memoirs confirm Scott's place at the centre of Victorian design.

  • The architect Arthur Ashpitel (1807–69) worked on a wide variety of projects, including churches, houses and schools, and wrote widely on architecture, literature and politics. He became a fellow of the Institute of British Architects in 1841 and the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1847. This 1867 work comprises his compilation and revision of notable tracts on architecture from the Encyclopædia Britannica. It includes entries by William Hosking (1800–61) on classical, Gothic and modern architecture, building and construction; Thomas Tredgold (1788–1829) on joinery and stonemasonry; Thomas Young (1773–1829) on carpentry; and John Robison (1739–1805) on roofs, arches and the strength of materials. Intended to be of practical use to architects, craftsmen and 'the building trade', Ashpitel's synthesis remains a valuable resource for scholars interested in nineteenth-century thought on architectural history, practice and technology.

  • Artist, diarist, and devotee of the Elgin Marbles, Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786–1846) is best known for his large-scale paintings, such as Christ's Entry into Jerusalem and The Raising of Lazarus. After he entered the Royal Academy in 1805 as a student of Henry Fuseli, his forthright views and combative manner fuelled a feud with the institution and perceived enemies. His unshakeable belief in his own genius and his unwillingness to compromise his artistic standards drew him ever further into debt, which ultimately contributed to his suicide. As a writer, Haydon's acute eye for the humorous is demonstrated throughout his correspondence and diary. In this two-volume work, first published in 1876, his son Frederick Wordsworth Haydon (1827–86) brings together letters and extracts from his father's journals. Volume 2 contains selected letters, including those to and from Keats and Wordsworth, along with a host of witty and erudite journal extracts.

  • Clergyman, schoolmaster and writer on aesthetics, William Gilpin (1724–1804) is best known for his works on the picturesque. In his Essay on Prints, published in 1768 and reissued in this series, he defined picturesque as 'a term expressive of that peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture'. First published in 1804, the present work is one of a series which records his reflections on the picturesque across British landscapes. It traces the journey he made in 1774, equipped with notebook and sketching materials, along England's south coast from Portsmouth to Dover and Canterbury via Brighton, Rye and Romney Marsh. He describes his impressions of famous landmarks such as the South Downs, Petworth House, Dover Castle and Canterbury Cathedral, and includes several reproductions of his pen-and-wash drawings. The companion volumes of Observations on other parts of Britain are also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.

  • With a fondness for classical antiquities and neoclassical design, the connoisseur Thomas Hope (1769–1831) sought to influence Georgian taste by promoting informed interior decoration, displaying his own considerable art collection, and writing with insight on aesthetic topics. This two-volume work, originally published posthumously in 1835, traces the evolution of Western architecture since antiquity. Hope was a keen traveller, and the examples he cites are drawn from buildings that he studied on journeys through Europe and beyond, notably in those countries bordering the Mediterranean. Reissued here in the third edition that appeared in 1840, Volume 1 examines how religions, climates, landscapes and prevailing mores shaped the architectural preferences of civilisations from ancient Egypt to the Gothic revival, as well as how different cultures adapted foreign or ancient architectural innovations for their own ends.

Popular when first published, it illuminates the search for authenticity of treatment and depth of meaning in his own work and that of Millais, Rossetti and their circle. After his success with The Light of the World, he survived exotic and dangerous travels to create some of the most memorable paintings of the age, such as The Scapegoat (mostly painted by the Dead Sea with a gun at hand) and The Lady of Shalott. Volume 1 shows him overcoming family objections and early criticism to pursue his artistic goals, finding common ground in the Brotherhood, winning Ruskin's backing and wider recognition, and making his first trip to the Holy Land.

  • Born in Scotland, James Fergusson (1808–86) spent ten years as an indigo planter in India before embarking upon a second career as an architectural historian. Although he had no formal training, he became one of the most respected researchers in the field and an expert on India's cave temples. His History of Indian and Eastern Architecture was first published in 1876 and became a standard work. It was revised in this two-volume edition of 1910 by James Burgess (1832–1916), former Director of the Archaeological Survey of India, and Richard Spiers (1838–1916), a noted architect and historian of architecture. Volume 1 covers Buddhist and Himalayan architecture, the Dravidian style of southern India, and the later Chalukyan style from southern and central India in the early medieval period. Illustrated with 280 maps, plans and drawings, this work of impressive scope remains relevant to students of Indian architecture and history.

  • This work was first published in 1886 to accompany one of the more eccentric displays at the Edinburgh International Exhibition of the same year. Historically accurate reconstructions of noteworthy but long-demolished Edinburgh buildings were built side by side to create a fictional street. This guide provided visitors with key historical information relating to the recreated buildings and monuments ranging from the medieval market cross to the historic tolbooth. Fact is combined with anecdote, situating the buildings in the wider context of Edinburgh's rich history. The text was written by John Charles Dunlop and Alison Hay Dunlop, antiquarian siblings little known beyond their Edinburgh circles. Of particular interest are the illustrations by William Fergusson Brassey Hole (1846–1917), who later painted the murals in the entrance hall of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

  • The architect Charles Robert Cockerell (1788–1863) was encouraged to travel at a young age, so that he might draw inspiration from the great works of European architecture. However, when the Napoleonic Wars made parts of the continent inaccessible to Englishmen, his eye was turned towards southern Europe and the Ottoman Empire. This version of the Grand Tour took up seven years, during which he recorded the events in his journals. There his observations would have remained had it not been for the editorial labours of his son, Samuel Pepys Cockerell (1844–1921), who published the present work in 1903. The narrative takes in such cities as Constantinople, Athens, Florence and Rome. Touching also on friendships made with such figures as Byron, the text gives a sense of what continental travel was like at that time and how the architecture of the past continued to captivate designers in the modern age.
