In this chapter, we investigate how a couple where one of the spouses is diagnosed with dementia handle challenges in narrations of past shared events that arise when the spouse with dementia has limited access to these events. Partners of people diagnosed with dementia recurrently have to take into consideration that their spouse may not remember details in stories they tell, even though the person with dementia is a main participant in the events being retold. The design of such stories is complex as the interactants must keep track of both the content of the story and manage the potential sensitivity of telling a story that should already be known to both spouses. We show how the spouse without dementia (re)organizes the participation framework in resourceful ways and delicately deals with her spouse’s limited memory using a variety of face-saving practices. The analyses highlight how issues related to knowledge and dementia can benefit from using an interactional and distributed perspective. While access and rights to knowledge is usually divided between participants depending on the knowledge domain and the participants’ relation to the topic, in the case of a dementia disease a more flexible approach towards such divisions could be advantageous.

This chapter begins by distinguishing among prevention, intervention, and promotion efforts, giving particular attention to how these processes operate in the context of schools. One example of a school-based, evidence-based practice – City Connects – is used to illustrate how prevention, promotion, and intervention can be operationalized in the contexts of schools and their local communities. As a clinical/public health model, City Connects is responsive to every child in the school, without an exclusive focus on either the subset of students who are in severe crisis or those who are highest performing. The authors argue that prevention-in-action requires working across polarities, such as intervening at both the individual and group levels, targeting challenges while fostering strengths and interests, and promoting healthy development while simultaneously intervening in existing difficulties. The chapter concludes with a summary of challenges and possibilities in implementing high-quality prevention and promotion approaches, such as developing a theory of change based on developmental science that includes measurable outcomes.

Conditional frontier models, including full and partial, robust frontiers, have evolved into an indispensable tool for exploring the impact of exogenous factors on the performance of the decision-making units in a fully nonparametric setup. Nonparametric conditional frontier models enable the handling of heterogeneity in a formal way, allowing explanation of the differences in the efficiency levels achieved by units operating under different external or environmental conditions. A thorough analysis of both full and robust time dependent conditional efficiency measures and of their corresponding estimators allows unravelling the compounded impact that exogenous factors may have on the production process. The nonparametric framework does not make assumptions on error distributions and production function forms and avoids misspecification problems when the data-generation process is unknown, as is common in applied studies. This chapter proposes a comprehensive review and journey through the conditional nonparametric frontier models developed so far in the efficiency literature. The authors show how this nonparametric dynamic framework is important for evaluating efficiency in the healthcare sector. They provide numerical illustrations on datasets from the Italian healthcare system, including summaries of practical implementation details.

This chapter details not only the prehistory of EPR but also examines the structure and logic of the EPR paper – including Einstein’s own preferred version of the argument for incompleteness. We here attempt a seamless interweaving of the excellent extant literature with additional details that have emerged from our work and the recent work of others. Some examples of new aspects in this prehistory of EPR include evidence of a ‘proto’ photon-box thought experiment Einstein had developed in connection with his ill-starred collaboration with Emil Rupp in 1926. We also describe the potential importance to this prehistory of Einstein’s paper with Tolman and Podolsky and of Einstein’s seminar and discussions with Schrödinger in Berlin in the early 1930s.

In 1956 (and even now), two distinct types of agriculture existed in the state: cultivation of seasonal field crops and cultivation of tree crops. The latter held steady in the long run. But traditional agriculture, especially paddy cultivation, for which the lowlands and the river basins were especially suitable, has seen a relentless decline since 1970. Twenty years into the new millennium, traditional agriculture was an insignificant employer and earner, and for most people still engaged in it, the land provided no more than a subsidiary income. A relative retreat from traditional agriculture is not news. It happened everywhere. In the state the fall was spectacular.

What was this a change from? Although agriculture employed a smaller proportion of the workforce than in India at the start of this journey, it was not a marginal livelihood. Land control secured the political power of the elites in the princely states. A variety of crops were cultivated throughout the state, from monsoon rice to tapioca, ginger, groundnut, sugarcane and pulses. Most were rarely traded outside the region but were vital to sustaining local consumption. Good croplands occurred in clusters. Because of the topography, land available for the cultivation of traditional field crops was less than half the total land area of the state. Alluvial soil occurs in a narrow strip along the coast or in river valleys. Land elsewhere is not as fertile, though frequently suitable for tree crops. Unlike in most regions of India, access to water was not a serious problem. Soil quality and drainage of excess water were bigger problems.

Good land, however, was extremely scarce relative to the population. The exceptionally high population density in the areas of cultivation ensured a level of available land per head that was a fraction of the Indian figure (0.6 acres against an Indian average of 3.1 acres around 1970) and low by any benchmark. Partly, the density reflected high labour demand in lowlands to deal with drainage and seasonal flooding. Paddy yield was very high in these areas, but paddy cultivation needed a lot of people. From the 1940s, this zone in the middle was emerging as a political battleground.

The 1866 banking crisis effectively ended London’s iron shipbuilding industry. Few companies survived, so destitution faced many shipyard workers. Processing industries also changed. Beet sugar replaced cane, soft sugar hard ‘baked’ sugar and production became concentrated in two firms. In contrast, boosted by foreign grain imports, London’s milling industry expanded. South bank maritime communities maintained established industrial patterns. Shipbuilding proved resilient and traditional employment systems persisted in the Rotherhithe docks, but settlements of waterfront wharf labourers, many of Irish origin, were desperately poor. Poverty was also a hallmark of the north bank. Less socially mixed than in the past, mythic undifferentiated images of ‘Outcast London’ obscured the East End’s continuing maritime connections, including the presence of skilled workers and their organisations. Sailors ashore, the subject of State intervention, were an exception.

Evolutionary ideas were in circulation before Charles Darwin began his work and were widely disseminated, arousing much controversy. In addition to the writings of Erasmus Darwin (Charles’ grandfather), French ideas gained some currency in the English-speaking world, especially the views of J. B. Lamarck. These ideas were taken up by radical thinkers who rejected divine creation, to the horror of conservatives. Early discoveries of fossils played a significant role in arousing public interest in the history of life and were often seen as evidence that life had ascended a scale of development (the chain of being) toward humanity. The first-known dinosaurs were fitted into the chain as gigantic lizards, not as evidence of creatures totally unlike anything now alive. This model was adapted to middle-class values in Robert Chambers’ Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation in 1844, again arousing controversy but gradually gaining some credibility beyond the scientific community.

This chapter provides a brief overview of the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) in the context of analyzing healthcare, with a focus on hospitals, where it has received widespread attention. The authors consider many of the popular extensions and generalizations of the classic SFA model in both cross-sectional and panel data. They also briefly discuss semiparametric and nonparametric generalizations, spatial frontiers, Bayesian SFA, and the endogeneity in SFA. They illustrate some of these methods for real data on public hospitals in Queensland, Australia, as well as provide practical guidance and references for their computational implementations via R.

This chapter uses conversation analysis to investigate how different quiz formats facilitate or impede participation in group quizzes for people living with dementia. Quizzes are an important way to prompt social interaction and engage people living with dementia. However, their reliance on memory and cognition can present difficulties for staff and players alike. Despite quizzes being based on a question–answer format, the way they are enacted can vary in the following ways: question formulation and type; the type of appropriate answer (i.e., is there one, or more than one, possible correct answer?); the social structure of the quiz (Is the quiz played in teams or individually? Do players self-select to answer or do so in a mediated turn allocation format?); the way the players are spatially organised. All these variations impact the degree to which players can engage with the activity and with one another. Through the examination of different types of quiz format, this chapter outlines and make recommendations for quiz structures which facilitate high participation and uptake, and low threats to face. Data are taken from a corpus of ten quizzes recorded in four different group settings in England.

This chapter addresses the suggestion that for a special regime to exist, community members must be engaged in a joint enterprise. In the context of international law, to claim that a group of international law specialists is engaged in a joint enterprise is to assert that they do what they do based on the idea that some certain state of affairs is desirable. As Chapter 4 argues, in the context of international law, the existence of such a presupposition can be inferred from the actual pursuit of those specialists of a distinct state of affairs, and the way in which they perform assignments.
