The quality of psychological assessment processes in talent management is influenced by our choices about which measurement technologies to use. Technology with relevance to assessing talent is also advancing at great speed in many domains. These advances include processing power and speed, human computer interaction research, and machine learning and artificial intelligence. Given these rapid developments, it is an appropriate time to pause and take stock of how emerging assessment approaches (e.g., game-based assessment) that leverage these new developments are used, relative to more traditional approaches such as questionnaires and interviews. To achieve this objective, we report here on a survey of European assessment practitioners. We ask about the technology they use for psychological assessment, the constructs they measure with those approaches, and the levels of organisations they are used at. We also asked about how traditional approaches are being enhanced with technology and about practitioner perceptions of the reliability, validity and adverse impact and privacy of their technological choices.

In order for an employee to help the organization achieve strategic success through his or her performance, he/she must work at optimal levels towards very clear and specific objectives. In other words, the organization must design and implement a performance management system (PMS) that empowers employees and allows them to work at optimal levels. However, a review of the related research shows but when it comes to expatriates, most organisations do not develop dedicated PMSs – instead, it seems that most organizations evaluate and manage expatriates on an ad-hoc basis, often leading to dissatisfaction with the outcomes and conduct of the PMS, and subsequent dip in performance levels and quality. In this chapter, we briefly trace the history of PMSs, with particular emphasis to PMSs related to expatriates, and discuss some recent PMS models. We further discuss additional contextual variables that should be incorporated into effective PMSs, and conclude by offering guidelines for designing an effective PMS for expatriates.

This chapter focuses on six key areas that are affecting recruitment and retention: (1) technology, (2) social media, (3) big data, (4) HR technology and information systems, (5) globalization, and (6) demographics. It begins with a brief review of changes in each of these areas and how they are affecting work. Then we consider how these same changes are affecting recruitment, recognizing that in the age of the Internet and social media, recruitment is, by definition, global. In a concluding section, we offer research-based suggestions regarding what managers can do to maximize the retention of talented employees that they want to keep.

To facilitate its rapid growth over the past thirty years and build an increasingly capable management team and workforce, Huawei made substantial changes to its HR practices. As the number of employees increased, the firm faced different challenges in recruiting, developing, and motivating employees while broadening its geographic focus from China to all corners of the globe. To accurately describe the changes Huawei made to address these challenges, we divide the history of Huawei’s HR system into five distinct stages that we call (1) personnel management, (2) the beginning of human resource management, (3) strategic human resource management, (4) international human resource management, and (5)talent management. With the help of Western consulting firms, Huawei imported many Western HR practices and combined them with the Chinese tradition of cultivating a strong commitment to a large organization. Huawei also adapted Western ideas. For example, it required employees to pay for their own training costs at the company university.

This chapter introduces some terminology and themes that pervade the book. Compensation is defined broadly to include everything a worker likes about the job. “Strategic compensation” is about managing the compensation system to advance a specific organizational objective, typically profit maximization. The chapter discusses how this relates to talent management, turnover, retention, and employee productivity. Four recurring themes are introduced: (1) “Incentive effects” and “sorting effects (both of which affect the company’s labor productivity) arise when the compensation system is changed; (2) Market competition largely dictates pay levels, whereas employers have more control over pay design; (3) Competition forces employers to care about their employees’ preferences about pay; (4) Bargaining power also affects pay levels. The metaphor of a “3-legged stool” is introduced, in which compensation depends on workers’ desires, skills, and mobility. There’s discussion of what constitutes “fair” pay and the tradeoffs associated with allowing employees to know each other’s pay versus keeping compensation secret. The appendix offers a detailed treatment of nominal versus real compensation.
