Between a plasma and a solid target lies a positively charged sheath of several Debye lengths $\lambda _{D}$ width, typically much smaller than the characteristic length scale $L$ of the main plasma. This scale separation implies that the asymptotic limit $\epsilon = \lambda _{D} / L \rightarrow 0$ is useful to solve for the plasma-sheath system. In this limit, the Bohm criterion must be satisfied at the sheath entrance. A new derivation of the kinetic criterion, admitting a general ion velocity distribution, is presented. It is proven that, for $\epsilon \rightarrow 0$, the distribution of the velocity component normal to the target, $v_x$, and its first derivative must vanish for $|v_x| \rightarrow 0$ at the sheath entrance. These two conditions can be subsumed into a third integral one after it is integrated by parts twice. A subsequent interchange of the limits $\epsilon \rightarrow 0$ and $|v_x| \rightarrow 0$ is invalid, leading to a divergence which underlies the misconception that the criterion gives undue importance to slow ions.

This study investigates the dynamics of various particles within the plasma sheath, focusing on the influence of secondary emissions from charged dust particles. The research concentrates on backscattered electron emission (BEE), inelastic reflection emission (IRE) and true-secondary electron emission (TEE) as key contributors to the behaviour of dust particles within the plasma sheath. Employing the semi-empirical model of Furman and Pivi (F-P model), the study defines the total emission of secondary electrons (EES), comprising these three types. The analysis aims to enhance our understanding of the complex interplay between secondary emission phenomena and the dynamics of charged particles within the plasma sheath, contributing valuable insights to the field. Furthermore, a comparative study has been conducted between the results obtained from the emission of secondary electrons according to the Sternglass theory and the emission of secondary electrons obtained using the F-P model. It is observed that the secondary electron emission (SEE) from the dust, based on the F-P model, demonstrates more pronounced effects on the sheath characteristics, particularly when considering lower values of the superextensive electron parameter ‘$q$’.

This paper establishes a mean-field equation set and an energy theorem to provide a theoretical basis in view of the development of self-consistent, physics-based turbulent transport models for mean-field transport codes. A rigorous averaging procedure identifies the exact form of the perpendicular turbulent fluxes which are modelled by ad hoc diffusive terms in mean-field transport codes, next to other closure terms which are not commonly considered. Earlier work suggested that the turbulent $E\times B$ particle and heat fluxes, which are thus identified to be important closure terms, can be modelled to reasonable accuracy using the kinetic energy in the $E\times B$ velocity fluctuations ($k_{E}$). The related enstrophy led to further modelling improvements in an initial study, although further analysis is required. To support this modelling approach, transport equations are derived analytically for both quantities. In particular, an energy theorem is established in which the various source and sink terms of $k_{E}$ are shown to couple to mean-field and turbulent parallel kinetic energy, kinetic energy in the other perpendicular velocity components, the thermal energy and the magnetic energy. This provides expressions for the interchange, drift-wave and Reynolds stress terms amongst others. Note that most terms in these energy equations are in turn closure terms. It is suggested to evaluate these terms using reference data from detailed turbulence code simulations in future work.

Resonant filament-assisted mode conversion (FAMC) scattering of high harmonic fast waves (HHFW) by cylindrical field-aligned density inhomogeneities can efficiently redirect a fraction of the launched HHFW power flux into the parallel direction. Within a simplified analytic approach, this contribution compares the parallel propagation, reflection and dissipation of nearly resonant FAMC modes for three magnetic field line geometries in the scrape-off layer, in the presence of radio-frequency (RF) sheaths at field line extremities and phenomenological wave damping in the plasma volume. When a FAMC mode, excited at the HHFW antenna parallel location and guided along the open magnetic field lines, impinges onto a boundary at normal incidence, we show that it can excite sheath RF oscillations, even toroidally far away from the HHFW launcher. The RF sheaths then dissipate part of the power flux carried by the incident mode, while another part reflects into the FAMC mode with the opposite wave vector parallel to the magnetic field. The reflected FAMC mode in turn propagates and can possibly interact with the sheath at the opposite field line boundary. The two counter-propagating modes then form in the bounded magnetic flux tube a lossy cavity excited by the HHFW scattering. We investigate how the presence of field line boundaries affects the total HHFW power redirected into the filament, and its splitting between sheath and volume losses, as a function of relevant parameters in the model.

Based on the chemical reaction model proposed by Park, the ‘blackout’ of a reentry vehicle is studied in this paper. The temperature, pressure and electron density distribution characteristics around the reentry vehicle were simulated at various flight speeds and altitudes by USim. Subsequently, the scattering matrix method was used to study the transmission characteristics of terahertz waves in ‘blackout’. The simulation results show that the temperature around the aircraft is mainly affected by speed, the pressure is mainly affected by the altitude and electron density is affected by both of these factors. The calculation results show that the transmission characteristics of terahertz waves in plasma are mainly affected by electron density, while the effects of temperature and pressure cannot be ignored either.

Particle acceleration via magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in astrophysical plasmas. Experimental architectures are able to confirm a wide variety of particle dynamics following the two-dimensional Sweet–Parker model, but are limited in their reproduction of the fan-spine magnetic field topology about three-dimensional (3-D) null points. Specifically, there is not yet an experiment featuring driven 3-D torsional magnetic reconnection. To move in this direction, this paper expands on recent work toward the design of an experimental infrastructure for inducing 3-D torsional fan reconnection by predicting feasible particle acceleration profiles. Solutions to the steady-state, kinematic, resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations are used to numerically calculate particle trajectories from a localized resistivity profile using well-understood laboratory plasma parameters. We confine a thin, 10 eV helium sheath following the snowplough model into the region of this localized resistivity and find that it is accelerated to energies of ${\approx }2$ keV. This sheath is rapidly accelerated and focused along the spine axis propagating a few centimetres from the reconnection region. These dynamics suggest a novel architecture that may hold promise for future experiments studying solar coronal particle acceleration and for technology applications such as spacecraft propulsion.

Radio frequency (RF) sheaths occur under a wide variety of conditions when RF waves, material surfaces and plasma coexist. RF sheaths are of special importance in describing the interaction of ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) waves with the boundary plasma in tokamaks, stellarators and other magnetic confinement devices. In this article the basic physics of RF sheaths is discussed in the context of magnetic fusion research. Techniques for modelling RF sheaths, their interaction with RF wave fields and the resulting consequences are highlighted. The article is intended as a guide for the early-career ICRF researcher, but it may equally well serve to provide an overview of basic RF sheath concepts and modelling directions for any interested fusion scientist.

A model is presented for the ion distribution function in a plasma at a solid target with a magnetic field $\boldsymbol {B}$ inclined at a small angle, $\alpha \ll 1$ (in radians), to the target. Adiabatic electrons are assumed, requiring $\alpha \gg \sqrt {Zm_{e}/m_{i}}$, where $m_{e}$ and $m_{i}$ are the electron and ion mass, respectively, and $Z$ is the charge state of the ion. An electric field $\boldsymbol {E}$ is present to repel electrons, and so the characteristic size of the electrostatic potential $\phi$ is set by the electron temperature $T_{e}$, $e\phi \sim T_{e}$, where $e$ is the proton charge. An asymptotic scale separation between the Debye length $\lambda _{D} = \sqrt {\epsilon _0 T_{{e}} / e^{2} n_{{e}} }$, the ion sound gyro-radius $\rho _{s} = \sqrt { m_{i} ( ZT_{e} + T_{i} ) } / (ZeB)$ and the size of the collisional region $d_{c} = \alpha \lambda _{\textrm {mfp}}$ is assumed, $\lambda _{D} \ll \rho _{s} \ll d_{c}$. Here $\epsilon _0$ is the permittivity of free space, $n_{e}$ is the electron density, $T_{i}$ is the ion temperature, $B= |\boldsymbol {B}|$ and $\lambda _{\textrm {mfp}}$ is the collisional mean free path of an ion. The form of the ion distribution function is assumed at distances $x$ from the wall such that $\rho _{s} \ll x \ll d_{c}$, that is, collisions are not treated. A self-consistent solution of the electrostatic potential for $x \sim \rho _{s}$ is required to solve for the quasi-periodic ion trajectories and for the ion distribution function at the target. The large gyro-orbit model presented here allows to bypass the numerical solution of $\phi (x)$ and results in an analytical expression for the ion distribution function at the target. It assumes that $\tau =T_{i}/(ZT_{e})\gg 1$, and ignores the electric force on the quasi-periodic ion trajectory until close to the target. For $\tau \gtrsim 1$, the model provides an extremely fast approximation to energy–angle distributions of ions at the target. These can be used to make sputtering predictions.

This work addresses one-dimensional evolution of a collisionless plasma next to a solid surface that is immersed into the plasma instantaneously. In particular, we consider how the self-similar rarefaction wave (Allen & Andrews, J. Plasma Phys., vol. 4, 1970, pp. 187–194) establishes dynamically and how the electron reflection from the surface modifies the structure of the rarefaction wave and the Debye sheath. We demonstrate that a sufficiently strong reflection eliminates the Debye sheath and changes the wall potential and the plasma flow parameters significantly. The paper presents numerical results that illustrate the developed analytical theory.

The paper analyses the penetration of a magnetic field into the plasma bridge of nanosecond and microsecond opening switches. For switches with a conduction time of ~100 ns, simple formulae are derived to estimate the magnetic field velocity in collisionless and collisional plasmas. It is shown that in both cases this velocity is determined by the magnetic field rise rate to plasma density ratio raised to the power of 1/2. As the conduction time is increased to ~1 ${\rm \mu}$s, the field velocity starts to depend on the plasma aggregation by a magnetic piston. At the same time, irrespective of the conduction time, the electron flow velocity is limited by the radial drift velocity in crossed magnetic and polarization electric fields. Such a limitation suppresses the current channel conductivity with respect to the Spitzer value by a factor equal to the electron magnetization parameter raised to one or another power. On completion of the conduction phase, the rate of rise of the switch resistance is proportional to the electron drift velocity. The peak switch voltage obtained in calculations is compared with its values recorded in experiments on mega-ampere current switching. A procedure is also presented for calculating the switch parameters to obtain the maximum possible voltage in the phase of current cutoff.

The island divertor topology of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) scrape-off-layer exhibits regions of highly varying connection length. Here, we present drift-plane simulations of seeded filaments in regions of sharp transitions in parallel connection length – a parameter which dictates the propagation regime for plasma blobs. It is determined that a transition in parallel connection length alters the trajectory of filaments; filaments which enter regions of lower connection length are decelerated, and vice versa. It is also determined that if the lobes of a potential dipole created by diamagnetic drifts within the filament exist in two regions of distinct parallel connection length, the filament is then steered towards the region of higher connection length. The extreme case of a narrow region of varying connection length can also alter the trajectory of a filament, depending on the extent of this region. Finally, simulations mimicking the view from the W7-X gas puff imaging (GPI) diagnostic view plane are presented. It is determined that filaments in the view of the W7-X GPI diagnostic exhibit a predominantly poloidal propagation due to the radial electric field, since the radial velocity is relatively small.

The effects of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) on the structure of a dusty plasma sheath are investigated. Here, it is assumed that the electrons obey a Druyvesteyn-type distribution with a parameter $x$ controlling the shape of the EEDF. The Druyvesteyn-like distribution tends to a Maxwellian distribution as $x$ varies from 2 to 1. Using the orbital motion limited theory, the incident electron current on the dust is evaluated for a given $x$. The results of numerical simulations are compared with those of a Maxwellian distribution. It was found that the sheath dynamics depends strongly on the magnitude of $x$. The sheath thickness increases monotonically with increasing $x$. However, the absolute dust charge decreases and, as a result, the accelerating ion drag force is weakened and thus the dust number density is enhanced. For a plasma with a Druyvesteyn-like distribution, the Bohm speed is a function of $x$ and increases with increasing $x$.

The problem of plasma expansion into a vacuum is revisited with the addition of a finite boundary condition; an electrically insulated surface. As plasma expands towards a charge-accumulating surface, the leading electron cloud charges the surface negatively, which in turn repels electrons and attracts ions. This plasma–surface interaction is shown to result in a feedback process which accelerates the plasma expansion. In addition, we examine the decrease in (negative) surface potential and associated near-surface electron density. To investigate this plasma coupling with an electrically floating surface, we develop an analytic model including four neighbouring plasma regions: (i) undisturbed plasma, (ii) quasi-neutral self-similar expansion, (iii) ion front boundary layer and (iv) electron cloud. A key innovation in our approach is a self-contained analytic approximation of the ion front boundary layer, providing a spatially continuous electric field model for the early phase of bounded plasma expansion.

The linear theory stability of different collisionless plasma sheath structures, including the classic sheath, inverse sheath and space-charge limited (SCL) sheath, is investigated as a typical eigenvalue problem. The three background plasma sheaths formed between a Maxwellian plasma source and a dielectric wall with a fully self-consistent secondary electron emission condition are solved by recent developed 1D3V (one-dimensional space and three-dimensional velocities), steady-state, collisionless kinetic sheath model, within a wide range of Maxwellian plasma electron temperature $T_{e}$. Then, the eigenvalue equations of sheath plasma fluctuations through the three sheaths are numerically solved, and the corresponding damping and growth rates $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ are found: (i) under the classic sheath structure (i.e. $T_{e}<T_{ec}$ (the first threshold)), there are three damping solutions (i.e. $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{1}$, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{2}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{3}$, $0>\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{1}>\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{2}>\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}_{3}$) for most cases, but there is only one growth-rate solution $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ when $T_{e}\rightarrow T_{ec}$ due to the inhomogeneity of sheath being very weak; (ii) under the inverse sheath structure, which arises when $T_{e}>T_{ec}$, there are no background ions in the sheath so that the fluctuations are stable; (iii) under the SCL sheath conditions (i.e. $T_{e}\geqslant T_{e\text{SCL}}$, the second threshold), the obvious ion streaming through the sheath region again emerges and the three damping solutions are again found.

The magnetic presheath is a boundary layer occurring when magnetized plasma is in contact with a wall and the angle $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$ between the wall and the magnetic field $\boldsymbol{B}$ is oblique. Here, we consider the fusion-relevant case of a shallow-angle, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\ll 1$, electron-repelling sheath, with the electron density given by a Boltzmann distribution, valid for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}/\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}+1}\gg \sqrt{m_{\text{e}}/m_{\text{i}}}$, where $m_{\text{e}}$ is the electron mass, $m_{\text{i}}$ is the ion mass, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}=T_{\text{i}}/ZT_{\text{e}}$, $T_{\text{e}}$ is the electron temperature, $T_{\text{i}}$ is the ion temperature and $Z$ is the ionic charge state. The thickness of the magnetic presheath is of the order of a few ion sound Larmor radii $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}_{\text{s}}=\sqrt{m_{\text{i}}(ZT_{\text{e}}+T_{\text{i}})}/ZeB$, where e is the proton charge and $B=|\boldsymbol{B}|$ is the magnitude of the magnetic field. We study the dependence on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$ of the electrostatic potential and ion distribution function in the magnetic presheath by using a set of prescribed ion distribution functions at the magnetic presheath entrance, parameterized by $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$. The kinetic model is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to Chodura’s fluid model at small ion temperature, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}\ll 1$, for $|\text{ln}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}|>3|\text{ln}\,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}|\gg 1$. In this limit, despite the fact that fluid equations give a reasonable approximation to the potential, ion gyro-orbits acquire a spatial extent that occupies a large portion of the magnetic presheath. At large ion temperature, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}\gg 1$, relevant because $T_{\text{i}}$ is measured to be a few times larger than $T_{\text{e}}$ near divertor targets of fusion devices, ions reach the Debye sheath entrance (and subsequently the wall) at a shallow angle whose size is given by $\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}$ or $1/\sqrt{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}$, depending on which is largest.

The influence of the azimuthal electron drift on anomalous erosion and the sheath profile in a stationary plasma thruster (SPT) is analysed in this article. It is found that the anomalous erosion has a self-organized structure, which is formed by the interaction between the plasma and the ceramic walls. In order to interpret the mechanism of the azimuthal erosion structure, a particle in cell (PIC) model is developed to simulate the azimuthal sheath. The results show that the electron azimuthal Hall drift due to crossed electric and magnetic field plays a key role in the azimuthal erosion evolution process. Electron Hall drift can generate an asymmetric sheath structure and induce azimuthal sheath oscillation. Furthermore, an asymmetric sheath caused by the integrated effect of the azimuthal irregular wall structure and azimuthal Hall drift will result in the azimuthal movement of ions. Based on the sheath simulated results, an erosion model is used to simulate the azimuthal erosion evolution. An asymmetric erosion profile caused by the azimuthal asymmetric ion sputtering is found.

We investigate the question of how plasma currents circulate and close in the scrape-off-layer (SOL) of convection-limited tokamak plasmas. A simplified two-fluid model describes how currents must evacuate charge at the sheaths due to cross-field currents that are not divergence-free. These include turbulence-driven polarization currents and poloidally asymmetric equilibrium diamagnetic currents. The theory provides an estimate for the radial profile of the floating potential, which reveals a dipolar structure like the one observed experimentally. Simulations with a fluid turbulence code provide evidence for the predicted behaviour of currents and floating potential.

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental energy conversion mechanism in nature. Major attempts to study this process in controlled settings on Earth have largely been limited to reproducing approximately two-dimensional (2-D) reconnection dynamics. Other experiments describing reconnection near three-dimensional null points are non-driven, and do not induce any of the 3-D modes of spine fan, torsional fan or torsional spine reconnection. In order to study these important 3-D modes observed in astrophysical plasmas (e.g. the solar atmosphere), laboratory set-ups must be designed to induce driven reconnection about an isolated magnetic null point. As such, we consider the limited range of fundamental resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and kinetic parameters of dynamic laboratory plasmas that are necessary to induce the torsional spine reconnection (TSR) mode characterized by a driven rotational slippage of field lines – a feature that has yet to be achieved in operational laboratory magnetic reconnection experiments. Leveraging existing reconnection models, we show that within a ${\lesssim}1~\text{m}^{3}$ apparatus, TSR can be achieved in dense plasma regimes (${\sim}10^{24}~\text{m}^{-3}$) in magnetic fields of ${\sim}10^{-1}~\text{T}$. We find that MHD and kinetic parameters predict reconnection in thin ${\lesssim}20~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ current sheets on time scales of ${\lesssim}10~\text{ns}$. While these plasma regimes may not explicitly replicate the plasma parameters of observed astrophysical phenomena, studying the dynamics of the TSR mode within achievable set-ups signifies an important step in understanding the fundamentals of driven 3-D magnetic reconnection and the self-organization of current sheets. Explicit control of this reconnection mode may have implications for understanding particle acceleration in astrophysical environments, and may even have practical applications to fields such as spacecraft propulsion.

Five-dimensional gyrokinetic continuum simulations of electrostatic plasma turbulence in a straight, open-field-line geometry have been performed using a full-$f$ discontinuous-Galerkin approach implemented in the Gkeyll code. While various simplifications have been used for now, such as long-wavelength approximations in the gyrokinetic Poisson equation and the Hamiltonian, these simulations include the basic elements of a fusion-device scrape-off layer: localised sources to model plasma outflow from the core, cross-field turbulent transport, parallel flow along magnetic field lines, and parallel losses at the limiter or divertor with sheath-model boundary conditions. The set of sheath-model boundary conditions used in the model allows currents to flow through the walls. In addition to details of the numerical approach, results from numerical simulations of turbulence in the Large Plasma Device, a linear device featuring straight magnetic field lines, are presented.
