We analyse the steady viscoelastic fluid flow in slowly varying contracting channels of arbitrary shape and present a theory based on the lubrication approximation for calculating the flow rate–pressure drop relation at low and high Deborah ($De$) numbers. Unlike most prior theoretical studies leveraging the Oldroyd-B model, we describe the fluid viscoelasticity using a FENE-CR model and examine how the polymer chains’ finite extensibility impacts the pressure drop. We employ the low-Deborah-number lubrication analysis to provide analytical expressions for the pressure drop up to $O(De^4)$. We further consider the ultra-dilute limit and exploit a one-way coupling between the parabolic velocity and elastic stresses to calculate the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid for arbitrary values of the Deborah number. Such an approach allows us to elucidate elastic stress contributions governing the pressure drop variations and the effect of finite extensibility for all $De$. We validate our theoretical predictions with two-dimensional numerical simulations and find excellent agreement. We show that, at low Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid monotonically decreases with $De$, similar to the previous results for the Oldroyd-B and FENE-P fluids. However, at high Deborah numbers, in contrast to a linear decrease for the Oldroyd-B fluid, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid exhibits a non-monotonic variation due to finite extensibility, first decreasing and then increasing with $De$. Nevertheless, even at sufficiently high Deborah numbers, the pressure drop of the FENE-CR fluid in the ultra-dilute and lubrication limits is lower than the corresponding Newtonian pressure drop.

We study the dynamic deflation of a hydraulic fracture subject to fluid withdrawal through a narrow conduit located at the centre of the fracture. Recent work revealed a self-similar dipole-flow regime, when the influence of material toughness is negligibly small. The focus of the current work is on the influence of material toughness, which leads to an additional self-similar regime of fracture deflation with fixed frontal locations in the toughness-dominated regime. The two limiting regimes can be distinguished by a dimensionless material toughness $\Pi _k$, defined based on a comparison with the influence of the viscous thin film flow within the fracture: $\Pi _k \to 0$ indicates the dipole-flow regime, while $\Pi _k \to \infty$ indicates the fixed-length regime. For intermediate $\Pi _k$, the fracture’s front continues to propagate during an initial period of deflation before it remains pinned at a fixed location thereafter. A regime diagram is then derived, with key scaling behaviours for the frontal dynamics, pressure and volume evolution summarised in a table for the self-similar stage. A comparison is also attempted between theoretical predictions and available experimental observations of viscous backflows from transparent solid gelatins.

We study the dynamics of fracture deflation following hydraulic fracturing of an infinite elastic solid, with fluid removal from a narrow conduit at the centre. This process involves coupled lubricating flow and elastic deformation, now subject to appropriate descriptions of fluid removal through the conduit towards the ambient, driven by elastic stresses and extraction/suction. When the influence of material toughness is negligible, the dynamics is found to be governed by two dimensionless parameters that describe the relative influence of elasticity-driven backflow ($\Pi _c$) and ambient-pressure-driven backflow ($\Pi _e$), respectively. We also found that the fracture’s thickness eventually approaches zero at the centre, while the fracture evolves into a self-similar shape of the dipole type that conserves the dipole moment $M$. The fracture’s front continues to elongate according to $x_f \propto t^{1/9}$, while the total fluid volume within the fracture decreases according to $V \propto t^{-1/9}$. The model and solutions might find use in practical problems to estimate the rate of backflow and effective permeability of a fractured reservoir once pressure is released.

In binary mixtures, the lifetimes of surface bubbles can be five orders of magnitude longer than those in pure liquids because of slightly different compositions of the bulk and the surfaces, leading to a thickness-dependent surface tension of thin films. Taking advantage of the resulting simple surface rheology, we derive the equations describing the thickness, flow velocity and surface tension of a single liquid film, using thermodynamics of ideal solutions and thin film mechanics. Numerical resolution shows that, after a first step of tension equilibration, the Laplace-pressure-driven flow is associated with a flow at the interface driven by an induced Marangoni stress. The resulting parabolic flow with mobile interfaces in the film further leads to its pinching, eventually causing its rupture. Our model paves the way for a better understanding of the rupture dynamics of liquid films of binary mixtures.

We consider the flow of a volume $\mathcal {V} = q t^\alpha$ of viscous fluid injected into a gap $H$ between two horizontal plates ($q$ and $\alpha$ are positive constants, $t$ is time). When the viscosity of the displaced fluid is negligible, the injected fluid forms a slug in contact with both plates connected (at a moving grounding line) to a gravity current (GC) with a downward-inclined interface. Hutchinson et al. (J. Fluid Mech., 598, 2023, pp. A4–1–13) considered a constant source ($\alpha = 1$) of Newtonian fluid at the center of an axisymmetric gap; the flow, governed by the parameter $J$ (the height ratio of the unconfined GC to $H$), admits a similarity solution. Here, the self-similar flow theory is (a) extended to rectangular geometry and power-law fluids, and (b) simplified. Similarity appears when $\alpha = n/(n+1)$ (two-dimensional) and $\alpha = 2n/(n+1)$ (axisymmetric), with propagation $\sim t^\beta$, where $\beta /\alpha = 1$ and $1/2$, respectively, and $n-1$ is the power of the shear in the viscosity law ($n=1$ for Newtonian fluid). The flow is governed by a single parameter $J$, representing the above-mentioned ratio. For small $J$, the GC is mostly unconfined; for large $J$, almost all the injected fluid is in contact with both boundaries of the gap. For given geometry and $n$, we solve one ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the reduced thickness over the reduced length $0\lt y \leqslant 1$, with a singular-regular condition at $y=1$. The details of the confined GC, functions of $J$, follow by simple formulae.

Even though liquid foams are ubiquitous in everyday life and industrial processes, their ageing and eventual destruction remain a puzzling problem. Soap films are known to drain through marginal regeneration, which depends upon periodic patterns of film thickness along the rim of the film. The origin of these patterns in horizontal films (i.e. neglecting gravity) still resists theoretical modelling. In this work, we theoretically address the case of a flat horizontal film with a thickness perturbation, either positive (a bump) or negative (a groove), which is initially invariant under translation along one direction. This pattern relaxes towards a flat film by capillarity. By performing a linear stability analysis on this evolving pattern, we demonstrate that the invariance is spontaneously broken, causing the elongated thickness perturbation pattern to destabilise into a necklace of circular spots. The unstable and stable modes are derived analytically in well-defined limits, and the full evolution of the thickness profile is characterised. The original destabilisation process we identify may be relevant to explain the appearance of the marginal regeneration patterns near a meniscus and thus shed new light on soap-film drainage.

The lubricated motion of an object near a deformable boundary presents striking subtleties arising from the coupling between the elasticity of the boundary and lubricated flow, including but not limited to the emergence of a lift force acting on the object despite the zero Reynolds number. In this study, we characterize the hydrodynamic forces and torques felt by a sphere translating in close proximity to a fluid interface, separating the viscous medium of the sphere's motion from an infinitely more viscous medium. We employ lubrication theory and perform a perturbation analysis in capillary compliance. The dominant response of the interface owing to surface tension results in a long-ranged interface deformation, which leads to a modification of the forces and torques with respect to the rigid reference case, that we characterize in detail with scaling arguments and numerical integrations.

Surface roughness significantly modifies the liquid film thickness entrained when dip coating a solid surface, particularly at low coating velocity. Using a homogenization approach, we present a predictive model for determining the liquid film thickness coated on a rough plate. A homogenized boundary condition at an equivalent flat surface is used to model the rough boundary, accounting for both flow through the rough texture layer, through an interface permeability term, and slip at the equivalent surface. While the slip term accounts for tangential velocity induced by viscous shear stress, accurately predicting the film thickness requires the interface permeability term to account for additional tangential flow driven by pressure gradients along the interface. We find that a greater degree of slip and interface permeability signifies less viscous stress that would promote deposition, thus reducing the amount of free film coated above the textures. The model is found to be in good agreement with experimental measurements, and requires no fitting parameters. Furthermore, our model may be applied to arbitrary periodic roughness patterns, opening the door to flexible characterization of surfaces found in natural and industrial coating processes.

Developed in this study is a theoretical description of squeeze-film lubrication systems that involve the flexural oscillation of a thin plate near a parallel wall. Such systems were discovered in recent experiments to produce load-bearing attractive forces that are a thousandfold stronger than those generated by rigid oscillators, which typically favour repulsion. Analyses of squeeze-film gas flow driven by a presumed plate deformation reproduce the observed magnification of attractive load capacity, but exhibit serious discrepancies with crucial aspects of the experimental measurements – most importantly, the precise distribution of air pressure along the film. The discrepancies are resolved in this study by accounting for the presence of two-way-coupled fluid–structure interactions whereby the undulations of the plate, modelled here with use of the classical Kirchhoff–Love equation, are affected non-negligibly by the evolving pressure, described by a modified Reynolds lubrication equation that accounts for compressibility. The resulting problem of elastohydrodynamic lubrication is solved with use of perturbation methods that exploit the limit of small oscillation amplitudes. The analysis ultimately provides an explicit expression specifying the attractive load capacity of a squeeze-film system as a function of relevant operating parameters – including, in particular, the amplitude and frequency of the localized excitation force exerted on the plate. The rudimentary theory derived here may be readily generalized to guide the analysis and development of a wide variety of emerging engineering systems that exploit the vibration-induced squeeze-film effect – such as wall-climbing soft robots and contactless grippers.

We model the slip length tribometer (SLT), originally presented by Pelz et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 948, 2022, p. A8) in OpenFOAM. The plate tribometer is especially designed to simultaneously measure viscosity and slip length for lubrication gaps in the range of approximately 10 $\mathrm {\mu }$m at temperatures and surface roughnesses relevant to technical applications, with a temperature range of $-30$ to $100\,^\circ \mathrm {C}$ and surface roughness ranging from $10\ \mathrm {nm}$ to $1\ \mathrm {\mu }\mathrm {m}$. A simplified analytical model presented by Pelz et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 948, 2022, p. A8) infers the slip length of the plate from the experimentally measured torque and the plate gap height. The present work verifies the analytical model using axisymmetric flow simulations and presents the effect of inlet on the numerical velocity profiles. The simulation results are in very good agreement with the results of the analytical model. The main conclusion drawn from this study is the validation of the Navier-slip boundary condition as an effective model for partial slip in computational fluid dynamics simulations and the negligible influence of the inlet on the fluid flow between the SLT's plates.

Viscous gravity currents play a fundamental role in many natural and industrial applications, where practical scenarios often involve the current propagating over rigid curvilinear surfaces. In this study, we employ lubrication theory to develop low-dimensional models for such two-dimensional and axisymmetric propagation, resulting from the release of a finite volume of viscous fluid. A key dimensionless parameter is identified, representing the volume ratio between the released fluid and the curvilinear surface, which governs the current evolution. By simplifying the curvilinear surface with linear–exponential and sinusoidal shapes, we observe distinct flow behaviours. Over linear–exponential surfaces, the current may become trapped, bypass the peak or flow downward, while over sinusoidal surfaces, the propagation is hindered compared with the behaviour over horizontal straight surfaces. The low-dimensional models are validated using the volume of fluid method in computational fluid dynamics, showing consistent predictions of the current evolution over rigid curvilinear surfaces.

We theoretically and experimentally study gravity currents of a Newtonian fluid advancing in a two-dimensional, infinite and saturated porous domain over a horizontal impermeable bed. The driving force is due to the density difference between the denser flowing fluid and the lighter, immobile ambient fluid. The current is taken to be in the Darcy–Forchheimer regime, where a term quadratic in the seepage velocity accounts for inertial contributions to the resistance. The volume of fluid of the current varies as a function of time as $\sim T^{\gamma }$, where the exponent parameterizes the case of constant volume subject to dam break ($\gamma =0$), of constant ($\gamma =1$), waning ($\gamma <1$) and waxing inflow rate ($\gamma >1$). The nonlinear governing equations, developed within the lubrication theory, admit self-similar solutions for some combinations of the parameters involved and for two limiting conditions of low and high local Forchheimer number, a dimensionless quantity involving the local slope of the current profile. Another parameter $N$ expresses the relative importance of the nonlinear term in Darcy–Forchheimer's law; values of $N$ in practical applications may vary in a large interval around unity, e.g. $N\in [10^{-5},10^{2}]$; in our experiments, $N\in [2.8,64]$. Sixteen experiments with three different grain sizes of the porous medium and different inflow rates corroborate the theory: the experimental nose speed and current profiles are in good agreement with the theory. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour of the self-similar solutions is in excellent agreement with the numerical results of the direct integration of the full problem, confirming the validity of a relatively simple one-dimensional model.

The flow near a moving contact line depends on the dynamic contact angle, viscosity ratio and capillary number. We report experiments involving immersing a plate into a liquid bath, concurrently measuring the interface shape, interfacial velocity and fluid flow using digital image processing and particle image velocimetry. All experiments were performed at low plate speeds to maintain small Reynolds and capillary numbers for comparison with viscous theories. The dynamic contact angle, measured in the viscous phase, was kept below $90^{\circ }$ and the viscosity ratio, $\lambda < 1$. This region of parameter space is largely unexplored for advancing contact lines. An important aim of the present study is to provide new experimental data against which new contact line models can be developed. The flow field is directly compared against the prediction from the viscous theory of Huh & Scriven (J. Colloid Interface Sci., vol. 35, issue 1, 1971, pp. 85–101) but with a slight modification involving the curved interface. Remarkable agreement is found between experiments and theory across a wide parameter range. The prediction for interfacial speed from Huh & Scriven is also in excellent agreement with experiments except in the vicinity of the contact line. Material points along the interface were found to rapidly slow down near the contact line, thus alleviating the singularity at the moving contact line. To the best of our knowledge, such a detailed test of theoretical models has not been performed before and we hope the present study will spur new modelling efforts in the field.

Liquid droplet dynamics are widely used in biological and engineering applications, which contain complex interfacial instabilities and pattern formation such as droplet merging, splitting and transport. This paper studies a class of mean field control formulations for these droplet dynamics, which can be used to control and manipulate droplets in applications. We first formulate the droplet dynamics as gradient flows of free energies in modified optimal transport metrics with nonlinear mobilities. We then design an optimal control problem for these gradient flows. As an example, a lubrication equation for a thin volatile liquid film laden with an active suspension is developed, with control achieved through its activity field. Lastly, we apply the primal–dual hybrid gradient algorithm with high-order finite-element methods to simulate the proposed mean field control problems. Numerical examples, including droplet formation, bead-up/spreading, transport, and merging/splitting on a two-dimensional spatial domain, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mean field control mechanism.

The confined Stokesian dynamics (CSD) algorithm recently reported equilibrium properties but was missing hydrodynamic functions required for suspension stress and non-equilibrium properties. In this first of a two-part series, we expand the CSD algorithm to model the traceless part of the stress tensor. To obtain quantities needed to solve the integral expressions for the stress, we developed a general method to solve Stokes’ equations in bispherical coordinates. We calculate the traceless stress tensor for arbitrary particle-to-enclosure size ratio. We next compute rheology of a confined suspension by implementing the stresslet hydrodynamic coefficients into CSD, yielding the deviatoric part of the many-body hydrodynamic stresslet. We employed energy methods to relate this stresslet to the high-frequency viscosity of the confined suspension, finding an increase in viscous dissipation with crowding and confinement well beyond the unconfined value. We show that confinement effects on viscosity are dominated by near-field interactions between the particles that reside very near the cavity wall (rather than particle–wall interactions). Surprisingly, this near-field effect is stronger than the viscosity of an unconfined suspension, showing that entropic exclusion driven by the wall sets up many lubrication interactions that then generate strong viscous dissipation. The limiting case of a particle near a flat wall reveals a correction to prior literature. The theory presented in this work can be expanded to study the Brownian contribution to the viscosity of confined suspensions in and away from equilibrium. In part 2, we report the osmotic pressure, via the trace of the stress tensor.

The nonlinear waves in a sheared liquid film on a horizontal plate at small Reynolds numbers are examined by theoretical and numerical approaches. The analysis employs the long-wave approximation along with finite difference schemes. The results show that the surface tension can suppress disturbances and prevent the occurrence of singularities. While the film flow is driven by the shear stress on the interface, its instability highly depends on the magnitude and direction of gravity. Specifically, when the direction of gravity is opposite to the wall-normal direction, perturbations are stabilized by gravity. In contrast, when these two directions are the same, the gravitational force is destabilizing, and stationary travelling waves can exist if a balance is reached between the effects of gravity and surface tension. For the steady solitary waves, there are quasi-periodic oscillations occurring between two stationary points, indicating the presence of heteroclinic trajectories. For periodic waves, the evolutions are sensitive to several parameters and initial disturbances, while one steady-state wave exhibits a sine function-like behaviour.

Diffusion-driven flow is a boundary layer flow arising from the interplay of gravity and diffusion in density-stratified fluids when a gravitational field is non-parallel to an impermeable solid boundary. This study investigates diffusion-driven flow within a nonlinearly density-stratified fluid confined between two tilted parallel walls. We introduce an asymptotic expansion inspired by the centre manifold theory, where quantities are expanded in terms of derivatives of the cross-sectional averaged stratified scalar (such as salinity or temperature). This technique provides accurate approximations for velocity, density and pressure fields. Furthermore, we derive an evolution equation describing the cross-sectional averaged stratified scalar. This equation takes the form of the traditional diffusion equation but replaces the constant diffusion coefficient with a positive-definite function dependent on the solution's derivative. Numerical simulations validate the accuracy of our approximations. Our investigation of the effective equation reveals that the density profile depends on a non-dimensional parameter denoted as $\gamma$ representing the flow strength. In the large $\gamma$ limit, the system is approximated by a diffusion process with an augmented diffusion coefficient of $1+\cot ^{2}\theta$, where $\theta$ signifies the inclination angle of the channel domain. This parameter regime is where diffusion-driven flow exhibits its strongest mixing ability. Conversely, in the small $\gamma$ regime, the density field behaves like pure diffusion with distorted isopycnals. Lastly, we show that the classical thin film equation aligns with the results obtained using the proposed expansion in the small $\gamma$ regime but fails to accurately describe the dynamics of the density field for large $\gamma$.

We investigate theoretically the steady incompressible viscoelastic flow in a rigid axisymmetric cylindrical pipe with varying cross-section. We use the Oldroyd-B viscoelastic constitutive equation to model the fluid viscoelasticity. First, we derive exact general formulae: for the total average pressure-drop as a function of the wall shear rate and the viscoelastic axial normal extra-stress; for the viscoelastic extra-stress tensor and the Trouton ratio as functions of the fluid velocity on the axis of symmetry; and for the viscoelastic extra-stress tensor along the wall in terms of the shear rate at the wall. Then we exploit the classic lubrication approximation, valid for small values of the square of the aspect ratio of the pipe, to simplify the original governing equations. The final equations are solved analytically using a regular perturbation scheme in terms of the Deborah number, De, up to eighth order in De. For a hyperbolically shaped pipe, we reveal that the reduced pressure-drop and the Trouton ratio can be recast in terms of a modified Deborah number, Dem, and the polymer viscosity ratio, η, only. Furthermore, we enhance the convergence and accuracy of the eighth-order solutions by deriving transformed analytical formulae using Padé diagonal approximants. The results show the decrease of the pressure drop and the enhancement of the Trouton ratio with increasing Dem and/or increasing η. Comparison of the transformed solutions with numerical simulations of the lubrication equations using pseudospectral methods shows excellent agreement between the results, even for high values of Dem and all values of η, revealing the robustness, validity and efficiency of the theoretical methods and techniques developed in this work. Last, it is shown that the exact solution for the Trouton ratio gives a well-defined and finite solution for any value of Dem and reveals the reason for the failure of the corresponding high-order perturbation series for Dem > 1/2.

We present an experimental investigation aimed at understanding the effects of surface roughness on the time-mean drag coefficient ($\bar {C}_{D}$) of finite-span cylinders ($\text {span/diameter} = \text {aspect ratio}$, $0.51 \le AR \le 6.02$) freely rolling without slip on an inclined plane. While lubrication theory predicts an infinite drag force for ideally smooth cylinders in contact with a smooth surface, experiments yield finite drag coefficients. We propose that surface roughness introduces an effective gap ($G_{eff}$) resulting in a finite drag force while allowing physical contact between the cylinder and the plane. This study combines measurements of surface roughness for both the cylinder and the plane panel to determine a total relative roughness ($\xi$) that can effectively describe $G_{eff}$ at the point of contact. It is observed that the measured $\bar {C}_{D}$ increases as $\xi$ decreases, aligning with predictions of lubrication theory. Furthermore, the measured $\bar {C}_{D}$ approximately matches combined analytical and numerical predictions for a smooth cylinder and plane when the imposed gap is approximately equal to the mean peak roughness ($R_p$) for rough cylinders, and one standard deviation peak roughness ($R_{p, 1\sigma }$) for relatively smooth cylinders. As the time-mean Reynolds number ($\overline {Re}$) increases, the influence of surface roughness on $\bar {C}_{D}$ decreases, indicating that wake drag becomes dominant at higher $\overline {Re}$. The cylinder aspect ratio ($AR$) is found to have only a minor effect on $\bar {C}_{D}$. Flow visualisations are also conducted to identify critical flow transitions and these are compared with visualisations previously obtained numerically. Variations in $\xi$ have little effect on the cylinder wake. Instead, $AR$ was observed to have a more pronounced effect on the flow structures observed. The Strouhal number ($St$) associated with the cylinder wake shedding was observed to increase with $\overline {Re}$, while demonstrating little dependence on $AR$.

We derive a generalised asymptotic model for the flow of a thin fluid film over an arbitrarily parameterised non-axisymmetric curved substrate surface based on the lubrication approximation. In addition to surface tension, gravity and centrifugal force, our model incorporates the effects of the Coriolis force and disjoining pressure, together with a non-uniform initial condition, which have not been widely considered in existing literature. We use this model to investigate the impact of the Coriolis force and fingering instability on the spreading of a non-axisymmetric spin-coated film at a range of substrate angular velocities, first on a flat substrate, and then on parabolic cylinder- and saddle-shaped curved substrates. We show that, on flat substrates, the Coriolis force has a negligible impact at low angular velocities, and at high angular velocities results in a small deflection of fingers formed at the contact line against the direction of substrate rotation. On curved substrates, we demonstrate that, as the angular velocity is increased, spin-coated films transition from being dominated by gravitational drainage with no fingering to spreading and fingering in the direction with the greatest component of centrifugal force tangent to the substrate surface. For both curved substrates and all angular velocities considered, we show that the film thickness and total wetted substrate area remain similar over time to those on a flat substrate, with the key difference being the shape of the spreading droplet.
