Ferrihydrite was transformed to goethite and/or hematite at various temperatures, [OH], and [Al]. Increasing temperature and [Al] favored hematite, increasing [OH] favored goethite. A given [Al] induces hematite more effectively at lower [OH]. Al substitution in goethites increased linearly with log[Al], but was independent of temperature. At a given [Al], substitution increased with decreasing [OH]. In a plot of Al/Fe in the goethite against [Al]/[Fe(OH)4−] in solution a straight line was obtained for all preparations independent of [OH].

Adsorption of p-hydroxybenzoate anion on synthetic Fe oxides, hydroxides, and oxyhydroxides (hereafter referred to as oxides) was measured at pH 5.5, and the organic-oxide interaction was characterized using diffuse-reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (DRIFT) spectroscopy. Surface complexes with ferrihydrite, hematite, goethite, and noncrystalline Fe oxide were investigated. Infrared (IR) spectra of the oxides after separation from p-hydroxybenzoate solutions showed the organic to be coordinated by an inner-sphere mechanism to the oxide surface through the carboxylate group. Bidentate binding of the carboxylate was identified to be the dominant type of complexation on the oxides. Although the IR study suggested that goethite formed the strongest surface iron-carboxylate bond, the total amount of organic adsorbed was the least on this oxide. This result suggested that bond energy was less important than adsorption site density in determining the amount of organic anion adsorption. Increasing ionic strength had little effect on adsorption by the noncrystalline Fe oxide, but dramatically decreased adsorption on hematite and goethite. This difference might have been due to anion competition for binding sites. At pH 5.5, the amount of organic adsorbed per unit weight of oxides (in 0.05 M NaClO4) followed the order: ferrihydrite > noncrystalline Fe oxide > hematite ≫ goethite. Adsorption per unit of surface area however, followed the order: ferrihydrite > hematite > noncrystalline Fe oxide ≫ goethite. The hematite adsorption reaction appeared to be driven by entropy, inasmuch as the reaction was endothermic. The difference among the oxides in surface reactivity toward p-hydroxybenzoate is hypothesized to have been caused by differences in both quantity and structural arrangement of reactive sites on the oxide surface.

The influence of Mn2+ on the formation of Fe oxides at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0 and varying Mn/Fe molar ratios (0, 0.1, 1.0, and 10.0) in the FeCl2-NH4OH and FeSO4-NH4OH systems was studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared absorption, transmission electron microscopic, and chemical analyses. In the absence of Mn2+, lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) were the crystalline species formed at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively, in the FeCl2 system, whereas lepidocrocite and goethite (α-FeOOH) and lepidocrocite were the crystalline species formed at pHs of 6.0 and 8.0, respectively, in the FeSO4 system. The amount of Mn coprecipitated with Fe (as much as 8.1 mole % in the FeCl2 system and 15.0 mole % in the FeSO4 system) increased as the initial solution Mn/Fe molar ratio increased from 0 to 10.0, resulting in the perturbation of the crystallization processes of the hydrolytic products of Fe formed. At pH 6.0, the perturbation led to the formation of poorly ordered lepidocrocite, as reflected in the increasing broadening of its characteristic peaks in the XRD patterns. At pH 8.0, poorly ordered iepidocrocite and a honessite-like mineral (Mn-Fe-SO4-H2O) formed in the FeCl2 and FeSO4 systems, respectively.

The influence of manganese oxide minerals (cryptomelane, hausmannite, and pyrolusite) on the formation of iron oxides was studied in the FeCl2-NH4OH system at different Mn/Fe molar ratios (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0) and pHs (3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0) by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared absorption, transmission electron microscopic, and chemical analyses. In the absence of Mn minerals, lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) precipitated at pHs 5.0 and 6.0; however, no precipitate formed at lower pHs. All the Mn minerals studied promoted the precipitation of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. In the presence of Mn oxides, Fe2+ was oxidized to Fe3+, which hydrolyzed and precipitated as noncrystalline and/or different crystalline iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, depending on the nature of the Mn oxides present in the system. Simultaneously, Mn2+ was detected in solution after the reaction by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The presence of cryptomelane and hausmannite resulted in the formation of åkaganeite (β-FeOOH) and magnetite (Fe3O4), respectively. Thus, the effect of Mn oxides on the formation of Fe oxide minerals in the weathering zone merits attention.

Synthetic Al-hematites prepared from ferrihydrites, at low (∼ 100°C) and high (400° and 800°C) temperatures were studied for their morphological, crystallochemical, and infrared (IR) characteristics. Low-temperature Al-hematites had a platy morphology (the plate thickness was inversely related to amount of Al substitution), and the high temperature Al-hematites showed a poorly defined morphology due to interparticle sintering. In the low-temperature Al-hematites shifts in the IR mode frequencies were noted and could be partly explained by a shape factor that was deduced from particle morphology. The intrinsic effect of Al substitution, however, was to produce shifts of as much as 10–15 cm−1 for the highest Al substitution (∼ 16%). Similar shifts were observed for the high-temperature hematites in which morphology was not appreciably affected by Al substitution.

Ferrihydrite prepared in different manners was kept under relative humidities ranging from 75 to 100% and at temperatures of 45° and 55°C for 180 days. Ferrihydrite transformed to hematite and goethite at relative humidities close to 100%, but at lower relative humidities the transformation was less pronounced and hematite was highly favored over goethite. Increasing temperature also favored hematite over goethite, and Al substitution completely prevented goethite formation. These results suggest that hematite can form in relatively dry, warm soils or sediments, although more slowly than in moister environments.

The conversion of akaganéite to goethite and/or hematite in alkaline media has been followed by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The rate of transformation fell and the amount of hematite in the product increased as the [OH−] decreased to < 1 M. Kinetic studies and TEM indicated that the transformation involved dissolution of akaganéite followed by reprecipitation of goethite and/or hematite. The rate-determining step was the dissolution of akaganéite.

Silicate species retarded the formation of goethite + hematite principally by inhibiting dissolution of akaganéite; to a lesser extent, they interfered with the nucleation of goethite. Silicate modified the morphology of goethite, but not hematite.

Comparison of the transformation behavior of akaganéite with that previously observed for ferrihydrite indicated that the composition of the reaction product depended strongly on the transformation conditions, i.e., pH and the presence of foreign species. The nature of the solid precursor was important insofar as its degree of crystallinity governed the dissolution kinetics and its surface properties influenced interaction with any foreign species in the system.

To provide a greater understanding of the crystallization of iron oxides under natural aqueous conditions, the combined effect of an inorganic ion (Mn2+) and a reducing organic ligand (L-cysteine) on the conversion of noncrystalline ferric hydroxide to goethite and/or hematite was investigated at pH 8.

At cysteine: Fe ratios ≥ 0.2, L-cysteine caused noncrystalline iron(III) hydroxide to transform rapidly into goethite at pH 8; in the absence of the organic ligand, hematite was the predominant reaction product. The presence of Mn (≥9 mole %) in the cysteine-ferric hydroxide system retarded crystallization and reduced the goethite-promoting effect of cysteine.

Polarographic measurements showed that the adsorption of cysteine on noncrystalline iron(III) hydroxide was immediately followed by the oxidation of cysteine to the disulfide with simultaneous reduction of a proportion of the interracial ferric ions. The partly reduced noncrystalline iron(III) hydroxide dissolved at pH 8 more rapidly than the original material, thus facilitating the formation of goethite. In Mn(II)-noncrystalline iron(III) hydroxide coprecipitates, the interfacial oxidation/reduction reaction with cysteine (and hence the partial reduction of the noncrystalline phase) was reduced, due to replacement of some interfacial Fe(III) by non-reducible Mn.

At pH 8, uptake of Mn by crystalline iron oxides was low (< 5 mole %). Mn precipitated preferentially as pure Mn phases, either rhodochrosite (in NaHCO3 buffer) or hausmannite (in NH4Cl/NH3 buffer).

Diffractograms of lepidocrocites formed from the oxidation of Fe(II) chloride solutions at pH 7 and 25°C showed differential line broadening with (0k0) reflections being much sharper than (hk0) or (hkl). As the initial [Cl]/[Fe] ratio was increased from 2, crystallinity increased in all axial directions, as defined by the width at half height of diffraction peaks. At [Cl]/[Fe] ratios greater than ~8, the crystallinity did not increase further, and for reflections involving the a-axis direction, it appeared to decrease. Increased [Cl]/[Fe] ratios changed the rate of the oxidation/hydrolysis reactions. These variations reflect changes in the stability and/or composition of the intermediate green rust phase, (Fe(II)Fe(III) hydroxychloride) in the high [Cl] environment. The influence of the [Cl]/[Fe] ratio was related to the experimental conditions employed, especially where they influenced the rate of oxidation.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile analysis of eight synthetic hematite samples was performed to identify the best parameters for determining the apparent mean crystallite dimension (D) and, consequently, surface area, The samples are comparable to soil hematite with respect to crystallinity. The procedure included: a) deconvolution of the XRD peaks to Gauss and Cauchy components and subtraction of the instrumental profile, b) determination of D from full-width at half-maximum, integral breadth, and integral breadth measurements of the Cauchy component, and c) comparison of deduced surface areas with those obtained by the N2-BET adsorption method. As expected, D values are strongly influenced by the broadening parameters. An appropriate selection of peaks is required to obtain size values along the crystallographic axes a (hkl: 110,300) and c (hkl: 104, 116) and to calculate reliable surface areas. Using the Cauchy component of the above peaks, the calculated surface areas compared well with those measured by the N2-BET adsorption method.

The association between clay silicates, and iron and aluminium oxides has a major influence on the chemical and physical properties of soils. In this work the interaction of a kaolin substrate with iron and aluminium oxides and/or hydroxides obtained by basification of solutions of the metal ions was compared to that of quartz. Both precipitates were obtained in the presence of the substrates.

The aluminium precipitates had higher crystallinity, and thus led to smaller increases in specific surface area than those of iron, and were more effective modifiers of the surface electrical properties of the kaolin-oxide mixtures. At concentrations as low as 0.43% Al (g/100 g of substrate) the point of zero charge (PZC) of the components with variable charge was measurable, while Fe required 2.23% and gave lower PZCs than those of corresponding concentrations of Al. In both cases the PZCs shifted to higher pH as metal concentration was increased, as did the flocculation interval of colloidal suspensions of kaolin, which were close to the PZCs (where these were evaluated).

The Al and Fe oxides precipitated on quartz had higher crystallinities. Both metals increased the specific surface area to a similar extent, with an almost linear relationship to metal concentration. Samples containing ca. 6.5% Fe or Al had similar or slightly higher PZCs than corresponding kaolin samples.

The results were interpreted by assuming, in the case of kaolin, the union of the metal precipitate with the basal faces of the substrate, so decreasing the negative charge at this surface; and in the case of quartz, the formation of a hydroxide coating that neutralizes the negative charge on the silica surface. The difference between the results obtained for each metal was attributed to the different morphologies of their oxide precipitates.

Although phosphate sorption by goethite and other less-abundant Fe oxides strongly influences the concentration of this anion in the soil solution and aquatic environments, relatively little is known on the P-sorption characteristics of natural goethites. For this reason, we examined the P-sorption capacity and time course of P sorption of 10 goethite-rich soil, ferricrete and lake ore samples, in which the content and nature of mineral impurities were unlikely to affect P sorption significantly. Phosphate sorption could be adequately described by a modified Freundlich equation including a time term. The amount of P sorbed after 1 day of equilibration at a concentration of 1 mg P/liter ranged widely (0.36–2.04 /μmol P/m2). The total P sorbed after 75 days of equilibration varied less, in relative terms (1.62–3.18 μmol P/m2), i.e., a higher slow sorption tended to compensate for a lower initial (fast) sorption. Total sorbed P (X̄ = 2.62, SD = 0.52 μmol P/m2) was similar to the sorption capacity of synthetic goethites, suggesting a common sorption mechanism and the predominance of one type of crystal face, which, according to previous transmission electron microscope observations, might be the (110).

The extent of the slow reaction correlated to the ratio between micropore surface area and total surface area, as well as to oxalate-extractable Fe, which is an estimation of the ferrihydrite content. Ferrihydrite impurities might affect the slow reaction by contributing to the microporosity of some samples. Silicate adsorbed on the surface of the goethites was readily desorbed during phosphate sorption and did not significantly affect the extent of the slow sorption process.

We measured the visible to near-infrared (IR) spectra of 176 synthetic and natural samples of Fe oxides, oxyhydroxides and an oxyhydroxysulfate (here collectively called “Fe oxides”), and of 56 soil samples ranging widely in goethite/hematite and goethite/lepidocrocite ratios. The positions of the second-derivative minima, corresponding to crystal-field bands, varied substantially within each group of the Fe oxide minerals. Because of overlapping band positions, goethite, maghemite and schwertmannite could not be discriminated. Using the positions of the 4T1←6A1, 4T2←6A1, (4E;4A1)←6A1 and the electron pair transition (4T1+4T1)←(6A1+6A1), at least 80% of the pure akaganeite, feroxyhite, ferrihydrite, hematite and lepidocrocite samples could be correctly classified by discriminant functions. In soils containing mixtures of Fe oxides, however, only hematite and magnetite could be unequivocally discriminated from other Fe oxides. The characteristic features of hematite are the lower wavelengths of the 4T1 transition (848–906 nm) and the higher wavelengths of the electron pair transition (521–565 nm) as compared to the other Fe oxides (909–1022 nm and 479–499 nm, resp.). Magnetite could be identified by a unique band at 1500 nm due to Fe(II) to Fe(III) intervalence charge transfer. As the bands of goethite and hematite are well separated, the goethite/hematite ratio of soils not containing other Fe oxides could be reasonably predicted from the amplitude of the second-derivative bands. The detection limit of these 2 minerals in soils was below 5 g kg−1, which is about 1 order of magnitude lower than the detection limit for routine X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. This low detection limit, and the little time and effort involved in the measurements, make second-derivative diffuse reflectance spectroscopy a practical means of routinely determining goethite and hematite contents in soils. The identification of other accessory Fe oxide minerals in soils is, however, very restricted.

Among all iron oxides, hematite (α-Fe2O3), goethite (α-FeOOH), and ferrihydrite (FeOOH⋅nH2O) are the most common mineral species. While immobilization of Mo6+ by surface adsorption on ferric oxides has been studied extensively, the mechanisms of incorporation in their structure have been researched little. The objective of this study was to investigate the relation between Mo content and its structural incorporation in hematite, goethite, and six-line ferrihydrite by a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), and inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Synthesized in the presence of Mo, the hematite, goethite, and six-line ferrihydrite phases incorporated up to 8.52, 0.03, and 17.49 wt. % Mo, respectively. For hematite and goethite, pXRD analyses did not indicate the presence of separate Mo phases. Refined unit-cell parameters correlated with increasing Mo concentration in hematite and goethite. The unit-cell parameters indicated an increase in structural disorder within both phases and, therefore, supported the structural incorporation of Mo in hematite and goethite. Analysis of pXRD measurements of Mo-bearing six-line ferrihydrites revealed small amounts of coprecipitated akaganéite. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements at the Mo L3-edge indicated a strong distortion of the MoO6 octahedra in all three phases. Fitting of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of the Mo K-edge supported the presence of such distorted octahedra in a coordination environment similar to the Fe position in the investigated specimen. Incorporation of Mo6+ at the Fe3+-position for both hematite and goethite resulted in the formation of one Fe vacancy in close proximity to the newly incorporated Mo6+ and, therefore, charge balance within the hematite and goethite structures.

Clays are used widely as facial masks to remove excess sebum, an oily substance released onto the skin. Smectite, illite, kaolinite, and in some cases, chlorite, are the dominant phyllosilicates in most commonly used clay facial masks. To date, the adsorption of human sebum has been proved only on smectite clays; in the present study the adsorption of two organic compounds found in human sebum by illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic phyllosilicates was investigated. Illitic clays are often used in cosmetic clay masks, but usually contain some fine-grained non-clay minerals. The presence of carbonate, for example, can cause skin irritation because of its alkaline nature, and iron oxides and hydroxides reduce the adsorption properties of clays. The influence of the removal of these compounds on the adsorption properties of illitic clays was also investigated. The amounts of both compounds adsorbed were established by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. All samples were characterized by mineralogical composition, particlesize distribution, specific surface area, and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Oleic acid and squalene were adsorbed on all clay samples, but illitic and chloritic phyllosilicates showed the greatest adsorption capacity. After purification, the sizes of the particles decreased and the CEC values increased. Nevertheless, the dissolution of carbonates essentially had no influence on the adsorption properties, whereas the removal of iron oxides and hydroxides increased significantly the amounts adsorbed of both oleic acid and squalene.

Iron oxides, typical constituents of many soils, represent a natural immobilization mechanism for toxic elements. Most iron oxides are formed during the transformation of poorly crystalline ferrihydrite to more crystalline iron phases. The present study examined the impact of well known contaminants, such as P(V), As(V), and Sb(V), on the ferrihydrite transformation and investigated the transformation products with a set of bulk and nano-resolution methods. Irrespective of the pH, P(V) and As(V) favor the formation of hematite (α-Fe2O3) over goethite (α-FeOOH) and retard these transformations at high concentrations. Sb(V), on the other hand, favors the formation of goethite, feroxyhyte (d’-FeOOH), and tripuhyite (FeSbO4) depending on pH and Sb(V) concentration. The elemental composition of the transformation products analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy show high loadings of Sb(V) with molar Sb:Fe ratios of 0.12, whereas the molar P:Fe and As:Fe ratios do not exceed 0.03 and 0.06, respectively. The structural similarity of feroxyhyte and hematite was resolved by detailed electron diffraction studies, and feroxyhyte was positively identified in a number of the samples examined. These results indicate that, compared to P(V) and As(V), Sb(V) can be incorporated into the structure of certain iron oxides through Fe(III)-Sb(V) substitution, coupled with other substitutions. However, the outcome of the ferrihydrite transformation (hematite, goethite, feroxyhyte, or tripuhyite) depends on the Sb(V) concentration, pH, and temperature.

Among the several steps involved in molecular evolution, molecular preconcentration is the first and most important. If the molecules are not preconcentrated the other steps of molecular evolution cannot occur. There are several ways to preconcentrate molecules: sorption, wetting/drying cycles, freezing/sublimation and sorption/precipitation with minerals. In the present work, the effect of NH4SCN and artificial seawater 4.0 Gy on the synthesis of ferrihydrite was studied. It should be noted that thiocyanate could play the same role as that of CN− in the Strecker reaction. Unlike today's seawater that has high Na+ and Cl− concentrations, the seawater used in this work has high Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO42− concentrations. Two results stand out, first SCN− and NH4+ were preconcentrated by sorption/precipitation in some syntheses and second, in some experiments, a mixture of goethite, hematite and magnetite was obtained. The sorption/precipitation of SCN− is always associated with the synthesis of goethite. This could be an indication that SCN− interacts with Fe3+ through the sulphur group of SCN−. In addition, the synthesis of magnetite could be an indication that the SCN− ion oxidized, forming thiocyanogen-(SCN)2 or trithiocyanate ion-(SCN)−3 and that Fe3+ reduced to Fe2+. Besides the sorption/precipitation of SCN− and NH4+, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy also showed that sorption/precipitation of SO42− and CO32− occurred. Ferrihydrite synthesized with artificial seawater presented the highest surface area and pore size. The pHpzc values of the samples were in the range of pHpzc described in the literature. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements performed show proportions of iron present in different oxidation states, however, the electronic similarities observed in the mixtures of iron oxides and oxy-hydroxides make it difficult to quantify them. Direct comparison between XPS spectra of the Fe2p and O 1s core-levels reveal no significant differences from the effect of artificial seawater 4.0 Gy on the synthesis of ferrihydrite.
