We have carried out a detailed investigation of eclipsing binary star NT Aps using high cadence photometric observations from the TESS satellite and time-series spectra from EFOSC2 at ESO’s New Technology Telescope.a We have, for the first time, determined precise system parameters for this W UMa-type late-type contact binary. Our analysis indicates that the system is composed of two solar-like stars with mass ratio of $q=0.31$ and orbital period of 0.29475540 $\pm$ 0.00000035 days. These values are typical for common envelope contact binaries. However, the system does not exhibit strong magnetic activity in the form of frequent flaring and large starspots, even if large flare rates have been earlier predicted for this system. This lack of strong magnetic activity further strengthens the earlier indications that the contact binaries are less magnetically active than those of detached chromospherically active binaries with similar parameters.

We present results regarding the longitudinal migrations of cool stellar spots that exhibit remarkable oscillations and explore their possible causes. We conducted analyses using high-quality data from nine target systems of various spectral types, spanning from F to M, which were observed by the Kepler Satellite. The systems in which the behaviour of the spots was examined are as follows: KIC 4357272, KIC 6025466, KIC 6058875, KIC 6962018, KIC 7798259, KIC 9210828, KIC 11706658, KIC 12599700, and KIC 8669092. Basic stellar parameters were calculated from light curve analysis using the PHOEBE V.0.32 software, and light curves were modelled to obtain sinusoidal variations occurring out-of-eclipses phases, induced by rotational modulation. Subsequently, we calculated the minimum times of the obtained sinusoidal variations using the Fourier transform. The distributions of ${\theta}_{\min}$ corresponding to these minimum times over time were computed using linear fits to determine the longitudinal migrations of the spotted areas. We then compared the longitudinal migration periods with the stellar parameters found in the literature. In addition, we also found a secondary variation in the spot migrations apart from the linear models. Our results revealed that the longitudinal migration periods vary in relation to the $B-V$ colour index of the stars.

In this contribution, I present a selected overview of optical interferometry imaging results that brought insights on stellar activity and mass loss in evolved stars. I briefly introduce the STELLIM project that aims to characterize stellar surfaces and circumstellar environments by producing fast and reliable interferometric images.

Our knowledge of stellar evolution relies on constraints provided by measurements of the physical stellar properties such as the mass, effective temperature, and radii. The most fundamental parameter, the stellar mass, is rarely available or has a low accuracy, providing poor constraints on the stellar structure and evolution. Observing binary stars combining astrometry and spectroscopy offers the unique opportunity to measure very precise masses. In addition, double-lined spectroscopic binaries provide independent distance measurements with an extreme accuracy, allowing to test the Gaia parallaxes and the period-luminosity (P-L) relations. I will show that masses and distances with an accuracy level as high as 0.05% can be obtained by combining interferometric and spectroscopic observations for different types of binary systems, i.e. binary Cepheids, eclipsing and non-eclipsing binaries.

The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey that has collected spectra of about 100,000 stars. The survey provides not only the reduced spectra, but also the radial velocities, stellar parameters and surface abundances resulting from the analysis of the spectra. We present the work of the groups that analysed the spectra of the hottest stars in that Survey. The large temperature range that is covered (Teff = 7,000 to 50,000 K) requires the use of different analysis codes by the different groups. Eight groups each analysed part of the data, with significant overlap that allowed cross-checks. In total 17,693 spectra of 6,462 stars were analysed, most of them in 37 open star clusters. The homogenisation of all this information led to stellar parameters for 5,584 stars. Abundances for at least one of the elements He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si and Sc were determined for 292 stars. The GES hot star data, as well as the Survey data in general, will be of considerable use in future studies of stellar evolution and open clusters.

An overview is provided of the scientific goals of the Magellanic Cloud component of the STScI Directors Discretionary UV initiative ULLYSES, together with the complementary spectroscopic survey XShootU (VLT/Xshooter) and other ancillary datasets. Together, ULLYSES and XShootU permit the first comprehensive, homogeneous study of wind densities and velocities in metal-poor massive stars, plus UV/optical spectroscopic libraries for population synthesis models and a large number of interstellar sight-lines towards the Magellanic Clouds.

In addition to being spectacular objects, very massive stars (VMS) are suspected to have a tremendous impact on their environment and on the whole cosmic evolution. The nucleosynthesis both during their advanced stages and their final explosion likely contribute greatly to the overall enrichment of the Universe. Their resulting Supernovae are candidates for the most superluminous events and their extreme conditions lead also to very important radiative and mechanical feedback effects, from local to cosmic scale. With the recent implementation of a new equation of state in the GENEC stellar evolution code, appropriate for describing the conditions in the central regions of very massive stars in the advanced phases, we present new results on VMS evolution from Population III to solar metallicity. We explore their evolution and final fate as potential (P)PISNe across the cosmic time. We compare our results to recent spectroscopic observations of VMS in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We also underline the important radiative feedback of Population III VMS during the reionization epoch and the chemical contribution of these stars at high metallicity, especially for short-lived radionuclei.

The aim of this survey is the homogeneous characterization of a large sample of H ii regions with active star formation in order to detect observational trends supporting the two main models of massive star formation.

We use the MIDE3700 code to find effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g) via the Barbier Chalonge Divan (BCD) method for 222 B-type stars in the ESO archive in preparation for their inclusion as an extension to the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL). We find agreement of Δ log Teff ∼0.1σ and Δ log g ∼0.25σ of our results with a sample of literature stars. We populate a previously bare region of the XSL Kiel diagram in the ranges 9000 ≤ Teff ≤ 23000 K and 2.8 ≤ log g ≤ 4.0 dex, and thereby extend the lower age limit of XSL stellar population models by up to a factor ∼10 at [Fe/H] = −1.2 dex, and by a factor ∼2 at Solar metallicity.

Low metallicity (Z) massive stars are among the main feedback agents in the early Universe and in present-day blue dwarf galaxies. The nearby star-forming SMC galaxy offers conditions which resemble those at redshift z∼2 i.e. where modern galaxies formed and star formation peaked. Here we present the recent results about the nature of the eclipsing O-type binary in the SMC, AzV 476, to gain insights on the properties of massive stars and binaries at earlier cosmic epochs. We find that the primary has surprisingly low mass while being much brighter and hotter than the secondary. To place the measured stellar properties in the evolutionary context we modeled the system and confirm that AzV 476 is a post-interaction binary with the primary already being core helium (He) burning, while still having a hydrogen-rich (H-rich) envelope. These results constrain massive binary evolutionary scenarios and guide the searches of stripped stars in low-Z environments.

The temperature independent part of the Humphreys-Davidson (HD) limit sets the boundary for evolutionary channels of massive stars that either end their lives as red supergiants (RSGs) or as the hotter blue supergiants (BSGs) and Wolf-Rayet stars. Recent downward revision of most luminous RSGs the Galaxy below log(L / L⊙) ≈ 5.5, more in line with the Magellanic Clouds, might hint towards a metallicity (Z)-independent HD limit. We present MESA single star models in the 15-40 M⊙ range and study the different Z-dependent processes that could potentially affect the location of the upper luminosity limit of RSGs.

Upcoming large-scale spectroscopic surveys such as WEAVE and 4MOST will provide thousands of spectra of massive stars, which need to be analysed in an efficient and homogeneous way. Studies on massive stars are usually based on samples of a few hundred objects which pushes current spectroscopic analysis tools to their limits because visual inspection is necessary to verify the spectroscopic fit.

The novel spectroscopic analysis pipeline takes advantage of the statistics that large samples provide, and determines the model error to account for imperfections in stellar atmosphere codes due to simplified, wrong or missing physics. Considering observational plus model uncertainties improve spectroscopic fits. The pipeline utilises the entire spectrum rather than selected diagnostic lines allowing a wider range of temperature from B to early O stars to be analysed. A small fraction of stars like peculiar, contaminated or spectroscopic binaries require visual inspection, which are identified through their larger uncertainties.

We present in-progress resolution test and parameter space studies for very massive stars using MESA, showcasing current MESA version convergence studies.

Whether it be due to rapid rotation or binary interactions, deviations from spherical symmetry are common in massive stars. These deviations from spherical symmetry are known to cause non-uniform distributions of various parameters across the surface including temperature, which can drive internal mixing processes within the envelopes of these massive stars. Despite how common these 3D distortions are, they are often neglected in spectroscopic analyses. We present a new spectral analysis code called spamms (Spectroscopic PAtch Model for Massive Stars) specifically designed to analyze non-spherical systems. We discuss how the code works and discuss its assumptions. Furthermore, we demonstrate how spamms can be applied to a variety of different types of systems and we show how it can model 3D effects in a way that current analysis techniques are not able to.

Especially in the upper Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, where stellar physics is least understood, obtaining model independent masses is of great value. Spectroscopic binaries that are also resolved astrometrically are an excellent alternative to eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binaries where dynamical masses can be measured. 9 Sgr is such a massive binary. However, its characterization is troubled by conflicting conclusions from the spectroscopic analysis on the one hand and the interferometric one on the other hand. In this work, we attempt to resolve this tension by applying a novel approach to spectral disentangling of the spectroscopic data to constrain better the mass of 9 Sgr.

We present the results obtained using spectroscopic data taken with the intermediate-resolution Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) of B and A-type supergiants and bright giants in the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300. For our analysis, a hybrid local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) line-blanketing+non-LTE method was used to improve the previously published results for the same data. In addition, we present some further applications of this work, which includes extending the flux-weighted gravity luminosity relationship (FGLR), a distance determination method for supergiants. This pioneering work opens up a new window to explore this relation, and also demonstrates the enormous potential of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) for extragalactic quantitative stellar studies.

The empirical upper limit to Red Supergiant (RSG) luminosity, known as the Humphreys-Davidson (HD) limit, has been commonly explained as being caused by the stripping of stellar envelopes by metallicity-dependent, line-driven winds. As such, the theoretical expectation is that the HD limit should be higher at lower metallicity, where weaker mass-loss rates mean that higher initial masses are required for an envelope to be stripped. In this work, we test this prediction by measuring the luminosity function of RSGs in M31 and comparing to those in the LMC and SMC. We find that $\[\log ({L_{{\rm{m}}ax}}/{L_ \odot }) = 5.53 \pm 0.03\]$ in M31 (Z ≳ Z⊙), consistent with the limit found for both the LMC (Z ∼ 0.5 Z⊙) and SMC (Z ∼ 0.25 Z⊙), while the RSG luminosity distributions in these 3 galaxies are consistent to within 1σ. We therefore find no evidence for a metallicity dependence on both the HD limit and the RSG luminosity function, and conclude that line-driven winds on the main sequence are not the cause of the HD limit.

In 2020, HR 6819 was reported to be a triple system containing the closest black hole to Earth. However, these results were contested, with an alternative explanation of a post-interaction binary suggested. Using new integral field spectroscopic and interferometric data, we have been able to determine the true nature of this exotic source.

When a star is rapidly rotating, it deviates from spherical symmetry causing non-uniform distributions of the surface gravity and temperature across the surface. These three-dimensional effects lead to an inclination dependence of many observable spectroscopic parameters, however this is often neglected when analyzing rapidly rotating systems. Using spamms, we generate synthetic spectra that account for the 3D geometry of the system and fit them with 1D models to investigate how much the 3D effects can change the derived stellar parameters. We show that these 3D effects can lead to observed temperature differences of thousands of kelvin for the same star viewed at different inclinations, and a systematic underestimation of the helium abundance.

During the last years we have carried out different studies in the Cygnus OB2 association based on new spectroscopic data and benefiting from the unprecedented Gaia astrometry. They include membership, chemical and structure studies, that allowed us to discern for the first time ever between two stellar groups separated by several hundred parsecs within the association and find at least two star-forming bursts at ∼3 and ∼5 Myr. Using these studies as a template and combining upcoming spectroscopic WEAVE data and the expected accuracy that Gaia will reach in the Cygnus-X area (DR3 and forthcoming releases), we will be able to perform the deepest multi-dimensional study ever done before in a massive star-forming complex. The results of this project will lead to an important improvement of our knowledge of star formation and evolution of star-forming regions and clusters, including our understanding of the dynamics and kinematics of OB associations and stellar groups.
