For a fixed infinite graph $H$, we study the largest density of a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$ that can be found in every two-colouring of the edges of $K_{\mathbb{N}}$. This is called the Ramsey upper density of $H$ and was introduced by Erdős and Galvin in a restricted setting, and by DeBiasio and McKenney in general. Recently [4], the Ramsey upper density of the infinite path was determined. Here, we find the value of this density for all locally finite graphs $H$ up to a factor of 2, answering a question of DeBiasio and McKenney. We also find the exact density for a wide class of bipartite graphs, including all locally finite forests. Our approach relates this problem to the solution of an optimisation problem for continuous functions. We show that, under certain conditions, the density depends only on the chromatic number of $H$, the number of components of $H$ and the expansion ratio $|N(I)|/|I|$ of the independent sets of $H$.

We use tools from free probability to study the spectra of Hermitian operators on infinite graphs. Special attention is devoted to universal covering trees of finite graphs. For operators on these graphs, we derive a new variational formula for the spectral radius and provide new proofs of results due to Sunada and Aomoto using free probability.

With the goal of extending the applicability of free probability techniques beyond universal covering trees, we introduce a new combinatorial product operation on graphs and show that, in the noncommutative probability context, it corresponds to the notion of freeness with amalgamation. We show that Cayley graphs of amalgamated free products of groups, as well as universal covering trees, can be constructed using our graph product.

We make comments on some problems Erdős and Hajnal posed in their famous problem list. Let X be a graph on $\omega _1$ with the property that every uncountable set A of vertices contains a finite set s such that each element of $A-s$ is joined to one of the elements of s. Does then X contain an uncountable clique? (Problem 69) We prove that both the statement and its negation are consistent. Do there exist circuitfree graphs $\{X_n:n<\omega \}$ on $\omega _1$ such that if $A\in [\omega _1]^{\aleph _1}$ , then $\{n<\omega :X_n\cap [A]^2=\emptyset \}$ is finite? (Problem 61) We show that the answer is yes under CH, and no under Martin’s axiom. Does there exist $F:[\omega _1]^2\to 3$ with all three colors appearing in every uncountable set, and with no triangle of three colors. (Problem 68) We give a different proof of Todorcevic’ theorem that the existence of a $\kappa $ -Suslin tree gives $F:[\kappa ]^2\to \kappa $ establishing $\kappa \not \to [\kappa ]^2_{\kappa }$ with no three-colored triangles. This statement in turn implies the existence of a $\kappa $ -Aronszajn tree.

New compact representations of infinite graphs are investigated. Finite automata are used to represent labelled hyper-graphs which can be also multi-graphs. Our approach consists of a general framework where vertices are represented by a regular prefix-free language and edges are represented by a regular language and a function over tuples. We consider three different functions over tuples: given a tuple the first function returns its first difference, the second one returns its suffix and the last one returns its infixes. The first-difference function is substantially a direct generalization to infinite multi-hyper-graphs of the representation introduced by Ehrenfeucht et al. for finite graphs. This representation, though very interesting for finite graphs, turns out to be quite unsatisfactory for infinite graphs. The other two functions we consider while preserving some interesting features of their representation also achieves a high expressive power. As a matter of fact, our formalism either with the suffix or infix function results to be more powerful than the equational graphs introduced by Courcelle and the simple graphs defined by Caucal. The monadic second order theories of these two classes of graphs are undecidable, but still many interesting graph properties are decidable. The use of a regular prefix-free language to represent the vertices allows (fixed the language of the edges) to express a graph by a labelled tree, moreover, the use of finite automata to represent the edges allows the verification of graph properties.
