In recent years, the importance of design has been pointed out as a source of competitive advantage. However, creating a great design also increases the risk of copy products being created. In this study, we used an approach based on visual information and conducted an international comparative judgment survey of elements considered to be similar within products.

This study conducts design-driven meaning innovation research based on an interpretation of new meaning through qualitative and quantitative research rooted in design practice and builds design-driven theories, methodology, and highly replicable methods. It presents a new design approach to design thinking called ‘design methodology and method of meaningful products’. The design process and framework integrate words, visuals, and functions to interpret and create new meanings. It highlights the importance of design semiotics in overcoming the limitations of traditional approaches.

In recent years, we have observed an increased interest within the field of design research in both the concept of conviviality and playful approaches as a pathway to co-design and participation. While play is often associated with freedom of expression and creativity, the implication of rules and mechanics in games poses questions regarding the tension between player agency and designed gameplay. This paper aims to provide reflection on these topics through a lens of ‘critical play’ and presents a model to explore games’ potential as convivial tools for imagining collective futures.

This paper introduces a method for analysing motion patterns that can be utilised to optimise data-driven systems. The aim is to use surveillance cameras and artificial intelligence to track multiple objects in a reliable manner, thereby preserving the authenticity of movement patterns for numerous and similar objects. In a case study, this method is applied to optimize lighting conditions in animal husbandry. Furthermore, this approach can be utilized not only in animal husbandry but also in other domains.

In HMLV manufacturing, assembly mistakes by operators are common due to the ever increasing product variability and complexity. If mistakes can be detected early-on in the design process, product designers can reduce the possibility for mistakes. We present an algorithm to automatically detect and evaluate potential misplacements of parts that need to be fastened. Evaluation starts from a product CAD and returns the risk of misplacement as well as visual feedback on possible misplacements. An implementation with FreeCAD of our algorithm is illustrated on different use cases.

Electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) have been accessed on various configurations over the past decade. This literature review deals with the issue of determining the appropriate design for an Autonomous Passenger Drone (APD). APDs have been compared with VTOLs on their pros and cons. The authors analysed aerodynamics and propulsion systems of multiple APDs. Further, the comparative analysis aids in designing the best framework for the exterior form of APDs based on human capacity, flying technology, fuel type, travel distance, door type, size, material, safety, cost, etc.

Sustainable product engineering is becoming increasingly important. This includes the development of environmentally friendly products and the design for recycling. In this paper a holistic method for the assessment of solution alternatives is presented, in which the stakeholder perspectives along the generic product lifecycle are taken into account. Finally, a new visualization is presented. By visualizing the results in the integrated sustainability triangle, decision-makers in product development can holistically assess the sustainability of the solution alternatives.

The act of prototyping is a key element of the design process. However, capturing information on how prototypes evolve and influence one another is a complex problem. This paper presents an iterative evolution to a prototyping capture platform, termed Pro2Booth, designed to address the shortcomings encountered in previous systems. The Pro2Booth hardware and online software described in this paper provide a new baseline for future innovation and exploration of the prototype capture process.

The design of an active seat suspension for a mid-class passenger vehicle based on the given set of requirements is considered a combination of four subsystems; the carrier, the actuator, the spring, and the damper. The design of the former two is considered through the 10 and 16 concepts for each, respectively. Two overall designs are proposed for further development. One based on a dual Scott-Russell mechanism and one based on Sarrus mechanism. The first one is evaluated to have high stiffness, the second to be more cost-effective. The detailed design of the first concept is presented.

It is important to be able to compare and evaluate different solutions early in development. This paper proposes a method for structuring historical data into a data model that can support the evaluation of new design concepts. The data is contextualized by linking it to a hierarchical decomposition of existing products. Two case studies were conducted to evaluate the value of using historical data when evaluating new concepts. The cases confirm that the proposed method is useful for evaluation of new concepts.

Software engineering plays a key role in state-of-the-art robotics where more effective and efficient software development solutions are needed for implementation and integration of advanced robotics capabilities. Component-based software engineering and model-driven software development are two paradigms suitable to deal with such challenges. This paper presents the analysis, design, and implementation of control software for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The software development stages are carried out by using a model-driven toolchain that provides support to design and build component-based software for robotics applications. A case study of a high-performance AUV control application and experimental results from a software schedulability analysis are presented.
