The symbiotic relationship between the syllid polychaete, Haplosyllides floridana Augener, 1922, and the barrel-shaped sponge Xestospongia muta (Schmidt, 1870), originally documented solely in the Caribbean, is presumed to be species-specific. Recently, the host sponge has been found as a single species distributed across approximately 8000 km (from 26°N to 22°S). Herein we addressed new spatial and bathymetric population records of H. floridana to question the persistence of the association with X. muta, and whether, in the case of an association, the polychaete remains as a single species throughout this extensive distribution. Our findings change the restricted distribution of H. floridana, revealing a remarkable association with X. muta from Tropical north-western to south-western Atlantic including records in the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and the Almirante Saldanha Seamount, at 270 m deep. The populations analysed in this study are morphologically consistent. The study underscores the need for further investigations into the connectivity of Xestospongia species, the presence of Haplosyllides in other ocean basins, and the shared evolutionary history between Xestospongia and Haplosyllides. The observed life cycle completion of H. floridana within the host sponge suggests a potential co-evolutionary relationship, offering insights into the intricate dynamics of symbiotic associations in marine ecosystems.

Ficopomatus Southern, 1921 is a serpulid genus currently composed of six species, two of which (F. enigmaticus and F. miamiensis) are reef-builders. The former has invaded subtropical and warm-temperate estuaries worldwide, causing environmental and economic harm. In this study, Ficopomatus miamiensis and F. uschakovi are reported from brackish-water coastal localities in both Atlantic and Pacific sides of Mexico, including a Biosphere Reserve, estuaries, as well as shrimp and oyster farms. Ficopomatus miamiensis is reported from Veracruz (southern Gulf of Mexico, Mexico territory) and Sinaloa (southern Gulf of California). Ficopomatus uschakovi is reported for the first time in the southern Gulf of Mexico (Mexico territory) and repeatedly recorded in Chiapas (southern Mexican Pacific). There are no phenotypic differences between specimens of F. miamiensis from both coasts of Mexico. Comparison of mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) DNA sequences further support the notion that F. miamiensis from the type locality (Florida) and Atlantic coasts of Mexico is also found along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Morphological variability within specimens of F. uschakovi from a single locality (either Laguna del Ostión or La Encrucijada) in Mexico suggest potential presence of multiple cryptic species. Molecular genetics studies are needed to confirm the taxonomic and invasive status of F. uschakovi.

Sipunculans are non-segmented marine worms with an anterior retractable introvert, which are commonly included in Annelida based on molecular phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses. They generally burrow in the soft sediments or live inside the crevices of hard substrata (e.g. calcareous/coralline rocks). However, members of some sipunculan genera (mainly Phascolion and Aspidosiphon) are known to have a peculiar habit of dwelling in vacant shells of gastropods or scaphopods. In this study, we investigated the shell utilization and preference pattern of the species of Phascolion and Aspidosiphon in Japan. We collected 302 sipunculans, comprising 273 and 29 individuals in Phascolion and Aspidosiphon, respectively, from 57–800 m depth of three study sites in the Pacific coast of Honshu Island, Japan. The species of Phascolion were found in vacant shells of 38 genera of 27 families of gastropods and six genera of four families of scaphopods, whereas the species of Aspidosiphon were found in 11 genera of 11 families of gastropods and one genus of scaphopod. These results suggest that members of each genus use a wide range of gastropod and scaphopod shells. The body size of the sipunculans was positively correlated with the shell size, suggesting that they change the shells as they grow. Furthermore, we investigated the shell preference of Phascolion species by comparing morphological characteristics of shells occupied and unoccupied by sipunculans. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analyses suggest that the species of Phascolion tend to use long and narrow shells. Such shells likely fit well the elongated trunk of sipunculans.

The present study reports polychaetes that bore into limestone rocks along the east coast of the Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean). Rock materials were collected at two depth intervals (0–5 and 5–10 m) at 15 stations in four localities of Ildırı Bay. A total of 276 specimens belonging to 12 species and four families (Eunicidae, Spionidae, Cirratulidae and Sabellidae) were recorded. Specimens belonging to Dodecaceria and Pseudopotamilla were identified at the genus level, because they differ from described species, were few in number or were in poor condition. Dipolydora giardia is a new species to the marine fauna of Turkey. The most dominant and frequent family in the area was Eunicidae, followed by Spionidae. Lysidice ninetta and L. margaritacea comprised 59% of the total number of individuals. The number of species and individuals, and the diversity index did not change with regard to depth or locality. Two species assemblages were found in the area, mainly formed by Dipolydora and Lysidice species. The Lessepsian species, Palola valida, which is a new record for the Aegean Sea, occurred abundantly at the study sites, posing a risk of damage to limestone rocks in the Mediterranean Sea. The morphological features of the species identified at the generic level and the burrow structure of these species are presented. The burrow shapes of Palola siciliensis and P. valida were described for the first time in the present study; they constructed complicated galleries, including more than four entrances.

Early development of the polychaetes Capitella sp. TF from Tampa, Florida and Capitella sp. TV from Tamiahua Lagoon, Veracruz was studied under laboratory conditions. Our observations indicate that hermaphrodites occur in Capitella sp. TF, but not in Capitella sp. TV. Length and volume of larvae and early juveniles were measured daily. Both species appear to have lecithotrophic development. Sizes and duration of the developmental stages varied widely, as in most known species of Capitella. Characteristic features of Capitella sp. TF include very small hermaphrodites with a distinct dorsal pigmentation pattern and characteristically shaped brood tubes with a centrally thickened region. Embryos forced to abandon the brood did not survive more than 3 days, and handling the brood produced alterations in timing. Ciliated metatrochophores from Capitella sp. TV survived inside the brood without the female for at least 14 days and some larvae hatched and died during settling. Some of these larvae were abnormal, with two rounded protuberances in the two ends. Mortality was high. Fungi and protozoans appeared in the dishes and probably partially induced the production of thicker mucus in the brood tubes, delay in metamorphosis, juvenile mortality, worm length and failure in coupling. Size and duration of the developmental stages were distinctly different from the other putative lecithotrophic species of the complex. These differences and other characteristics of each species discard the possibility that they belong to a previously described species. Our results are applicable to future ecological, morphological and molecular studies of each species, habitat and phylogenetics.

Spatial variations of polychaetes along the Baja California Peninsula continental shelf were analysed in two ways: (1) by evaluating the species richness and defining the faunal assemblages from local sampling, and (2) by characterizing the latitudinal variation of beta-diversity based on the distribution of all polychaetes reported up to now. Twenty-seven stations from three oceanographic expeditions were sampled, and 2858 individuals from 38 families and 231 species were identified. Polychaetes were abundant (mean = 37.5 ind 0.1 m−2) and diversified (mean = 15 species station−1). Differences in species composition defined seven faunal assemblages, but their number of species did not show significant latitudinal changes. The beta-diversity analysis was based on distribution data of 730 species from 47 families. The presence of a group of islands in the middle Gulf could have a negative effect on the species distribution, since the lowest values of βT-diversity (0.39) were found in the northern Gulf, but their species were different from those recorded in the central region. The wide variation in βT-diversity (0.5–0.87) showed latitudinal changes in the species composition, mainly in the Gulf mouth (0.86–0.87), which indicated that the fauna inside the Gulf was different from that inhabiting the Pacific coasts. The ICE and Chao2 estimators showed that the polychaetes in the study area are relatively well known (>80%), and that most species (415) have small distribution ranges. The effects of these infrequent species were similar at each latitudinal band, which suggested that the observed βT-diversity pattern could represent a suitable estimation.

An increasing number of studies have forecast the potential responses of marine life to future climate change. This study predicts how the distributional range of temperate and tropical worm reefs (WRs) might respond to climate and environmental changes (CECs). Compared with current distributions, the tested hypotheses were: (i) under a low CO2 concentration and active atmospheric carbon capturing scenario (RCP2.6), both tropical and temperate WRs will maintain their current distributions and face only slight multi-directional biogeographic changes along the century; and (ii) under a high CO2 concentration scenario (RCP8.5) WRs will shift toward higher latitudes, with marked changes for tropical species and slight changes for temperate species, specifically at the end of the 21st century. The hypotheses were tested using species distribution modelling, and exploratory statistical analyses were performed to tune model settings. Under scenario RCP2.6, in the middle of the century, areas of suitable habitat are predicted to slightly increase for the temperate WRs and conversely contract for tropical WRs. At the end of the century, multi-directional shifts without range retraction were predicted for both species, but tropical WRs showed major changes in their distribution. Under scenario RCP8.5 and throughout the century, multi-directional shifts increased the areas of suitable habitat for temperate WRs, whereas tropical WRs experienced shifts toward high latitudes and significant retraction at low latitudes. Results indicate that biogeographic range shifts are idiosyncratic for temperate and tropical WRs depending on the CECs scenarios considered.

This paper is a first detailed contribution to the knowledge of serpulid diversity from marine caves of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. A total of 27 taxa were recorded in two submerged caves of Lesvos Island, in the Aegean Sea. A clear trend of variability was observed with serpulid abundance, specifically that of sciaphilic and deep-sea species, increasing inwards while the number of taxa and species diversity did not change significantly across the two caves. In the innermost sectors of the studied caves two types of bioconstructions were observed: (a) ‘coiled doughnuts’ of Protula, recorded for the first time in Mediterranean caves; and (b) ‘biostalactites’ mainly consisting of skeletal metazoans recorded for the first time from the eastern Mediterranean. The results of the present study revealed new faunal elements and type of bioconstructions for the Mediterranean marine caves, showing that several aspects of their communities are still poorly known and deserve to be further investigated.

The Mediterranean fan worm, Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin, 1791), is a highly invasive pest species introduced to Australia and New Zealand, with the ability to alter marine ecosystems by outcompeting native species for food and space. Sabella spallanzanii has been established in southern Australia for decades, but was discovered in Botany Bay (NSW, eastern Australia) in 2013. In New Zealand, S. spallanzanii was first detected in March 2008. Using cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences, we investigate the phylogeography of the Australian and New Zealand populations of S. spallanzanii, including the possible origins of the recent incursions in both countries. Australian and New Zealand S. spallanzanii show minimal genetic diversity (0.2% divergence) and were dominated by two main haplotypes suggesting a commonality. Our molecular data are insufficient by themselves to identify fine-scale invasion pathways in antipodean S. spallanzanii, but the similar, minimal haplotype diversity in combination with well-constrained field survey data suggests that the New Zealand incursion originated from southern Australia, rather than as a new incursion from the Mediterranean Sea. This highlights the importance of ongoing marine biosecurity surveillance and monitoring as well as improvements to biosecurity protocols for international and domestic vessels. The origin of the eastern Australian (Botany Bay) incursion is plausibly derived from either southern Australia or as a ‘return’ from New Zealand, and requires further, more detailed investigation.

Two new species of Cossura Webster & Benedict, 1887 were found in material collected during sampling from the terminal lobes of the Congo deep-sea fan. They were described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Cossura platypus sp. nov. has 15–17 thoracic chaetigers, a prostomium longer than it is wide, with a widely rounded anterior margin, an abruptly expanded posterior prostomial ring the same length as the peristomium, without a mid-ventral notch, a branchial filament attached to the midlength of chaetiger 3, and a pygidium with three anal cirri. Cossura platypus sp. nov. is similar to C. brunnea Fauchald, 1972 but differs in the shape of the prostomium, which is widely rounded anteriorly in C. platypus sp. nov. and is broadly triangular in C. brunnea; furthermore, C. platypus sp. nov.is uniformly pale, whereas C. brunnea has dark pigmentation. Cossura candida Hartman, 1955 differs from C. platypus sp. nov. in the conical shape of the prostomium and 24–35 thoracic chaetigers. Cossura flabelligera sp. nov. has 16–19 thoracic chaetigers, a conical prostomium, and a branchial filament arising from the posterior part of chaetiger 2; the entire body, including the chaetae, is covered by a thick mucous sheath similar to the tunic of flabelligerids. Cossura flabelligera sp. nov. resembles C. longocirrata Webster & Benedict, 1887 in the position of the branchial filament, the shape of the prostomium, and the number of thoracic chaetigers; it differs in having a thick mucous sheath. This character seems to be unique for the Cossuridae.

We present some additional information to Acritagasyllis longichaetosus Lucas, San Martín & Sikorski 2010, the only representative of an enigmatic genus of Syllidae from subpolar areas off Norway, based on two newly found specimens and one male and another female stolons. The armature of the pharynx was incorrectly interpreted in the original description, having in fact a trepan instead of a single pharyngeal tooth as originally described. The reproductive stolons are herein described for the first time. With this new information we performed a maximum parsimony phylogenetic analysis that placed this genus within the subfamily Autolytinae, despite its peculiar morphological characteristics. For this reason, we propose a new diagnosis to the genus Acritagasyllis as well as a modified diagnosis of the subfamily Autolytinae.

A new species, Myrianida paredesi, and new records of Myrianida pentadentata (Imajima, 1966), and Procerarea micropedata (Hartmann-Schöder, 1962), are described from the central coast of Peru. Myrianida paredesi is characterized by the presence of an additional mid-dorsal, digitiform structure, quite similar to a dorsal cirrus (unique among all syllids), a subtriangular prostomium with a posterior region extended to middle peristomium, pharynx with a single elongated sinuation and a trepan with 14–15 equal teeth in a single ring. Descriptions of male and female stolons are also provided. The phylogenetic position of the new species within Myrianida is determined using molecular data, suggesting it is closely related to the species that share the presence of one ciliary troch per segment (except M. pachycera; unknown in M. australiensis), moderate number of equal teeth on trepan (except M. pachycera), and the mode of reproduction.

Descriptions of the collected specimens of Myrianida pentadentata (Imajima, 1966), and Proceraea micropedata (Hartmann-Schröder, 1962), both new reports to Peru, are also included.

This paper deals with a new species of Myrianida collected from Rhodes Island at 1 m depth among algae in April 2014. This new species is mainly characterized by having flattened dorsal cirri; high number of falcigers in parapodia; a trepan with 16 unequal teeth; and a brownish patch (in fixed specimen) on dorsum of each segment. Individuals are at the stage of reproduction, with developing stolons.

The genus Megasyllis is herein reorganized excluding the size from the diagnosis, since it is not a characteristic of all the species of the genus. We provide here a taxonomic account of all known species and a key to species identification. Seven species are new combinations, and re-descriptions of the four latter are included: Megasyllis nipponica (Imajima, 1966) and M. multiannulata (Aguado, San Martín & Nishi, 2008) from Japan; Megasyllis procera (Hartman, 1965) from the Atlantic; Megasyllis pseudoheterosetosa (Böggemann & Westheide, 2004) from the Indian Ocean. Megasyllis glandulosa (Augener, 1913), from Australia; Megasyllis marquesensis (Monro, 1939) from the Marquesas Islands, Micronesia and Megasyllis subantennata (Hartmann-Schröder, 1984) from Australia. Four new species from the Pacific Ocean namely Megasyllis tigrina sp. nov., Megasyllis mariandreworum sp. nov. (both from Australia), Megasyllis chrissyae sp. nov. (from the Philippines) and Megasyllis eduardoi sp. nov. (from New Zealand) are described.

The aim of this work was to study the dynamics of Alitta succinea population growth in a tropical estuary. The organisms were collected in the polyhaline area of Pina Basin, north-eastern Brazil, in lower and shallow subtidal consolidated substrates, from October 2009 to March 2011. Fifteen samples with a size of 0.01 m2 were collected every month. A total of 2064 A. succinea individuals were measured for growth analysis, and the measure used was the length from prostomium to the 25th setiger. Growth parameters were estimated by the frequency–length distribution data from three different functions (i.e. von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and Richards). The differences in the densities of A. succinea were significant between the months of the dry and the rainy season, with the rain pattern being the factor that most affects the A. succinea life cycle. According to Akaike information criteria, the von Bertalanffy and Gompertz models were the ones that presented the best fit with the growth curve of A. succinea for the studied period. Using the Bhattacharya method for the analysis of modal progression, we identified eight cohorts. The lowest recruitment values were found in July and August 2010, respectively, and the remaining months had numbers of recruits that were representative of the total population. The growth performance index (Ø′) found was 2.86. The maximum longevity indicates that specimens of A. succinea live between 586 and 953 d, and the instantaneous mortality rate (Z) is 1.53 yr−1.

Several poorly known species of the family Syllidae (Annelida) have been revised and re-described. New diagnosis and taxonomic remarks are provided for Erinaceusyllis erinaceus, Opisthosyllis neglecta comb. nov., Parapionosyllis parapionosylliformis comb. nov., Prosphaerosyllis semiverrucosa comb. nov. and Amblyosyllis granosa.

The new species Echinofabricia rousei is described for the Mediterranean Sea based on specimens collected along the Sardinia Coast (Porto Conte). The genus Echinofabricia is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean area. At present three species are described within the genus: E. goodhartzorum, described from the Caribbean, E. dubia, described from the East Pacific (Hawaii) and E. alata from Australia.

The coral reef inhabiting tubeworms from the Marshall Islands have been studied by few authors mainly by samplings in Enewetak Atoll. We report several new records of serpuline and spirorbine tubeworms from Enewetak Atoll as well as from Kwajalein, Utirik and Rongelap Atolls. Twenty-one species of Serpulinae and seven species of Spirorbinae are described and illustrated with line drawings, colour and/or scanning electron microscopy photographs. Neodexiospira turrita nom. nov. is proposed to replace Neodexiospira preacuta. Enewetak Atoll still represents the most species-rich atoll in the Marshall Islands but this is most likely the result of a greater sampling effort in this atoll for the last few decades.

Two species of North American branchiobdellidans, Cambarincola gracilis Robinson, 1954 and Cambarincola okadai Yamaguchi, 1933, have been reported in Europe for the first time. These branchiobdellidans together with Xirogoniton victoriensis Gelder and Hall, 1990 were found on signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana, 1852), collected from the Lot and Tarn River drainages in southern France. Specimens of X. victoriensis were also reported on the same host in the Mayenne River drainage in northeastern France. Brief morphological descriptions of the three alien branchiobdellidan species are given. These introductions are briefly discussed and compared with similar alien ectosymbiotic associations found in Japan.
