We study the classical Hermite–Hadamard inequality in the matrix setting. This leads to a number of interesting matrix inequalities such as the Schatten p-norm estimates

The purpose of this paper is twofold: we present some matrix inequalities of log-majorization type for eigenvalues indexed by a sequence; we then apply our main theorem to generalize and improve the Hua–Marcus’ inequalities. Our results are stronger and more general than the existing ones.

A tight frame is the orthogonal projection of some orthonormal basis of $\mathbb {R}^n$ onto $\mathbb {R}^k.$ We show that a set of vectors is a tight frame if and only if the set of all cross products of these vectors is a tight frame. We reformulate a range of problems on the volume of projections (or sections) of regular polytopes in terms of tight frames and write a first-order necessary condition for local extrema of these problems. As applications, we prove new results for the problem of maximization of the volume of zonotopes.

Inequalities on partial traces of positive semidefinite matrices are studied. Extensions of several existing inequalities on the determinant of partial traces are then obtained. Particularly, we improve a determinantal inequality given by Lin [Canad. Math. Bull. 59(2016)].

Associated with every $2n\times 2n$ real positive definite matrix $A,$ there exist n positive numbers called the symplectic eigenvalues of $A,$ and a basis of $\mathbb {R}^{2n}$ called the symplectic eigenbasis of A corresponding to these numbers. In this paper, we discuss differentiability and analyticity of the symplectic eigenvalues and corresponding symplectic eigenbasis and compute their derivatives. We then derive an analogue of Lidskii’s theorem for symplectic eigenvalues as an application.

If A is a real $2n \times 2n$ positive definite matrix, then there exists a symplectic matrix M such that $M^TAM=\text {diag}(D, D),$ where D is a positive diagonal matrix with diagonal entries $d_1(A)\leqslant \cdots \leqslant d_n(A).$ We prove a maxmin principle for $d_k(A)$ akin to the classical Courant–Fisher–Weyl principle for Hermitian eigenvalues and use it to derive an analogue of the Weyl inequality $d_{i+j-1}(A+B)\geqslant d_i(A)+d_j(B).$

Let $\mathbf{A}$ be a density matrix in ${{\mathbb{M}}_{m}}\,\otimes \,{{\mathbb{M}}_{n}}$. Audenaert [J. Math. Phys. 48(2007) 083507] proved an inequality for Schatten $p$-norms:

Some subadditivity inequalities for matrices and concave functions also hold for Hilbert space operators, but (unfortunately!) with an additional $\varepsilon $ term. It does not seem possible to erase this residual term. However, in case of compact operators we show that the $\varepsilon $ term is unnecessary. Further, these inequalities are strict in a certain sense when some natural assumptions are satisfied. The discussion also emphasizes matrices and their compressions and several open questions or conjectures are considered, both in the matrix and operator settings.

Trace inequalities for sums and products of matrices are presented. Relations between the given inequalities and earlier results are discussed. Among other inequalities, it is shown that if A and B are positive semidefinite matrices then for any positive integer k.

This paper is inspired by a counter example of J. Kurzweil published in [5], whose intention was to demonstrate that a certain property of linear operators on finite-dimensional spaces need not be preserved in infinite dimension. We obtain a stronger result, which says that no infinite-dimensional Banach space can have the given property. Along the way, we will also derive an interesting proposition related to Dvoretzky's theorem.

The tracial numerical range of operators on a 2-dimensional Krein space is investigated. Results in the vein of those obtained in the context of Hilbert spaces are obtained.

A well-known theorem states that if $f\left( z \right)$ generates a $\text{P}{{\text{F}}_{r}}$ sequence then $1/f\left( -z \right)$ generates a $\text{P}{{\text{F}}_{r}}$ sequence. We give two counterexamples which show that this is not true, and give a correct version of the theorem. In the infinite limit the result is sound: if $f\left( z \right)$ generates a $\text{PF}$ sequence then $1/f\left( -z \right)$ generates a $\text{PF}$ sequence.

We generalize the well-known result that a square traceless complex matrix is unitarily similar to a matrix with zero diagonal to arbitrary connected semisimple complex Lie groups $G$ and their Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ under the action of a maximal compact subgroup $K$ of $G$. We also introduce a natural partial order on $\mathfrak{g}:\,x\,\le y$ if $f(K\,\cdot \,x)\,\subseteq \,f(K\,\cdot \,y)$ for all $f\,\in \,{{\mathfrak{g}}^{*}}$, the complex dual of $\mathfrak{g}$. This partial order is $K$-invariant and induces a partial order on the orbit space $\mathfrak{g}/K$. We prove that, under some restrictions on $\mathfrak{g}$, the set $f(K\,\cdot \,x)$ is star-shaped with respect to the origin.

A homogeneous real polynomial $p$ is hyperbolic with respect to a given vector $d$ if the univariate polynomial $t\,\mapsto \,p(x\,-\,td)$ has all real roots for all vectors $x$. Motivated by partial differential equations, Gårding proved in 1951 that the largest such root is a convex function of $x$, and showed various ways of constructing new hyperbolic polynomials. We present a powerful new such construction, and use it to generalize Gårding’s result to arbitrary symmetric functions of the roots. Many classical and recent inequalities follow easily. We develop various convex-analytic tools for such symmetric functions, of interest in interior-point methods for optimization problems over related cones.

We present a series of conjectures for immanants, together with the supporting evidence we possess for them. The conjectures are loosely organized into three families. The first concerns inequalities involving the immanants of totally positive matrices (Le.,real matrices with nonnegative minors). This includes, for example, the conjecture that immanants of totally positive matrices are nonnegative. The second family involves the immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices. These conjectures were suggested by a previous conjecture of Goulden and Jackson (recently proved by C. Greene) that the immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices are polynomials with nonnegative coefficients. The third family involves geometric and combinatorial structures associated with total positivity and paths in acyclic digraphs.
