This paper shows that differences in fertility across European countries mainly emerge due to fewer women having two children in low-fertility countries. It further suggests that childcare services are an important determinant for the transition to a second child to occur. The theoretical framework we propose suggests that (i) in countries where childcare coverage is low, there is a U-shaped relationship between a couple’s probability of having a second child and the woman’s potential wage, whereas (ii) in countries with easy access to childcare, this probability is positively related with the woman’s potential wage. Data from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) confirm these implications when estimating a woman’s probability of having a second child as a function of education. This implies that middle-income women are the most affected ones by the lack of access to formal and subsidized childcare.

In this article we re-evaluate the hypothesis that the development of the financial sector was an essential factor behind economic growth in nineteenth-century Germany. We apply a structural VAR framework to a new annual data set from 1870 to 1912 that was initially compiled by Walther Hoffmann (1965). With respect to the literature, the distinguishing characteristic of our analysis is the focus on different sectors in the economy and the interpretation of the findings in the context of a two-sector growth model. We find that all sectors were affected significantly by shocks from the banking system. Interestingly, this link is the strongest in sectors with small or non-tradable-goods-producing firms, such as construction, services, transportation and agriculture. In this regard, the growth patterns in nineteenth-century Germany are similar to those in today's emerging markets.

Le multiplicateur d'investissement fut conçu dans les années trente pour établir l'existence d'une hausse cumulative des revenus provoquée par les dépenses d'investissement. Cependant cette démarche a mené à une impasse : des caractéristiques contradictoires étaient attribuées aux concepts fondamentaux ; c'est ainsi que l'épargne, pourtant considérée comme un résidu, déterminait en fait la limite de la multiplication. Un réexamen de la nature de l'épargne conduit à préciser la nature du multiplicande et à faire passer le multiplicateur au second plan. On dispose alors d'une interprétation nouvelle des opérations de création et de destruction des revenus, dans le respect de la relation I = S.

Les institutions, conçues comme des entités collectives autonomes contribuant à la régulation du système socio-économique, ont été progressivement endogénéisées d’abord par la théorie économique, puis par la théorie des jeux. Elles ont pour rôle de résoudre des problèmes de coordination entre les agents, en particulier ceux qui découlent de l’absence, de la multiplicité ou de la non optimalité des équilibres spontanés. Pour ce faire, elles peuvent d’abord multiplier le nombre d’équilibres possibles, ensuite sélectionner l’un d’entre eux, en étant autant que possible auto-validées par les agents et non imposées de l’extérieur. Cependant, même si l’institution peut soutenir un équilibre spécifique, il faut rendre compte de sa genèse sinon par le pur raisonnement des agents, du moins par un processus d’apprentissage ou d'évolution.

The article argues that there are two distinct conceptions of money in Keynes’ General Theory, one pertinent to the model of Chs. 1–15 and the other to the model of Ch. 17. Within the context of the first conception no aspect of money other than its role as a link between the present and the future is essential. Whitin the context of the second, the peculiar characteristics of money (low or zero elasticities of production and substitution) assume a decisive role and are crucial in the explanation of the unemployment equilibrium. The article points out that, as a result of this dichotomy, alternative aspects of monetary theory emerge, so that the General Theory cannot be regarded as providing a unified theoritical framework.
