The bremsstrahlung process is studied in complex plasmas including the influence of ions and variable dust charge. The electron-dust particle bremsstrahlung radiation cross-section (e-D-BRCS) is obtained with the analytic expression for the effective dust charge in terms of the Debye length and the temperature ratio. The e-D-BRCS is found to be reduced with either the decrease of ion temperature or increase of electron temperature. The ion density effect is found to be more important in the small electron temperature domain. Interestingly, the influence of ion temperature and density is found to be independent of the bremsstrahlung emission energy. The effective dust charge is also found to decrease with an increase of the ratio of the electron temperature to the ion temperature. In addition, it is found that the effective dust charge increases with an increase of the ratio of the electron density to the ion density. Moreover, the e-D-BRCS is found to be increased with the decrease of ion density.

An equation describing eigenmodes in the ion cyclotron frequency range in ‘warm’ bounded plasmas, i.e. eigenmodes which are absent in the two-fluid model but exist in kinetic theory due to finite Larmor radius of the ions, is derived for the first time. It is valid for electrostatic modes but the developed approach is generic. Calculations are carried out for two cases: first, for a homogeneous magnetic field; second, taking into account the effects of toroidicity in tokamaks. It is found that, in general, equations for eigenmodes in warm plasmas do not reduce to second-order differential equations (in contrast to those which are usually used to describe the radial structure of eigenmodes in fusion devices). The study of modes in warm plasmas is of interest, in particular, in connection with the recent observations of superthermal ion cyclotron emission in the NSTX-U spherical torus and DIII-D tokamak, which can be hardly explained by conventional theories employing fast magnetoacoustic modes.

In tokamaks and neoclassically optimised stellarators, like Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and the Helically Symmetric Experiment, turbulent transport is expected to be the dominant transport mechanism. Among the electrostatic instabilities that drive turbulence, the trapped-electron mode (TEM) has been shown both analytically and in simulations to be absent over large ranges of parameter space in quasi-isodynamic stellarator configurations with the maximum-$J$ property. It has been proposed that the reduction of the linear TEM growth rate in such configurations may lead to the passing-electron-driven universal instability, which is often subdominant to the TEM, becoming the fastest-growing instability over some range of parameter space. Here, we show through gyrokinetic simulations using the Gene code, that the universal instability is dominant in a variety of stellarator geometries over a range of parameter space typically occupied by the TEM, but most consequentially in devices which possess beneficial TEM stability properties like W7-X, which locally satisfies the maximum-$J$ property for deeply trapped particles in the regions of worst curvature. We find that the universal instability exists at long perpendicular wavelengths and, as a result, dominates the potential fluctuation amplitude in nonlinear simulations. In W7-X, universal modes are found to differ in parallel mode structure from trapped-particle modes, which may impact turbulence localisation in experiments.

The construction of kinetic equilibrium states is important for studying stability and wave propagation in collisionless plasmas. Thus, many studies over the past decades have been focused on calculating Vlasov–Maxwell equilibria using analytical and numerical methods. However, the problem of kinetic equilibrium of hybrid models is less studied, and self-consistent treatments often adopt restrictive assumptions ruling out cases with irregular and chaotic behaviour, although such behaviour is observed in spacecraft observations of space plasmas. In this paper, we develop a one-dimensional (1-D), quasineutral, hybrid Vlasov–Maxwell equilibrium model with kinetic ions and massless fluid electrons and derive associated solutions. The model allows for an electrostatic potential that is expressed in terms of the vector potential components through the quasineutrality condition. The equilibrium states are calculated upon solving an inhomogeneous Beltrami equation that determines the magnetic field, where the inhomogeneous term is the current density of the kinetic ions and the homogeneous term represents the electron current density. We show that the corresponding 1-D system is Hamiltonian, with position playing the role of time, and its trajectories have a regular, periodic behaviour for ion distribution functions that are symmetric in the two conserved particle canonical momenta. For asymmetric distribution functions, the system is nonintegrable, resulting in irregular and chaotic behaviour of the fields. The electron current density can modify the magnetic field phase space structure, inducing orbit trapping and the organization of orbits into large islands of stability. Thus, the electron contribution can be responsible for the emergence of localized electric field structures that induce ion trapping. We also provide a paradigm for the analytical construction of hybrid equilibria using a rotating two-dimensional harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian, enabling the calculation of analytic magnetic fields and the construction of the corresponding distribution functions in terms of Hermite polynomials.

In this work, the development of two-dimensional current sheets with respect to tearing modes, in collisionless plasmas with a strong guide field, is analysed. During their nonlinear evolution, these thin current sheets can become unstable to the formation of plasmoids, which allows the magnetic reconnection process to reach high reconnection rates. We carry out a detailed study of the effect of a finite $\beta _e$, which also implies finite electron Larmor radius effects, on the collisionless plasmoid instability. This study is conducted through a comparison of gyrofluid and gyrokinetic simulations. The comparison shows in general a good capability of the gyrofluid models in predicting the plasmoid instability observed with gyrokinetic simulations. We show that the effects of $\beta _e$ promotes the plasmoid growth. The effect of the closure applied during the derivation of the gyrofluid model is also studied through the comparison among the variations of the different contributions to the total energy.

The parallel current driven by applied helicon waves is evaluated in tokamak geometry along with the radio frequency (rf) power absorbed by the passing electrons. The results are compared with the corresponding expressions for lower hybrid current drive. The efficiency of both current drive schemes is found to be the same for any single wave frequency, single mode number limit. The evaluation of the parallel currents is performed using an adjoint technique. Tokamak geometry is retained by using an eigenfunction expansion appropriate for a transit averaged long mean free path treatment of electrons making correlated poloidal passes through the applied rf fields.

The equations of electrostatic drift kinetics are observed to possess a symmetry associated with their intrinsic scale invariance. Under the assumptions of spatial periodicity, stationarity, and locality, this symmetry implies a particular scaling of the turbulent heat flux with the system's parallel size, from which its scaling with the equilibrium temperature gradient can be deduced under some additional assumptions. This macroscopic transport prediction is then confirmed numerically for a reduced model of electron-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence in slab geometry. The system realises this scaling through a turbulent cascade from large to small perpendicular spatial scales. The route of this cascade through wavenumber space (i.e. the relationship between parallel and perpendicular scales in the inertial range) is shown to be determined by a balance between nonlinear-decorrelation and parallel-dissipation timescales. This type of ‘critically balanced’ cascade, which maintains a constant energy flux despite the presence of parallel dissipation throughout the inertial range (as well as order-unity dissipative losses at the outer scale) is expected to be a generic feature of plasma turbulence. The outer scale of the turbulence, on which the turbulent heat flux depends, is determined by the breaking of drift-kinetic scale invariance due to the existence of large-scale parallel inhomogeneity (the parallel system size).

This paper focuses on the wave inverse cascade instability analysis with self-regulating feedback control for a fixed external potential field and a highly localized finite-amplitude initial pulse. The wave inverse cascade instability analysis is carried out by solving the corresponding two-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The wave field firstly suffers from the modulation instability, followed by collapse into turbulence containing the shortest-wavelength modes in the system. This is followed by inverse cascade of the shortest wavelength modes back to the longer-wavelength ones, until a statistical stationary turbulent state is reached. It is found that the inverse cascade is limited to the shorter-wavelength modes with the wavenumber $\left |k\right |\geq 100$. This shows that the viscous damping $p_i$ acts like a control switch to the inverse cascade, and the feedback control can also regulate the intensity of the inverse cascade mode.

Both spin and orbital angular momentum can be exchanged between a rotating wave and a rotating magnetized plasma. Through resonances the spin and orbital angular momentum of the wave can be coupled to both the cyclotron rotation and the drift rotation of the particles. It is, however, shown that the Landau and cyclotron resonance conditions which classically describe resonant energy–momentum exchange between waves and particles are no longer valid in a rotating magnetized plasma column. In this case a new resonance condition which involves a resonant matching between the wave frequency, the cyclotron frequency modified by inertial effects and the harmonics of the guiding centre rotation is identified. A new quasilinear equation describing orbital and spin angular momentum exchanges through these new Brillouin resonances is then derived, and used to expose the wave-driven radial current responsible for angular momentum absorption.

To comprehensively study the physical properties of inductively coupled plasma (ICP), a finite element method (FEM) simulation model of ICP is developed using the well-established COMSOL software. To benchmark the validation of the FEM model, two key physical parameters, the electron density and the electron temperature of the ICP plasma, are precisely measured by the state-of-the-art laser Thomson scattering diagnostic approach. For low-pressure plasma such as ICP, the local pressure in the generator tube is difficult to measure directly. The local gas pressure in the ICP tube has been calibrated by comparing the experimental and simulation results of the maximum electron density. And on this basis, the electron density and electron temperature of ICP under the same gas pressure and absorbed power have been compared by experiments and simulations. The good agreement between the experimental and simulation data of these two key physical parameters fully verifies the validity of the ICP FEM simulation model. The experimental verification of the ICP FEM simulation model lays a foundation for further study of the distribution of various physical quantities and their variation with pressure and absorption power, which is beneficial for improving the level of ICP-related processes.

Terahertz (THz) field excitation by a rotating relativistic electron beam in a magnetized plasma column is described using numerical analysis and particle-in-cell simulation. A rotating electron beam propagating through a cylindrical plasma column excites plasma wakefields. The plasma wakefields couple with the electron beam to excite transverse currents at THz frequency. As a result, the energy of the wakefield directly converts into the form of electromagnetic radiation in the THz range. The magnetic field supports the transverse modes via electron cyclotron resonance. The strength of the THz field is enhanced due to scattering of the spiralling electron beam on the plasma density perturbation. The THz field amplitude is controllable by the electron beam velocity and beam density. On increasing the beam current, the THz field is enhanced significantly. The analytical results are compared with particle-in-cell simulations and are found to be in reasonable agreement.

Charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) measures the radial electric field in the pedestal by measuring the impurity density, temperature and flow. Combined outboard and inboard CXRS measurements allow poloidal variations that arise due to the poloidal variation of the magnetic field to be determined. At present, impurity neoclassical pedestal models avoid the complications of treating finite poloidal gyroradius effects by assuming the impurity charge number is large compared with the main ion charge number. These models are extended slightly by retaining the impurity radial pressure gradient to demonstrate that no substantial effect occurs due to impurity diamagnetic effects. More importantly, the neoclassical model is significantly extended to obtain a more comprehensive treatment of the main ions in the plateau and banana regimes. A parallel impurity momentum equation is derived that is consistent with previous results in the banana regime and reduces to the proper large aspect ratio form required in the plateau regime. The implications for interpreting the CXRS measurements are discussed by writing all results in terms of the gradient drive and poloidal flow.

Turbulence is typically not in equilibrium, i.e. mean quantities such as the mean energy and helicity are typically time-dependent. The effect of non-stationarity on the turbulent hydromagnetic dynamo process is studied here with the use of the two-scale direct-interaction approximation, which allows one to explicitly relate the mean turbulent Reynolds and Maxwell stresses and the mean electromotive force to the spectral characteristics of turbulence, such as the mean energy, as well as kinetic and cross-helicity. It is demonstrated that the non-equilibrium effects can enhance the dynamo process when the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is both helical and cross-helical. This effect is based on the turbulent infinitesimal-impulse cross-response functions, which do not affect turbulent flows in equilibrium. The evolution and sources of the cross-helicity in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence are also discussed.

Simulating plasmas in the Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (Hall-MHD) regime represents a valuable approach for the investigation of complex nonlinear dynamics developing in astrophysical frameworks and fusion machines. The Hall electric field is computationally very challenging as it involves the integration of an additional term, proportional to $\boldsymbol {\nabla } \times ((\boldsymbol {\nabla }\times \boldsymbol {B})\times \boldsymbol {B})$, in Faraday's induction law. The latter feeds back on the magnetic field $B$ at small scales (between the ion and electron inertial scales), requiring very high resolutions in both space and time to properly describe its dynamics. The computational advantage provided by the kinetic lattice Boltzmann (LB) approach is exploited here to develop a new code, the fast lattice-Boltzmann algorithm for MHD experiments (flame). The flame code integrates the plasma dynamics in lattice units coupling two kinetic schemes, one for the fluid protons (including the Lorentz force), the other to solve the induction equation describing the evolution of the magnetic field. Here, the newly developed algorithm is tested against an analytical wave-solution of the dissipative Hall-MHD equations, pointing out its stability and second-order convergence, over a wide range of the control parameters. Spectral properties of the simulated plasma are finally compared with those obtained from numerical solutions from the well-established pseudo-spectral code ghost. Furthermore, the LB simulations we present, varying the Hall parameter, highlight the transition from the MHD to the Hall-MHD regime, in excellent agreement with the magnetic field spectra measured in the solar wind.

It has long been known that the equilibrium of an electron plasma in a stellarator possesses unique properties when compared with other geometries. Previous analyses, both numerical and analytical, as well as experimental results, have indicated that these equilibria are minimum-energy states. Here, it is definitively shown that the equilibrium of an electron plasma on magnetic surfaces with finite rotational transform minimises a constrained physical energy, which has a thermal and an electrostatic contribution. As such, these equilibria are established to be macroscopically stable to all perturbations that do not change the flux-surface average of the density and do not decrease the entropy of the plasma, under the definition of ‘formal stability’ established by Holm et al. (Phys. Rep., vol. 123, no. 1, 1985, 1–116).

This work reports on the development and numerical implementation of the linear electromagnetic gyrokinetic (GK) model in a tokamak flux-tube geometry using a moment approach based on the expansion of the perturbed distribution function on a velocity-space Hermite–Laguerre polynomials basis. A hierarchy of equations of the expansion coefficients, referred to as the gyro-moments (GMs), is derived. We verify the numerical implementation of the GM hierarchy in the collisionless limit by performing a comparison with the continuum GK code GENE, recovering the linear properties of the ion temperature gradient, trapped electron, kinetic ballooning and microtearing modes, as well as the collisionless damping of zonal flows. An analysis of the distribution functions and ballooning eigenmode structures is performed. The present investigation reveals the ability of the GM approach to describe fine velocity-space-scale structures appearing near the trapped and passing boundary and kinetic effects associated with parallel and perpendicular particle drifts. In addition, the effects of collisions are studied using advanced collision operators, including the GK Coulomb collision operator. The main findings are that the number of GMs necessary for convergence decreases with plasma collisionality and is lower for pressure gradient-driven modes, such as in H-mode pedestal regions, compared with instabilities driven by trapped particles and magnetic gradient drifts often found in the core. The accuracy of approximations often used to model collisions (relative to the GK Coulomb operator) is studied in the case of trapped electron modes, showing differences between collision operator models that increase with collisionality and electron temperature gradient, consistent with the results of Pan et al. (Phys. Rev. E, vol. 103, 2021, L051202). Such differences are not observed in other edge microinstabilities, such as microtearing modes. The importance of a proper collision operator model is also confirmed by analysing the collisional damping of geodesic acoustic modes and zonal flows.

We present a theoretical study of two- and three-dimensional massless Dirac one-component plasmas embedded in a constant uniform magnetic field. We determine the wavefunctions and Landau energy levels of a massless Dirac fermion in a constant magnetic field. On this basis we consider magnetism of Fermi fluids of massless charged particles. We show that such a three-dimensional Dirac plasma consisting of fermions with the same helicity has its own magnetic moment. We also consider the limit of strong magnetic fields and investigate the De Haas–van Alphen effect. We derive the Kubo formula for the electrical conductivity tensor of massless Dirac plasmas and consider the Shubnikov–de Haas effect. In addition, we propose a model of the static conductivity tensor and employ the matrix version of the classical method of moments to derive a Drude-like formula for the dynamic conductivity tensor for massless Dirac plasmas. We find that the electrical conductivity tensor for Dirac fermions with the right helicity is not isotropic in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field.

We present a study of subcritical shocks in a highly collisional laboratory plasma with a dynamically significant magnetic field. Shocks were produced by placing cylindrical obstacles into the supermagnetosonic ($M_{{\rm MS}} \sim 1.9$) outflow from an inverse wire array z-pinch at the MAGPIE pulsed power facility ($n_{e} \sim 8.5 \times 10^{17}\,{\rm cm}^{-3}$, $v \sim 45\,{\rm km}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$). We demonstrate the existence of subcritical shocks in this regime and find that secondary stagnation shocks form in the downstream which we infer from interferometry and optical Thomson scattering measurements are hydrodynamic in nature. The subcritical shock width is found to be approximately equal to the resistive diffusion length and we demonstrate the absence of a jump in hydrodynamic parameters. Temperature measurements by collective optical Thomson scattering showed little temperature change across the subcritical shock (${<}10\,\%$ of the ion kinetic energy) which is consistent with a balance between adiabatic and Ohmic heating and radiative cooling. We demonstrate the absence of subcritical shocks when the obstacle diameter is less than the resistive diffusion length due to decoupling of the magnetic field from the plasma. These findings are supported by magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the Gorgon and AstroBEAR codes and discrepancies between the simulations and experiment are discussed.

In typical heliospheric collisionless shocks most of the mass, momentum and energy are carried by ions. Therefore, the shock structure should be most affected by ions. With the increase of the Mach number, ion reflection becomes more and more important, and reflected ions participate in shaping the shock profile. Ion reflection at the collisionless shock is a non-local process: the reflected–transmitted ions re-enter the shock front far from the reflection point. The direction and the magnitude of this shift depend on the shock angle. The distance between the reflection point and the re-entry point is of the order of the upstream ion convective gyroradius and exceeds the shock width. The non-locality of ion reflection may have implications for shock rippling since reflected ions may carry perturbations along the shock front.
