The motion and rotation of an ellipsoidal particle inside square tubes and rectangular tubes with the confinement ratio R/a∈(1.0,4.0) are studied by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), where R and a are the radius of the tube and the semi-major axis length of the ellipsoid, respectively. The Reynolds numbers (Re) up to 50 are considered. For the prolate ellipsoid inside square and rectangular tubes, three typical stable motion modes which depend on R/a are identified, namely, the kayaking mode, the tumbling mode, and the log-rolling mode are identified for the prolate spheroid. The diagonal plane strongly attracts the particle in square tubes with 1.2≤R/a<3.0. To explore the mechanism, some constrained cases are simulated. It is found that the tumbling mode in the diagonal plane is stable because the fluid force acting on the particle tends to diminish the small displacement and will bring it back to the plane. Inside rectangular tubes the particle will migrate to a middle plane between short walls instead of the diagonal plane. Through the comparisons between the initial unstable equilibrium motion state and terminal stable mode, it is seems that the particle tend to adopt the mode with smaller kinetic energy.

In this paper, we propose a new energy-preserving scheme and a new momentum-preserving scheme for the modified regularized long wave equation. The proposed schemes are designed by using the discrete variational derivative method and the finite volume element method. For comparison, we also propose a finite volume element scheme. The conservation properties of the proposed schemes are analyzed and we find that the energy-preserving scheme can precisely conserve the discrete total mass and total energy, the momentum-preserving scheme can precisely conserve the discrete total mass and total momentum, while the finite volume element scheme merely conserve the discrete total mass. We also analyze their linear stability property using the Von Neumann theory and find that the proposed schemes are unconditionally linear stable. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

In this work, the a-posteriori error indicator with an explicit formula for p-version finite element methods in square is investigated, and its reliable and efficient properties are deduced. Especially, this a-posteriori error indicator is determined by the right hand itemof themodel. We reformulate this a-posteriori error indicator with finite coefficients, which can be easily calculated during applications.

The second order weighted and shifted Grünwald difference (WSGD) operators are developed in [Tian, Zhou and Deng, Math. Comput., 84 (2015), pp. 1703–1727] to solve space fractional partial differential equations. Along this direction, we further design a new family of second order WSGD operators; by properly choosing the weighted parameters, they can be effectively used to discretize space (Riemann-Liouville) fractional derivatives. Based on the new second order WSGD operators, we derive a family of difference schemes for the space fractional advection diffusion equation. By von Neumann stability analysis, it is proved that the obtained schemes are unconditionally stable. Finally, extensive numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the performance of the schemes and confirm the convergence orders.

Inspired by the behavior of the blind for hill-climbing using a stick to detect a higher place by drawing a circle, we propose a heuristic direct search method to solve the unconstrained optimization problems. Instead of searching a neighbourhood of the current point as done in the traditional hill-climbing, or along specified search directions in standard direct search methods, the new algorithm searches on a surface with radius determined by the motion of the stick. The significant feature of the proposed algorithm is that it only has one parameter, the search radius, which makes the algorithm convenient in practical implementation. The developed method can shrink the search space to a closed ball, or seek for the final optimal point by adjusting search radius. Furthermore our algorithm possesses multi-resolution feature to distinguish the local and global optimum points with different search radii. Therefore, it can be used by itself or integrated with other optimization methods flexibly as a mathematical optimization technique. A series of numerical tests, including high-dimensional problems, have been well designed to demonstrate its performance.

This paper analyzes semi-discrete and fully discrete hybrid stress quadrilateral finite element methods for 2-dimensional linear elastodynamic problems. The methods use a 4 node hybrid stress quadrilateral element in the space discretization. In the fully discrete scheme, an implicit second-order scheme is adopted in the time discretization. We derive optimal a priori error estimates for the two schemes and an unconditional stability result for the fully discrete scheme. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

In present work, we investigate numerical simulation of steady natural convection flow in the presence of weak magnetic Prandtl number and strong magnetic field by involving algebraic decay in mainstream velocity. Before passing to the numerical simulation, we formulate the set of boundary layer equations with the inclusion of the effects of algebraic decay velocity, aligned magnetic field and buoyant body force in the momentum equation. Later, finite difference method with primitive variable formulation is employed in the physical domain to compute the numerical solutions of the flow field. Graphical results for the velocity, temperature and transverse component of magnetic field as well as surface friction, rate of heat transfer and current density are presented and discussed. It is pertinent to mention that the simulation is performed for different values of algebraic decay parameter α, Prandtl number Pr, magnetic Prandtl number Pm and magnetic force parameter S.

This paper gives analysis of a semi-discrete scheme using equal order interpolation to solve unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. A unified pressure stabilized term is added to our scheme. We proved the uniform error estimates with respect to the Reynolds number, provided the exact solution is smooth.

In this work, we introduce a mathematical model for the theory of generalized thermoelasticity with fractional heat conduction equation. The presented model will be applied to an infinitely long hollow cylinder whose inner surface is traction free and subjected to a thermal and mechanical shocks, while the external surface is traction free and subjected to a constant heat flux. Some theories of thermoelasticity can extracted as limited cases from our model. Laplace transform methods are utilized to solve the problem and the inverse of the Laplace transform is done numerically using the Fourier expansion techniques. The results for the temperature, the thermal stresses and the displacement components are illustrated graphically for various values of fractional order parameter. Moreover, some particular cases of interest have also been discussed.

In this article, we consider the numerical solution for Poisson's equation in axisymmetric geometry. When the boundary condition and source term are axisymmetric, the problem reduces to solving Poisson's equation in cylindrical coordinates in the two-dimensional (r,z) region of the original three-dimensional domain S. Hence, the original boundary value problem is reduced to a two-dimensional one. To make use of the Mechanical quadrature method (MQM), it is necessary to calculate a particular solution, which can be subtracted off, so that MQM can be used to solve the resulting Laplace problem, which possesses high accuracy order and low computing complexities. Moreover, the multivariate asymptotic error expansion of MQM accompanied with for all mesh widths hi is got. Hence, once discrete equations with coarse meshes are solved in parallel, the higher accuracy order of numerical approximations can be at least by the splitting extrapolation algorithm (SEA). Meanwhile, a posteriori asymptotic error estimate is derived, which can be used to construct self-adaptive algorithms. The numerical examples support our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we propose a finite element method for the elasticity problems which have displacement discontinuity along the material interface using uniform grids. We modify the immersed finite element method introduced recently for the computation of interface problems having homogeneous jumps [20, 22]. Since the interface is allowed to cut through the element, we modify the standard Crouzeix-Raviart basis functions so that along the interface, the normal stress is continuous and the jump of the displacement vector is proportional to the normal stress. We construct the broken piecewise linear basis functions which are uniquely determined by these conditions. The unknowns are only associated with the edges of element, except the intersection points. Thus our scheme has fewer degrees of freedom than most of the XFEM type of methods in the existing literature [1,8,13]. Finally, we present numerical results which show optimal orders of convergence rates.

The beginning of the transition from the laminar to a turbulent flow is usually the generation of instability Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) waves in the boundary layer. Previously, most numerical and experimental researches focused on generating instability T-S waves through the external disturbances such as acoustic waves and vortical disturbances interacting with wall roughness or at the leading-edge of flatplate, whereas only a few paid attention to the excitation of the T-S waves directly by free-stream turbulence (FST). In this study, the generating mechanism of the temporal mode T-S waves under free-stream turbulence is investigated by using direct numerical simulation (DNS) and fast Fourier transform. Wave packets superposed by a group of stability, neutral and instability T-S waves are discovered in the boundary layer. In addition, the relation between the amplitude of the imposed free-stream turbulence and the amplitude of the excited T-S wave is also obtained.

Multi-field coupling simulation method based on the physical principles is used to simulate the discharge characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator. Considering the effect of the energy transferring for air, the flow characteristics of nanosecond pulsed plasma synthetic jet actuator are simulated. The elastic heating sources and ion joule heating sources are the two main sources of energy. Through the collisions, the energy of ions is transferred to the neutral gas quickly. The flow characteristics of a series of blast waves and the synthetic jet which erupt from the plasma synthetic jet (PSJ) actuator are simulated. The blast wave not only promotes outward, but also accelerates the gas mixing the inhaled gas from the outside cavity with the residual gas inside the cavity. The performances of PSJ actuator fluctuate in the first three incentive cycles and become stable after that.

Effects of viscous dissipation and radiation on MHD natural convection in oblique porous cavity with constant heat flux is studied numerically in the present article. The right inclined wall is maintained at a constant cold temperature Tc and the left inclined wall has a constant heat flux q with length S, while the remainder of the left wall is adiabatic. The horizontal walls are assumed to be adiabatic. The governing equations are obtained by applying the Darcy model and Boussinesq approximations. COMSOL's finite element method is used to solve the non-dimensional governing equations together with specified boundary conditions. The governing parameters of this study are Rayleigh number (Ra=10,100,200,250,500 and 1000), Hartmann number (0≤ Ha ≤20), inclination angle of the magnetic field (0° ≤ ω ≤ π/2), Radiation (0≤R≤15), the heater flux length (0.1≤H≤1) and inclination angle of the sloping wall (–π/3≤ϕ≤π/3). The results are considered for various values of the governing parameters in terms of streamlines, isotherms and averageNusselt number. It is found that the intensity of the streamlines and the isotherm patterns decrease with an increment in Hartmann number. The overall heat transfer is significantly increased with the increment of the viscous dissipation and the radiation parameters.

Jet impingement induced heat transfer is an important issue in engineering science. This paper presents results of large eddy simulation (LES) of normally impinging elliptic air-jet heat transfer at a Reynolds number of 4400, with orifice-to-plate distance fixed to be 5 in the unit of jet nozzle effective diameter . The elliptic aspect ratio (a/b) is 3/2. While the target wall is heated under some condition of constant heat flux. The LES are carried out using dynamic subgrid model and Open-FOAM. The distributions ofmean velocity components, velocity fluctuations, and subgrid stresses in vertical and radial directions, and the Nusselt numbers involving heat transfer through the target wall are discussed. The comparison with existing experimental and numerical results shows good agreement.

A high-efficient algorithm to solve Crank-Nicolson scheme for variable coefficient parabolic problems is studied in this paper, which consists of the Function Time-Extrapolation Algorithm (FTEA) and Matrix Time-Extrapolation Algorithm (MTEA). First, FTEA takes a linear combination of previous l level solutions as good initial value of Un(see Time-extrapolation algorithm (TEA) for linear parabolic problems, J. Comput. Math., 32(2) (2014), pp. 183–194), so that Conjugate Gradient (CG)-iteration counts decrease to 1/3~1/4 of direct CG. Second, MTEA uses a linear combination of exact matrix values in level L, L+s, L+2s to predict matrix values in the following s–1 levels, and the coefficients of the linear combination is deduced by the quadric interpolation formula, then fully recalculate the matrix values at time level L+3s, and continue like this iteratively. Therefore, the number of computing the full matrix decreases by a factor 1/s. Last, the MTEA is analyzed in detail and the effectiveness of new method is verified by numerical experiments.
