Fluctuation of the received signal strength (RSS) is the key performance-limiting factor for Wi-Fi indoor positioning schemes. In this study, the Manhattan distance was used in the weighted K-nearest neighbour (WKNN) algorithm to improve positioning accuracy. Reference point (RP) intervals were optimised to reduce the complexity of the system. Specifically, two new positioning schemes are proposed in this paper. Scheme 1 uses the cellular network to refine the fingerprint database, while Scheme 2 uses the cellular network positioning to locate the node a priori, then uses the Wi-Fi network to further improve accuracy. The experimental results showed that the average positioning error of Scheme 1 was 1·60 m, a reduction of 12% compared with the existing Wi-Fi fingerprinting schemes. In Scheme 2, when double cellular networks were used, RP usage was reduced by 64% and the calculating time was 0·24 s, a reduction of up to 69·5% compared with the Manhattan-WKNN algorithm. These proposed schemes are suitable for high accuracy and real-time positioning situations, respectively.

Carrier-phase inter-frequency bias (IFB) exists in GLObal NAvigation Satellite System (GLONASS) baselines when receivers of different brands are used. Those biases need to be calibrated in GLONASS data processing to derive precise fixed solutions. Consequently, the accuracy of the IFB calibration affects ambiguity fixing, and low-accuracy IFB values in the calibration will degrade the positioning results. Hitherto, at least two IFB rate value sets for various receiver brands have been given in previous studies. Some of the differences between the value sets exceed 2 mm/FN (frequency number) and the effects of those differences on ambiguity fixing have not been investigated until now. This study showed that ambiguity fixing in GLONASS single-epoch positioning is very sensitive to the accuracy of the IFB rates. Even errors of millimetres can seriously lower the empirical success rate. The short baselines from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS, which includes Russian GLONASS) networks of the International GNSS Service and the Regional Reference Frame Sub-Commission for Europe were employed to obtain more accurate IFB rate estimates with the proposed two-dimensional particle filtering. Afterwards, the IFB estimates were statistically refined by the least-squares method. Experiments showed that when the refined IFB rates were used in the IFB calibration, the empirical success rates of ambiguity fixing in GLONASS single-epoch positioning were largely improved compared with the values given before, improvements such as 20·6% for a Septentrio and Leica receiver combination.

This paper presents a comparative cyber security resilience estimation of shipboard radars that are implemented on two oil/chemical tankers certified as SOLAS ships. The estimated radars were chosen from the same manufacturer, but belonged to different generations. The estimation was conducted by means of ships' crew interviews and computational testing of the radars using a widely deployed vulnerability scanning software tool. The identified cyber threats were analysed qualitatively in order to gain a holistic understanding of cyber risks threatening shipboard radar systems. The results obtained experimentally indicate that potential cyber threats mainly relate to maintenance of the radars' underlying operating system, suggesting the need for regulatory standardisation of periodic cyber security testing of radar systems.

Navigational accidents (collisions and groundings) account for approximately 85% of mari-time accidents, and consequence estimation for such accidents is essential for both emergency resource allocation when such accidents occur and for risk management in the framework of a formal safety assessment. As the traditional Bayesian network requires expert judgement to develop the graphical structure, this paper proposes a mutual information-based Bayesian network method to reduce the requirement for expert judgements. The central premise of the proposed Bayesian network method involves calculating mutual information to obtain the quantitative element among multiple influencing factors. Seven-hundred and ninety-seven historical navigational accident records from 2006 to 2013 were used to validate the methodology. It is anticipated the model will provide a practical and reasonable method for consequence estimation of navigational accidents.

Heading errors caused by gyroscope drift affect the positioning precision of pedestrian dead reckoning, and these errors are even greater for smartphone-based reckoning. In this study, an optimised improved heuristic drift elimination (O-iHDE) method is proposed to correct the heading errors on a smartphone gyroscope. Based on an analysis of the improved heuristic drift elimination (iHDE) and enhanced improved heuristic drift elimination (E-iHDE) algorithms, the quaternion method is used to update the attitude and angle threshold judgement conditions, and a method for correcting the quaternion is added to eliminate the heading errors caused by random gyro errors. The analysis of multiple sets of experiments shows that the new method improves the ability to discern and correct the walking route, and the heading accuracy is improved by more than 90%, which extends the effective operation time of pedestrian dead reckoning positioning based on the step-by-step system.

The aim of this study is to provide a balanced distribution of air traffic controller workload (ATCW) across airspace sectors taking into account the complexity of airspace sectors and the factors affecting ATCW, both objective and perceived. Almost all the studies focusing on the airspace sectorisation problem use heuristic or metaheuristic algorithms in dynamic simulation environments instead of a mathematical modelling approach. The paper proposes a multi-objective mixed integer mathematical model for airspace sectorisation. The model is applied to the upper, en-route level of Turkish airspace. Geographical information systems (GIS) are used to advantage for airspace analysis. The multi-objective model developed in this paper is scalarised by using the conic scalarisation method. For solving the scalarised problem, the CPLEX and DICOPT solvers of GAMS software are implemented. Finally, the optimal sector boundaries of Turkish airspace are defined.

This paper presents a hybrid unscented particle filter (UPF) based on the firefly algorithm for tightly-coupled stereo visual-inertial vehicle positioning systems (VIVPS). Compared with standard UPF, this novel approach can achieve similar estimation accuracy with much less computational complexity. To reduce the computational complexity, the time updating of the hybrid unscented Kalman filter is conducted via the formula of standard linear Kalman filter on the basis of the constructed linear/nonlinear mixed filter model. The particle updating of the particle filter is optimised by modified firefly algorithm to reduce the number of particles needed by means of moving particles towards high likelihood regions via the attraction and movement of fireflies, leading to a significant reduction of computational complexity. Experimental results show the average execution time of the proposed approach is 23·8% that of the standard UPF with similar accuracy, indicating the designed method for tightly-coupled stereo VIVPS can better satisfy the real-time requirement of the system.

Ship density is widely accepted as a basic and major indicator to reflect the marine traffic situation, but it has some limitations in representing the compactness and complexity of ship traffic. To overcoming these limitations, the paper proposes a novel ship density model based on the radial distribution function in molecular dynamics. The proposed model can identify the density and compactness of traffic around each ship and then map the ship density from a microscopic perspective. In addition, the proposed model can identify the global density and the complexity of ship traffic to some extent in the macroscopic perspective. Utilising case studies, the effectiveness of the proposed model is validated through the analysis of ship density in several regions in the Bohai Strait area. The proposed model is developed to help marine surveillance operators gain a better understanding of the traffic situation and to assist them in their work, eventually contributing to navigational safety.

Systematic error is one of the major factors that affect positioning accuracy owing to the changeable and complex nature of seawater environments. Based on a Global Navigation Satellite System-acoustic intelligent buoys system, whose acoustic array consists of a series of surface buoys, a single-difference method for underwater dynamic positioning is proposed to eliminate systematic error. Positioning configuration optimisation was addressed using dilution of precision (DOP). A simulation of DOP proved that for the single-difference method, a radiation network with a centre-difference reference point was superior to a regular polygon network. The positioning experiment showed that the novel method could effectively eliminate systematic error, improving vertical positioning accuracy from a metre- to a decimetre scale.

To reduce the operational complexity of the multipath estimating delay lock loop (MEDLL) and improve its anti-multipath performance for strobe correlators, a combination anti-multipath scheme, namely, the MEDLL on-strobe correlation technique, is proposed for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signal processing. Short-delay multipath rays are separated from the strobe correlation function by the MEDLL mechanism; the dot product between the estimation residue and the standard correlation function or the BOC-PRN correlation function is then computed to eliminate the potential tracking ambiguity. Finally, this non-coherent combination result is sent to the loop filter to obtain anti-multipath code tracking. The proposed method is analysed via simulator data with a software receiver under different front-end bandwidth conditions. The results corroborate the better multipath mitigation capability and lower computational burden, although it is still difficult to eliminate all multipath interference, especially when the front-end bandwidth is insufficient.

The effects of air traffic conflict geometry have been well investigated in prior studies, particularly in the context of the pilot, though little in the context of the air traffic control officer (ATCO). No study to date has investigated the effects of conflict geometry on human factors variables of ATCOs through objective and physiological approaches. This study examines the effects of conflict geometries on ATCO situation awareness, stress level and brain activity during conflict resolution. Fifteen participants were instructed to resolve six different conflict geometries: crossing level, crossing non-level, converging level, converging non-level, overtaking level, and overtaking non-level. The results indicate that converging and crossing conflicts led to lower situation awareness (SA), higher stress level, and higher theta activation at the temporal and parietal lobes. Level conflict led to lower SA. The findings offer two implications, providing insights for the formal guidelines in ATC conflict resolution training and provision of inputs for the conflict resolution aid development.

A simple scheme is presented for mapping the 2D probability density for an observer's position, defined by any number of lines of position (LOPs) on the surface of the Earth, assuming that the LOPs result from uncorrelated observations that have normally distributed errors. Although the mapping can be used to determine the position fix corresponding to the LOPs (which is consistent with other methods), its intended use is computing the total probability that the observer is located within (or outside) some specified area of interest, such as a zone of avoidance around a navigational hazard. Numerical experiments with areas where the average total interior probability is known, such as the triangles and polygons formed by nearly convergent LOPs, show that the method provides correct answers. The numerical experiments also revealed that theoretical probabilities associated with commonly used error ellipses are overstated for navigational solutions based on small numbers of LOPs.

Autonomous ships are gaining in importance and are expected to shape the future of the global shipping industry. This evolutionary shift raises serious issues about compliance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 (COLREGs). This paper reviews the literature on autonomous ships from the perspective of the obligations of good seamanship imposed by COLREGs. The authors conclude that to facilitate the introduction of autonomous ships, the application barriers presented by COLREGs need to be analysed. With this goal, this paper presents a perspective from navigational practice. Four nautical scientists and two deck officers were invited to give their opinions. The analysis indicates that COLREGs require further elaboration and amendments to eliminate uncertainty of interpretation. In particular, the paper highlights the need to amend the ‘look-out’ rule (COLREGs Rule 5) to permit look-out by ‘computer vision’ alone while, at the same time, preserving the distinction between vessels navigating in restricted visibility and in sight of one another.

The paper provides a description of a method of drafting route plan templates on the basis of AIS (automatic identification system) historical data. The first section features a brief background on the problem of drafting route plan templates in the light of international regulations. The main section contains a description of the methods and tools used for processing AIS data into a GRID reference system: ship traffic intensity, average COG (course over ground) and average SOG (speed over ground) as well as route plan templates. The final section includes a presentation of the research method and an analysis of the results, conducted on the basis of maps with charted paths of drafted route plan templates. The summary constitutes a synthesis of general conclusions, the advantages and disadvantages of the solution as well as areas for further research to enhance the solution.

The frequency division multiple access (FDMA) strategy used in GLONASS causes inter-frequency phase bias (IFPB) and inter-frequency code bias (IFCB) between receivers from different manufacturers. The existence of IFPB and IFCB significantly increases the difficulties of fixing GLONASS ambiguity and limits the accuracy and reliability of GLONASS positioning. Moreover, the initial value of IFPB and IFCB may be unavailable or unreliable with the increasing number of receivers from different manufacturers in recent years. In this study, a real-time and reliable calibration algorithm of IFPB and IFCB based on multi-GNSS assistance is proposed by providing a fixed solution. Real-time IFPB rate and IFCB can be obtained using this algorithm without the initial IFPB and IFCB. The IFPB rate for all GLONASS satellites and IFCB for each GLONASS satellite are estimated due to different characteristics of IFPB and IFCB. IFPB calibration can be divided into constant and real-time IFPB calibrations to meet the different positioning requirements. Results show that constant IFPB rate has only 2 mm difference from the mean value of real-time IFPB rate. The IFPB rate and IFCB estimated by this algorithm have excellent stability, and the change in reference satellite cannot affect the results of IFPB rate and the stability of IFCB. The centimetre-level positioning results can be obtained using two calibration methods, and the positioning results with real-time calibration method are 10%–20% better than those with the constant calibration method. Under satellite-deprived environments, the improvements of multi-GNSS positioning accuracy with constant inter-frequency bias calibration gradually increase as the satellite cut-off elevation angle increases compared with GPS/BDS, which can reach up to 0·9 cm in the vertical direction.
