An unbridgeable gulf separates the demands of Christian ethics from the way man is compelled by his natural aspirations to act. That conflict is foreordained by the nature of Christian ethics and the nature of man. Christian ethics demands love, humility, the abnegation of self; man as a natural creature seeks the aggrandizement of self through pride and power. It is the tragedy of man that he is incapable, by dint of his nature, to do what Christian ethics demands of him.

Fadier John Courtney Murray, in die May issue of Worldview, defined the real issue of "Morality and Foreign Policy" as die nature of morality itself. He defined die debate between die "old" and "new" moralities as an intramural one within Protestantism, and Protestant moralists are by definition unable to use the resources of natural law.

If one mentions to German friends that we in America have taken the successfully running film. Rosemary, as a true—and disturbing—picture of their “fabulous fifties,” they only smile and answer that the film tells about Frankfurt and that Frankfurt is not Germany. In fact, they point to this old city, Goethe's birthplace, as a “little America,” not only because of the obvious presence of G.I.'s, but primarily because its population has adopted something similar to the American way of life amidst a new architectural setting they describe as “American style.”

Though we have been on the winning side of the two major wars of this century, American diplomacy has not been equally clear-cut in its results. Dealing as it does with the imponderables of history, it is in the nature of diplomacy to be blurred both in its successes and failures. Yet the frustration that we have known cannot be dismissed merely on the ground that one must allow for a margin of error and hope for the best.

American policy between the wars was a fiasco of monumental proportions. That the failure was one of omission rather than commission in no way exonerates us from a measure of responsibility for the outbreak of the second World War.
