A wild population of a plant species, especially a cross-pollinated species, can display considerable genetic variation. Genetic variability is evident in differential susceptibility to an herbicide because the population can show continuous phenotypic variation. Recent, recurrent selection studies have revealed that phenotypic variation in response to low herbicide rates is heritable and can result in rapid evolution of herbicide resistance in genetically variable cross-pollinated rigid ryegrass. In this study, the heritable genetic variation in an herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass population was exploited to shift the population toward greater herbicide susceptibility by recurrent selection. To enhance herbicide susceptibility, herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass plants were divided into two identical clones, and one series of cloned plants was treated with a low rate of herbicide (diclofop). The nontreated clones of individuals that did not survive the herbicide treatment were selected and bulk-crossed to obtain the susceptible progeny. After two cycles of selection, the overall susceptibility to diclofop was doubled. The results indicate that minor genes for resistance are present in an herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass population, and their exclusion can increase susceptibility to diclofop.

Applications of the substituted phthalimide growth regulators AC-94377 [1-(3-chlorophthalimido)cyclohexanecarboximide] and AC-99524 [1-tetrahydrophthalimido-cyclohexanecarboximide] to the soil surface stimulated germination and emergence of dormant wild mustard seed (Sinapsis arvensis L. ♯4 SINAR) shallowly planted in soil in greenhouse experiments. Surface applications of AC-94377 enhanced the germination and emergence of dormant wild mustard seed planted 0.6 cm deep in soil from nine locations as the rates were raised from 0.4 to 3.7 kg ai/ha. Surface application of AC-94377 increased emergence rates and also extended the period of wild mustard emergence. Increasing quantities of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) straw on the soil surface reduced the effect of surface-applied AC-94377 on shallowly buried dormant wild mustard seed. When dormant wild mustard seed were buried 1.3, 2.5, or 3.8 cm deep, surface applications of AC-94377 also stimulated greater emergence than the dormant controls from these depths, strongly suggesting that the compound moved from the surface to the depth of planting.

The effect of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron) and isopropyl m-chlorocarbanilate (chlorpropham) on in vivo levels of ATP in Chlorella sorokiniana Shihira and Krauss were compared. Diuron inhibited the photochemical, but not the oxidative, production of ATP, whereas chlorpropham inhibited both systems. Diuron equally inhibited growth and ATP synthesis, but chlorpropham had a stronger effect on ATP level than on growth.

Vapor losses of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (dichlobenil) were studied under controlled laboratory conditions by trapping vapors directly in a magnesia silica absorbant. Vapor losses increased with increasing temperature. Herbicide loss from a spray formulation in 3 hr amounted to 10% at 30 C and 18% at 40 C. Volatility increased as the soil moisture level increased from air dryness to field capacity. However, as the moisture level was increased to saturation, vapor losses remained similar to losses at field capacity. Volatility from a granular formulation was reduced when compared to the spray application. Volatility decreased as the cation exchange capacity of the soils increased.

The influence of acetamide herbicide applications on efficacy of CGA-43089 [α-(cyanomethoximino)-benzacetonitrile] in grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] was studied under field conditions. Acetamide herbicides applied preplant and incorporated on a Haynie very fine sandy loam caused more grain sorghum injury in 1979 than in 1978. Reductions in plant population, plant height and yield, along with delay in maturity, were severe for acetochlor [2-chloro-N-(ethoxymethyl)-6′-ethyl-O-acetotoluidide], metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide], and alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide]; moderate for diethatyl [N-(chloroacetyl)-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)glycine], xylachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)-N-(1-methylethyl)acetamide], and butam [2,2-dimethyl-N-(1-methylethyl)-N-(phenylmethyl)propanamide]; and did not occur for propachlor (2-chloro-N-isopropylacetanilide) treatments. Acetamide herbicides caused less grain sorghum injury on a Reading silt loam than on a Haynie very fine sandy loam in 1979. CGA-43089 applied as a seed treatment protected grain sorghum grown on soils treated with metolachlor, alachlor, diethatyl, or xylachlor. Metolachlor-triazine combinations at five locations in Kansas reduced yields at two locations. CGA-43089 provided protection from metolachlor injury at those two locations.

The primary goal of this research was to determine whether crop damage from herbicides measured soon after treatment could estimate relative crop yield loss. Two to 4 wk after spraying soybeans with an unregisrered mixture of rhifensulfuron plus sethoxydim at various rates plus crop oil concentrate, percent stunting was visually rated and percent projected ground cover of soybeans was determined from photographs. In each of 3 yr, relative percent soybean yield was a negative linear function of relative herbicide rate from 0.25× to 2× the registered (1×) rate. The 1× rate of thifensulfuron and sethoxydim was 17.5 and 420 g ai ha−1, respectively. Relative soybean yield was also negatively related linearly to stunting but positively related linearly to soybean ground cover over 3 yr. Linear regression equation models of relative soybean yield versus percent soybean ground cover explained more model variability, more consistently (R 2 ≥ 0.60 in two of 3 yr) than did either stunting (R 2 ≥ 0.60 in one of 3 yr) or relative herbicide rate (R 2 = 0.37 to 0.48 over 3 yr). However, linear regression models for each independent variable differed from year to year and were related to differences in rainfall following treatment. Ways are suggested to increase regression model precision and between-year reproducibility.

Soil residues from annual trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N dipropyl-p-toluidine) applications were determined over a 4-year period on a Sharpsburg silty clay loam at Lincoln, Nebraska. A phytotoxic residue of trifluralin persisted in the soil for 1 or more years especially at above-normal rates of trifluralin. Repeated applications of trifluralin did not cause a significant buildup of trifluralin in the soil. There was little herbicide remaining in the soil during subsequent years from normal rates of trifluralin.

Ridge-till is an integrated weed management system that involves the physical movement of soil containing weed seeds away from the row with ridge-clearing equipment on the planter. Corn, grain sorghum, and soybean are the major crops planted using the ridge-till system. Weeds can be controlled with cultivation, competitive row crops, and herbicides. Weeds have adapted to the system but have been controlled through alternative management. Through modernization of equipment and herbicides, ridge-till has become an economic crop production practice. Integrating cultivation and herbicides controls a broader spectrum of weeds than cultivation or herbicides alone.

Postdispersal weed seed predation is a significant source of weed mortality in agroecosystems. The magnitude of seed predation, however, is variable. Understanding the relative importance of factors driving variability in seed predation rates will increase the potential utility of seed predation to farmers. We conducted landscape-scale field experiments to quantify and compare the effects of space, time of sampling, and habitat on weed seed predation. Seed predation assays, with and without vertebrate exclosures, measured seed predation rates at spatially explicit sample sites across 8.5 ha of crop and noncrop habitats on a diversified organic vegetable farm in Maine. Total and invertebrate seed predation averaged 8% and 3% d−1, respectively. Vertebrate seed predators detected by motion-sensing cameras included small mammals and birds. A ground beetle, Harpalus rufipes, was highly dominant in pitfall traps, comprising 66% of invertebrate seed predators captured within crop fields. Seed predation was randomly distributed in space. However, time of sampling and habitat were highly significant predictors of seed predation. Variance partitioning indicated that habitat factors explained more variation than did time of sampling. Total seed predation was greater in crop and riparian forest habitats than in mowed grass, meadow, or softwood forest. Generally, invertebrate seed predation was greatest at sites with an intermediate degree of vegetative cover, whereas habitat type was the chief biotic determinant of vertebrate seed predation rates. These results suggest cover cropping and wetland conservation as practices that may bolster seed predation rates.

Weed scientists face complex and difficult challenges. Within our discipline, we must increase the sustainability of current weed management approaches and help respond to invasive plants as a component of global change. There also are major challenges that we share with other agricultural disciplines, such as mounting comprehensive efforts to address the problems of current agriculture. We believe that any effective response to these challenges will require public work, i.e., projects in which a diverse group of people work together—across lines of difference (professional, cultural, etc.)—to produce broad-based, systemic innovations that meet complex challenges. We propose that weed scientists should join relevant public-work projects by practicing “public scholarship.” We define public scholarship as original, creative, peer-evaluated intellectual work that is fully integrated in a public-work project. By full integration we mean that the scholar's work serves to fuel the social (i.e., collective) learning of the public-work group. This condition requires that the scholar be a full participant in the group rather than just being in a consultative or advisory role. We present several case studies of weed scientists practicing public scholarship. These scientists found this mode of scholarship to be a highly effective means by which to address their professional priorities. Barriers to the practice of public scholarship include the lack of relevant guidelines and norms within academic culture, e.g., with regard to quality-assurance standards. But public scholarship offers weed scientists a new way of responding to increasingly urgent demands to show that our work effectively produces public value in return for public investment. We believe that graduate programs in weed science should begin to offer students opportunities to learn skills that are relevant to public scholarship.

Horseweed has become increasingly common and difficult to control in San Joaquin Valley vineyards, due in part, to the evolution of glyphosate resistance. The development of weed-suppressive vineyard designs in which the trellis design, spacing, and row orientation combine to cast dense shade on the weed canopy zone (WCZ) may reduce weed growth. The relevance of such a system to horseweed, which can grow to be as tall, or taller, than a typical grapevine trellis, is uncertain. Also unknown is whether a glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotype and glyphosate-susceptible (GS) biotype would perform similarly under such conditions. Therefore, we compared the growth and development of two potted horseweed biotypes (GR and GS) in vinerows oriented east–west (EW) and north–south (NS). Rows oriented EW allowed less light penetration to the WCZ than NS rows throughout the study, and horseweed biotypes responded to low light levels by producing leaves with larger specific leaf area and leaf area ratios than those in the NS rows. Also, the leaf, stem, and root dry weight of the horseweed plants in the EW rows was reduced by 30% compared to the horseweed plants in NS rows. Leaf number was also reduced in the horseweed plants in the EW rows, but only for the GS biotype. Row orientation did not affect phenological development or the number of seeds produced by the GR or GS biotypes, but the GR biotype budded, flowered, and set seed approximately 1 wk earlier than the GS biotype. Thus, shade associated with the EW vinerows reduced horseweed growth, but not fecundity, and the GR biotype reached reproductive maturity earlier than the GS biotype.

Junglerice is one of the world's most problematic C4 grass weeds present in dry-seeded rice in many countries. A screenhouse study was conducted to determine the effect of four rice planting densities (0, 100, 200, and 400 plants m−2) and four nitrogen (N) rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha−1) on the growth and morphological plasticity of junglerice. Junglerice plant height was reduced by 15 to 35%, tiller number by 54 to 77%, leaf number by 61 to 85%, leaf area by 69 to 90%, leaf biomass by 63 to 88%, stem biomass by 70 to 92%, and inflorescence biomass by 66 to 94% at rice planting densities ranging from 100 to 400 plants m−2 relative to the junglerice plants grown alone. However, all these growth parameters increased with increasing N rates. Junglerice biomass increased by 125 to 472%, whereas rice biomass increased by 122 to 285% with the application of 50 to 150 kg N ha−1. Additional N favored junglerice biomass production relative to rice. Rice crop interference (200 to 400 plants m−2) reduced junglerice growth and biomass and overshaded the junglerice plants when no N was applied. Increasing N application resulted in taller plants and higher biomass of junglerice, while it reduced root-shoot weight ratio. These results suggest that increasing N rate increased the competitive ability of the junglerice over rice regardless of crop planting density. Information generated in this study could be useful in devising appropriate combinations of planting density and fertilizer management strategies for cultural junglerice management, particularly in situations where junglerice species are more responsive than rice to N.

As new targets for herbicide action are identified from genomics research, large and diverse chemical collections and high-throughput assays will be required to maximize the probability of identifying compounds with activity at these targets. The new technology of combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput, miniaturized, in vitro screening, which has become an integral part of pharmaceutical discovery, is now being applied to discover new herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Depending on the synthesis design, the products of a combinatorial synthesis, referred to as a library, may be either unbiased or biased toward an intended target. Unbiased libraries are generally prepared to maximize chemical diversity around a central core structure or scaffold. Often containing 10,000 to 30,000 compounds each, these libraries are encoded and prepared by a combinatorial methodology known as mix-and-split, which produces compounds as mixtures. The preparation of these large libraries requires robust synthetic methodology that will accommodate reactants (building blocks) with diverse structures. Biased libraries tend to be smaller in size, ranging from 100 to 2,500 compounds. They are prepared using synthetic methodology that produces collections of discrete compounds (parallel synthesis) or pools of five to 10 compounds per pool (mix-and-split synthesis). Compounds in biased libraries are rationally designed to contain structural motifs or pharmacophores that are presumed to be beneficial for activity on the intended target. Screening is conducted in microtiter assay plates containing from 96 to 864 wells per plate. For in vitro assays, high-density formats (864 wells per plate) are preferred. The higher density format allows for testing higher concentrations and fewer compounds per well, which leads to a more rapid identification of the active molecules. For in vivo assays, 96-well formats are preferred. Regardless of the microtiter plate format, multiple beads are distributed into plates by robotic pipetting, and single beads are distributed via robot-controlled suction pipets. Test compounds are cleaved from the beads and transferred in solvent to assay plates. Required reagents are added to the plate to initiate the assay. A wide range of in vitro and in vivo herbicide, insecticide, and fungicide assays can be conducted in microtiter plates.

Horehound seed from Wyperfeld (Wyp90 and Wyp93) had optimum germination (98%) at constant 25 C and alternating 30/15 C at 0 MPa, while seed from Swift's Creek (SC93) had optimum germination at constant 25 to 27 C (84%) or alternating 25/15 C (95%). The Generalized Additive Models showed the effects of the three covariates (temperature, temperature difference and water potential) followed a smooth and regular pattern. Germination of SC93, Wyp90 and Wyp93 seed increased (P < 0.001) by 9.1, 6.1, and 11.6% for each degree increase in temperature difference but decreased (P < 0.001) with decreases in water potential by a factor of 4.1, 4.8, and 7.1 respectively, and ceased at −1.5 MPa. At constant temperatures the odds of germination were 27, 19, and 18% smaller for water potentials of 0, −0.25 and −0.5 MPa than when alternating temperatures varied by 15 C.

Giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm.) was grown from seed in controlled climate rooms at temperatures of 50, 60, 70, and 80 F and photoperiods of 8, 12, 16, and 20 hours. An inherently poor primary root system resulted in slow and uniform growth during the first few weeks under all environmental conditions. Giant foxtail produced the most dry matter at the highest temperatures and longest photoperiods. No photoperiod inhibited flowering but photoperiod produced differences in development of inflorescences. Within any temperature, the longer the photoperiod the greater the size of panicle and number of seeds produced. Seed viability was high at 80 and 70 F, low at 60 F and zero at 50 F within all photoperiods.

Spring and fall applications of 10 soil sterilant herbicides were investigated for control of brush and herbaceous vegetation at five locations in Texas. A majority of the herbicides controlled most brush species. However, 5-bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil (bromacil), 2-methoxy-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-5-triazine (prometone), and 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) were most effective at all locations. A mixture of disodium tetraborates, 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (monuron) and trichlorobenzoic acid was very effective for at least 20 months at four of the five locations. Most herbicides controlled herbaceous vegetation for 1 year or less. Bromacil controlled herbaceous vegetation for approximately 2 years at most locations.

Early spring or late fall treatments of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (dichlobenil) were effective for the control of several annual and perennial sedges, grasses, and broadleaf weeds in cranberry bogs. Isopropyl N-(3-chlorophenyl) carbamate (CIPC) 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D and 2-chloro-4,6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) as spring applications were less effective than dichlobenil for the wide spectrum of weeds encountered. Single spring applications of as much as 4 lb/A of dichlobenil, 6 lb/A of 2,4-D, 24 lb/A of CIPC, and 2 lb/A of simazine were tolerated by the cranberry vines. Dichlobenil at 4 and 6 lb/A caused reductions in upright growth and fruit size. Keeping quality of mature fruit was not adversely affected by herbicidal rates of any of the materials.

In a 3-year field study in corn (Zea mays L.), several herbicides and combinations were studied for the control of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.), giant green foxtail [Setaria viridis var. major (Gaud.) Posp.], and fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.). Best yellow nutsedge control (87 to 88%) resulted from applications of 4.48 kg/ha of either alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] preplant incorporated or atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] preplant incorporated plus atrazine postemergence with a phytobland oil. Between 72 to 83% control of yellow nutsedge resulted from applications of 2.24 kg/ha of alachlor, 4.48 kg/ha of butylate (S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate), and combinations of atrazine plus butylate. Greater than 90% control of giant green foxtail and fall panicum resulted from butylate plus atrazine or alachlor; postemergence applications of atrazine resulted in significantly less control of fall panicum or giant green foxtail.

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of low soil moisture on yellow nutsedge emergence in relation to thermal and chronological time and test the ability of thermal models generated previously to predict emergence under water stress. Unsprouted tubers from California and Arizona were planted in pots, buried at field sites in California and Arizona, and subjected to wet or dry treatments. Pots were monitored weekly to determine date of emergence and number of emerged shoots. The California genotype emerged 47 to 61 days after planting (DAP) in the dry treatment and 33 to 49 DAP in the wet treatment, depending on planting site. The range for the Arizona genotype was 51 to 76 DAP in the dry treatment and 43 to 61 DAP in the wet treatment. Days and degree-day intervals to first emergence differed between irrigation treatments and planting sites but interactions were not significant. All models were accurate in predicting emergence dates for genotypes in the wet treatment at the California site, while emergence in Arizona was underestimated by 9 d. Tubers subjected to the dry treatment needed a higher number of accumulated degree-day units before emergence occurred and had fewer emerged shoots as compared to the wet treatment. Degree-day models generated for yellow nutsedge under optimal conditions lack sufficient robustness to be predictive under water stress conditions.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of rainfall timing and antecedent moisture on atrazine leaching through intact soil cores taken from no-till and conventional-till corn fields. Simulated rainfall was applied to no-till and conventional-till cores 1 to 14 d after atrazine application and, in a second study, one d after atrazine was applied to no-till and conventional-till cores at 1 to 800 kPa soil moisture. Increasing the lag time between atrazine application and rainfall from one to 14 d reduced the amount of atrazine leached by about 50% for both no-till and conventional-till soil cores. During the same time period, the amount of atrazine adsorbed to soil increased by about 30% for both tillages. Soil dryness (antecedent moisture) at the time of atrazine application had no effect on the amount of atrazine leached through conventional-till cores. However, leaching decreased in no-till cores as antecedent moisture decreased from 1 to 33 kPa; drying to 800 kPa had no further effect. The leaching rate of atrazine was much higher for the initial 0.5 pore volume than for the next 1.5 pore volume at all rainfall timing and antecedent moisture levels. This behavior is indicative of preferential transport.
